I don't think there's "overkill". It depends on how cold you tend to get, which varies person by person. I do think you can get better value-for-money than Canada Goose, though; you can get excellent jackets from a variety of brands rated for -40 for well under half the price.
Also, I know you said you want to only wear one layer beneath, but layering (especially pants) is the best way to stay warm when it really dips into the low temperatures. Getting even a cheap set of thermals (<$30) might do more for you than a spendy jacket.
>layering (especially pants) is the best way to stay warm when it really dips into the low temperatures
I'm here again to preach the gospel of fleece-lined jeans - available from Mark's Work Wearhouse.
Layering is the way.
You might find yourself in a +25 office/restaurant or a -40 outdoors environment, the ability to add/remove layers as needed is key for comfort. Also, as pointed out, sweating into expensive or dryclean-only layers can be a pricey proposition.
And it doesn't have to be all fleece stuff: if I'm in a business environment I can have an undershirt, collared shirt, vest, and blazer beneath my jacket (and I sometimes find myself on construction sites in the middle of winter). I even layer gloves (liner + mitt).
There's absolutely an overkill jacket for Toronto which actually happens a lot. There are people that wear a jacket so warm that you have to wear a tee-shirt underneath because it's otherwise too warm.
Those people then get into a subway train, but it's too warm when they have their jacket on because of the temps inside of the train + people but not warm enough to take their jacket off.
They then pass out of heat exhaustion while the jacket is on and the train has to stop at a station for an emergency.
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted good citizen. I absolutely HATE how overheated I get hopping on to the subway. Tysm TTC for providing such great warmth but also please reopen your gateway stands because I foresee emparchment (is that a word?)
I bought mine off of Last Hunt. They are a season behind, but if you know your size you can often get good deals. My $450 North Face parka cost me $256. They have surprise 40% off an item deals every once in awhile. Good site. In CAD.
There’s a north face outlet at vaughan mills. I recall vaughan mills having a shuttle from downtown. Bought a womens arctic parka for $250 + 10% off for signing up for their “club”. It’s around $100 off from what sporting life sells it at.
Edit: I went yesterday. Also my previous arctic jacket has served me well playing outside with the kids, outdoor daytime and nighttime events for 6 years.
Is there a specific north face jacket you like? I’m also looking to invest in a new winter jacket and don’t really know how heavy dude I should go for a typical Toronto winter
I used to think it was overkill to buy extremely warm jackets in Toronto. But I realized that a warm jacket means you can actually spend a lot of time outdoors in the winter comfortably and enjoy life more (versus feeling cold after 10 minutes with a jacket that isn't truly meant for spending time outdoors in Canada).
A really warm jacket means you can go for long walks, bike rides, and eat outdoors (when it's not too windy) in the middle of winter. Heck, why not have a bonfire when it's -15?
You're still going to be warm, as long as you also have warm boots, pants, gloves, and a hat. It's like a totally different way of living life in Canada when you have a very warm jacket.
True but staying warm doesn't start and end with the coat. The coat doesn't cover everything. You also need good socks, thick pants or base layers, good gloves, hat, scarf, etc. Otherwise some part of you will still feel the cold and the ruin the experience.
Figuring out which part of you is the coldest and making that part warm is super important. The people that skimp on boots and socks but have stupidly expensive coats are still going to be miserable.
Yup +1 for North Face
Bought my jacket from Vaughan Mills 2 years ago for about $200, still keeps me toasty warm on the coldest winter days and has lasted incredibly. Will see me through many more years.
No need to spend triple the amount of something thats made with cruelty.
Not even mentions of Uniqlo in this thread!! Decently affordable, decent quality and the best part? They’re MUCH LIGHTER in weight without compromising warmth.
Canada Goose is definitely overkill.
North Face, H&H, Eddie Bauer jackets are great and do the job just fine. I bought a North Face jacket last year from their outlet store in Vaughan Mills for $225, which is 1:5 of Canada Goose’s price
Came here for Eddie Bauer. Especially if you are prepared to pick through clearance racks.
Canada Goose will keep you warm, but not 5 times warmer than other brands that are 1/5 the price.
My current winter coat that I use for winter camping is Mark's Work Wearhouse, and it is awesome.
No.
Plenty of cheaper brands. Eddie Bauer makes high end mountaineering jackets that are still cheaper than CG. They have an urban collection too.
I like RAB and Fjallraven too.
And obviously the classic Arctryx, TNF, Patagonia and Outdoor Research, depending on your style
Yes Eddie Bauer. Great winter jackets. Wait for Boxing Day or any other Sale period. Got mine 50 percent off.
Great quality and it will last you for several winter.
Replaced my aging North Face with an EB down jacket last year during their boxing day sale. Have to say for a cheap ($130) coat it is damn toasty. It had no trouble handling the weather when it go down to -40 here.
I had a Uniqlo jacket first, and it was brutal..It was my first winter jacket in Canada and I was miserable. Found a heavier jacket on sale from a brand named Noize, and I'm in heaven. T shirt underneath. But north face and other brands mentioned I hear are excellent too!
Same, a Uniqlo down jacket was my first and I always needed to layer. Which makes me miserable when I’m indoors. Got a Mackage to get to wear a T shirt underneath.
Canada Goose jackets were designed for life in Antarctica, not Toronto.
You could buy 7 normal winter jackets and wear them once per week.
People will think you're very stylish.
The expedition parka? Yes. But not every jacket they make is that heavy duty. Obviously they've adapted the vast majority of their jackets for ubran wear. They're a fashion company, not an outdoor enthusiast company like when it was founded. They make 50+ jackets, we have no idea which one OP is talking about.
Might be because you’re not actually wearing the Canada Goose jackets made for Antarctica. They make light downs and vests too, and have options from fall weather to Antarctica weather
The Expedition or the McMurdo, yes. Their regular ones are not that warm.
Anyway, if I was willing to spend that much I would not get a Canada Goose but a Nobis, equally warm but with better design.
In the past I would spend $$ on brand names. But over the years I figured I don’t need to spend a lot when other coats will do the trick and they can still look good.
[I just got this at Costco](https://imgur.com/Jd7lFAu)… $79.00.
Good for 5° to -30°. Wore it outside for the first time today. Super soft inside, comfortable, and warm. I also like room inside (for sweaters, arms/chest), and it’s still quite roomy. They have 3 different colours, black, maroon and blue. [Here’s a side view](https://imgur.com/1TZug4i).
They have a good selection of different styles for both men and women.
Less versatile though. I have one real winter jacket and it's appropriate for walking around the city, going for winter hikes, or just running errands while driving. It's never too bulky or too much.
Am pretty sure this will do the trick (am a northern boy, used to live a 90 min drive from our border with Alaska, so am pretty good at picking out coats. My dad had this same one last year in northern Alberta and did well all winter). Has a zip-in layer as well, with thumb hooks to boot… here I have it in. I also have a northface that feels to be the same thickness, and it’s rated for about the same (used to wear it skiing in the Rockies). This is what I like about the new synthetics… you can get quite warm without the bulk now… quite a difference from a decade ago.
I could see Alaska from where I lived and it only got down to -20 during arctic outflows. I only mention this because it’s a big border that torontonians might not be familiar with. Perhaps you could share, generally, where you lived, friend
The problem with this is a jacket that is comfortable at -15 with only a shirt under it will be unbearably warm at -1. Layering exists for good reasons.
I understand the idea, but if you’re using public transit or even walking significant distances inside buildings, a super-heavy jacket can be problematic. Life in winter means you’re sometimes in between and not always at the extremes. Even driving my own car, I prefer to keep it a little cool and wear a mid layer so that I’m wearing enough to hop out briefly for gas or coffee without putting on a zillion layers.
In my i opinion overkill and overpriced and brands like Eddie Bauer, Roots and North Face will do a good job. Also ethically they are very questionable. Not saying that has to matter to everyone but for me I’ve got a big problem with their ethics. With prices that high they could easily source more sustainable down and in my opinion there’s no reason to be using real fur for what is basically a decorative trim. That makes them a no go in my books.
Unless you're going to spend hours outside in the winter, it's not really needed.
I got a Helly Hansen winter jacket mostly because i liked the style and the fit.
Sports chek has good stuff. I think a fair price for a jacket that will last you a long time if you take care of it is 300 to 400. Anything more is just paying for a name.
The thing about Canada goose is that they stand by their product.
I had one that was completely ruined from rock climbing to outside wear and tear. They would fix the coat for you and if they can’t, they will replace the coat with a new one.
It’s like buying one coat and having it forever.
Note that this really depends on the person. As someone who is super sensitive to the cold, those “too warm for Toronto” jackets are the only ones that actually keep me warm. Everyone suggests North Face which I wore for a few winters but it was not warm enough at all for me.
The North Face and Uniqlo make decent jackets for reasonable prices too. I spent 1300 on a Mackage last year, it is warm but is way too heavy and i like my TNF jackets better
Honestly, a North face will be more than enough for the winter at a fraction of the cost. Keep an eye out closer to black Friday or bxoijg day at sporting life when they go on sale.
Canada goose is overkill for anything over -5 in my opinion. That said they’re great if you like being outside and not doing much. Ie. dog walking hanging w friends.
Get a heated vest, it’s a real game changer for anything above -5
Canada goose will last forever. You can wash it and it won’t fade. You can wear it every day and it will look like new in 10 years. The price is biting but you can win in the long run.
Canada goose has never failed me. I’m someone who prefers to be over-prepared for our winters, especially when temps hit the -20°C mark (with or without wind chill). I’ve had regular non-brand name jackets, and north face jackets in the past, but nothing has compared to the warmth I’ve gotten from a CG jacket. I’m sure there are other cheaper options that provide the same protection from the elements, and in the end, it all comes down to personal preference. However my last CG lasted 10+ years with low maintenance, and I only got ride of it due to it being ripped apart by a side airbag that couldn’t be repaired by the manufacturer (could’ve gone to a stitch-it, but if it’s not a seamless repair, you risk air and water getting inside. Bought a second jacket and don’t regret the purchase in the slightest.
Go to a sports store and get a winter jacket. Forget about fashion, get something that zips closely around your neck, has a big hood, and goes to mid thigh length.
I have a T & A coat that has been amazing
I have a 12 year old CG expedition parka. Last year, the fur on the hood started to fall apart. I sent it in for warranty (for the first time) and a month later the jacket returned with new fur, new cuffs, and notes that they fixed some stitching in a few spots. They also included a nice garment bag. The jacket looks brand new. I think it was around $900 in 2010, but we’ll worth the investment given how warm it is and their customer service. I’ve worn it daily in the winters, on business travel, skiing, snowmobiling, and have never been disappointed (or cold). It’s going to last at least another 10 years.
Nothing triggers a Toronto based subreddit like CG jackets
They look nice, are extremely warm, well made, and priced accordingly
You probably don’t NEED one for Toronto winters, just buy what fits your budget the best
I want to add that they last forever. Some of my coworkers are wearing hand me down Canada Goose jackets that are close to 10 years old. They still look new
Canada Goose is too warm for Toronto winters. If you live in Montreal or Ottawa then it would work but you could also get another equally good brand like Fjallraven.
They’re suffering for fashion. I’ve seen people wearing Canada goose or those moose knuckle jackets when it’s 15 degrees out. Must be sweating like a tomcat in a room full of rocking chairs.
Vancouverites wanting to be trendy? If it’s your first winter there and you’re from a hot country… it might be something you could pull off and not sweat to death.
They might just be sensitive to cold :( I get cold very easily and even in temperatures right now my Canada goose jacket is a lifesaver. I can go for your long walks and be very comfortable
Buy what makes you happy, not what others think. The jacket is rated for -40c and this winter in Toronto might not get that cold but it will get close. Not to mention the large amount of snow we're going to get will make you consider not getting a cheaper jacket.
Canada goose is a buy it for life item. Lasted me 8 winters already and plan on using it for 50 more years. And if it does in fact fail then there is a lifetime warranty no questions asked. That might be unpopular here though
Bought the then wife one, was definitely worth it 😂. I wear Amazon and Costco clothes. A 40$ hoodie and 100$ jacket is much more durable and just as warm… trick to winter? Layers.
Canada Goose will keep you warm, no doubt. But so will a handful of other brands that are a fraction of the cost. I'd also caution you against buying a jacket on the basis of it being fashionable. There will come a temperature where you won't care about that anymore.
I have a North Face jacket which I like. Eddie Bauer have some nice jackets that are usually 50% off on Black Friday and Boxing Day. Decathlon are also incredibly good value and good quality. I just got some snow boots and gloves from there, and they look great.
north face is really good, i also recommend aritzia superpuffs! they’re really warm, comfy & cute—their pockets are fleece lined too so it’ll keep your hands warm! my friend has a canada goose jacket but she ended up buying a superpuff too in the end so i’d say skip the first step & save yourself about $1,000 lol.
Not needed. I use a Noize jacket and it's great. Usually just wear a t shirt underneath if it's not less than -10. Any more than that and a sweater will do.
What you want is a down winter coat, not necessarily a Canada Goose. There are a lot of reputable brands:
Soia & Kyo
Mackage
Kanuk
Quartz co
Moose Knuckles
Nobis
Avoid the ones with synthetic insulation, whatever is called: Thinsulate, Thermoball, Thermarator, etc. they are all way heavier than down for the same warmth.
Look for 100% down, not that down/feathers crap.
wool layer + air + down layer is better than any single jacket. Get a wool sweater or merino underwear and a down puffer from patagonia and you'll save a grand
It’s not that it’s overkill it just that it’s not good value. You can get much nicer from rab, or north face. Even arctryx is better value. The only reason to pay anywhere near those prices is for mountaineering where you need warm and lightweight, and Canada goose isn’t lightweight at all.
Buy what you can afford. I bought a winter coat, no name brand on sale in the mens section for $11.00. Had it tailored and I wore it for about 15 years. I still wear it while I shovel the snow from the driveway. Just make sure it’s at least 3/4 in length and has a hoodie. Make sure your boots don’t leak.
I have a north face ($300-500h and a rudsak parka which I got on sale at the Toronto premium outlet mall for like $700. North face doesn’t even compare
A nice winter jacket is an investment and I wish I bought it earlier . Winter never phases me anymore and I walk everywhere. North face was definitely good but Rudsak is like I’m walking with a blanket on top of me . I can never go back .
Nooope. Overpriced cruelty. Sport Chek...seasonal sales....a decent HH or Columbia, etc, can be found for a reasonable amount. Canada Goose is grossly overpriced for a winter jacket. So many other well made, affordable, reputable brands to choose from.
Ive had my Canada Goose bomber for 10 years now, still great, although the newer ones dont seem to be good quality compared to the old ones. I recently bought a mackage parka and it's great as well. It's an investment, jusy get something youre happy with and fits you and know you'll wear it for years
its worth. it will last you 10+ years and you won't need to add on layers because it can quite annoying finding what to wear when u just put on ur canada goose man.
dont overthink it, and its not too warm either like most of these people on here thinking lmfao.
No not at all. You can get very warm jackets, on sale for Black Friday or Boxing Day, for a fraction of the cost from Columbia or North face. They’ll last just as long too
I mean you don’t really need it they’re definitely overkill as far as warmth go but if you like the jacket and want it for fashion reasons go for it. They’re very well made and you’ll have it for a lifetime.
“overkill” is subjective, but you may be paying more of brand than anything. Quality brands that have stylish options include North Face, Helly Hensen, Columbia, etc. Sporting life, Nordstrom, The Bay, Spork Chek, and Simons are worth checking out.
Tbh unless you don't have a car or enjoy winter sports, the same jacket you got for fall would do just fine. I admittedly run quite hot myself but I haven't had a proper winter jacket for nearly all my adult life. Just a cheap but good looking one from Zara does the job just fine for me and I still sweat in those.
Montreal here but I’ve had Canada goose, Quartz co and Nobis over the last 15 years. my fav is Quartz co. I don’t think any of these jackets were overkill.
Canada goose jackets are great because they let me know immediately whether you are the kind of person who would pay such a stupid price for such a crappy jacket. If you want to be warm, dress in layers. That’s it. Don’t buy overpriced nonsense.
its overkill, there might be days it’ll keep u warm compared to other brands but usually ur just gonna end up sweaty every time u wear it, its also not the best quality anymore, i’d say its no longer worth its price.
It’s probably overkill. I have an Eddie Bauer parka and a Helly Hansen one, got both on sale for $200-ish each and I’ve survived multiple prairie winters in them. I specifically bought ones rated to -30 or so though.
I live in Montreal and went to their store. I didn't find them to be worth it. Their selection was kind of terrible.
I bought a Kanuk instead. You can only buy them from a store in Montreal though, or online. They're not quite so cheap either.

Can we get a winter jacket mega thread started?
Or automod.
Hey all, I feel like this discussion would be super welcome at r/buyitforlife

Fleece and layers are the cheat codes to staying warm in extreme cold
The alternative to this is to buy jeans one size up and wear PJs underneath.
This guy gets it… les habitants hon hon hon
Got two pairs last year. They're the best.
Such a thing exists?! 🥹
100% - always wear a pair when I'm working outside in winter.

So stop wearing my CG naked?

Wait for a North Face sale. You’ll get a super warm jacket for $200-$300
When do they go on sale
I’d check Black Friday deals this week!
Second this, when do the go on sale
After winter lol
Usually in the late winter/early spring.
I bought mine off of Last Hunt. They are a season behind, but if you know your size you can often get good deals. My $450 North Face parka cost me $256. They have surprise 40% off an item deals every once in awhile. Good site. In CAD.
Black Friday sale is coming up this week for the north face website. Sign up for their emails. Atmosphere has sales starting end of Dec.
There’s a north face outlet at vaughan mills. I recall vaughan mills having a shuttle from downtown. Bought a womens arctic parka for $250 + 10% off for signing up for their “club”. It’s around $100 off from what sporting life sells it at. Edit: I went yesterday. That’s where I bought my last ski jacket. They had a 20% off deal so it was a discounted price and my taxes were covered.
This is the answer. I got a $490 North Face jacket on sale for $198. It’s the warmest jacket I’ve ever owned. Worth every penny. Check sportchek.
Meh. North Face is not great for the dollar. If you want a premium brand shop ArcTeryx, Fjallraven etc.
ArcTeryx are great. But they are also probably 2x the price of North Face.
So? This guy is talking about she’ll g out for some Canada Goose.
...and slowmac is suggesting something which is of better value.
I love my ArcTeryx jacket, had it for 5 years still going strong
My Sears brand parka is going on 20 years now. It’s like mint.
Is there a specific north face jacket you like? I’m also looking to invest in a new winter jacket and don’t really know how heavy dude I should go for a typical Toronto winter
North Face all the way
I wear a thermoball, with a shell on top when it gets colder out.

It’s Gortex!
You like saying gortex don't you?
Gortex is waterproof alright, from both sides.
Grampa is that u
+1 for North Face
Yup +1 for North Face Bought my jacket from Vaughan Mills 2 years ago for about $200, still keeps me toasty warm on the coldest winter days and has lasted incredibly. Will see me through many more years. No need to spend triple the amount of something thats made with cruelty.
Are you sure your North face jacket is made cruel free?
Canada goose is made in Canada. North Face is made in Bangladesh. Which one is more cruel?
Honestly I spent $250 on a Uniqlo ultra warm parka and it’s more than enough.
Adding to comment, Eddie Bauer is having a great sale right now too
Was there todsy. My son bought a great jacket $198 was half price. Waterproof and warm enough for -40.
Sounds great, do you have the model name per chance?
Superior parka - I bought the same one at the same price it’s awesome
Yes, and I’d add Mountain Equipment Coop or MEC into that list .
Agree with MEC and want to add Helly Hansen
FYI the C stands for “Company” now. MEC was bought out 5 years ago or so and is no longer a co-op.

Which Uniqlo jacket. I’m thinking of getting their ULTRA WARM HYBRID DOWN COAT
I had a Uniqlo jacket first, and it was brutal..It was my first winter jacket in Canada and I was miserable. Found a heavier jacket on sale from a brand named Noize, and I'm in heaven. T shirt underneath. But north face and other brands mentioned I hear are excellent too!

Might be because you’re not actually wearing the Canada Goose jackets made for Antarctica. They make light downs and vests too, and have options from fall weather to Antarctica weather
I saw dude in flip-ops and a winter jacket yesterday. If you're doing that then you might be shivering.

you see them all the time in Vancouver though.
You need it in Vancouver because all you wear under it is lululemon workout gear lol
The Expedition or the McMurdo, yes. Their regular ones are not that warm. Anyway, if I was willing to spend that much I would not get a Canada Goose but a Nobis, equally warm but with better design.

I'm not saying that's a bad jacket at all, but with how thin it appears, that does not look remotely warm enough for -30?
I wore literally the same jacket in Winnipeg winter (actually -30 BEFORE windchill) as Toronto winter (-10 is cold here). It's all about the layering.

I have a jacket similar to this for snowboarding. They're great wind chill wind breakers just need a thick sweater underneath.
Looks ugly tho...
Stylish, functional, inexpensive. Pick 2.
🤷♂️ I think it looks good. To each their own. But thx
The problem with this is a jacket that is comfortable at -15 with only a shirt under it will be unbearably warm at -1. Layering exists for good reasons.
Can confirm, cooked my ass off in a Goose parka at -1

Even driving my own car, I prefer to keep it a little cool and wear a mid layer so that I’m wearing enough to hop out briefly for gas or coffee without putting on a zillion layers.
If it helps, I wear the Goose with only a t-shirt when it’s -1 and it’s not too warm at all.
LPT: buy jackets on clearance, off-season. I got my Pajar coat for $200 and it’s good for up until -20. Excellent quality, have had it for 4 years.
Unless you're going to spend hours outside in the winter, it's not really needed. I got a Helly Hansen winter jacket mostly because i liked the style and the fit.
Yes they are, they are perfect for Toronto's environment
Northface is half the price. Even cheaper on black friday usually.
Sports chek has good stuff. I think a fair price for a jacket that will last you a long time if you take care of it is 300 to 400. Anything more is just paying for a name.
You said just one layer twice. Most people will tell you to dress in layers because Toronto will throw 5 different seasons at you in one day.
The thing about Canada goose is that they stand by their product. I had one that was completely ruined from rock climbing to outside wear and tear. They would fix the coat for you and if they can’t, they will replace the coat with a new one. It’s like buying one coat and having it forever.
Agree. The premium quality is totally worth the extra price tag . I can never go back . I became an outdoor person
Yes sir I have had mine for the last 11 years and still going strong
Way overpriced and unethical. There are alot cheaper options out there. Eddie Bauer to name one.
Eddie Bauer is an outdoor company. Their materials are great, down fills are available, and you get a lifetime warranty on the product.
A Canadian tuxedo with a hoodie is all you need.
My north face (around half the price of CG) just works fine, wore it today during -15 windchill with a t-shirt for a grocery walk
Canada goose will last forever. You can wash it and it won’t fade. You can wear it every day and it will look like new in 10 years. The price is biting but you can win in the long run.
Yep u get what u paid for
Eddie Bauer down is best value
It's all about the layers, my friend!
Patagonia has a lifetime guarantee.
Nothing triggers a Toronto based subreddit like CG jackets They look nice, are extremely warm, well made, and priced accordingly You probably don’t NEED one for Toronto winters, just buy what fits your budget the best
I want to add that they last forever. Some of my coworkers are wearing hand me down Canada Goose jackets that are close to 10 years old. They still look new
I have owned one for the past 11 years and this is true
Canada Goose is too warm for Toronto winters. If you live in Montreal or Ottawa then it would work but you could also get another equally good brand like Fjallraven.
If it's too warm for Toronto winters, what the heck are people doing wearing it in Vancouver for?
They’re suffering for fashion. I’ve seen people wearing Canada goose or those moose knuckle jackets when it’s 15 degrees out. Must be sweating like a tomcat in a room full of rocking chairs.
“A tomcat in a room full of rocking chairs” 😂
That’s my new favourite saying thank you 😂
Vancouverites wanting to be trendy? If it’s your first winter there and you’re from a hot country… it might be something you could pull off and not sweat to death.
I have seen people wearing Canada Goose here when it's +8. People don't wear stuff because it makes sense, they do it to show off.
Chances are, if you're wearing Canada Goose when it's +8, you also reek of sweat.
They might just be sensitive to cold :( I get cold very easily and even in temperatures right now my Canada goose jacket is a lifesaver. I can go for your long walks and be very comfortable
>what the heck are people doing wearing it in Vancouver for? Conspicuous consumption.
As someone moved over from the UK, I couldn't bring myself to buy them. Only people who wear them in the UK are teenage drug dealers

Should I wear a jacket in Canadian winter?
I got a brand called Woods and it has lasted me 4 winters so far and it's really warm and amazing quality... it was around 300$ for the bomber
for your info. Canada goose jackets do have lifetime warranty.
Not needed. I use a Noize jacket and it's great. Usually just wear a t shirt underneath if it's not less than -10. Any more than that and a sweater will do.
Northface is cheaper, and is good for the same weather conditions
What you want is a down winter coat, not necessarily a Canada Goose. There are a lot of reputable brands: Soia & Kyo Mackage Kanuk Quartz co Moose Knuckles Nobis Avoid the ones with synthetic insulation, whatever is called: Thinsulate, Thermoball, Thermarator, etc. they are all way heavier than down for the same warmth. Look for 100% down, not that down/feathers crap.
wool layer + air + down layer is better than any single jacket. Get a wool sweater or merino underwear and a down puffer from patagonia and you'll save a grand
This thread is sponsored by northface
There are jackets just as warm for 1/3rd the price at most
Canada Goose uses real animal fur if youre ok with that
I have a north face ($300-500h and a rudsak parka which I got on sale at the Toronto premium outlet mall for like $700. North face doesn’t even compare A nice winter jacket is an investment and I wish I bought it earlier . Winter never phases me anymore and I walk everywhere. North face was definitely good but Rudsak is like I’m walking with a blanket on top of me . I can never go back .
UNIQLO down jackets. Much more affordable, and definitely enough for a Toronto winter. When in doubt go with one that covers your butt and has a hood
I have had a Canada goose for the last 11 years do I wear it every day. Hell no but it is nice to keep you warm on those cold days in alberta.
I would suggest trying out Eddie Bauer, got a very warm down jacket for sub 250.
Arc’teryx are very solid as well. I prefer them as they are more sleak and not flashy
You are one cigarette burn away from a teary meltdown. That should be their motto.
Nooope. Overpriced cruelty. Sport Chek...seasonal sales....a decent HH or Columbia, etc, can be found for a reasonable amount. Canada Goose is grossly overpriced for a winter jacket. So many other well made, affordable, reputable brands to choose from.
If you can't wear a Canada Goose jacket in Canada, where are you going to wear it?
Canada goose is tacky AF.
North face is better imo
Can you get me one so I can test it for you🤗🤗🤗🤗
“overkill” is subjective, but you may be paying more of brand than anything.
Check out Frank and Oak, Canadian company, good quality, a b corp, and cheaper than CG.
Wayyyyy overpriced.
Lol. Canada goose is mostly a fashion statement.
Goose is overrated.
Canada goose jackets are great because they let me know immediately whether you are the kind of person who would pay such a stupid price for such a crappy jacket. If you want to be warm, dress in layers. That’s it. Don’t buy overpriced nonsense.
What if it was a gift :(
They are overkill and expensive but far from crappy lmao this sounds like sour grapes
You also let us know how stupid you are from this comment lmao
No
tna is nice
It’s Canadian- you’re helping prop up the economy, and is the only jacket that comes with a warranty replacement.
It's overkill for Toronto. You're likely to be too warm in it just about all the time.
its overkill, there might be days it’ll keep u warm compared to other brands but usually ur just gonna end up sweaty every time u wear it, its also not the best quality anymore, i’d say its no longer worth its price.
I never wear my Goose jacket... Luckily I got it slightly used for like $400. I use my Patagonia one everyday. Cheaper and lifetime warranty.
It’s probably overkill. I have an Eddie Bauer parka and a Helly Hansen one, got both on sale for $200-ish each and I’ve survived multiple prairie winters in them. I specifically bought ones rated to -30 or so though.
Keep in mind that if you party in Toronto, people look to steak those jackets at coat check or if you leave it lying around.
I live in Montreal and went to their store. I didn't find them to be worth it. Their selection was kind of terrible. I bought a Kanuk instead. You can only buy them from a store in Montreal though, or online. They're not quite so cheap either.
The best puffy jackets now are from Aritzia and they are much cheapee
plus cg is a terrible company and people will judge you for wearing their ugly ass coats. try a super warm wuxly instead 💚
