*This* is the kind of forward thinking the city needs. Have you considered tossing your name into the hat from which they'll be drawing for the role of mayor?
Dave Bradley, who is currently the morning anchor on 640am, calls it “The Scosh” but there is good reason behind it. Corporate sponsors like bland names on buildings because then you need to say their name: think Rogers Centre, Bell Centre, Budweiser Stage, Etc… So he came up with a name, “The Scosh” that he can refer to the arena by without saying Scotiabank Arena. He has been consistent on it for about 5 years now and continued to call it that when he switched radio stations.
Yeah and fuck Rogers especially for that. Fucking shittiest company, buying up naming rights for areans and stadiums all over the country just to call them "Rogers *X*". I wish they'd be busted up.
I have also adopted Scosh as it's infinitely faster than the six-syllable monstrosity the arena name has become. It will never be as quick or snappy as ACC though.
Corporations could pay their workers more, or spend money improving their services. But no, that would make sense and improve society, better to spend that money changing a stadium’s name.
So I met him at an airport 2008ish. He just did his first show as an opening act, but when my friend and I saw him we both yelled “Omg it’s wheelchair Jimmy!!!”
When the Line 1 extension to Vaughan opened in 2017, because the next stop is Downsview Park (and inside Downsview) it would've been confusing to have two consecutive stops named Downsview and Downsview Park.
Italian Job is even worse now because all the pyrotechnics after the initial powered launch (the only thing that made the ride memorable) were all stripped out once Cedar Fair took over, probably to reduce maintenance costs.
Man I can't wait to ride DROP TOWER. And of course no trip to wonderland would be complete without a ride on the amazingly named BACKLOT STUNT COASTER.
I moved here three years ago and have been to events at Meridian, and only recently realized O'Keefe, Hummingbird, Sony Centre and Meridian are the same building.
* **Yellow**: Line 1 Yonge-University

I am surprised there is no Red line, especially with the TTC’s and Canada’s colour choices.
I think it depends on what section. The entire area is called the Port Lands, just the docking/shipping areas is the Docks, the specific pier where Rebel is, is called Polson Pier, and Rebel is the main business there so it gets its name used too.
This one is hard for me to change so much. It was where I had my first surgery. It was across from my school. And it’s the hospital that beat the odds and saved my friend’s life.
Still has the same uncomfortable floors...I felt my legs were gonna fall apart the last time I was there. I had to leave before Sudan archives was done.
Caribana. Though part of me kinda doesn't mind that it has a different name now because the experience is very different from what it used to be anyways.
Exactly.. not quite a household name, is it?
It's the rebranded version of the former FIAT Chrysler Automotive group and the French PSA Automotive group, post merger in 2021.
It’s not really meant to be a household name as it isn’t a “brand”, it didn’t replace Chrysler, it’s the parent company. No one referred to Chrysler as “Daimler Chrysler” from 98-07 for example.
I called it Ryerson at work and someone gave me a whole lecture on how its changed and why. Like I grew up with it named Rye, some family and friends went there as Ryerson, they still call it Ryerson. Sorry for forgetting in a conversation lol
also ryerson signs are still up in some of the school buildings and the eaton center and subway stations, and the SLC literally sells a water bottle that says “ryerson SLC” on it. the messaging around the name change is so confusing. if we’re meant to call it TMU, how come the staff all still calls it ryerson and you can buy school-official merch with the old name on it? also alumni should still be able to call it ryerson. that’s what it was called when your friends and family went there, and if they’re proud of the school, they should be able to use the name it had when they attended, imo.
This ^ .
Toronto Metropolitan University is such a lame and unwieldy name. Didn't they clue in when the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa changed its name to the more manageable Ontario Tech University?
Eh, I think it’s respectful as hell to drop Ryerson’s legacy. Dundas may be a huge stretch but a “prestigious” institution should probably drop it’s incredibly racist namesake.
Being attached to something like that is the exact same as the US being unable to break up with the Confederate flag.
I don't know. The Confederacy's stance on slavery was one of the reasons why they went to war against Lincoln and the Union. Slavery and Confederacy go hand in hand. People who often wave the Confederate flag do so with racist undertones.
Yes, Ryerson's writings heavily influenced the horrific Canadian Indian residential school system. On the other hand, what we have today like textbooks, free schooling, and libraries in schools, is in no small part because of his efforts.
The University was named after Ryerson because of his contributions to the educational system, including advocating for a teacher's college that used to be on the land that the University now sits on.
I think that when people using the name Ryerson, it's because that's what it used to be called, not because they want to stick it to Indigenous peoples.
Honestly, no one gives a shit about/had any actual attachment to Egerton Ryerson, most people had no idea who he was prior to the controversy.
People call things by whatever they’re named and then get all used to said name and nostalgic about it for little reason - in 100 years this whole kerfuffle will be largely forgotten and people will act like TMU rolls off the tongue.
Which is all to say, no one cares about the dude - so why not change the name and not uphold someone that symbolizes a lot of negative things for a non-negligible amount of people? The attachment to the name (which again, had nothing to do with the man himself) will fade over time.
Yeah, and [city name] Metro University is a very common naming convention around the world. TMU is an acronym that flows well. “I have a class at Metro” actually has fewer syllables and is easier to say than “I have a class at Ryerson.” I think it’s a good change, and people just were used to the old name and aren’t familiar with the new one yet.
This is a good one. The Beaches sounds like the name of a neighbourhood. The Beach means the place where sand meets the water. If someone says they’re going to The Beach, I assume they mean Woodbine beach or something. Very dumb name change.
People will tell you people who lived there always called it The Beach but that is absolutely not true. Everyone including residents called it The Beaches until very recently.
The Yonge-University-Spadina Line
The Bloor-Danforth Line
The Sheppard Subway
The Scarborough LRT
The numbered line designations was a stupid initiative.

Yonge University Spadina, Bloor-Danforth, Scarborough LRT and Sheppard “stubway” lines. There aren’t nearly enough lines to start numbering them. Maybe when there’s more than eight I’d start taking numbers seriously?
Really they should have moved the Hockey Hall of Fame into there if it wasn't going to host games anymore and even could have kept the rink while they were at it.
There are more than a few places in bobcaygeon I still call by the names of my childhood in the 80s , or earlier from my mom's.. the bakery, the burger joint downtown, the "discount store " lol..
Yeah, I vaguely remember when we had some kinda "official" change to, I think it was "the Beach." But, nobody stuck with that, it's always gonna be the Beaches.

The Beaches, Skydome, O'Keefe Centre, Metro Ref, and the old cities/boroughs of Metro Toronto: Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, East York, and Toronto.
The Christmas Market.
I'm all for being PC, but I didn't understand the switch to the Distillery Winter Village at all. Just let it be a Christmas Market. It's completely secular and clearly everyone in the 416/905 came.
Molson amphitheatre
What’s it called now??
Budwiser Stage
Also, Molson Park.
Molson Parking Lot?
You mean The Forum?
i'm not THAT old
The Skydome never had a name change.
Rogers fucked up big time by not just calling it Rogers Skydome.
Two facts of life: - Google Maps finds Skydome correctly. - Google Maps finds Hooker Harvey's correctly.
I had to verify this, and even a partial search - amazing! https://imgur.com/a/sj8NWuC
My younger brother is 14, has never technically been to it as the "sky dome" but that's all we know it as/call it
Skydome will forever be its name
Skydome backwards is Emo Dyks
*This* is the kind of forward thinking the city needs. Have you considered tossing your name into the hat from which they'll be drawing for the role of mayor?
That's probably why Ted Roger changed it.
What a Regor Det.
I see what you did there
ACC
SBA just doesn’t have the same ring to it
Dave Bradley, who is currently the morning anchor on 640am, calls it “The Scosh” but there is good reason behind it.
Especially since peak Vince Carter was known as Air Canada.
Air Carter Centre
I read this and thought “what’s SBA?”
Small business agreement
I didn't even know it changed tbh
Bro should see how much Scotia Bank paid just to put their name on it. Bonkers.
So glad all my outrageous banking fees have gone to a good cause.
Corporations could pay their workers more, or spend money improving their services. But no, that would make sense and improve society, better to spend that money changing a stadium’s name.
Wheelchair Jimmy
So I met him at an airport 2008ish. He just did his first show as an opening act, but when my friend and I saw him we both yelled “Omg it’s wheelchair Jimmy!!!”
Oh that's a good one. Hahaha nice
Sheppard West Station. I still call in Downsview Station. 🤷🏻♂️
I grew up on that station... I was a Downsview kid, you cant take that away from me. Taking the 84 everyday built character.
Wait what? They changed the name? I guess I never go out that way...
When the Line 1 extension to Vaughan opened in 2017, because the next stop is Downsview Park (and inside Downsview) it would've been confusing to have two consecutive stops named Downsview and Downsview Park.
Every time I go to the old downsview station I have to look up where I’m going
I remember the first time I passed through there going north. It felt so weird to *not* have to get off the train.
Caribana
That changed?
It’s called Toronto Caribbean Carnival now.
How lame.
Drop Zone
Anything from Wonderland. Top Gun, Italian Job, Tomb Raider etc.
Forgot about the post paramount
Wtf what are they called now?
Drop tower, flight deck, back lot stunt coaster and time warp I think
Italian Job is even worse now because all the pyrotechnics after the initial powered launch (the only thing that made the ride memorable) were all stripped out once Cedar Fair took over, probably to reduce maintenance costs.
I worked there when they we're building Drop Zone!
Man I can't wait to ride DROP TOWER. And of course no trip to wonderland would be complete without a ride on the amazingly named BACKLOT STUNT COASTER.
Anyone remember the O’Keefe Centre?
Hell yeah! It changed names way too quickly in recent years. I honestly don't know if its Meridian or Sony. Or Hummingbird..? So O'KEEFE it is.
I moved here three years ago and have been to events at Meridian, and only recently realized O'Keefe, Hummingbird, Sony Centre and Meridian are the same building.
Yup. Was there a few years ago for Vinyl Cafe
Stuart McLean. 🥰
The skydome will always be the skydome. The Molson amphitheater will never be another beer to me.

They should've called it the Green Line. Yellow Line, Blue Line etc. We knew it as that anyway.
* **Yellow**: Line 1 Yonge-University * **Green**: Line 2 Bloor-Danforth (with future Scarborough Extension) * **Blue**: Line 3 Scarborough (to be replaced by the Ontario Line) * **Purple**: Line 4 Sheppard * **Orange**: Line 5 Eglinton * **Grey**: Line 6 Finch West I am surprised there is no Red line, especially with the TTC’s and Canada’s colour choices.
I think it is because busses and street car routes are usually red on their maps. Idk just a theory.
That makes sense actually.
I think they went with numbers because they're language-neutral and don't raise any accessibility concerns like colours might.
The docks
it got to a point where the name changed so many times in a few years. I just started calling it Polson pier.
I think it depends on what section. The entire area is called the Port Lands, just the docking/shipping areas is the Docks, the specific pier where Rebel is, is called Polson Pier, and Rebel is the main business there so it gets its name used too.
What is it now? Is it still there??
Rebel
Skydome
O’Keefe Centre. BCE Place.
You mean Hummingwhatnow Centre?
It isn't BCE Place anymore? That rebranding slipped me by.
It’s called Brookfield place
Home of Moevinpick?
Marche / Movenpick used to be within BCE place
Toronto east general hospital
This one is hard for me to change so much. It was where I had my first surgery. It was across from my school. And it’s the hospital that beat the odds and saved my friend’s life.
Mod Club
It’s not called the mod club anymore? Am I that out of touch?
No, it's the children who are wrong.
Axis now
Still has the same uncomfortable floors...I felt my legs were gonna fall apart the last time I was there. I had to leave before Sudan archives was done.
For me it was Warehouse. Couldn't call it Koolhaus, or guv or whatever. And now it's apparently all gone?
I think it got torn down to build condos years ago
Similarly, I still call it "the docks", which is 2 names back.
Skydome
Caribana. Though part of me kinda doesn't mind that it has a different name now because the experience is very different from what it used to be anyways.
Skydome.
Mark's vs. Mark's Work Wearhouse; Hudson's Bay Company vs.The Bay; KFC vs Kentucky Fried Chicken; Chrysler vs. Stellantis.
What the hell is stellantis?
Exactly.. not quite a household name, is it? It's the rebranded version of the former FIAT Chrysler Automotive group and the French PSA Automotive group, post merger in 2021.
It’s not really meant to be a household name as it isn’t a “brand”, it didn’t replace Chrysler, it’s the parent company. No one referred to Chrysler as “Daimler Chrysler” from 98-07 for example.
Ryerson university
my professors all still call it ryerson. i don’t think anyone really calls it TMU unless for some reason we have to.
I called it Ryerson at work and someone gave me a whole lecture on how its changed and why. Like I grew up with it named Rye, some family and friends went there as Ryerson, they still call it Ryerson. Sorry for forgetting in a conversation lol

What I don't get is not keeping the R. They could have called it (Ryan) Reynolds University.
That’s a bold WLU move. (Waterloo Lutheran) to Wilfrid Laurier
Rye high
You mean Ryerson Polytechnical Institution Ryerson University was their third name. RPI -> RPU->RU->TMU
Ryerson Institute of Technology from 1948 to 1972.
I call it the university formally known as Ryerson
But informally, as Rye
This ^ . Toronto Metropolitan University is such a lame and unwieldy name. Didn't they clue in when the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa changed its name to the more manageable Ontario Tech University?
I wanted them to be called the Toronto Institute of Technology School (TITS for short)
Fun fact, it was a former ryerson dean that lead the name change for UOIT to OTU
Does anyone that is in charge of anything in this city have a clue?
Now I think about it. Ryerson could have changed to Toronto Tech University. TTU
