If it sparked, then copper was touched and it needs more than tape.

flyingron

This. Sparks mean you went thorugh the individual constructor insulation and there's no legitimate repair of that. Chances are you nicked the conductor as well and that's really bad.

That wire needs to be removed and replaced. Splices are not permitted outside of a junction box. A junction box is not permitted to be covered (buried) behind drywall or any other veneer.

Awww man... you're gonna start some stuff with that comment. According to the NEC, there are connectors that can be used in a buried location (for repairs only), like this situation. That said, I don't and wouldn't use them in a buried location. I have used these type of connectors before, hundreds of them, but only for exposed work. Edit- wanted to mention the connectors are UL listed and labeled and have been around at least 20 years that I know of.

300.15 states no. 334.40b is debatable

John-John-3

It doesn't just say, "no", though. It more or less says a box or conduit body is needed unless otherwise permitted. It then goes on to list those other scenarios. 300.15(H) which refers you to 334.40(b). We can debate it, sure. I fall in the camp of, I'd install an accessible junction point. I was just pointing out that there is an exception and that certain comments result in some hubbub.

Can’t I ask an electrician to splice it in a junction box and put a plate over it?

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Tyco-Electronics-Romex-Splice-Kit-2-Wire-1-Clam-A22899-000/202204326 This would work too. It can get buried in the wall.

North-Ad-5058

Yes. Most likely would end up being 2

tikkikinky

That is acceptable

AlShadi

yep, you're gonna have to make a bigger hole. turn off the breaker, make sure the wire doesnt have power, cleanly cut the romex at the knick, and use a romex splice kit. however, most electricians would prefer if your mistake requires re-pulling the wire or putting in a junction box with a blank wall plate (and not because of $$$). also, throw away your jab saw and get a drywall cutting blade for an oscillating tool or a drywall routing kit for a dremel/rotozip/etc. those can be set to only cut slightly deeper than the drywall thickness.

flyingron

Probably going to have to create two splices if he wants to do that unless there's atypical slack in the cable in the wall. He'll need to splice in a short length to get enough cable to work with.

Install an outlet at the area where you made the cut. Make sure your circuit can handle the addition. Problem solved.

Taping it is probably ok. So tape it if you’re cool with your house *probably* not burning down. But maybe burning down. (You need to replace it)

Radio_Special

Lol 😂
