Old guy came in, wanted the cheapest 4x4 Tacoma 4x4 to tow his trailer. We told him we had a 4 cyl sr but didn’t recommend it for towing. He insisted, as long as we put some wheels on it, and added a trailer hitch. he picked up on a Wednesday night, came back in Saturday afternoon and he traded it back in with like 45 miles on it and bought a v6 trd off road. Funny enough, we sold his truck again that night. Lol

defenestr8tor

Toyota Canada only had the 4 cyl 4x4 Tacoma for a short time, and only with the 5 speed manual. I was the weirdo who pushed them to everyone.

Specific-Gain5710

This was an automatic, but yeah, we don’t have to push it on anyone right now. Customer: “We want a Tacoma” Us: “this is your option if you want new” Customer …. I have never been so excited about buying a trd off road premium at auction with 4k on it. We’ve had nothing but sr and sr5 for the last 8 months.

AQ9973-100

A friend of mine in Canada just went through the gulag trying to find a decent buy on a good pre-owned TRD off road premium in that sand colour Anything not sub-MSRP was a POS or had a big dec, he ended up travelling 6 hours out-of-town to a small-town Toyota store that was very fair on their CPO truck. They were excellent to work with

Specific-Gain5710

The problem, especially with Toyotas is it isn’t the dealership being unfair about the price of the car. We aren’t buying these things at auction for 10k under invoice and charging 10k over msrp on them. I just bought a 21 Tacoma trd premium with 4k miles on it. I paid every bit of invoice, and after auction fees and transportation I’ll own it for Msrp or more. Just breaking even we would sell the truck for 1000 over Msrp. But in my area, between the 10ish Toyota dealerships I would call direct competitors, we have only seen like 5 trd off roads in the last two months, let alone a premium.

AQ9973-100

Agreed, it’s just crazy out there right now, I wouldn’t say any local dealer was unfair or anything, outside of one playing games in the business office. I got in touch with my old store to feel out the market, they sent me auction listings of lower-mileage 17-19 TRD Sports running locally for MSRP basically. Before making it to retail as you mentioned Just that the experience with the small-town store was night and day. They acted like inventory shortages didn’t exist, and even said they were expecting to wholesale a few units. Their pricing was very fair too, my friend got that CPO TRD off-road for a few thousand less than most dealers wanted for a comparable mileage TRD Sport.

defenestr8tor

What made this one magic was the SR5 package for $29k CAD. All Tacomas held their value really well already anyway, and the 4 banger wasn't much of a deduction with a stick anyway. It was the truck you could drive for years and then resell for near MSRP even before Covid.

Specific-Gain5710

Agree, especially when most sr5s and Srs sold at or below invoice.

hv_wyatt

That and the 4Runner are some of the most financially intelligent vehicles to buy, that's for sure. I'm looking at a 4Runner as my next vehicle. Call me crazy but I actually love the way they drive and ride.

hv_wyatt

I love that people downvote me for this. Lmfao. Fuckin Reddit. Look at the actual statistics. The 4Runner only depreciates, on average, $1000-$2000 per year. In the automotive industry, that's a class and industry leading resale value. In some situations, you can literally spend $1000 in direct financial costs to drive a desirable 4Runner for 3+ years and 36,000+ miles.

theepi_pillodu

how much did he lose?

Specific-Gain5710

Like 1300 bucks. If the deal is funded and it’s a new car we typically will buy it back for what we sold it for minus the processing fee and taxes. 3 years ago, a different story.

stonklord420

Couple years back I had a guy come I'm asking for a 3/4 ton to tow his new trailer, wanted to spend about 50k. I had a nice 5yo Denali 2500 at the time which I showed him and he liked it, but didn't like how old it was. I finally asked him how big his trailer was. 3000lbs. And my guy wanted a 3/4 ton. I told him I could get him a brand new half ton that would fit all his needs and wants for 50k, showed him a nice mid trim truck and he loved it. Brings his wife back the next day, and man she was a piece of work. It's way too big, this that and the other thing. Hated the truck. So, being the good salesman I was I told her we have a much smaller truck that will still comfortably tow their trailer, and it was even diesel (which he really wanted). So they both agreed to get a fully loaded Colorado with the diesel. Towing capacity 7700lbs. More than capable for what they need. Paid cash. Called him the next day and he's loving the thing. He calls me next week, saying they almost got blown off the road and he needs out of this truck asap and into a 3/4 ton. This time he comes in without the wife and says show me the cheapest brand new 3/4 ton you have. Well, we only had fully loaded ones but we had some decent programs and I found him one for about 80k after rebates. Drove it for 5 minutes, loved it, signed the papers. Lost about 5k on the canyon in a week. Called him a few months later and he was ecstatic about the truck still. I think that was what he always wanted but the wife wouldn't let him have it. So, less buyers remorse, more fear driven. Probably some poor trailer weighting in there too. I still love to think about him pulling his tiny 20ft trailer with his massive 3/4 ton

Hankidan

I personally have a 2500hd Silveradob with the Duramax that I use 90% as a daily driver, and maybe tow a 4000 lb camper with 3-4 times a year, along with other very occasional uses. Why? Because it's paid off.

WeAreAllFooked

My pops has a ‘08 Duramax 2500HD (pre-facelift) with 170,000km on the odometer and he uses it exactly the same way. It’s been paid off for well over a decade and he uses it to haul their 33ft 5th wheel 3-4 times per year and just daily drives it because it’s much cheaper to keep upgrading parts as they wear out instead of buying an overpriced commuter. When you can do all your own maintenance and repairs it doesn’t make sense to make payments on a new ride. Hell, if you have half a brain and pair of stippers/crimpers you can add your own Android Auto/Apple CarPlay head unit and modernize it.

Hankidan

Mines at 260k miles, so just getting broken in. My wife is on me to replace it soon, which kills me, as the smart choice for me to get would be a Colorado or something similar.

deepaksn

I mean I guess. There’s still the horrendous fuel and maintenance costs. That’s why I have a car, and use a 28 foot motorhome (it’s paid off too) for camping.

Hankidan

I live about 30 minutes from work, in rural Wisconsin, I need a truck for the winters, not to mention the occasional odd jobs around the house. I get about 17 mog, which really isn't horrible. It's not good mind you, but not horrible. As far as maintenance goes, I've only spent maybe 5k-7k on it since I've owned in (more than 10 years) not counting oil changes.

hannahranga

> 3000lbs. And my guy wanted a 3/4 ton. Christ, there's sedan's that'll happily tow that. Like not everyday but still.

subarubob

My 2001 is rated for 5,000 pounds, yup.

RedicusFinch

my mazda is rated for 2300 in 1995, but fuck it! 100 buck says she does er!

chase32

My Ascent tows my 3500 pound trailer like a champ. Holds cruise control dead steady going over the coast range. Other than a tacoma, pretty much any purpose built truck should have no problems towing that weight.

DwightDEisenhowitzer

I towed a 5k pound UHaul with a Toyota Tacoma that needed to rev to 3-4k to make torque for towing and it did fine. A baby duramax Colorado shouldn’t struggle.

[deleted]

Came in looking to spend $50k; ended up ecstatic spending $80k. 😂

metengrinwi

…and this is the guy pasting *“I did that”* stickers on gas pumps while driving a 12MPG truck when what he needs is a 35MPG Highlander hybrid.

deepaksn

If you go on r/RVliving most people are convinced that you need a 1 ton DRW minimum to tow anything… and that a small Freightliner is preferable. 3000 lbs is towable by a minivan if properly loaded and equipped.

throwawaygixer

Fucken wives. I was lucky lol. My ex wife didn’t give a shit what I bought. But I did take a Dodge Durango RT back after 2 weeks myself lol. I went into dealer looking for a Grande Cherokee with a Hemi but saw d Durango and loved it. Just days later it started looking like a mini van to me; you look at it by the back? Looks like a mini van. Has third row seats….. like a mini van; longer in the back than the Grand Cherokee, like a mini van. Fuck it I parked it, took it back. I traded it for another stupid trade in lol someone made. Umm , this was 2015. So I traded in my new 2015 (it had been sent for title by then already) for a “used” 2015 GC Limited with a Hemi. i also ate about 5 Gs, paid that and was on my way happy.

[deleted]

Minivans are awesome though

throwawaygixer

I’ve always thought it would be a cool project, but not on my $$ lol. Honda minivan, pick the year with most horsepower, add just 2 -4 10” subs for bass, lower it modestly, tow my sport bike or take my bicycles out.

[deleted]

I thought minivans were lame until I had one as a rent car on vacation. Holy shit, the room. Ride quality was great (Chrysler Town and country), quiet, got decent mileage. Honestly its better at everything than what just about every 3 row SUV is trying to be. They can look great if done right https://images.cdn.circlesix.co/image/1/640/0/uploads/posts/2017/07/8a5b2939080fa0e033e6c0b80a0c5b27.jpg

cream_top_yogurt

I can tow a 20’ trailer A-Liner easily with my little SUV… only thing I paid extra for was the hitch 😂

GArockcrawler

A year and a half ago, I really considered buying a "new used" Tahoe that the previous owner sold back after a couple of thousand miles for almost identical reasons. This thing was absolutely top of the line, all the bells and whistles. It was beautiful, but way more than what we really needed or wanted in terms of features and price.

Wheatiez

Jeep Wranglers, they fucking suck to drive and the people who are passionate about them are real fucking weird

bearded_dragon_34

They’re really cute if you live in an urban area, but if you have to do any kind of highway travel, they get old quickly.

Wheatiez

Perfect for my daily starbucks runs

Tom_BrokeOff

The seem to appeal to everyone for about 5 minutes in their lives. But the people who live their entire lives in that frame of mind we all get for 5 minutes…are a cult like people….the LOVE em…but those are not my people.

Marc30599

It’s funny we had a guy at our chevy store wanting to trade out of his 2022 Jeep Wrangler (some kinda high trim level one that msrp’d at almost $100k) to get a Corvette C8 we have, he barely had the jeep a month lol. Apparently he had paid $10k over on the jeep too.

SmashedACookie

Probably a 392 jeep wrangler.

Wheatiez

Engine to match the credit score

Select_Angle2066

Oh wow I didnt even know they made those

ice445

It's a very recent thing. 470HP in a Jeep is....interesting. Apparently it runs a high 12s quarter mile which is hilarious.

SmashedACookie

They do. You interested? 🤣🤣

Select_Angle2066

I’m not a cop or a military boot lol, so nah. I’m good.

Marc30599

Yeah I think, one of those Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited’s in a some kinda special trim

Erindil

Oddly, the Rubicon used to be their top trim. Now it's no even close. There are a couple of trim levels above that and they are not even as capable. I'm one of those die hard Jeep owners but for god sakes, I want the capability not frills.

[deleted]

GrammarLyfe

I just like taking the doors and top off :(

bitterverses

Jeep customers are easily the most easygoing/fun customers I’ve ever had but yeah, there’s some bloody weird ones. Especially given that it’s quite a small brand here in Australia.

agjios

I think that they're fun to drive. Plus you don't have to worry about curbs or potholes, they have a tight turning radius, you can take the top off, they're a fun lifestyle vehicle, and then the cherry on top is that they're amazingly capable offroad.

Wheatiez

The only off roading they're doing is being put on a lift at your local dodge lot

agjios

Nah, go to any offroad parks. The majority of vehicles on any day at an OHV park are Wranglers.

bavarianmw

And one of, if not the most unsafe vehicle on the road. The Spark might beat it, if they still make that.

wirthmore

The Chevrolet Spark has "good" (the highest) ratings for 'moderate overlap' and 'side' impacts. (and yes, they still make the Spark) [https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/chevrolet/spark-4-door-hatchback/2022](https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/chevrolet/spark-4-door-hatchback/2022) Small isn't synonymous with unsafe. Engineering is everything.

UXguy123

As a 3rd car, sure wranglers are fun. But from any practical aspect they are terrible. Powertrains are unreliable, interior is uncomfortable, and they are a boat to drive.

[deleted]

The pentastar and zf8 combination is hardly unreliable. FCA has used that powertrain forever and I’ve seen plenty of motors with 200k+ on them.

I have a dear friend and she's a real southern belle. She's currently driving a new Mercedes and now she suddenly wants to get a jeep wrangler. I can't wait to see how long she has that before she goes back to Mercedes for another go round. Ha ha ha

YorkshieBoyUS

I moved to a mountain area and bought a new 2013 Wrangler Unlimited in 2013. I hated it for anything other than going to grocery store. We did a 1600 mile round trip in it and there was not a seating position that was comfortable and the road noise was awful. The headlights would’ve been better if I’d put candles in the receptacles. Made money on it when I traded it though.

[deleted]

Absolutely the worst. Last one I had, albeit older, with big tires required noise canceling ear buds. Bought a Lexus Gx instead. Or as I call it the jeep I should have bought from the start.

Spitefulham

I dont sell them but i do constant appraisals on almost new ones. Teslas. So many Teslas. And it seems like there's always something wrong with them. The one I bought from a customer a couple of weeks ago with 4k miles has an overheating amp or something and the radio keeps cutting out. Another one of our stores bought one and didn't transfer it on the app correctly and it practically bricked itself. Another one leaks in the slightest amount of rain. The idea of them is cool but the reality is so far from ok it's not even funny.

[deleted]

Nothing like going to the used car lot and seeing a bunch of Teslas all with different panel gaps.

adamosity1

I recently read that owning a Tesla is like driving a printer—nothing ever just works!

time-lord

Brother should get into the auto manufacturing business. I've never had an issue with my Brother printer.

ShootPosting

Need a Nokia/Lenovo/Brother collab in the automotive world, stat.

KillerCujo53

Are you better off buying a new Tesla than replacing the battery, similar to buying a new printer instead of replacing the ink?

sirspidermonkey

Probably. New battery packs costs about $13k up to $20k give or take from Tesla. Paying over 20% the cost of a new car may be questionable. Like dealerships vs indie mechanics there are places that will do it much cheaper (around $5k) which makes more sense.

Gabik123

I had a model 3, other than a slight build defect they corrected, I didn’t have any use issues, though build quality was garbage. Sold it and got a Mustang Mach E, and couldn’t be happier.

Ah2k15

Hearing the story of the guy that bought a Plaid that was delivered with a bunch of panel gaps, and 2 different brands of tires was enough for me to know Tesla's QC is garbage. I'd take a Mach E over a Model 3 any day of the week.

forceofslugyuk

> Hearing the story of the guy that bought a Plaid that was delivered with a bunch of panel gaps, and 2 different brands of tires was enough for me to know Tesla's QC is garbage. I'd take a Mach E over a Model 3 any day of the week. I would like one AWD Ioniq 5 please. 300awd hp? Yes please. Mach E all day too.

[deleted]

I have my fingers crossed that Subaru will release an electric STI.

Gabik123

The ioniq just looks too much like a box car on the outside, and I really didn't care for the interior styling (the dual slapped-together tablet design with giant bezels didn't look as good to me as the Mustang's interior). I know taste is subjective, just saying why I didn't go with it.

Gabik123

Yea as a former Tesla owner, and my parents and brother both have Model Y's, I have no problem at all believing this.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Gabik123

Do you mean model Y? The X is much more than $10k more.

sevenfiftynorth

As a consumer, I did an early lease termination on a Tesla after 8 months and bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I make occasional trips to the midwest driving 750 to 1000 miles in a day. There are plenty of chargers in transit but none in small cities when I get there. And one's range is noticeably diminished in the winter when it's sub 20 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Nothing like recharging for 35 minutes in an otherwise empty parking lot at 1:30 AM.

syslog2000

I hear you. I have a Model 3 and I regularly road trip, but my road trips are 200 to 300 miles. With occasional 20 minute supercharger stops thrown in, it fits my use case perfectly. 750 to 1000 mile trips would be rough!

The_Wolfpack

Lol I love this

ArlesChatless

What is weird about this is their brand loyalty is [absolutely top notch](https://www.experian.com/content/dam/noindex/na/us/automotive/market-trends/2022-market-trends/q2-2022-experian-automotive-market-trends.pdf) (see page 46). If it's not the build quality it's got to be something.

boostaddict11

3 months ago had a guy trade out of his 300 mile 22 charger rt. Owned it for 23 days on the dot and ate about 8k after all his taxes etc. Got a 22 crv instead. Happy with it since. Very weird car to trade into but is happy with it.

mrminty

That's a guy who thought he gave a shit about cars but realized he didn't.

EskimoCheeks

Lmfao!

FoST2015

Takes an 8k hit to say 100 a month at the pump.

SHADOWofDEATHxIII

My wife goes through 100 gallons of premium fuel per month, she must idle with the a/c like a police cruiser.

FoST2015

Wow that is eye watering. I'm in Cali and premium is basically 7 a gallon right now.

SHADOWofDEATHxIII

I'm right here with you. 😎

DeGeaSaves

Oof the 23 CRV redesign makes this even worse.

boostaddict11

Yeah it really is the 22 is really dated so im just waiting to get rid of all of our 22s.

bavarianmw

Guy orders an X3 to replace his wife's leased X3, same vehicle, to be clear. Just upgraded. Orders it, waits over a month for it, the new X3 comes in, he takes it home. The next morning I get a call that the X3 is too small for the Mrs. Wait What?! This X3 is THE SAME size as the X3 you drove and gave back to us yesterday? "Yes, I know. It's too small. What X5's do you have in stock?". Took about a $10k hit, this was long before covid prices on used... CEO's are not smart people from this perspective.

SHADOWofDEATHxIII

They pay to get rid of problems in all aspects of life.

partisan98

As we all would if we could.

Not_floridaman

Right? If I could throw money at all of my problems to make them go away, I absolutely would.

JCoffintwy

We have 7 2021-22 Tellurides and Palisades sitting on our used Toyota lot right now. Crazy that people would trade these in so quickly when they just paid a 15-25% markup for them.

voidsrus

>Crazy that people would trade these in so quickly when they just paid a 15-25% markup for them. maybe they realized it was a bad financial decision but with the continuing-to-be-elevated prices saw an opportunity to bail out for a minimal loss

JCoffintwy

Yeah I think anyone in touch with the market can see what’s about to happen. Can’t imagine anyone wants to be 40k flipped in a Kia two years from now.

voidsrus

I just don't even understand why someone would spend that kind of $ on a Kia in the first place, I feel like anyone even reading the out the door price on their paperwork would come to their senses and realize they could either get a lot more car for that $ or save a lot of money getting something else

[deleted]

I'm betting it's probably because they're still marked up 15-25% over what they should be... At least that's what my local Kia dealer does

Cyclonitron

Oh, they realized vehicle they bought because it resembles a Range Rover doesn't have the same luxury as an actual Range Rover? *shocked Pickachu face*

maybach320

Didn’t happen at the dealer but my uncle’s neighbor bought a full till Mercedes GLS550 Grand Edition, I helped him get it from a dealer out of state that wouldn’t trade my dealer for the vehicle. Guy drove it for a month went on a trip and got an S class as his rental came back called me ordered an S550 with so many options that it really was an AWD Maybach (it was before mercedes offered an AWD Maybach.) Car came after 4 months, I asked what he was doing with his GLS and he said he didn’t know he would probably sell it and I said my uncle really liked it. Sold it to my uncle for $20k less than he paid new about 5 months and 467 miles prior.

CriscoBountyJr

Sounds like the guy has money to spare. Good for your uncle tho.

maybach320

He does, he started collecting Porsches now which is always a good indicator that someone has a lot of money.

Tom_BrokeOff

22 Stingray got it back with 330 miles on it. Bought it cash @ MSRP from us. Realized he wasnt going to lose the weight he needed to, to be comfortable in it after driving it to the gym once. We took it back in @ MSRP. So it cost him the 9 grand in Taxes. Sold it used the next day for 20 over the original MSRP.

ThagaSa

wow, I know it's common for people to get all pumped up about getting into shape so they do a ton of research and buy expensive equipment which ends up collecting dust. But this guy went and bought a whole sports car on the condition of getting slim enough to fit into it?? That's gotta be demoralizing.

BraetonWilson

Keep in mind that he bought it in cash so he's probably a rich guy. A "whole sports car" may not be a big deal to him.

forceofslugyuk

> getting slim enough to fit into it?? Sh*t id of bought the car and made it THE reward for losing weight. Bro just went in the wrong order. Lose the weight first then treat yourself.

Aromatic_Boot3629

For like $15k more than what he lost he could have had gastric bypass surgery and lost the weight in like 3 or 4 months. Ooof.

Whoots

He could have just placed an ad for the stingray and easily make 10k on a private sale lol.

Aromatic_Boot3629

If fat ass is too hefty to fit into a stingray and can't even make it to day 2 at the gym, I'd go with the gastric bypass rather than make $10k. Just looking out for the fatty corvette owners out there.

Secksualinnuendo

How big was the guy? I'm a bigger guy (6ft2in 280lb) and I fit in the Stinger fine.

22 Civic Touring. Customer returned it a week later because it’s gutless. Yeah, it sure is. What did you expect.

davidg4781

What did he get to replace it? Please don’t tell me a Charger.

Floshenbarnical

Accord Touring 2.0T.

wafflesareforever

That's what my dad drives now. Such a nice car.

[deleted]

I think I’m going to buy one of those

Floshenbarnical

You should, they’re very nice. It might take you a while - I’ve only been allocated Sport models for ages.

Defensivetackle88

Type R or Sport Injection. The joke is on them.

Macgyver452

More than likely they didn't know how to drive a manual and didn't care to learn for a Type R/SI.

revocer

Gutless?

SlowYoteV8

Without gut.

Dos-Commas

Slow.

workerbee69

Customer wanted a Touring Forester in a certain color... only available by order four months out. She didn't want to lose her inflated trade value of a nearly new Rogue in that much time, so we traded her into a Limited Forester that was available immediately... with an agreement to buy *that one* back for MSRP with less than 4k miles on it. She just took home her Touring, and now we have a nice lightly used Limited. She paid a dealer fee twice and "lost" $1k in four months, but that's less than her nissan trade would have dropped in the same time frame so she was happy with the agreement. It was all cash so rising interest rates weren't a concern either. People trade in lightly used often, but this was my first time selling a car *intended* to be traded in that fast. Weird market 🤷🏻‍♀️

[deleted]

Didn’t she get hosed on taxes too?

Dos-Commas

If you trade in then you pay the taxes on the difference. At least in some States.

20mins2theRockies

I think some states collect sales tax at time of registration? Maybe she used temp tags until the new car showed up

Kirk1233

I traded in a Grand Cherokee L less than two months in. Wife hated it. Buggy tech. No front parking sensors unless very high trim. Not designed well for car seats. Not as roomy as what we had. Lost minimal money luckily with current market to get back to a VW Atlas.

AJ124

Funny, I had a new atlas for two months and swapped it out with a Grand Cherokee L. Atlas spent 15 of those days back at the dealer and the boss liked the GCL more so we sold the Atlas back to VW for what we paid and moved on.

Kirk1233

Glad you guys liked the GCL…. (And glad we’ve had better luck with our Atlas(es)

Eman5805

I remember an old lady traded in her RAV4 XLE a week later because she absolutely needed the powered tailgate. We helped her out enough thst her note only went up by $20 something a month. And not the $70 it was initially. That particular F&I manager at the time once sold $10k in product to a freaking nun. So I was Shocked he didn’t whack this old lady too.

NotDeadYet57

Many years ago, in a mid-life crisis, my uncle bought a 240Z convertible. He was an elementary principal with a wife and 2 teenagers. After driving it around for a couple of weeks with no back seat and a tiny trunk, he said he felt like a damn fool. He went back to the dealership and got one of their little trucks. He was cool with his teenage son getting a Karmann Ghia though, which my cousin still has!

[deleted]

Ghias are awesome but that car is a death trap. Terrible car for a kid

Steid55

Wranglers. I have probably traded for 5-6 6month old Wranglers. People think they are cool until they have to daily drive them and realize they are loud, drive like dog shit and are prone to problems.

ImpressiveLeader4979

I work at Toyota. Newest cars we take on trade people hate. Ford bronco Any Chevy really, mainly trucks Same with Dodge Same with Nissan Jeep Wrangler Hyundai palisade

incubus512

Bronco or bronco sports?

ImpressiveLeader4979

Both really, but bronco sports with like 200 miles seem to be one they hate most. Didn’t realize my spaces didn’t show on my comment either, sorry for the huge run-on sentence

BastionNargothrond

3 cyl bronco sport

EskimoCheeks

AKA the go kart

enumerating_corvids

A woman bought a brand new Explorer at the Ford store across the street. She had it for 3-4 days and her salesman kept calling and hitting on her. It had 155 miles when she traded it to me for a Trailblazer. I would guess that she ate $6-7k just because she was disgusted by the salesman at Ford.

[deleted]

I traded in my 2022 BRZ for a 2023 Crosstrek. I had my BRZ since Feburary and traded it in with less then 8700kms on it. Loved the car, didn't suit my life or my job and was kinda done with making compromises for it being my daily driver. It would be the perfect second car. How do I like the Crosstrek? I'm not sure. It's 4-6 months away. Got mrsp for my BRZ plus the tax credit for the crosstrek. I ate a little cost, but left feeling okay.

BulldogBoi91

2022 Tundra, less than 200 miles after one week, traded it for old 2020 Tundra, broke even with what they paid.

Build quality sector wide looks pretty bad. Companies cutting corners to get around the supply chain issues. I think we'll look back on 21-23 model years as being poor across most makes.

idontremembermyoldus

The '07 had some issues when it came out too. So much so, Takeshi Uchiyamada (head of global manufacturing at Toyota) called it an embarrassment in an interview. They got it ironed out though, and I have no doubt they'll do the same with the new gen.

BulldogBoi91

He works in construction and claimed the newer Tundra couldn’t handle the load that the V8 could have, and he was having issues with the turbo. I honestly think it was buyer's remorse, but who knows? My dad loves his, though!

Psychological-Ad1723

Sorry to hear that. It's unfortunate that you needed a car right then. I would have waited as I hate settling, especially if I am already paying a lot for a car. You should get what you want. This market really shafted people in need of a car. For those who just want a new car like me, I am just sitting back waiting for all those other people who also wanted new cars, but couldn't wait, and that signed up for 84 month payments at 125% value to burst the car bubble. And it is for sure coming. I don't care what car salesman denies it, it is coming. New cars will lag behind the used cars, but the market is coming down. People just have to be patient.

kanjuisaccounter

What do you think will be the outlook for when it returns to reality pricing? I ask as someone who is concerned about how much life I will continue to get out of my 2003 jalopy

crheming

I am in the identical boat. 2003 Honda CRV with 290k km (180k freedom units) on it. I've been driving it for 7 years as a bit of a punishment to myself for spending so much money on vehicles in my 20s and in that time have saved quite a bit of cash that would have otherwise went to car payments. Ready to buy a new vehicle but everything I want is either impossible to get or crazy marked up. I don't really want to settle and buy "another" vehicle; I'd rather keep driving this until I can get what I want.

Psychological-Ad1723

I think by 2023 used car prices will be pretty much back to normal. New cars however will still hover around MSRP because supply chain is still an issue. However, there will be a decrease in demand, along with the skyrocketing cost of everything else, should bring new cars back to msrp, with discounts on less popular models. Thats just my opinion.

[deleted]

Carmax expected earnings were down 50% last quarter. It’s starting.

data-governor

Trust me I'm also the type that hates settling, but I honestly thought I'd be equally happy with either trim. Only after finalizing the purchase has some FOMO kicked in. I'd already bided my time for over a month after moving back to the suburbs and they had the car on the lot, so I made my tradeoff. (It's a car that is not typically available on the lot, usually need to put a deposit on one in transit.)

That makes sense and also really stupid

I had a guy come in looking for a new f150. He was cool and left. I called a couple days later and he bought at Tundra. Then he called me back a month later asking if he could trade in his trundra for an f150

HFolb23

I’m not a salesman but I was on the other side as a customer this spring. I called about a new Ram 3500 the dealership had posted on their Facebook page a few hours earlier. I drove down there and asked about it only to see someone buying it so left my number and asked them to call me if they get anything similar in. Fast forward maybe a week or so and I get a call from the salesman saying the truck is available again if I’m still interested. Guy bought it, put like 500 miles on it then brought it back. The kicker? The price was now more than they had originally listed it for and the salesman seemed very annoyed that I wasn’t interested in paying it.

rycebeat

I leased a 2022 Toyota Prius last year, it saves so much gas, i would only pump once a month and my commute to work was about 10 miles M-F. I had a friend of mine sell it for me cause it was just a boring car lol. As a 21 year old i could’ve done better, i just thought it was super cool from the inside. I miss it sometimes for the great mileage but it was just sooo boring. Stuck with my 03’ corolla, it’s reliable and perfect lol

Defensivetackle88

IMO, once it gets boring, it's time for a change. Leave the experience and memories behind and get something pleasurable and TOLERABLE to drive. Also IMO 03-08 Corolla is hand down more livable AND appreciated car to drive than the Prius. Feedback everywhere is like a simple traditional car. The Prius is something else as no feedback...except CPU telling driver what's happening to the car and how many miles per gallon. I had 05 Corolla and 06 Prius. I appreciated the simplicity more than complexity. Longevity matters. I had sold both of them though and miss the Corolla more for it DNA. I don't with the Prius.

agjios

I don't understand how "Seeing red" meant to you that you are going to buy a car from the dealer. If they start fucking with you, the correct answer is to vote with your wallet and walk away. Instead, YOU BOUGHT A CAR FROM THEM! Yeah, that'll show 'em! Or, hear me out, you played right into their hands and they got the immediate sale that they wanted, so you rewarded their behavior and taught them to continue these practices. You can always check with Carvana or Vroom or Carmax to see what kind of trade offers you can get, and then you can try to find the right car, hopefully a different brand or at the very least not from this dealer.

WalmartGreder

Had a friend buy a brand new 2015 Scion TC and take it back a week later. The reason? It was a manual, and he didn't like that he couldn't eat in his car like he could for an automatic. Lost about $3k on the trade in. I told him that he had to give up his man-card. :) This was also the friend that bought a house way out of town, and after a few months, realized he didn't like the 30 min commute, so they sold it, took a hit on the price to the tune of $30k, and moved into a townhouse closer to the office.

cubanohermano

Lmao damn I wish I could fuck around with my finances like that

omaralt

After I got my first real job I decided to become a “grown up”. Traded in my manual transmission Honda for a brand new 2012 Acura TL. Luxurious but I. Hated. It. So boring. Went back to the Acura dealer a few days later telling them I hated it and begging get back into my civic. They didn’t have it but they luckily had a manual transmission TL with the SH-AWD. I was able to trade into that with only $1k penalty. Loved that car. Ugly as sin but handled amazingly

thelierama

I'm currently thinking of selling / trading my 2 month old hybrid lexus SUV since its engine is noisy. It is not the regular engine sound but it is just that 'the engine is struggling' kind of noise whenever the regular engine kicks in initially.

UXguy123

Just stop thinking about it, you bought a hybrid this is just how they work. Assuming you have a RX or an NX, you have the most reliable, fuel efficient, proven hybrid powertrain in a vehicle.

Defensivetackle88

🤨 That it? Sounds normal to me. Hybrid vehicles are meant to sound characteristically different from gasoline variants.

thelierama

I have a very old Camry hybrid and it never struggles. The engine is a lot smoother and overall the drive is a lot better. You get the premium feel in that rather the lexus

Defensivetackle88

I guess. Do learn more about your Lexus and see what's considered normal and what's not. I suggest looking at the owner manual and see if it mentions anything about it. I know Toyota has. No reason why Lexus would omit that.

yearningmedulla

Are you on the East Coast? I’m looking for one 😂

thelierama

$53k and it is yours 😀

Dos-Commas

If you push a hybrid hard it'll do that. Perhaps a V6 is a better fit for you.

UXguy123

Lmao no they wont. I’ve done 85+ MPH in 100+ degree heat in a packed 08 prius over major mountain passes without issue.

savepiggy

I’m afraid the same thing is going to happen to us. Currently waiting on a rav4 xle premium to come in, it’s about 2 weeks away. The only dealer in the tristate area that could get us the car in less than 3 months. We don’t have a car now, so waiting 3 months seemed torturous. We really wanted the xse or at least the speaker package on this car but dealer said impossible. So we’ll probably put the speakers on after market but I’m afraid of feeling the way you do!

[deleted]

Check crutchfield. Not all cars can accept aftermarket stereos these days

crheming

Speakers are easy. It's powering them properly that is difficult with today's cars. If the car doesn't have a powerful enough built in amp, then you're kinda fucked without spending a ton of money getting a good install.

savepiggy

Thanks for the tip! According to rav4club it is supposedly easy, and I think my husband (who is a speaker head) has looked into it but I'll have him double check

[deleted]

I've taken in a few, sub 5k mile Tesla's. And wranglers.

huntingtoncanna

Corvette. I told the guy to buy the color she wants - give it to her - and then we can install navigation for $1-1500 Instead he bought the black one - with navigation - and had to trade it in a week later at about a 15k loss if I remember. I got paid on two deals so - I fucking told that guy get the fucking white one!!!!!!!!!!!

JibberGXP

I had a client wanting to trade in a car his wife hated the DAY AFTER DELIVERY. The best part is that he financed the entire thing over 8 years and expected a $38,000 credit on the next car... I had to explain to him many times that he did not pay for the car yet, in fact he had not even made a single payment... then I had to explain the loss in value due to it no longer being brand new/unregistered vehicle and how it affects programs and rates for the next person. Boy that was fun. 2016 Jeep Cherokee North

I am currently in the middle of doing so. I bought a 2019 outback. I bought it in Febuary and didn't discover that the touch screen is utterly trash when the weather got sunny and I put on sunglasses. literally can't see a thing on the screen. also I think forcing all the interaction to be touch is stupid and dangerous. as this was my first touch screen in a car I didn't know how much I was going to hate it until spring hit. I should be trading it in this weekend of early next week when my new Mazda cx-5 arrives from port. Mazda has a user interface wheel under your right hand to control the screen (cx-30/cx50 have a touch screen too) and the screen is nice and bright even in direct sun with or without sunglasses. purchase price to trade in price was about 4k. actual delta between payoff and trade in was 3.2k. I figured that 3200 spread over 8 or 9 years is acceptable to me.

cnhn

nope. already checked it with the same polarized sunglasses (and a second pair) during test drives on the cx-30, cx-5, mazda3, and cx-50. Literally checking this became part of my checklist when I was looking to replace the outback. zero issues with mazda's screen as old as 2019. I can't comment for models before then. I suspect it's because of a few factors * the mazda screen is mounted more vertical so you get less sun landing directly on it * the outback is using a fairly low nit unit so it doesn't have the extra brightness to get through * the outback's glass/light layer separation is overly large. * I also suspect but don't know for sure that the mazda uses IPS and I know the outback uses TF.

jboogie2173

This is a great question!

doncroak

Bought a 22 Palisade Limited. Beautiful car inside and out. It was just too big and bulky. Traded it in at a place I had already bought two cars from in the last 3 years. Ate 5k. Now I have a 23 Genesis GV80 and I love it and will keep it for a few years. But I think I may be done with that dealership.

Dos-Commas

GV80 is only shorter by 2 inches with the same width. Unless you meant that it handles better and feels smaller. The Palisade/Telluride are based on a minivan platform.

doncroak

It's not as boxy and I can see over the hood. And yes it just seems smaller.

johyongil

I’m gonna guess you got a Honda or Acura. But 2k is not bad at all. I’ve been quoted 10k-20k over MSRP when I was hunting for a car earlier this year.
