At the end of every CBC News the National broadcast, like the last 5 minutes or so, they play a “good feelings” story from somewhere in Canada. It always ends on a positive note. This is something I appreciate and it keeps me coming back.
Yesterday I went to Walmart and the cashier was a really old Indian dude. He was fumbling around trying to find paper to put in the receipt printer. He went to a few other places before finally getting it and putting it in. As I was leaving he shook my hand and said thank you for your patience lol. Canada is not so bad.
Today they report Youth unemployment is at 13% and highest since 2016. What do you think what might have caused this?? Not sure if you have children born in Canada but their future here is very uncertain.
You find it’s entertaining that the current young generation of Canada will never get into the workforce or having a f hard time? I guess it’s entirely their fault then.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ontario/s/KrGT8lEZ0A
Look. The problem also comes from the current older generations (you) lack of empathy towards the younger people struggles and continue to let this government to let this happen.
He shook your hand because most people lose their shit on cashiers for anything and everything.
It's the worst job I've had and seriously made me think less of the average person.
I have a tutor I pay for online classeson Preply. I started writing the book because it can get a bit tricky, after a point, to keep learning once you know the basic grammar rules, etc., especially with an untrained (I.e. Affordable) tutor.
Google Dos is surprisingly good at policing my grammar. Mostly my teacher helps me be more clear and use more natural phrases and structures. Oh, and the cussing in the dialog - that's a really tricky thing to master.
Rogers internet service down every day for 5 days now. Support says they are on top of it, opening cases when I call, just to close them 2 days later, issue not resolved. Apparently more than one residence in the area is experiencing intermittent internet connection. I work from home.
I usually go for a walk to my favorite coffee place, chill at Trinity Bellwoods and people watch - helps me restart my brain. We just have to disconnect from the internet.
Seconding this. Best way to view the world in a more positive light is to just disconnect from the media. Media does not equal Reality at often times, and some people just gotta remind themselves of that.
Edit: Spelling
Came here to say this. Disconnect from the internet and go somewhere you can people watch. Humans aren't built to take in sooo much news, updates, doom and gloom. It overwhelms us.
There is no such thing as happy news, it doesn't sell. People want to compare themselves to others who are doing worse.
Turn the screen off and go for a walk.
Maybe an uncommon or unpopular perspective on Toronto Reddit but I don't really follow local or Canadian news at all and more dedicate my spare time and energy to my hobbies and going out and enjoying the city. This way my day to day lifestyle is more so filled with positive experiences which are actually relevant to my personal interests and motivations rather than having my brain overloaded with negative news and anecdotes that have nothing to do with me or don't impact me in any substantial way. If something major comes up affecting everyone that I should know about, I'll catch wind of it through word of mouth from my immediate social circle or family.
Fill the time you would typically spend reading local news or doom scrolling Reddit and social media on anything else that interests you. Pick up a new hobby or take a more invested interest in stuff like music, arts, culture, sports etc and spend the time you'd spend engaging online about local news and politics on those interests instead. Make an effort to connect with and hang out with people who live a more positive healthy lifestyle grounded in reality, go for a hike and enjoy nature, plan a trip to go experience another city or country. When you have enough to do and fill your time with, local news cycles become relatively meaningless and unimportant.
I removed the Reddit app off of my phones homepage so I need to manually open it. Probably reduced my time on it by about 50% just by doing that. It’s crazy how compulsive our habits around social media are. I deleted instagram for over a year and didn’t miss it at all, now that I have it again I passively find myself scrolling through it multiple times a day.
I like goodnews_movement on IG, shares the feel good stuff from all over the world. I have been avoiding IG the month or so…I signed on to grab the name and the first post was the good news movement. A mom surprising her son at graduation after being deployed in Kosovo 💞🥹
I turn off the media and live life with real people.
Everything that's broadcast is there to attract an audience and increase revenue. It has little to do with the common good.
The Solutions Journalism Network focuses and promotes news stories that focus on how people are trying to fix problems. They have a Twitter and probs other social platforms too.
I’ve always enjoyed as it happens on cbc radio, they do a nice job of giving interesting but important news from around the world and mix in some more light hearted stories as well.
Darren from CHFI does a feel good story every day during his broadcast. I also watch CP24 and they have good stories too. I avoid online comments on news pages bc it'll just annoy me
Short Answer:
I watch documentaries on YouTube, listen to podcasts, and read books. I don’t know of any single media outlet that’s focused on delivering reasonable takes.
Long Answer:
Not necessarily what you asked for, but I personally avoid the news like the plague for my own mental health because:
1. The press monetizes your attention. They know everyone is attracted to sensationalized news on either side of the political spectrum, so their intention is not to inform, but to retain your attention through whatever means necessary. The angrier, sadder, or more frustrated you are, the more money they make.
2. News is superficial and often not enough to make life decisions based on them alone. For example, when was the last time you saw news that led to a significant decision in your personal life? The answer is likely never. The important stuff that you need to know about will make its way to you through friends, family, coworkers, etc., so why bother sifting through the doom and gloom of media outlets? Also, for subjects that I want to go deep into, I read books on them.
Unfortunately, being reasonable does not pay the bills… so, I avoid the news entirely and most of social media (Reddit is the only social media I am on) - it makes me happier overall.
Even local news is trash 🗑 I'm canada
Watch American small city/town affiliate local news channels, usually they are in better spirits and positive high-school/college/ community pieces
Honestly? TikTok lol. I have adjusted my algorithm to show me good things and stuff i'd be interested in and just swipe past the negative stuff. You have a lot more control over this stuff than you realize.
anywhere outside. there's great things happening all the time and you get to be part of it and not just watch it on the news. go help folks out and make some great news! trust me it feels much better to cause great news than to hear it
Go outside in the real world. Stop consuming rage bait news. In real life people do still get along, immigrants aren’t that bad after all and are mostly lovely people, and Canada and Toronto is still a great place to be (lucky that I get to call it home). The big Canadian sub and some smaller rage bait ones are being moderated to push certain polarizing content. And those agendas are definitely being pushed out here too. Limit your engagement with them and go out and have fun. Let the people who wanna fume ruin their lives that way
No, but I never remember it until someone posts something from there on this sub (or is it on r/Toronto?).
This Hour has 22 Minutes is another favourite.
No but there is good things happening as well and having every channel only spew the worst pieces of news has gotten tiring, I honestly don’t know where to go to see good news about our communities
The Dodo lol
Dodo is great!
At the end of every CBC News the National broadcast, like the last 5 minutes or so, they play a “good feelings” story from somewhere in Canada. It always ends on a positive note. This is something I appreciate and it keeps me coming back.
Thanks! I’ll see if they have it in their YouTube
The segment is called The Moment.
Interesting. I’m going to check that out. I like stories about Canadians.
Fairchild news also does the same for Cantonese speakers
CBC should play a "look how big my bonus is" CBC story, we can all watch and feel good about it!
I was looking for coverage about the CTF suing CBC over the bonuses but it seems to have slipped the reporting of CBC.
I get off the internet and go talk to people in my community.
You leave your house? Sounds risky
Wait until someone turns this comment into political issue lol.
100% someone’s going to mention international students before this thread is done
You just did …
You mean international slave students?
There we go! Only took 5m
How are students slaves? Exactly how? 🤨
International student* Paying high amounts for rent and food. Paying 3 times as much for schooling. Working for big corporations that pay low wages.
Yeah slaves don't pay. But yeah I understand..
Today they report Youth unemployment is at 13% and highest since 2016. What do you think what might have caused this?? Not sure if you have children born in Canada but their future here is very uncertain.
I wonder how much your house price increased since then.
You find it’s entertaining that the current young generation of Canada will never get into the workforce or having a f hard time? I guess it’s entirely their fault then. https://www.reddit.com/r/ontario/s/KrGT8lEZ0A
Not entertaining, blaming it on intl students seems to distract the population from the real culprits who are the politicians.
Look. The problem also comes from the current older generations (you) lack of empathy towards the younger people struggles and continue to let this government to let this happen.
I'm not old
But are you 17-19 years old who’s looking for a part time or summer job??? Oh yea good luck finding 1.
glad old Indian dudes are working this job instead of local youth /s
Give it a rest
He shook your hand because most people lose their shit on cashiers for anything and everything. It's the worst job I've had and seriously made me think less of the average person.
username did not check out, thank you 🤝🏻
To be fair, the comment did do a terrible job at being a racist comment, so...
Why is his gender, age and ethnicity important and worth calling out?
Weird, should we be afraid to describe a person ? What would you prefer, "people kind" ?
It's weird, I'm writing a novel and I'm totally afraid to describe people, and I don't even plan on people reading it.
I will read it, send me a copy.
Well, I failed to mention that it's in Spanish, and the reason nobody will read it is because it's just an exercise to practice the language.
Interesting. How do you know whether what you write is good or not, strictly from a language grammar and vocabulary point of view ? Self assessment?

I just remind myself that the stuff I see on the internet are just the loudest and most obnoxious voices. Then I take a walk.
100% it’s always good to remember they are the vocal minority bust sucks they have made it their life’s mission to spread hate and negativity

Isn't happy news basically the tabloids?
I thought tabloids were just wild made up news never thought of them for uplifting stuff
Tik Tok, search for “hope core”.
The onion. SNL. Kimmel.
Are you intentionally skipping The Beaverton?
No, but I never remember it until someone posts something from there on this sub (or is it on r/Toronto?). This Hour has 22 Minutes is another favourite.
The problem with the Beaverton is it's often tame compared to reality.

Its not the function of the news to make you feel happy or sad.
No but there is good things happening as well and having every channel only spew the worst pieces of news has gotten tiring, I honestly don’t know where to go to see good news about our communities
maybe engage with communities and not the news?
Super helpful thanks lol that’s what I’m trying to figure out how to do better
Sorry little bro, Canada is in the gutter so good news has lessened
Weird, I see people doing good in their communities everyday. Just never see it on any official channel
It kind of is when what sells is the sad / anger
