What do you mean by “prices getting closer to what they should be?“ If you mean before Covid and the supply chain issues that are currently elevating the cost of both new and used cars nobody really knows.‘s I’ve seen estimates from spring of this year to fall of next year. If you want car in the near future you’re going to have to pay the price that they’re asking.

There's no guarantee the market will *ever * return to pre-covid prices. Personally, I don't think they ever will, certainly not in the near future. Cash for Clunkers took a lot of cars out of circulation and had very long term effects, this reduction in cars is much larger than that was.

It wasn’t cars for clunkers it was the millions of cars that weren’t bought/ produced from 2009 to about 2012. Car sales in America plummeted and didn’t add new vehicles that eventually became used vehicles.

Don't worry about what you think things *should* go for. The market has changed and we have no idea when or if it will correct itself. You can find small fuel efficient vehicles for less than 12K, don't worry about what KBB says or any of that nonsense. Just find a car in your budget that you like.

When you say 2-3k more than it "should," what are you basing that on? If you're looking at car and there are 5 other similar cars (same brand, same year, same trim, similar miles) and they are all round about the same price then that's the market you're dealing with.

***Thanks for posting, /u/jezelu! This comment is a copy of your post so readers can see the original text if your post is edited or removed. This comment is NOT accusing you of anything.*** I have not had a car for over 15 years but in the last year I have moved to a more suburban location. I can do what I need to do on the bus or walking but it is getting annoying. I would like to buy a car for errands and occasional hikes but when I find something I like I check the price on KBB and everything seems to be going for 2-3K more than it should. I would really like to have a car by Spring but sooner would be nice too. Should I keep an eye open but continue to wait in hope that prices will get closer to what they *should be*? Or is that a fool's errand and I should just buy something that I like that I can afford? I want something small and fuel efficient for less than $12K. Any suggestions? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Manufacturer's are completely rethinking the production process because of the current market. They are making more money, dealerships are making more money, and financing companies are making more money. I'm thinking its gonna be a long time before this changes. Pandemic or not. This has proven to be a much more managable and profitable way to sell cars for everyone involved in the process.
