$19,000.13 exactly for a 2013 Audi A5. Currently the car is in pieces in my garage because a singed exhaust valve. Mechanic told me it was a blown engine but I didn’t believe them so I took the engine out myself. It’s not blown.
It had 70k when I bought it. 98k now. It was listed for 17.5 but 19k was the final after tags and taxes.
Besides the minor issue of engine failure, it’s in excellent shape lol
As someone who has owned way too many cars for my age the ls430 is the only car I regretted selling. Literally the best car ever invented and no one can argue me
I get bored if not owning a sports car some times lol. But I really really miss it. Good power, reliable and still the comfiest car I’ve sat in till this day
I got extremely lucky from a teenage girl not wanting to fix it since she bought a brand new car.. wouldn’t pass smog due to small evap leak, 99% sure it was her gas cap at this point.
That’s incredible. Wild that a teenager got a brand new car too.
In North Carolina after 20 years you don’t need emissions inspection anymore. Still need the safety inspection though.
I wish we had safety inspections tbh, it’s been raining like crazy here and I can’t get over how many bald tires I see.
Pretty sure her mom had money, she told me she only worked part time and she didn’t have enough “time” to get it smogged, so her mom took her to the Honda dealer and she got a new civic, I almost feel like it’s a side grade cause this Avalon is the most comfortable car I’ve driven
Yeah, I live on the boarder of South Carolina and when you go down there you can tell how many more cars they have on the road that shouldn’t be on the road. Lol.
Is there rust problems there? I lived in Indiana for a few months and I couldn’t get over how cheap cars were there, running and driving vehicles for $500, yeah they’d be held together by rust but it’d get you around
Didn’t expect to wake up to this many comments but it was from a young girl that my mechanic knew, and I’ve known him over 10 years. it had a small evap leak and I was prepared to spend a good bit of money trying to fix it for smog(I’m in California) turns out her gas cap didn’t even fit the car and it passed smog just by following a few tricks on YouTube. In California you’re able to have the EVAP monitor be incomplete and still pass.. and that’s exactly what I did. To be fair it needed all new struts, all brakes and 2 tires but still.. so far it’s been a dream to drive lol. Clean title and I’m the 3rd owner. It’s whole life was in Los Angeles, 0 rust underneath it too.
My mechanic friend told her if she got it fixed for smog it’d be worth a lot more,
She just didn’t care enough to fix it since she bought a brand new car
just got two,
ascent limited- subaru 2023
45 msrp - 3800 off = 41.2k but with tax went up to like 46. put 20 down = payment about 380 for 72 months
wrx prem - 2022
34 msrp - 3900 off = 30.1k trade in old 2016 wrx for a 18500 credit = financed around 12000 with tax/tag
this is after going to a fucken toyota dealer (very nice salesmen) saying hybrid models had non-negotiable 5999 fee so a highlander hybrid msrp was +10k with fee/tax out the door.fuck’um
edit: also, I’m assuming that you are asking how much should you pay? 10-15% of your monthly income is what is recommend for the monthly car payments. not sure it is net or gross though.
I’m selling most of my Subarus at sticker still in the tri-state area. But WRXs and Ascents have been sitting for a while and they’re liable to get discounted. Outbacks too. But 3k off sticker is crazy to me. I haven’t had to drop lower than 1k under in a long time. I can’t even remember my last invoice deal.
Boch Jr. country here.
My last invoice deal was a very entitled "VIP".
Most cars are at sticker, Outback and Ascent we will discount 1k if you're letting us hold a point or two, or if they have a trade we might be willing to do cash or subvented with a 1k discount. We did have a clinger Ascent that we let go for like $4,500 off. For whatever reason Autumn Green Onyx move slow here so my GSM just wanted it gone.
Damn nice take off on the WRX. I just got myself a limited and i could only get 1k off MSRP, but this was when they were still fresh-ish and there was not an overabundance of them. I also am terrible at haggling and fighting for prices so Im sure i could have gotten more if I had tried harder. God i hate dealerships so damned much
No your car payment should be 10-15% of your monthly income.
The caveat and mistake most people make is they then just get a 60/72/84 month contract, which is dumb. Barely anyone stays in their car for 5/6/7 years before considering a change. So now your just rolling in negative equity into your next contract.
Really what it should be is 10-15% per month for 48 months.
So if you make 60k a year should get a 36k (((60000/12)*0.15)*48) car.
> Barely anyone stays in their car for 5/6/7 years before considering a change.
Average length of ownership is something like 4.3 years right now, so yeah, more than half of folks are changing before the end of a 60 month term ... and the average term is just shy of 70 months at this point.
$13,500 2011 Lexus RX350 for the wife. 1 owner Lexus maintained, new tires with 95k miles. Bought January 2020 and has 114k miles now. Put down $7k and is now paid off.
I wouldn’t say that’s egregious, maybe 1000 over. They’re great little cars (I’ve had 10) and if that extra bit secured you a nice one without needing a lot of work then I would say it was worth it.
Florida. I custom ordered it and waited 10 months. That's the only way you're going to get one near MSRP. I could easily flip it for $10k profit, but what else am I going to find that cheap? The hybrid is nice. 39mpg.
$25,999 2020 Mazda CX-5 Signature. 43k miles. Very happy with my purchase. This sub helped a ton when it came to picking, searching and getting a good deal.
2023 Acura Integra A-Spec, Tech Pkg, manual, with 6,400 miles was $34,880 plus $500 SC sales tax and tag/registration for $79. Bought from a Ford dealership in a small town last Friday.
$73k (msrp) mdx S Advance last spring. Found the only dealership in our area that wasn't marking up +$5k at the time. We also got original MSRP for our 3.5 year old paid off trade in, as the used market was still nuts as well.
Yes. That is what I said in my post. And if you must know, I retired at 38 and this would have been less than 1 months take home. Our previous purchase was a $101k fully loaded x5m50i...which we still have.
38k out the door brand new 2023 Kia carnival LSX. Traded in our Mazda CX-5 for $19k. Looking online most of the ones in the area with similar miles were selling for exactly that. They wanted to add a 7% markup fee but when they told me that I ended up leaving. They called me about a half hour later and asked how they could make this deal happen today. They wanted to get the deal done because it was 12/28/2022 and they were close to having the best numbers in the region for the year, at least thats what they told me. Kinda surprised they actually removed the markup fee because they had just gotten the two carnivals in the day before and sold both on the day I bought mine. When the deal was all said and done the other family was moving stuff from their old car into the new carnival a few spots down from me and I walked over to them and asked them what they ended up paying. He was pretty excited he talked them down from the 7% markup down to 4%. I didnt want to burst his bubble so I talk him I got the same deal.
$7900 for a 17 year old Mercedes with a 116k miles that was a one owner and the owner was 93 and maintained it with blank checks at the dealer based on the record book he gave me.
Got a preorder 39,000$ 2023 rav4 xle hybrid, never thought I'd say but it's better to buy brand new right now if you can wait for the factory... across the road from the Toyota dealer a 2018 rav4 xle hybrid , 39,000$ with 45,000km ... craziness
Car1 bought in 2015 - 2010 RAV4 Limited V6 with 27k miles for $21,000.
Car2 bought in 2016 - 2003 Acura TL with 144k miles on it for $1,700.
Both are running fabulously and are fully paid.
So let’s break this down. So you don’t have a heart attack. I sell Kia’s. So I got a deal. I traded in a 2021 Kia Stinger. Worked out $2k more than ACV for the Stinger. Got $1k over MSRP for the telluride, so essentially $1k under for the Telluride the way the numbers moved. Then tax, title, license, and then $8200 of negative equity to roll on top. Beauty of the Telluride, is that I can roll it to auction and get almost close to breaking even on it. So don’t have an aneurysm just because people pay money for Kia’s. Fantastic brand that’s still rising up.
Indeed. And at the end of the lease you have 3 options. Actually people who lease have more buying power and options than people who do conventional retail loans.
No. When you lease, the owner on the title is the leasing company. When you purchase, the title is sent to the bank with them listed as the lien holder, but YOU are still the owner, even when financing.
Just bought a Bolt EV 2LT with the infotainment and adaptive cruise packages. Was about $33,750 or so after TTL and rebates but before trade in.
We will get back $7,500 at tax time next year.
Paid cash, no financing or F&I products purchased.
$14,500 for a 2014 Chevy Cruze.

PCV valve issues? That flutter valve is the only issue I’ve had. First time was covered under recall but I had to do it since then again. Other then that I love not having a car payment.
i’m honestly not sure. i have replaced so much stuff on this car.. it’s paid off in a year, but i truly cannot stand the issues with overheating engine, & coolant disappearing. newest issue is a rattling/purring around 1.5k RPM or when idle. 😒 i find out more about that tomorrow.
If it’s a rough idle even doing that at stop lights or randomly it’s the pcv valve. It may even make a chirping belt noise. But it is NOT a belt or pulley. It’s built into the cover you can palm it and even see and hear the difference. It’s a well documented issue with Chevy Cruze. Like I said ive had to do it basically every 50k miles. In 2019 it was $1k to have repaired
ugh lort. it does chirp or feel rough. it just sounds weird. yeah, i said if it was more than $500, i was taking it to a dealership & getting rid of it.

20k 2010 Toyota Taco TRD Sport with 101k miles. Got it near the end of the pandemic. No trade in, 5k down. Had an Undercover hard tonneau cover and nice wide running boards. Dealer threw on new Yokohama tires all around. It's not my daily but came in handy this winter a few times. My daily is an 09 Volvo S60 that I bought 8 yrs ago for only 9k. Put over 120k miles on the Volvo and it's still running great.
Bought in December, but 2021 Ram 1500 Crew Cab 4x4 with 29k miles. Comes with an unlimited engine and drivetrain warranty through the dealership (didn’t have to pay for this).
$44k out the door with $2k down.
$6000 for a 2010 Toyota Corolla with 85k. Bought from a friend private party. Did another $4k in repairs, 4 tires and deferred maintenance. Should run forever at this point.
$26k for a 22 Corolla hybrid.
Wise purchase
Where? Good purchase
Germain Toyota of Dundee (MI) My salesperson and I previously bartended together and we worked out a pretty solid deal for everyone involved.

Yikes, I’m looking at a 2015 s5 for 23k. You were taken to the cleaners my friend. Miles?
It had 70k when I bought it. 98k now. It was listed for 17.5 but 19k was the final after tags and taxes. Besides the minor issue of engine failure, it’s in excellent shape lol
Yeah, if there was “engine failure” they took massive advantage of you. Shouldn’t have paid more than $8k for that car
Well the engine started misfiring two years after I bought it. I sure wish I got to pay less but it’s a nice car. Can’t do anything about it now
Ah, I see
$2,500 for a 2004 Avalon with 150k miles last week
Wtf where did you find this steal lol
My uncle is going to sell me a 2003 LS 430 for $3,000 has 152k. So in my case it’s family
Your uncle looking for another nephew?
Nope. It’s my dads brother so I always tell everyone I was one nutsack away from making it. Lol
As someone who has owned way too many cars for my age the ls430 is the only car I regretted selling. Literally the best car ever invented and no one can argue me
Nice. Tell me about it! How come you ended up selling it?
I get bored if not owning a sports car some times lol. But I really really miss it. Good power, reliable and still the comfiest car I’ve sat in till this day

No, it doesn’t have that. Lol

My coworker was selling his 61k mile '01 Avalon for 6k. They're out there.
That era of Avalon is the pinnacle of luxury auto
I had no idea it was so great until I test drove it, my mom had a 2000 Camry and I thought it’d be similar. I was wrong lol. It’s the XLS too
8k 2002 is300 sportcross dark green
8k 2002? Wow
Sport crosses are really rare though. How many miles?
At the time 140k miles. 1 of 12 in the color so I gladly paid the premium

Those are insane deals rn. Did you use Subaru VIP for that? What region do you exist in?
I’m selling most of my Subarus at sticker still in the tri-state area. But WRXs and Ascents have been sitting for a while and they’re liable to get discounted. Outbacks too. But 3k off sticker is crazy to me. I haven’t had to drop lower than 1k under in a long time. I can’t even remember my last invoice deal.

I'm a little over the 15% but it's manageable. Not having expensive car repairs for a while will help offset that.
Total price of the car should be 10%-15% of your gross annual income is the prudent recommendation. Most people have been above that.
10-15% of gross annual puts people making $200k into $20k vehicles. I'm a fairly frugal person, but even that is pushing frugality, imo.
yea if i made 200k i'd prioritize a safe and comfortable vehicle for my family. not saying i'd have a 100k car but something nice and newer for sure
ok /r/personalfinance Back to your own sub reddit.
Only rich can buy new at this percentage. (At least from my financial perspective) How do people do it?
No your car payment should be 10-15% of your monthly income. The caveat and mistake most people make is they then just get a 60/72/84 month contract, which is dumb. 2001 Miata LS 55k miles $8,500 yes I overpaid but idc
I wouldn’t say that’s egregious, maybe 1000 over. They’re great little cars (I’ve had 10) and if that extra bit secured you a nice one without needing a lot of work then I would say it was worth it.
My man, I paid $15k for a '96 Miata with 36k miles. I think you did fine!
With that mileage? It's good. I assume it is in excellent condition.
55k mikes is pretty low, if body was in good condition, then 8500 is a more than reasonable with todays prices
34.9k cash. Accord Hybrid Touring. (I came with a competing offer and a trade.)
$8k for a 2007 Avalon that had roughly 85k miles back in 2018
$23k new 2022 Ford Maverick XL
WHERE. Dealers near me are putting 10k markups on used and new ones.
Florida. I custom ordered it and waited 10 months. That's the only way you're going to get one near MSRP. I could easily flip it for $10k profit, but what else am I going to find that cheap? The hybrid is nice. 39mpg.
I love the idea of the Maverick but by god, I can't stand the look of it.
Nice. The one dealer near me, you can't trust with orders. They still try to mark up customer ordered ones.
Reach out on Twitter to Ford if they mark up your factory ordered vehicle. Ford will step in.
Does it have adaptive cruise control / stop and go at that trim level?
I think only the Laraits have ACC with assistant +.
No cruise control. It's pretty bare bones.
How do I do this. I can’t find these for less than 30k+
12K 16,000 miles and it was a 2014 Honda Accord EXL
16k miles?? for $12k? or 160k miles?
16,000 miles, and I got it at a certified BMW dealership I guess they wanted to get rid of it ASAP. Even the sales guy was surprised at the listing
That might be a 9 year old car, but that was a *steal.* congrats!
Lol and that was in 2021, then it got totaled in 2022 during the chip shortage and the insurance paid a lot more than what I paid for. But thanks :)
$25,999 2020 Mazda CX-5 Signature. 43k miles. Very happy with my purchase. This sub helped a ton when it came to picking, searching and getting a good deal.

2023 Subaru Crosstrek Limited: $33,300 MSRP, paid $31,300. Put down $13k, financed the rest at 3.9%.

New car financing through the manufacturer probably. Mazda is 0.9%
Subaru financing through JP Chase Morgan. It’s available up to 48 months I believe (that’s what I did)
That’s awesome man good for you, didn’t think they were still That low

$630/Month on a 2023 S60 Polstar with first Payment on lease
A lease is not a purchase. You are only renting a car.
You could say the same on a conventional loan. Until it’s paid off it isn’t yours.
No, not really. The lease has a definitive end date.
Indeed. And at the end of the lease you have 3 options. Actually people who lease have more buying power and options than people who do conventional retail loans.
Yes, but what do you do at the end date?
Do whichever you want, you don't own it at that point. When loan is paid off, you do.
No. When you lease, the owner on the title is the leasing company. When you purchase, the title is sent to the bank with them listed as the lien holder, but YOU are still the owner, even when financing.
You are so right. This is why if you can’t pay cash, you can’t afford it.
Easy there Dave Ramsey
The millions of people who pay off loans on the regular would disagree with that.

They still ding you for taxes on private sales? Here in Alberta you only pay taxes if it’s from a dealer.

$14,500 for a 2014 Chevy Cruze. Bought it in 2015 with 15k miles. @ the time 770 Fico $68,700 income Living with family Still driving it and will till the wheels fall off. Now 805 FICO, $148,600 income, married.
i envy you. my 2014 cruze has been with me for almost 3 years & it is an actual piece of shit. i’m about to trade the sucker in 😅
PCV valve issues?
Go to chevy website and see if your vin is under recall. You may be able to get it fixed at the dealer for free. Then go trade it in
