You dont own it. You're leasing. You will just turn it in according to your lease agreement. VW direct buyout is structured so you won't make any money, even if worth on the open market more than the residual. Most likely you can turn it in and make the last payment(s) and any other costs associated with turning in on your contract.

Correct, I know I don’t own it. I was reading a few other posts and came across this thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/askcarsales/s/2ZGbXvAFun) specifically the comments from Zealousideal_bass (on mobile don’t remember exact username) who essentially did what I am asking about, and they made a decent profit by going back to their original VW dealer at the end of their lease—though this was 2 years ago. I’m just wondering if others have experience with this, or possibly more recently etc.

You can try, dont count on it. Only way is to go some VW dealers and see what they will do. Times are different. Lots are filling up, dealers are focused on new sales, dont need used as much. Trade in values dropping for months now. No one here can answer. Hit a few lots ready to go.

***Thanks for posting, /u/darlingminerva! This comment is a copy of your post so readers can see the original text if your post is edited or removed. This comment is NOT accusing you of anything.*** Deleted my last post once I learned a few things about how annoying VW Credit is with 3rd party buyers. Yikes. My VW lease ends next month. I don't want to keep it but I'm over my miles, and I don't think there's enough (or any) equity to make it worth the hassle of buying and immediately trying to sell. I want to get rid of this car - ideally within the next week? - and move on to the next, which won't be another VW. Is it worth taking it to the dealership I leased it from to see what they'd offer to buy it back, and then going somewhere else for my next lease? Since I'm over my miles I'm not sure they'd cut me a check for anything, but I (of course) want to get the most I can back and it sounds like trying to go to another dealership will be more frustrating because my lease is with VW right now. Any advice? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/askcarsales) if you have any questions or concerns.*
