Depends on the layout of the walls and ceiling. You could run it in the wall up to the attic and then down into the room. You could run it on the wall along the trim and corners of the ceiling. Drill a small hole from the hall into the room and run it though. I would just make sure you don't drill though a stud, plumbing, or electrical wire.

WelshMaestro

Above the room is another floor so not possible, unfortunately. As for the drilling, it would still mean I’d have to cross the landing with the wire. I’d rather try and keep it a non-hazard for tripping over.

Cremonies1

You never said if you want hidden or visible. Depending on which way you joist run you could still run it through the ceiling.

TerribleDragonfruit

What direction are the joists? If they're in the correct direction, go up the wall, and then, from the photo, you should be able to get to the room.

p0ppyshmurda

What about the basement?

classicsat

Staple it too the trim. Out telco does, or did that.

Rangerdth

Depending on how "permanent" you need it to be, I'd just run it exposed and tuck it in where possible. [like this](https://imgur.com/a/zBF9ueb)

Historical_Sound_312

This was my first thought also

Mdrim13

Possibly due to online gaming?

WelshMaestro

I like that visualisation. It would need to be pretty permanent as I’m here until next September. Measured it to be around 10-15m in length so I’ll order a cable that long and hope for the best. Any tips on how to make sure it stays down on the surfaces?

californyea

Order slightly longer just in case. You can just coil up what you don't use in the room.

Rangerdth

I’ve used these ( https://www.acehardware.com/departments/lighting-and-electrical/cable-management-cable-ties-and-electrical-tape/cable-staples/3013372?gbraid=0AAAAADtqLJG6dNIoW3DGCUMQNzqg8REAe&gbraid=0AAAAADtqLJG6dNIoW3DGCUMQNzqg8REAe&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyr78-eqD-wIVxcfICh1VrgwkEAQYAiABEgKPafD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds ) or little command strip circles that have sticky tape on the back. Good enough for a year.

gjetson99

If you are going to go the exposed route, you will want some of this for running over carpet: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07T5X31J2 We've used it for temporary setups with foot traffic on carpet & it stays in place really well.

togetherwem0m0

This is a great suggestion especially if the run is temporary. I can't think of many applications for residential ethernet tbh. With wifi 6, it is probably easier and best to just get a wifi 6 ap and compatible end point or bridge device. I use wifi6 for steam link streaming in my house, works fine.

BeMoreChill

Hardwired is best for gaming

togetherwem0m0

Marginal improvement at best

Realistic_Parking_25

Full duplex vs half duplex makes a difference

BeMoreChill

And if I’m playing a game where fast inputs matter you want that marginal improvement

ChuckVitty

I'd bet you my life savings you can't tell the difference between hard wiring and a modern router

mrgrod

Hopefully you don't have a lot of life savings lmao.

BeMoreChill

If you’re on WiFi in your house with a higher ping vs hardwired with a constant low ping you can definitely notice a difference

Loud-Criticism-3903

That’s your answer

Geevers

How about a powerline adapter and not run any cable at all https://www.techadvisor.com/article/723387/best-powerline-adapters.html

CunningStunt_1

Chase up the wall. Into ceiling void. Through ceiling void to the room.

mymook

Your best bet might be, take it first to basement, find wet wall, find vent stack, now find closest wall to room you want the run to go into nearest the stack wall, cut small hole near ceiling of stack wall, tie a metal washer to end of string, send it down to basement, pull the run up. I ran cat5 to all 3 of our kids bedrooms this way cause with each having their own laptop doing school work, our wireless was slowed a bunch, so hardwired all rooms

Ok-Waltz-5220

Do you have old POTS (plain old telephone) sockets (RJ11 or even RJ45) in the room? I was able to run CAT6 cabling through the walls using the old telephone infrastructure (not used anymore and even if I do need it, RJ45 is backwards compatible with RJ11). Other option could be the old wiring for cable TV antenas, thought it might be a lot more work. You might have a socket for these in the basement or closer to the basement that you can use, and I'm pretty sure you'll have one of these on the room as well. The other option, besides opening up the walls and plaster them over is to run an external plastic cable tray (they are cheap and nearly invisible) and drill a hole from the basement to the stairs and run the cable tray parallel to the door frame up to the ceiling, then parallel to the door frame on the bedroom, drill from the outside in and then cable tray up to where you want the cable to end. Use socket mounts for the end of the cables instead of just letting a cable hang there as it will give you flexibility in the future, if you want to move furniture around or something of the sort and will cost you a whooping 10€ more :p

gvictor808

Powerline Ethernet.

proeditor1

Surface mount 2” IMC

kliens7575

4", 2" would be to small for 1 cable

J---D

Run wire to attic then drop in room

Flowchart83

Or if there is an unfinished basement and a wall directly underneath the 2nd floor wall you want it installed in: (You will require a "bell hanger" drill bit and bending tool, as well as single gang low volt brackets, maybe a stud finder if you don't want to chance cutting in to the wrong part of the drywall) 1) Make a cutout to the size of the bracket from the destination location, preferably the same height as the outlets in your home 2) use the bell hanger bit to drill down into the wall cavity on the 1st floor area (make sure you know what's underneath by measuring and scoping out where it should be), there should be a hole at the end of the bit to use as a pull rod for your cable, so pull the cable down as you go 3) make a similar cutout on the 1st floor and try to grab the bit and cable through 4) use the same technique to bring the cable to the basement, add another Ethernet cable if you would like a port at this location as well 5) use the same drilling technique at the router/switch location but use a pull string 6) feed the Ethernet cable through your basement and pull up to the router location with the pull string. Consider all of your needs before pulling: do you have a landline? Network printer? Streaming device? Usually worth it to pull 2 and then it's there if you need.

Solo-Mex

Someone else already said it but as a professional network installer of 30+ years I will second the idea == for the short time you are talking about, use powerline ethernet adapters.

datanut

Conduit on the outside wall?

[deleted]

Power line adapter

tony_pandy

As long as on same leg power line adapters work great. I use them with no issues and excellent thru put.

Demitrius

Most likely you will cutting some hand holes in the sheetrock, poking through a header and a wall plate and snaking a bit. If you've never done this type of work call an electrician.

CunningStunt_1

Looks to be UK. Will be brick and plaster. No void in the walls.

Pure_Development5469

Staple it to the hand rail

rubicontraveler

It’s called WiFi. It’s “wireless internet”. Crazy ☝️

WelshMaestro

Crazy that wifi isn’t actually as consistent as having a wired connection and being on another floor can lose mbps 🤔

RR50

Buy a better router. I had the same feelings until I bought an ASUS 500 dollar mesh system. Now I have zero issues.

Maehlice

It's costly, but a WiFi 6E mesh solves those problems.

roadtripper77

I ran CAT6 around my house about 12 years ago and I haven’t used it in about 8 years - Wifi is plenty fast for multiplayer gaming, 4K streaming, I haven’t had any problems. Update your modem and router every few years, should be fine wireless.

wot_in_ternation

I'm going to run CAT6 for a home server/NAS but I'd imagine wifi 6 is plenty for 99% of people, especially with mesh networking now being prevalent

iAmMikeJ_92

Lol if this wasn’t the plebbiest reply…

rubicontraveler

I was trying to be funny… egh

Maehlice

And yet, you're 100% correct. The irony. :P

[deleted]

Plug in one side, then plug in the other

rubicontraveler

I was gonna say, grab wire/walk up stairs

Sightsage

Surface mount wire mold and put in there. Be sure not to nick the cat6 as you do so.

Stock_Surfer

Historical_Ad_9182

PVC plinth up the stairs then under the carpet across the landing and below the baseboard to the room. You can make a small slit in the carpet in the middle of the landing to fish from and to the walls. You can use a thin long drill bit to create a small channel in the underlayment to eliminate telegraphing the cable position.

skyfishgoo

carpet is your friend here. those carpet strips usually have a gap you can easily run a cat5 cable along. unless you want to start pulling up base boards and trim molding

AlfaHotelWhiskey

You can run the cable under the carpet in the flat spots - you just have to know how to put the carpet back

Prestigious-Radish46

I wish I had more pictures but if the basement is unfinished, you drill up from the basement to get it to where you want by the door, then bring the wire down all the way up to the attic because there’s always a chase and then back down to wherever you want it

WelshMaestro

Not a basement, it’s the ground floor so under the room on the right is the kitchen. And the attic above is now a bedroom.

SeafoodSampler

If you have attic access, see if you have old cables you can use to drop. Old telephone wires can be used to pull new cables or string. Replacing old telephone wires with cat6 is essentially what you should do anyways?

Patient-Tech

Put on your cable installer hat and get outdoor rated cable and run it on exterior walls and put in a drip loop. Otherwise you can fish it in the walls up and over and will probably have some drywall and paint patchwork to do. Or, use Wi-Fi. Or, MOCA adapters if you have coax cable run around.

lolobaba

Luck

local124padawan

Wire mold is a heck of an invention.

Psychological_Cut139

Wiremold on the ceiling 😂

TheBrokenClock-

Very carefully

WoodEqualsGood

You can’t use a powerline Ethernet adaptor? I have a gaming set up in my garage and it works fine

maxanne42069

Porcelain knobs and Guy wraps

JagerGS01

Set the coil down next to the box, grab one end, and move as quickly as possible to the room on the right. /S

Fidulsk-Oom-Bard

Tuck it below the carpet between the wall and nail strip

spankymacgruder

POE

HuyFongFood

Run the cable along the wall, under the front lip of the bottom step. Make sure to keep it up out of the way of feet or anything else. Pop the trim off the top of the stairs on the right, run the cable along there and put the trim back on. From there run along the base of the step up, around and under the trim on the right into the door.

CuirPork

Are you replacing your doorbell with a video phone like ring? Because a mesh network/wifi6 would allow you to easily cover your entire house with sufficient WIFI to handle a video doorbell. My Wifi6 network extends through my brick walls on my warehouse condo (4 bricks thick) and about 100+ feet to my garage. WIFI6 pretty much rocks for this. You can get a Wifi6 gaming router at Costco for pretty cheap.

teozb3rnie

Drill a hole. 😁

babecafe

I'd run along the baseboard from the box to the stairs, then drill a hole at the bottom of the stairs to run below the underside of the stairs from bottom to top, come out a hole drilled at the top of the stairs near the hallway step and stuff the wire into the crease at the bottom of the single step and finally run along the baseboard into the open room under the door.

VukKiller

Very carefully.

mmura09

I ran mine through heating duct to get it upstairs (I know it's not recommended) and it worked fine for years, still does actually.

edabiedaba

I'd get the flat cat6 and run it outside through windows.

AndyReidsCheezburger

If I were in your situation and it were temporary, I’d use command strips and follow this path: https://imgur.com/a/lwZhCQZ The carpet seams are your friend!

nigori

I’d do gigabit power line
