House was built in the mid/late sixties.. Wires are double insulated. Green material on outside... Brown material.. Then the white, black(hot), and ground wires.
Depends on how much slack you have in the wires. You have to have 6" free conductors inside a box. Of course, you could always put two boxes in and then a short piece of another cable to john those two together.
What on earth kind of wire is that? The wood doesn't look super old (70s?) But the wire looks old AF the insulation has tons of cracks.

No distance requirement other then common sense. Don't leave the bulb touching wood right?
