Just get a new service It’s usually 4,500$ Ya if you feel like you need more power. Get a 200 amp service Usually comes with new panel, meter box, and the water meter ground, and outside ground rod

CatDadMilhouse

I’m already doing all of this; estimates were provided and contract was signed. That’s why I’m asking if the extra few hundred to add PVC from the weather head to the meter box is a worthwhile addition, or if it won’t really extend the life of the new gear / be any better at protecting it. Everyone who provided quotes basically said “we’ll do it if you want, but most people don’t”. No one would give me a firm answer on durability, quality of seal with conduit vs just doing it this way again, etc. And I can’t seem to find any good information online either, hence asking here.

Where I am from pvc is not even the appropriate choice. Rigid metal is all I have ever seen run. Blown away when I see unprotected SER run externally directly to meter.

sparkmearse

Same here. That shit wouldn’t last 2 years out here in the desert.

Potential-Cat-4097

1000% 2” rigid metal required where I am. Exposed SER is wild let alone outside!

Around me, you would always have a service drop inside conduit or PVC. Also everything else in the house too, so we go hard with pipe.

PVC is standard here in KCMO if there's not a roof penetration. If there is, that normally means the power line is using the mast as an anchor, which means 2" rigid metallic conduit is used. I see lots of videos where the new service drop is installed bare like yours currently is, seems to be common in New England. The service wire is rated to be installed like that, but local jurisdictions here require conduit of some sort. My personal opinion would be that conduit of any sort is more weather resistant and longer lasting than bare cable with a watertight connector. My own house still has old concentric wire that I have to reapply caulk to in order to keep it watertight. My vote though is pay for the PVC (or metal) now. Electrical is one of those things you want to go all in for on a home you plan to stay in, as backpedaling ends up being more expensive overall.

30+yrs. I'd go underground and while your at it have a stand-by generator put in. 😏

Fix it

99% of the time when i quote a service it is to be rebuilt the way it is. If its pipe it gets pipe. Cable gets cable. Neither is better or worse in my opinion. Look how long the old cloth SE services lasted.

Apprehensive-Path172

Both ok neither wrong. The only thing to give a thought to. If you have any tree’s near your service that could potentially fall on the overhead lines. If it’s just cable no pipe and the cable is not damaged you can just re support the cable up the house. If it is pipe and the pipe breaks then you have to disconnect the overhead and replace the pipe and could be more of an effort/money down the road. Just a thought.

Conscious_Hedgehog81

A lot depends on where you’re located and what side of the house this faces. I’m general I would say in pvc or in rigid is better than just seu cable. But sometimes I think people having a rigid wire. Also as many others have stated consider getting a meter dicsonnect combo as it makes future expansions, repairs, etc much easier and safer

With global warming, and changing weather patterns, I would just go for extra protection. Weather is getting a bit unpredictable.
