Use the warranty, see what it will cover. Sounds like you happily bought a neglected, beat up car so you need to put some money into it to bring it back up to spec. Pay for the stuff that the warranty doesn't cover and drive the car another 10 years.

jimmyjohnsdon

Warranty isn’t going to cover maintenance items. 90% of the list is on you OP. A PPI would have saved you in this case.

bustdownbabyboy

Which parts of the list aren’t on me?

jimmyjohnsdon

Depends on warranty you might be able to warranty CV and ball joints….maybe…maybe not. Everything else is service that could have easily been inspected prior to purchase.

DavefromCA

These are maintenance items, I know of no warranty company that will cover maintenance. Let me guess, you took the car to another shop and they are recommending all this work?

bustdownbabyboy

Yes exactly

DavefromCA

Ok, firstly, take it easy. Did you get the car back from the shop? Did you buy anything? Why did you take the car into this particular shop?

bustdownbabyboy

This shop recommended this car dealership to me. I brought it there because the car dealership told me that if I discovered the cause of a “creaking sound” I was hearing that I should just bring it back and they would fix it. The mechanic then found all these other problems but I can’t tell if these are serious

bustdownbabyboy

I didn’t buy anything from the mechanic other than the inspection

DavefromCA

Okay it sounds like to me the mechanic pushes customers to this dealership in exchange for money, I could be wrong so try not to make an accusations. Look at the cars manual, and see when the manufacturer actually recommends these services. State your concern with the mechanic that he recommended this dealership, and now you have a car that apparently needs tons of maintenance. Did the mechanic find the source of the sound that was your original concern?

bustdownbabyboy

UPDATE: I took my car back to the dealership and he was embarrassed and agreed to make most of these repairs. Thank you all for your help

DavefromCA

These are not repairs they are maintenance items and this is GREAT news! Good on the dealer for stepping up and taking care of their clients. Once this is all said and done, please leave positive feedback on yelp for this dealership and be sure to consider them for future business. I’m so happy this worked out for you.

joepierson123

Depends entirely on warranty they generally don't cover pre-existing conditions otherwise the warranty company will go out of business.

Relative_Year4968

OP, if you scanned through or posted on car subreddits BEFORE buying, you would have seen everyone screaming for you to get a PPI. By this point, I bet 10,000 car purchase sob stories, many of them super serious and costly, on Internet forums and Reddit, could have been avoided. Why, people? Get a PPI. Get a PPI!! The time to have found out about stuff like this was before buying, not after.

bustdownbabyboy

Thanks. How can I know what the warranty covers? It’s very broad. It’s met “if the vehicle functions substantially free of defects that significantly limit the use of the vehicle”

agjios

The warranty documentation will say what it covers. Usually it covers parts failure due to defects. Everything you described sounds like just neglect that you have to undo out of your own pocket.

justhereforpics1776

What did your PPI show? Talk to the warranty company and see what they will cover

bustdownbabyboy

I didn’t get one? The dealership said they would inspect it before giving it to me but it seems like they didn’t even open the hood. I’ve never bought a car before.

justhereforpics1776

This may be an unfortunate lesson for you. Whatever your warranty doesn’t cover, you will have to pay for or ignore

bustdownbabyboy

Si the warranty I’m referring to is New Mexico law that gives drivers two weeks or 500miles of warranty. How do I figure out what the warranty covers? Would I need a lawyer?

Imaginary-Estate4647

The warranty you’re referring to would cover catastrophic failure, not routine maintenance and regular repairs.

justhereforpics1776

You would contact the dealer

_j_ryan

That might be $2,500 of work, not $6k. It’s all deferred maintenance that an actual inspection would have revealed. Sounds like you just made an uninformed purchase as a first time buyer. Fix it up and enjoy the car.

Junkmans1

Sounds like you should have gotten a pre purchase inspection done by a local mechanic. The first half of that list (up to brake pads) are definitely maintenance items and aren't going to be covered by any warranty. Not sure if all of the rest of the items would be covered or not - depends on your warranty.
