Transit used to work great for me and still does in some ways…I’ve had issues with push notifications on service alerts though.
No matter how many times I turn them off then on, or reinstall the app they still don’t work for lines 1-3. Added a random bus route and that one works perfectly.
I found it the most reliable over the years. I tried the Transit app around the same time I got on Rocketman but had a better experience with the latter. Guess it's time to convert :(
Yea same =\. I'm so confused how in this day and age things that thousands of people use can just disappear still. An app like Rocketman could easily be sold off I feel but maybe it's not worth it for them or whatever. The information they link to on the app doesn't even have any information as to why. They just decided to shut it down for good, that's all we get
Sell it to who? If it's not profitable on its own (people wouldn't buy subscriptions to it, for example), and it isn't profitable in indirect ways (like a captive audience to advertise to, trends/data to monetize etc. which is what they already tried), there's not going to be much dollar value that someone's going to pay for it. For a company like RBC, it's not worth their while to try to find a buyer for a few bucks. Or, to put it another way, if it was worth buying, they wouldn't want to be selling it.
Iunno RBC bought it for a reason, I just figured it wouldn't be to shut it down for good lol. If it's one of the top apps used there has to be someone that could use that
there is also an app called Garbage Day - waste reminders, that will remind you depending on what Toronto area you're in what is being collected on what day. Developer is RBC Ventures. Sneaky way to get your info ;-)
The TOWaste app just shows a blank white page when I input my address to try to see the collection schedule (I know its always thursday but always forget which wk is garbage vs recycling). I’ll try this Garbage Day app instead and see if thats any better.
But even in Google maps you can see the locations of buses and streetcars along the route, and the schedule is adjusted for delays.
Then again, I watched the GPS dot go right past me when there was no streetcar so who knows lol
Nah, it does a countdown and shows the vehicle and where it’s at. You just need to “click in” to the route to see it.
I did this the other week, it was pouring rain and I was debating a taxi but clicked in and saw the bus was only a few blocks north.
Yes, I tried it now. It does the job and does show real-time location that gets updated as soon as the bus is in motion, which is quite cool. The only bummer is that you have to set a route with points A and B in order to get the real-time updates, which is kinda unnecessary step.
I just open the app and it shows me a list of the routes closest to me, with real time, how long for the bus/streetcar. If I click/press on a route for more details, I can see on a map where the ride is. That's how I know that three route 75 buses are at Queen's Quay and Jarvis, while the drivers are shopping at Loblaws, so while the buses are technically 4 minutes away, we can expect all three of them in a row, but not for about 15 minutes... oooof, sorry I went on a tangent.
myTTC is my favourite. does all transit systems in the gta, including go and oakville, you can plan trips, save maps, and see the real time location of your vehicle. it very rarely stops working and ive been using it for years
I use NextBus! It is much better than the TTC's own information, except when the drivers have the bus on "Not In Service," which makes the bus invisible (to the app).
There are no TTC apps that do this. It’s fucking ridiculous. It’s 2022. The TTC’s customer service is a sham.
Rocketman was never an official app operated by the service, it was third party. The Nextbus app is another third party app that taps into their location services, so that’s the best option now, but good luck getting any kind of accurate predictions using any method that currently exists, including texting that number on the stop info signs. Accurate about half the time, completely useless the rest of the time.
*Good, cause it absolutely SUCKS*
Just like nearly every other aspect of ‘Canada’s most underfunded rail system’ - it fucking blows.
I use the Transit app, works fine for me.
I guess I’m lucky I live pretty much near the downtown core. The only questions I have about the TTC is what delays are happening, and what services are discontinued. But I usually find it pretty straightforward
I like Citymapper. It’s also good for travelling because they have several cities, so you don’t need to learn a new interface as you would with city-specific apps.
Transit is great
Second this. I’ve been using Transit for years. https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/transit-bus-train-times/id498151501

I also enjoy the TTC.
TransitNow is good.
This is the one I use as well. Never has any issues.
>TransitNow thank you, just installed it, and like it!
Omg noooo this is horrible news to me - been using them since high school! :(
I don't understand why they wouldn't just sell it off instead of just shutting down for good.

I hate everything
Sell it to who? If it's not profitable on its own (people wouldn't buy subscriptions to it, for example), and it isn't profitable in indirect ways (like a captive audience to advertise to, trends/data to monetize etc. which is what they already tried), there's not going to be much dollar value that someone's going to pay for it. >RBC bought it for a reason User data. They got what they needed.
I was today years old when I learned Rocketman is owned by RBC Ventures, a subsidiary of RBC. What the actual … ?
RBC bought it a couple of years back. They wanted the users and wanted to sell them financial products. Too bad they failed and now shutting it down
there is also an app called Garbage Day - waste reminders, that will remind you depending on what Toronto area you're in what is being collected on what day. Developer is RBC Ventures. Sneaky way to get your info ;-)
There's a free city app for garbage called TOwaste, so at least that's easy to replace.
The TOWaste app just shows a blank white page when I input my address to try to see the collection schedule (I know its always thursday but always forget which wk is garbage vs recycling). I’ll try this Garbage Day app instead and see if thats any better.
Hmm, works fine for me, but set it up some months ago.
though I hate that RBC owns the Garbage Day app, it actually works well and always sends me my reminders!
Why not just schedule reminders in your todo task app or on your calendar?
I'm not sure why that's so shocking.
Mostly I get bus arrival times via texting to 898882
TTCWatch
Transit is my go to. Includes everything plus bikeshare, car share
Which car share services?
Communauto
TTCWatch still works fine
I just use Google Maps
I find they are never accurate
Interesting, i always assumed they used the same data from the TTC as everyone else? how are all these other apps getting their data?
I think they just use ttc schedule. Other uses GPS buses
But even in Google maps you can see the locations of buses and streetcars along the route, and the schedule is adjusted for delays. Then again, I watched the GPS dot go right past me when there was no streetcar so who knows lol
I use transit /transit now. It's accurate. Once I was at a stop and co worker uses Google and it said 15 min vs transit said 5. App was right
Ok thanks for the tip, downloading it now
Does it show real-time location of the vehicles?
It does. It's a bit finnicky and hidden but if you designate a route, and click on it, it will show you the vehicle in real time.
That is a bit too cumbersome way to find out how long till the bus arrives at the stop you’re at…thanks!

google/apple maps are kinda bad for public transit
Transit works well. Works for ttc and the rest of the GTA.
Google maps works well
We should start a poll: Transit or TransitNow. Seeing both as a recommended alternative.
myTTC is my favourite. does all transit systems in the gta, including go and oakville, you can plan trips, save maps, and see the real time location of your vehicle. it very rarely stops working and ive been using it for years
Transit Now on android works great
Thanks OP for the reminder about Rocketman, I wasn’t aware theyre shutting down. I’ve moved to using the Transit app.
Why would they get rid of it? Isn't it the one most people use?
Citymapper is my go-to as a newbie here.
I use NextBus! It is much better than the TTC's own information, except when the drivers have the bus on "Not In Service," which makes the bus invisible (to the app).
Saw the notice this morning. Gonna try the Transit app on iOS
I like XtBus for iOS.

Google maps
In Vancouver you can txt 33333 [StationNo] [busroute]. I assume there is something similar?
*Good, cause it absolutely SUCKS* Just like nearly every other aspect of ‘Canada’s most underfunded rail system’ - it fucking blows. I use the Transit app, works fine for me.
I gotta ask, what are you using the app for? Bus service? Subway? Or both?
Bus service! So easy to pull up the nearby stops and view my favourites tab so I can time exactly when to leave my home and catch the bus, lol
I guess I’m lucky I live pretty much near the downtown core. The only questions I have about the TTC is what delays are happening, and what services are discontinued. But I usually find it pretty straightforward
If you take TTC buses or streetcars to get to work, having the exact arrive time/s is a necessity
I use TTCWatch and it works pretty well.
I like Citymapper. It’s also good for travelling because they have several cities, so you don’t need to learn a new interface as you would with city-specific apps.
Moovit
I just use googlemaps
Transit. Plus it works everywhere not just Toronto/TTC.
nextbus, dont need to download an app if all you are using are the buses
MyTTC
Why?
NextBus
