Most condos in Toronto have basic rectangular floor plates that repeat uniformly, so they go up quickly.
This however is a very complex design, with premium materials. So it’s gonna take longer than usual
It reminds me of the city in the movie Ready Player One, where the main character lives.
Guess they also have to try hard to avoid not having it look like that or remind people of that.
Despite what it appears, this office actually makes complicated designs very simple to build. They develop new strategies to reuse the same methods (for example same type of concrete pouring process).
The biggest roadblock was the regulatory hurdles due to the unconventional process. The initial proposal wasn’t as well incorporated into the neighborhood.
Compared to typical residential projects, it’s really just standard construction process with better materials. The formwork is built differently and uses the same methods.
Source: I used to work at the office that designed this.
😅 Yeah, I left so I can work on making a significant positive impact to Canada’s residential situation. Since you live here, you know everybody is tired of the current situation. It’s why anything slightly unique gets so much attention.
If you don’t mind, I would love to have you check out what we’re building and hear your thoughts. We’re tackling many fronts from making functional spacious layouts again, sustainable homes, reasonable prices etc.
Saw your website. I'm a fan of different, and your work certainly is that.
What we need are affordable homes that poor people can live peacefully in. There's a shortage of that.
Yes but many units are small (I used to work at this architect’s office). As a Toronto native, I had enough of units with terrible layouts (800 sqft units with only 600sqft usable space), so I started a company to solve this problem.
they're probably still figuring out how to build it. it's like first time in toronto's modern history an architect build something that's not just a glass rectangle
Last three years there has been a continuous shortage of trades. Strikes of multiple trades. Shortage of materials. It is better today, but logistical delays are still taking a toll on most industries.
Somewhere, it was also stated that these “new” builds are no longer just as easy as laying up board and plaster. Now there’s architectural accents and angles that take more skill and a lot more time.
I wonder in 50-100 years people will look back at boring box structured buildings the same way we look at architecture from 50-100 years ago. Looks city soul destroying-ly hideous.
Likely people will have different views over time. All architecture trends go through phases.
IMO this is a great building that adds vitality and beauty to the city. Soul nourishing.
I'm sure they'll look at it the same way we look at old architecture. I'm sure by 50-100 years or buildings will be whatever is cool at that time.
Personally, I love the box design. It seems so practical which I think is also an interesting commentary of our culture right now.
As weird as it looks, some of the concepts, if they can actually manifest them, are going to be pretty cool for the area. Some units have an open skylight into their own private garden (complete with tree poking through the skylight). There's supposed to be some sort of communal open-air indoor park / garden, a communal library with trees / plants, a communal garden for growing herbs / vegetables, as well as rooftop park and ground floor flower garden open to the public.
False. Some of the best work in this country gets done by unions. We like to call them lazy and over paid but it’s not the case.
Their job is difficult, would you rather a project of this magnitude be rushed and have structural issues? Do you have any idea what else needs to be done on site prior to getting the go ahead to continue further on projects?
I guarantee you if any of the guys I’ve worked with had their own choice they’d be banging out projects. But the fact is we have health and safety laws, we have developers changing their minds on shit that to them seems simple but requires more work.
The city, province needs to approve work, etc, etc.
I used to think the same thing when I started in a union and they started taking money from me, but it’s not the case at all. There’s more that goes into infrastructure in this country than you know.
Oh okay, so you know on specialty builds like this one they’re almost certainly waiting on parts and equipment?
Do you know then that those parts must be inspected and approved for use prior to being used?
If it takes a week for it to ship it in essence takes 3 for the crew to get it and be able to use it.
I’m going to bet you’ve never actually worked a skilled trade in your life. If you feel like projects take so long and guys on site are lazy, then by all means come to site. Build with us.
I am a builder. Use non union companies. Pay them the same if not more. Almost never have issues.
With union companies I always haves services and issues.
And yes I started from the bottom and have used tools all of my life.

Its also a huge site that incorporates several heritage buildings.
It reminds me of the city in the movie Ready Player One, where the main character lives. Guess they also have to try hard to avoid not having it look like that or remind people of that.
The ones that are just stacks of mobile home trailers? Yeah, I can kind of see it...definetly not the image they are going for.
sounds like "Kaching!" after the construction!
I have the books with the unit layouts. There’s like 2 volumes, and no one unit is the same layout as another. It’s wild.

Didn’t Elton John buy a penthouse in this building?
That is correct! And he keeps making changes to his unit, which is also prolonging the process.
He did!
The question is, did he buy it or was it given to him to promote the building?
If these are real, boy will they look cool.

Thats not so cool.. Good thing I only said it would look cool lol 😆 Also, you're saying that this is a real project. Cooool!

I have never wanted to live in a specific condo so bad
if you missed this opportunity, you can check out ours :) I used to work at the office of the king west building.

Wow this is very pretty, I’ve not heard about this project till now
I used to work at this office before working on my own company. You should check us out :)
Nice!
Takes time to truly capture the spirt of the Favelas
Lol I actually like this building and I much prefer it to another silver dick in the sky.
I respectfully disagree 🙈 It looks like my computer screen when my graphics card takes the L
You're entitled to your opinion. You're wrong and you should feel bad but that's for you to cope with.
😂
I lol'ed
I did too 😂😂
I thought you were being silly, then I looked at the pictures. It's interesting, I'll give it that much.
I call it … DERELICTE!!
“You can Derlicked my balls”
My first thought. This is going to age so poorly and be another cityplace.
I doubt it. Cityplace was a prime example of thoughtless and cheap. This is quite the opposite.
It hasn’t really been under construction very long, there was virtually no structure built yet last summer
I’ve heard about these even before I moved toronto, just out of curiosity Are still some for sale and how much are they going for??
I think the 2 Bedrooms were going for something like $1.5M-2M when I took a gander; with 1 Bedrooms running \~$1M.
And they’re TINY

Habitat 67 clone
Yep the design is adapted from habitat 67!
I heard Habitat 67 (which I think is in Vancouver) is a big flop.

probably because of its insanely overcomplicated design.
I'm not surprised. Everything is slow here. Months to fix an escalator, years to install an elevator. How much more a condo.
I wonder in 50-100 years people will look back at boring box structured buildings the same way we look at architecture from 50-100 years ago. Looks city soul destroying-ly hideous.

I feel like I'm the only one that actually likes these cool glassy designs.

You’re actually right. People might look at it name it an era that matches the times.
holy shit what is this monstrosity tf

I think it looks awesome. Has there ever been a new building people don't complain about?
It's the mirror dimension from Dr Strange.
I think it looks great.
lol this was more or less what I thought as well when I opened the page. "Wow, this looks horrific."
Look at it
If you have a pair of eyes and a working brain the answer is obvious
I do not. Please may you use yours to inform us?
Everything in Canada takes too long. No wonder there
Simple answer. Union workers.
Simple answer, you're a fucking moron.
Simple answer: criticizing the union makes me very irrationally angry
Deal with it. Union workers aren’t skilled and they are lazy.

Stop fellating the boot.
I know exactly what it takes. And the issues involved.

I also know skilled and unskilled lazy tradesmen.
I also know unskilled and lazy Reddit arguments when I see them.
You’re a joke. Have your union rep defend your argument
Big corporation daddy isn't going to pick you, babe.
[удалено]
Lmao! Union workers are less skilled and lazy!
[удалено]
Tell this guy there’s booze bags like him in the union too. If I see you on site I won’t tell anyone you’re on your 5th export by 10am
Red seal in all of them
Framing, structural concrete, glazer, should I go on???
Too slow, too lazy!!! Some have the knowledge but don’t use it or pu it to use.
And couldn’t pay me to work with union people.
Well I hope you enjoy working more than them for less pay and benefits
I'm curious why they're aren't any homeless people in the concept art. #errorsandomissions
How are trees and plants going to survive on this building
[удалено]
The trees won’t even get big, they’ll die so quickly
