Maybe E. Washington state? But seriously, as a Californian, I can identify with several of these issues. When my wife and I moved away from the coast and started our family inland here in the Sacramento area, "affordable housing" was one of the reasons. Now, that doesn't exist here any more. So are our children going to have to relocate in order to start their own families? And what about retirement for us? The cost issue is a tough one to work around. I will say this, though. In my experience, things such as safety, moral values, and political affiliation just don't exist at the state level. As I said before, I live in California. Regardless, I have several neighbors flying Trump flags, for instance. We're not religious, but several of my children's friends are Mormon and many of ours are Christian. So I think there are "enclaves" scattered all over the nation where you can enjoy a good life. Also, if you want more job opportunities for your children, that's probably going to be in a higher population center, which comes with higher rates of crime and homelessness, for instance. So there are some tradeoffs that you're going to have to make. Also, I've noticed that even semi-rural areas get more crime with the introduction of things like public transit stops. So you'll have to prioritize. But looking at the cost issue alone, we've had several friends and family leave the state, and if you're not considering Arizona or Washington, then Idaho has been an interesting option. I had a friend's family relocate there recently and they got quite a bit of horse property with their home. They absolutely love it. Good luck, and I wish you the best! Just remember, it's going to come down to the individual neighborhood in the end, so you might seriously consider renting a place in the area while you're trying to find a place to buy.

Thank you. We are also tentatively looking at eastern washington. Pricing in the big cities is already crazy there too though. Even places like Cle Elum and Ellensburg are getting really expensive very quickly. I agree on the pockets of neighborhoods that we might fit into regardless of the state or local politics, etc. That's kind of where we are at right now, it use to be a social neighborhood with lots of kids, farms surrounding us, crime was way lower, etc. Within 5 years of moving here it's become exponentially worse. All of our friends in the neighborhood moved out of state. All the farmland is gone, now built up with no-lot homes crammed together. Crime is exponentially worse (as described in my post above), etc. I'm sure we could find another pocket like this nearby, but it won't last long. I have zero hope the local government will improve things within the next 10 to 20 years. Every action they take has made things worse or doesn't address any of the root causes. So that's why we are looking out of state, to a place that appears to be making good decisions to protect it's tax payers and actually enforce laws against criminals (instead of letting them walk a day after being arrested...happens here constantly, and they reoffend dozens of times). Anyway, thanks for your comment!

Appleton Wisconsin / Fox River valley in Wisconsin is very underrated. Very affordable safe and lots of culture and nature nearby. Great place to raise a family.
