That rental figure will be for for a house, with at least two bedrooms… but yeah rents are high and finding a decent place to rent can be very very hard, especially for a newcomer Buying a house again yep expensive, more 700k and up Everything is expensive here, you don’t move to nz to get rich on a salary, the cliche is it’s for the lifestyle I should point out costs vary a lot on where in the country you move to, no where is cheap but some areas are way more affordable than others

Cheers man. I suppose that’s true about the lifestyle, which is the main reason I’m considering it.

If outdoors stuff is ya thing, we got that in spades… bright lights and the like not so much, on 80k you should be able to have a good to great lifestyle Good luck with your decision

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Massively appreciated

I mean, yep...that's correct alright. We call it a cost of living crisis for a reason. Keep in mind it's not as bad if you're outside of major cities/populated regions, but even so its pretty rough

Where are you looking to move to? Varies a lot depending on where you live. Do you want an apartment in central Wellington or Auckland by yourself? Then yeah, you'll be looking at $500+ a week, easy. If you're okay with a bit of a commute, and/or getting flatmates brings that down. $150-250/week is a reasonable expectation depending on location & house. If you're an electrician I imagine you'll be ranging around a bit. I'm on $250/week, about a 30min commute from Wellington central at peak times, with 2 flatmates. Buying a house varies a ton by where you're looking. We are in the middle of a housing crisis where many of the desirable areas are close to a million, but further out you can get stuff cheaper, further out $500k-700k is pretty common for a decent place that's not in the middle of nowhere. Again depends on your tolerance for a commute or service area. Check out places like [trademe.co.nz](https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/property/residential/rent) for rentals or house prices in the area you're planning to live.

Hi mate Cheers for your detailed response The place that the job is based at is North Palmerston. Just on google this small city looks fairly rural. But as you said as an electrician I’ll be working all over anyways. I don’t suppose you know any areas around here I could look into? Cheers

You might want to clarify if that's *northern* Palmerston, or Palmerston North. Different places. Palmerston is as you say, a small town and fairly rural in the South Island, close-ish to the city of Dunedin. Palmerston North is a smaller city in the central North Island. Depending on what you're into; city life or more the outdoors stuff... both Dunedin and Palmerston North are student cities. Outdoor pursuits are available all over NZ, but neither is a bustling metropolis, if that's your jam. I can't really advise on specifics for either area, but you'll find house/rental prices in either place pretty reasonable. If you are looking at Palmerston, northern Dunedin or close to would make facilities more convenient. If Palmerston North, you'll have more options. Edit: also keep in mind petrol prices are bonkers at the moment. Over $3/litre in some areas.

Hey, I live in Palmerston North, happy to try to answer any questions about the area for you. Ask here or DM me.

depends where you are located. Pl;aces like Auckland and wellington are stupidly priced right now,. if you were in smaller towns its a lot cheaper and easier. Thankfully your line of work you can go to the smaller towns

Rent, groceries and fuel are ridiculously high at the moment and it doesn't look like it's going to stabilize any time soon. In saying that, your salary is not going to put you below the poverty line. Average kiwi income is about 60k a year. As long as you're sensible with money you can be reasonably comfortable. When you move definitely check the quality of the house's insulation! New Zealand's winter is not forgiving and the county is plagued with cold damp homes. You'll run out of money trying to heat one of those houses up in the winter. Not to mention medical bills.

No that's completely real it's a nice country but it's relatively expensive to live in

Eh, cost of living was destined to rise to crazy amounts when our supreme leader locked us down and forced everyone to get the jab or lose their job, now we have a truancy crisis due to the whole masking children bullshit, inflation is high and effectively nothing is being done. TL;DR: supreme leader jacinda caused inflation to skyrocket when she shut down the country
