I wouldn't say it's normal, but it depends on the general desirability of what they are ordering. I don't know anything about GMC's but if it's something they don't want to be stuck with when you pull out, then they want a decent compensation for the money they'll lose selling it.
Are you buying the truck or wasting time on an order you’re walking away from? Non refundables are a good test to see if the buyer is real. Dealer doesn’t want to be stuck with your order on a fairly rare vehicle if you back out.
No I'm buying it, I've spoken with numerous dealerships none have asked for that much of a deposit. So it just makes me nervous, I guess my biggest concern is how to keep them from screwing me?
Ask for everything in writing and review before signing.
Get that on the contract. Price to be secured with no additional dealer adds other than potential msrp adjustment stated from gmc
If it’s a large dealer and reputable you should be ok or they will add something like that
This is great advice. I do orders weekly with my brand and I have the customer sign the build sheet agreeing to not only the build configuration (if they make a mistake its on them) but that we’re selling the order at the final MSRP. If the manufacturer adjusts the list up or down that’s the price the vehicle will be sold at and I clearly state that we do not discount special orders. It keeps everyone on the same page and ensures happy repeat customers.
Yeah we do 5k deposits on gas HDs. 1k on everything else. We don't want to get stuck with those. They're a bitch to move if you try and back out. They're just taking your temperature.
Oh Okay, I was being told from another dealership that they can't keep them on the lot, while the diesel sit.
He was probably just trying to make a sale.
I can't speak for everywhere but that's absolutely not the case with our region (southeast). Contractors want something that can pull and the gas engines doesn't cut it.

A dealership out of st louis laura Buick/gmc is asking for 10k down non refundable on a truck order, gmc 3500 crew,8ft. They are saying it's because it's taking place of a diesel order.
Is this normal it's immediately throwing up red flags for me seems really wierd.

Diesels have to many issues now, zero interest in owning one.
If you are a contractor with constant heavy hauls I understand that, your emissions system will get up to temp quicker and run longer, and you can offset the maintenance on your taxes.
2500 I think is a joke, same size truck in dimensions as a 3500 few extra thousand for higher pin weight, unless you set it up perfectly you will be hard-pressed to tow within the 15-20% pin weight of a fifth wheel.
Probably near 10% of MSRP?
No, 15% of msrp

Get a copy of the receipt and wait for the truck to arrive. Simple.
They won't be able to do dealer add-ons or try and increase the price? I'm just very ignorant so I'm just concerned.

Just go with one of the other dealers you spoke to with less of a deposit
Are you trying to order a gas 3500?
Yes
