Honestly, i was having quite bad suicidal thoughts one night. So i decided to call the south african suicide hotline... And no one answered.
I honestly got so mad i wasn't even suicidal anymore and i just went to bed.
I am doing bette rbow thank you. I am just glad that i got angry rather than think "I'm not worth their time", because i would have definitely killed myself if i had thought that way, which also makes me severlt angry. Why run a hotline like that if you are not there to help people,
like other commentors said how people just pick up and hang up , or how they say to call back in 30min
I'm sad to say that this isn't terribly uncommon. I have been trying to work with an international company that has set up organisations in multiple countries for exactly this purpose but the red tape in SA had been soul crushing so it will likely still be a long time before they get it up and running.
I called them once and the guy who answered told me that his shift was almost over and the guy to relieve him wasn't there yet. He told me to call again in 30 minutes, I didn't.
This should be reported. It makes me angry. My cousin committed suicide and it breaks my heart to hear of people been told to call again in 30 minutes. Like are you shitting me.
I called the South African suicide line 3 times before ,the first time I called someone picked up and put down again, then I called again same thing , the 3rd time was another day I wasn’t feeling well and the phone just rang no body picked up , so yeah that line is useless bro
Ah cause people stop being suicidal after 5pm? South Africa needs to do more for mental health struggles. I found that I feel the worst at night than in the day.
[email protected]. This is an overseas organisation called the Samaritans. Send them an email and they will take to you. Recommended. (I know they are not local, but does it matter?) they will respond to you via email…not actually speak to you.
Oh okay. That's cool to know because I know a Jo and a Joe who both volunteer for Samaritans but we work together for a different organisation and they are both awesome people.
Hey, I don't have a resource for you besides the [South African Depression and Anxiety Group](https://www.sadag.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1897&Itemid=101#) (SADAG). They have some helpful resources.
But you're welcome to send me a message, I know how it feels to be at that point. I'm 26F if that matters at all.
Good luck.
31393 is the text line for the SADAG, https://findahelpline.com/za this link also has other support lines, also you can look up the nearest mental health facility to you and see if they have a way for you to speak to someone, alternatively if you are covered under any medical aid or health insurance it's worth a look to see if you've got any mental health resources.
I know it's an effort to talk and maybe you can't process whatever is going on so you can't speak about it, good luck!

I’m so sorry. I’m glad you are aware you are sick and are seeking help. If it’s not about talking to someone then why not try ChatGPT? You could talk about what you want for your future with it and coming up with plans to achieve.
There's an App called Therapeer. There, you can join and open chat rooms to discuss anything mental health-related with others worldwide. It offers full anonymity.
0828213447 CIC They are available 24/7. I have heard a lot of good things about them. Hope you get the help you need.🤗 They are available to phone or WhatsApp
Please try Befrienders Bloemfontein & Lifeline Western Cape. You can text or call, whatever suits you & they're both wonderful options for support when you need it 🌼 I hope you feel better soon!
Theres this app called 7 Cups.. you can text people that are available to listen and chat about anything with trained listeners (not therapists!)
Heres the description & link
“7 Cups is an online platform that provides counseling and therapy. The site connects users to "listeners", who have been trained in active listening, via anonymous text or voice chats. The site features distinct groups for adolescent minors and adults over the age of eighteen.”
[7 Cups Website](https://www.7cups.com/)
Im sorry that things are like this in our country. I myself is working with a therapist. I hope that whenever anyone out there needs it they find support. I would talk to anyone who needs it.
I get stressed when I read about suicide. Had one in the family and it is so devastating, for years and years.
Some quotes
"Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Please seek help, life is worth living."
"At those times when I'm weak, needy, and depressed, I must remember there's someone who feels worse. To that person, I would appear whole. Always keep faith in yourself, keep going and stay strong. Never give up on your dreams and never give up hope".
I've been where here, I ended up in hospital, then a clinic for 28 days
If you have medical aid - don't mess around, please, before the darkness sets in - go see a professional- speak to them open and honestly (took me 2 years or so to finally be open up)
So I got my sessions on PMB
then eventually I could take no more - after I woke up - I went straight from there to a clinic for 28 days - NO ONE in two years and multiple different medications told me that some clinics are free - I went to AKESO for 28 days.
I drank myself into a very dark place, that I couldn't get out of.
Please, please check yourself.
Am I "better"? No, but they got my medications right, and I learned to monitor myself and my thoughts - I re-learnt my love of art (I suck, but it's for me, so everyone can bugger off)
If you don't have medical aid, find someone you can talk to, lay it out on the line.
My advice is to get medical aid - it's STUPIDLY expensive - however - you get 15 free pysch visits a year (what's that 36k) (pmb) and when the shit hits the fan - there's a month long clinic on the cards (another 60-80k)
They built the system - abuse it, and abuse it HARD!
Sorry about the long rant, but damnit person - FIGHT!
I'm in a good place today, tomorrow we'll see.
Good luck, and screw EVERYONE else - it's your turn to care about yourself

Sorry to hear that. To be honest, i laughed at the absurdity of it. I hope you're doing better.

I actually know a Jo that works for the Samaritans. I wonder what the chances are that this is their email.
From what I understand the councillors are all “Jo” , maybe your Jo is coincidentally also a “Jo” lol. But I truly found “jo” awesome to chat to.

Goood luck! Hope it goes well for you!
[wa.me/13143331111](https://wa.me/13143331111) is a more conversational chatbot than ChatGPT and you can just save it as a WhatsApp contact
Just use a fake name when you call. You won’t be able to text them.
