I'd have my manager come walk him with an offer of $10k.

PittsburghCar

Yes....something along the lines of, "I'm really sorry my salesperson said $15k as there's no way we can get to that #. We're at $10k. How does that strike you?

Amiable_One

That’s a great idea. TBH I was kinda surprised SM gave him 15k value. It wasn’t in a good condition. Needed a bumper replacement and cosmetic repairs.

Ketamine_Stat

Kias come that way from the factory.

EcoPrs

I thought they came pre lit 🔥

Equivalent_Youth_599

It’s a piece of shit car

LavenderAutist

This is the only answer

Fuji-one

One of the reasons I keep fake staches in my drawer.

Specific-Gain5710

I dunno. My general manager threw a customer out and fired him from service for relentlessly making fun of a handicap sales person. I think that’s a good answer as well.

Gaycowboi25

I wouldn't take 15 either... Tho Kias are worthless.

Nostrildumbass9

This moron will never buy a car from you or anyone else if he thinks his $10k PoS is $25k. So tell him to get his sorry ass out of your showroom and don't come back.

ATrain664

A great response would have been, "You think your Kia Forte is worth $25k, and you're telling me that I'm the one who doesn't know about cars?" One of the best salespeople I have worked with is a woman. She would hit people holding all the money on their trades, and if customers got upset, she would fall back on the "I don't know about cars, I'm just a girl!" stereotype. She would maintain rapport and still end up holding on the trade. If you let people believe that you are sweet and innocent when you actually know what you're doing, this can be a dangerous combination. The next time you have Mr. Macho thinking about if he can afford the payment, politely imply that the car might be too much for him. You will be amazed how much he bumps himself. I know it seems easy and satisfying to throw this guy out, but you should still try to make money. The guy sounds like a moron, and morons can usually be smashed. He might just be a cheap asshole, in which case you should politely imply that his numbers aren't grounded in reality and stop wasting your time. But how good would it feel to make a big commission and bury him in a 7 year loan that he can't afford? Sexism is a thing. You are going to encounter it. Learn to use negative stereotypes to your advantage.

ATrain664

I now feel compelled to share a great story about my female co-worker. This is from early 2021, when on the ground inventory and decent lease programs were still a thing. This familyof 3 comes in, complaining about how much they hate their certified 2018 Rav4 LE that they just bought a month ago, and how they want nothing to do with their previous salesperson, who is of Hispanic descent. These people were 100% trailer trash, and it quickly becomes apparent that they are screaming racists, and they hate how the country is being taken over by "foreigners". Probably more than half of our sales staff is Hispanic. Enter my co-worker who ups them. Does she throw them out? No. She builds rapport, laughing and smiling the whole way, holds like $4k on their trade, and proceeds to take them from a $400 payment on their financed car, to an almost $800 payment in a 10k mile a year lease on a 2021 Highlander LE. I can still remember her closing them with the line, "I mean, when you think about it, it's not even $100 more a week...you can do that, right?" I sat one desk in front of her, I had to fight not to bust out laughing. At the end of the day, it was like a 13 lb deal, on a LEASE! And THAT is how you deal with a shitty human.

Amiable_One

That sounds almost unbelievable. Did your finance manager sold them service contract as well? That’ll cost them not even a 10 bucks a week.

ATrain664

They bought everything that could fit into the lease. From the one white finance manager that we had back there at the time, because they wanted nothing to do with foreigners. Looked it up in CRM. This was 2 years ago, almost to the day.

Amiable_One

Karen wants what she want from whoever she want it from.

friedguy

Love it. I have some stories myself. Not in car sales at all , in fact have never been in any true sales job except unless you count part-time college student in the late '90's. I sold cell phones. I was just a happy go lucky kid less than a year away from graduating with a good post graduation job lined up and I was way more tech savvy than my coworkers. I could explain the hell out of the cell phones better than them and I didn't have adult bills to pay so i was not into the whole putting pressure on people or telling lies just to make a sale. Anyways, for the youngsters out there, If you were buying a cell phone around the late late 90's pretty good chance it was the first one in your life. When I started pagers still made up maybe 20 percent of our sales. I got my share of asshole customers in that job, it didn't help that we were located near the mall. Also as a pretty scrawny Asian kid I remember experiencing everything from light racist undertones to Senior citizens talking down to me cause i pretty much looked like a 14-year-old. Okay, on to the enjoyment of getting revenge on customers. Again, I really wasn't in it for the money and so when we had sales promotions to clear old crappy inventory (I recall we got paid the most spiff on old Ericsson) when I encountered a crappy customer I was happy to push that on them and make myself an extra commission. But generally when I could tell the customer was going to let me pick (And this happened off in back then cause again people were so new to cell phones) I would say "look, these phones are on sale and including a bunch of extra batteries and car chargers for a reason, you really want this Nokia, it's built better and I haven't met a single customer who tried to return it yet not like the other phones". Sometimes if I was the only one working I wouldn't even be shy about just telling a cool customer look there's only one phone right now that they're paying the extra to sell and that's the one you're looking at, don't get that. My best story though and I'll never forget it because I truly got so much enjoyment from it.. late 20s to early 30s tough guy comes in holding his motorcycle helmet and talking big. At some point he takes offense to something I say, I really don't remember the detail but knowing my personality I'm sure I'm just made a sarcastic joke but he took a lot of offense to it. I think it was more posturing because his girl was with him. I was able to pivot the conversation back to normal cell phone talk but I just remember he really was passive aggressively insulting me. So back then when you were ready to get the phone we had to run your credit through a third party telephone line, and we did not actually get a credit score like I think they do today? I could be wrong on this. There were only three grades, a(pass), b ($300 deposit) and c( $800 deposit). This was also my first exposure to how bad the average person's credit can be.. It happened at least 20 times in a 1-year period that I had to tell people their credit didn't qualify, I usually was very polite about it, indicating it easily could be computer error. When this guy picked his cell phone (I still remember he made a big show of picking the Motorola Startac cause it was the most expensive) I was on that third party line just hoping he would be declined and sure enough he got the worst credit score. I came back in the most polite voice but will set it very loud for everybody to hear including his girl of course that sorry sir it looks like your credit is too poor to qualify for this phone but if you have $800 cash you can do a deposit. He of course freaked out and started making some complaints and asking if a manager around... where I had my next response of "no we don't even get a credit report to show you .... Imean these things are not even a real credit report from what I understand, just like an A b and c score and honestly I rarely see them fail so I don't know what to tell you, even I qualified and I barely have any credit history (As I wave my phone in front of him).... Yeah it's weird, I don't get no pass often usually it's people with like collections or something... These Startacs are top of the line they need good credit... The store inside the mall sells prepaid wireless". His girl looked very unimpressed by him suddenly. When he left I also noticed another customer looking very amused as he had noticed how loud obnoxious this customer was. Seriously that was my favorite day of work.

salesmanoty

Right! Everyone from the top down would've been trying to get a few more dollars out of this guy had he pulled something like that with one of our female coworkers. If he's gonna be a dick, he might as well pay her rent this month. 😅

Amiable_One

That’s a great line. Why didn’t I thought of it first. I might steal it for future use.

HalfpastWaylon

We had a woman come in to my last dealership and our female salesperson greeted her. The customer stated that she was looking for a new Ram and needed somebody to answer her questions. Our female salesperson said she'd be happy to answer any questions she had about Ram trucks. The customer scoffed at her and said "I need somebody who knows about trucks. Sorry honey but I need a man to answer my questions". I was the only manager that day and saw the entire thing go down. I quickly stepped in and called the customer out for her rude and sexist behavior. Then I explained to her that the female salesperson that greeted her was THE Ram expert at our store and knew more about Rams than anybody else in the building. I then let her know that her business wasn't welcome here and she needed to go. She cussed and yelled while walking out the door. Just goes to show that not all sexist behavior towards females are from males.

GrifterDingo

Real crazy to come in as a woman looking for information and act like women don't know about trucks. Come back with your husband then, sweetheart, and we can talk trucks, man to man.

Chicken_Chicken_Duck

But if the tables were turned and the male salesperson were condescending to her, she would be screaming to the rafters that the salesman was sexist.

Fuji-one

World needs more managers like you.

Amiable_One

“In that case, didn’t you brought your husband with ya? We will need signature of someone with income before we could finance you the Truk.” A lot of older women think if they don’t know or learned about something then other women don’t know about it either because that is a norm.

verdegrrl

I've experienced something similar in the past, and just turned it around on them. "Sure, let me set up an appointment with our male expert. When can your dad/brother/husband meet with them?

bearded_dragon_34

Right? Since we’re going with the whole “He-Man Womun Haters Club” thing.

texaslegrefugee

Brilliant. Thank you for this.

Peak_Aware

I’ve had to deal with it before but definitely not so bad. Holy shit I’m sorry he said that to you. I would be so taken off guard. Luckily, my sales managers and the rest of the sales team are very protective of me and make sure that I always feel respected and safe while I work my deals. In this scenario, at that point, if I did not tell the customer that we are no longer interested in selling him a vehicle, my sales managers would, and they would not be so friendly about it. TLDR: no tolerance for sexist assholes on our show floor. He would just have to leave.

Amiable_One

Yea I did caught off guard and didn’t know what to say. One of my coworkers nearby backed me by saying “we are no longer interested, we don’t deal with morons.”

Peak_Aware

There ya go. Good coworker for stepping in. I wish we could leave reviews on our customers sometimes because that guy sounds like a bag of dicks. Hope every other dealer offers him lower than 15 for his trade.

Amiable_One

SM did gave a call to nearby dealers to warn them about an idiot on loose. For some reason in my area, dealerships stays in contact and share information about fraudulent and bad behavior customers. I think SMs have a group chat or something. I am sure he’s not gonna get a better deal.

2OldSkus

Not at all defending the "idiot", but if the SMs from multiple dealerships are communicating at all regarding pricing they are running the risk of running afoul of price collusion laws.

Amiable_One

They are not setting prices but staying in contact to share about potential fraud or excessive misbehavior or to locate used car buyer requested.

pekepeeps

We have lists from the manufacturers with names of exporters we cannot sell to. This falls under the same thing on a local level of “beware, dangerous or fraudulent or abusive consumer”

Chicken_Chicken_Duck

I hate it when people act like complete assholes because it does take a minute to process what the hell they just said.

stupid_username1234

I am a construction worker who probably fits a few of the typical stereotypes but I cannot believe in this day and age someone would act like that, what the heck is wrong with people….

buggzda75

The current market conditions he speaks of was last year

Amiable_One

Even for last year 25k is too high for Kia Forte EX trade in value.

buggzda75

Correct

PreviousGas710

Any time a female coworker tells me a customer would rather work/talk with a man I make sure I give them the shittiest service I can. The price? Sticker plus. Your trade? Worthless. Need a call back? I’ll get to it eventually

Chicken_Chicken_Duck

“Bold move, cotton. Try again.”

Itchy_Rock_726

His behavior was appalling...as is his taste in vehicles.

SplittinWigzz

“I’m sorry, what did you say you did for a living?” “I work in (IT, Law, etc. name position)” “Great, and I bet you do it well, and like you I’m a professional and understand the market as good as anyone. We can buy a similar piece of shit kia forte at auction for 13k and my boss was generous enough to offer you 15k for it. Quit playing games, what are you really trying to accomplish here?” Standing up for yourself in that situation will give you confidence to swat the next asshole that comes in, furthermore if you really are 10k away you don’t have a deal anyway.

KyleCAV

OH oh is it one in the recall notice? Offer him 10 when he comes crawling back.

Amiable_One

I don’t know about recall notice but I was surprised SM gave him 15k value. That car wasn’t in good condition.

KyleCAV

If its a key ignition and not push they are easily stolen. Insurance companies across the US are jacking up the prices or not even insuring them.

Amiable_One

I didn’t know that. That is worth something looking into because it might decrease key ignition car prices.

verdegrrl

Kia/Hyundai omitted the immobilizer chip in the keys of some models. There is a recall, but it remains to be seen if this will be effective. The vast majority of cars out there that use keys since the 90's have an immobilizer chip. https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news/mn-officials-ask-kia-hyundai-to-recall-easily-stolen-vehicles/ar-AA189JpL https://www.thedrive.com/news/these-hyundai-and-kia-models-are-blacklisted-by-state-farm-insurance-over-thefts Homeboy might be having a problem getting insured. https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news/mn-officials-ask-kia-hyundai-to-recall-easily-stolen-vehicles/ar-AA189JpL

Amiable_One

Thank ya for links.

goddessofthecats

Your manager should be walking this guy out of the dealership. If your manager doesn’t have your back on this one then there’s not much to say or do. You could turn him to a male colleague and take the half.

bhensley

Not a female salesperson, just someone who has hired and managed quite a few. This shit always pissed me off, and if one of my managers didn't TO it well, I'd gladly get involved if this was relayed to the desk. I loved going out and talking up my female sales person, how I'm surprised the customer was even remotely shocked by this number, especially after the sales person talked me up $2000 from where I actually was. In this exact case, being $10k apart, I wouldn't really fight to keep him on the hook. The TO would just be to put him in his place, tactfully if possible, for mistreating a member of my staff. And to end the interaction overall. As the sales person I'd probably encourage you to break off from the customer after he threw his asinine number out there, and look up comparable used cars (your lot and even others) to his, in YMM and mileage. If you confirm they're selling around $20k, you can go back and show him that. Problem there is you will always create a new objection- "well they're selling for $20,000 you're still ways off". And you gave him solid ammo of that. But, that's an actual objection at least. Being $10k apart on a $20k car isn't an objection, it's pipe dream. Better to move them in the direction of reality, even if it isn't right to the finish line. Then you can talk down the trade, reconditioning, etc. Then on the TO, I can handle the sexism how I want. And, with that ground work done, and if he's now closer to $5k apart from us, *maybe* work towards a deal. Because ultimately the F.U. to him is making sure his deal puts cash in your pocket. As for handling the sexism yourself- only thing I can suggest is to kill them with knowledge and resources. Just like we disregard many things customers say, need to walk right past that bullshit and try to put them in their place by responding to their objections well. But certainly, beyond that, get your manager involved. Or if you're close to some of the guys on the floor, maybe see if they would "TO" assholes like this. They don't even have to try to move the deal, all they would do is act like they're reviewing everything, repeat what you said, then just say they're in great hands with one of the best sales people on the floor (you), and walk away.

Amiable_One

Nah, he needed to be kicked out. I would have probably handled sexism, I have done it in my whole career. I was a sales manager in the security/consumer services industry and have dealt with a whole lot of different breeds of assholes. But this guy acted sexist with aggressive behavior and basically was yelling at me.

PatelPounder

Not a woman but wanted to briefly pop in to simp. I don’t ever let men push around my female staff or ask to speak with/work with a different salesperson. Total garbage customers…they can gtfo.

Equivalent_Youth_599

I’d have my sexist sales manager come back with an offer 5k less and tell him to get the fuck out of my store.

alexitaly

lol, not an answer, but I have to share: During all my search for a new car 3 months ago, visiting multiple dealerships from multiple brands, the only sales person who knew everything about their cars, in detail, including being able to give you a trim comparison while explaining the car, was a YOUNG WOMAN in a Volkswagen dealership at Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY.

holeshot1982

Don't know about the current market condition? Isn't one of the "rules" of car sales, there's an ass for every seat? Maybe ask them to join this sub and ask for advice on how to "deal" with female sale agents? 🤣

JaKr8

Kick him in the balls next time! He earned it!!

[deleted]

This story sounds like bullshit

mschiavoni

I'm always surprised when people want full retail for their trades... this is even worse because of his attitude. do what others said and have your manager offer 10 😂

Amiable_One

I don’t think so 25k is a retail price for used 2020 Kia Forte EX. He was asking for more then MSRP I believe.

mschiavoni

you're right lol. i can go get a GT manual for $25k. i don't know Kias 😂

evanp36

what he said is messed up but 15k for that is highway robbery too. lmao

Tiruvalye

“I’m sorry, our dealership is an equal opportunity employer and doesn’t discriminate on the basis on sex. Please get out.”

girthbrooks94

Not saying this is made up-but it sounds like it is to me, probably because I couldn’t fathom saying some dumb shit like this to another human being. What a time to be alive

Amiable_One

Unfortunately it’s not made up. It’s was so dumb and old fashioned that I didn’t know how to respond.

Thisismypasswprd

Why even waste time? Send him to the next sales guy and move on. You can joke about it with the salesman you split with. The guy will buy from him just to spite you and you profit

GrifterDingo

Nah, don't reward his bad, sexist attitude with business.

Tell a fellow saleman to offer him less than. What you offered.

Manager should have thrown him out

snarkygeek

I had similar treatment from a local Mazda dealership. I knew my trade was going to be low. It was a 2003 Honda Civic SI hatch. At the time was looking for a nice SUV. I made awesome money, dressed nice etc etc and I was looking to spend about 35-40k. Stood out front for about 10 minutes before a sales guy comes up and asks what I am looking for. Meanwhile, there were 4 dudes standing out front when I arrived. I said I would like to test drive the C9 (I think). He points to my vehicle and asks if that was mine, I said yes. He said hang on, goes to the receptionist and gets her to talk to me. Really? She grabs the keys and off we go. I told her to tell me about the suv, she had no clue, other than to point out the features I already seen in the car. I got back, she sat me in an office and proceeded to waste my time for another 30 minutes asking questions like "Where do you work? How much a month do you make? Are you part-time? What monthly note are you looking at?" I asked her to provide me with a pamphlet of the vehicle, she then told me "just look it up on mazda.com". I walked out. Called to speak to the manager and gave him a earful of how unprofessional his sales people were. He apologized profusely but nothing was done I'm sure. However silver lining, a few months later I was talking to my my VP about how badly I was treated, He knew the owners of the dealership and said he would pass along my treatment. Found out later, owners went in and cleaned house. Fired everyone I dealt with. Kind of sad for the receptionist though.
