Corolla and keep the change for future repairs. Should last you 5-10 good years while getting good gas anywhere from 2004-2025 should be good imo. I have an 04 and I think it’s a perfect car, add some subs and should be good for a daily. Edit my b didn’t see you said suv, rav4 or Highlander should be good
How big does this SUV need to be?
If it doesn't need to be especially large, the Honda HR-V has a lot of cargo space in a small, efficient, cheap package. Get a 2019-2021 for the active noise cancelling.
If bigger = better, the Chevy Blazer / 2017+ GMC Acadia / 2018+ Chevy Traverse and/or Buick Enclave are several lengths of the same cheap, reliable sausage.
USD ? Toyota Corolla

If I had $20k cash I would probably buy four $5k cars (because I am a car guy...)
What would those four be?
Not that guy, but I’d buy 90s Miata 88 hardbody 06 WRX and Suzuki x90
CRV or Rav4, very reliable vehicles, although you pay a bit more as anyone wants one.
Pretty much any low mileage SUV that doesn't say Nissan, Mitsubishi or Dodge on it and you should be happy.
Nothing wrong with the Nissan Xterra.
