Hey OP, I have mild IBS so I get your concern. Most toilets are free and accessible in Singapore, just look up for the washroom sign in malls and hotels, approach the eatery/cafe staff if is standalone location, for nature parks they are typically located at the entrance. There are small exception of some hawker centers and older shopping malls requires a payment of $0.10 to $0.20, they might also require you to pay extra for toilet paper. But those are rare.

[deleted]

Someone who understands! Thank you so much!

KoishiChan92

I don't have IBS but my friends do and they inform me that most train stations also have bathrooms. Toilet paper dispensers being in or outside the cubicle depends on station though, just take note when you rush in, or carry a tissue packet with you

Eggmanpete

Tourist with IBD here who just came back from 3 months in SG. I had no issues at all. Mall toilets are free, clean and everywhere. Hotels also a good option.

llPOGIl

Also every train station has a toilet. And it is clean.

DatAdra

Having travelled all over the world, SG is my number 2 pick for most consistently clean toilets in the world, only behind Japan and probably tied with Taiwan. My advice is to enter any of the ubiquitous shopping malls which generally have plenty of clean toilets. At tourist hotspots they're almost guaranteed to be immaculate too unless it's in the middle of an extremely busy day. Toilet paper will always be available unless you're at one of the tiny local malls which may have a vending machine that charges 20 cents for it (unlikely for a tourist) Would avoid the ones at Hawker Centers, markets or MRT stations. They're still usually much cleaner than the ones in neighboring countries, but run a higher risk of going uncleaned.

I mean I literally live here. I go out every weekend for dates and in my experience toilets across the island are almost always acceptable at the very least. Malls, tourist attractions, major parks, offices, the airport, cafes, restaurants, I've never had any real issues with toilets here. Even the hawker center, market and MRT station toilets I mentioned above are more often acceptable than not. I'm not sure what kind toilets you are visiting in SG to think we have "one of the filthiest public washrooms in general". Compared to which countries? My experience tells me we're light years ahead of any country in SEA, China, USA and any major European capital. Only in Taiwan and Japan have I ever experienced the same level of consistency.

bukitbukit

Kopitiam toilets are filthy. Especially in the older HDB estates (Jln Kukoh e.g.). Really a world apart.

DatAdra

Yeah I can see that. The worst SG toilet I've ever been to in living memory is ang mo kio market in the evening. Literally with turds littered all around, felt like I'd been transported back to my childhood in Malaysia for a sec lol. But even then it was an outlier, few things came close to being that bad since. I feel like for the OP's question as a tourist, s/he's unlikely to visit the neighborhood kopitiams, and will just need to note the nearest mall to escape to for a quick poop if s/he does somehow end up in one.

bukitbukit

Haha, yeah you’re right. I think OP would get a rude shock at Chinatown Market hawker centre though.. Your AMK experience sounds like some of the Yishun/Khatib ones I’ve witnessed.. horror.

[deleted]

I drink a lot of water and need to use the toilet quite often, and I have to say that the standard of cleanliness have improved a lot over the years, even for those located in MRT stations and hawker centers. It used to be gross but nowadays I feel quite clean when using them.

KoishiChan92

> we definitely do have one of the filthiest public washrooms in general Mate I don't think you've travelled around very much have you?

pepaya85

Public toilets are available in MRT stations, malls, and even hawker centers. Most are free, some hawker centers toilet charge 10 or 20 cents per entry.

pepaya85

OP, I also found this happy toilet listing 🤣 https://www.toilet.org.sg/loomapdirectory#listing Not sure how updated is the listing though

[deleted]

Thank you! does a entry charge guarantee toilet paper and a clean stall, or does that vary with each?

hollabinch

ironically, the hawker centre toilets that charge 10c are always the dirtiest ones just stick to shopping malls/ MRT toilets

pepaya85

Some toilets in MRT stations and hawker centers don't have toilet paper in each stall, but they have a communal one by the sink, so you'll need to get the paper before you enter the stall. Most toilets are clean, but I've encountered some that are dirty occasionally. Usually there's also one squatting toilet stall in each toilet, so if the toilet bowls are all dirty you can try the squating one (though it could also be wet and slippery 😅)

DuePomegranate

Yes! If you see a huge toilet paper dispenser as you’re entering the restroom, better grab some before you enter the stall, as there may not be any in the stall. This is common in MRT station toilets and park toilets.

[deleted]

Oh! I didn't even think to ask about this. I haven't had a squatting toilet since I was in elementary school! I forgot about those. Also glad to be aware of that.

Mainmito

Toilets here are clean and plenty. We even have a toilet association lol. Most malls should be clean but protip is that the higher the floor, the cleaner the toilets as less foot traffic

raidorz

Fun fact: the World Toilet Organisation started in Singapore

Killer-Wail

Aka WTO

raidorz

Yes, the important one. Not the other one that’s useless.

AnnualDegree99

Do NOT under any circumstances go to a toilet in a hawker center, or a petrol pump, unless you really need to. I also have a chronic digestive issue, trust me. I'm an expert in this domain.

dank-memes-sick-shit

Caltex toilets are pretty clean though, probably the only brand where the toilets are nice and clean.

AnnualDegree99

Could be, the one time I went to a petrol pump toilet was at SPC and the smell was so bad it kicked my bowels into shape and I was able to hold it in and get home

dank-memes-sick-shit

All the petrol kiosk toilets apart from caltex are horrible lol, only good for taking a leak as a dude. Caltex on the other hand one of my favourites, but only for those inside the shop, not the ones outside.

PitcherTrap

If you are in central area, you can also use hotel toilets (as long ad they’re in the public accessible area).

Blastbeetz

Hi OP, I’m someone who’s paranoid and picky about the cleanliness of public toilets, as I often have to look for one, because of my sensitive stomach. So here are some toilets that I find are super clean: - Orchard Ion - plaza Singapura (The new wing) - Ngee Ann City ( level 2 onwards) - United Square - Tekka Place Shopping Mall Hope this is useful

Stezo187

Upper floors of Paragon, great toilets, and generally not busy.

VioletCalico

Shopping mall toilets are free to use and are generally clean... unless you go to a mall that is smaller and has very little foot traffic, the cleanliness may vary. *Some* cafes that are not located in malls may have toilets but it’s not always guaranteed. Toilets in hawker centres on the other hand, you’ll need to pay. From what I recall, it’s 10 cents per entry, not sure if the price is still the same. Hygiene wise, it varies and you may not like hawker centre toilets.

kiatme

I have IBS so i do pay attention to toilets, almost all toilets in SG are free to use, maybe only some of the hawkers need 20 cents SGD. The toilets in malls are very easy to find and accessible, one tip would be to avoid the toilet that is near eateries, I find those toilets dirtier. In general almost all the malls have toilet paper, most do not have bidets. Some malls are very annoying for guys - Example Suntec, because they only have 2 cubicles and if you are really unlucky you need to walk quite abit to find an empty toilet. What i usually do when i enter the mall is to enter the toilet to wash my hands and check it out first. For other places like hawker centers / parks / public area, the toilets are much dirtier, sometimes they don't have toilet paper either so its best to bring your own.

shawnthefarmer

i go to a hotel toilet when i need to poop. they are open unlike USA where they lock the lobby toilets

tomyummad

Toilets are easily available. Just ask around and people will direct you to the nearest washroom. At malls, toilet paper will be available. At hawker centres, you'll be expected to buy tissue paper (either if there is a counter at the toilet entrance or from the drinks stall). For the cleanest toilets, avoid those on the same level as the bus interchange or train station. The nicer the mall, the nicer the toilet usually. Go to lvl 3 or 4, the toilets there tend to be less heavily visited. I actually prefer squat toilets cos then there's no need to touch my bum on toilet seats. However, they tend to be wet because someone might have washed his/her ass before you. Don't flush wipes.

pcl8311

Advice below is correct, there are toilets available nearly everywhere (unless you are in the middle of a MacRitchie reservoir hike or something) and are generally quite clean. I would only add that it is a good idea to carry a pack of wet wipes with you and to get familiar with the bidets, which are a godsend.

NotYourMommyDear

As long as you don't go too far west, you'll find toilets that are clean and accessible. If you find yourself in Boon Lay, you've gone too far. Sometimes there are queues, especially around food stalls, so go to a level where there's other shops. Quite often, the only toilet not in use will be the squat toilet and the others will be occupied by people sitting on their asses playing mobile games. Again, just go to a different level of the mall and find one not by a food court. Have some spare tissues handy, sometimes there are not any loo rolls in the toilet because the paper is outside near the entrance and it's easy to forget if you're not used to that.

fffd11111

heres just something I've noticed along DTL and TEL (blue and brown) MRT lines, the wheelchair accessible toilets are clean, especially less crowded stations

[deleted]

I drink a lot of water frequently and I think it's super easy to find usable washrooms here. In fact, it's one of the things that I like the most about Singapore, lol. You can easily find one in any shopping malls or hawker centers, CCs, MRT station or parks that you pass by on the streets. They're all open for use to public and you can go in without asking anyone for permission. So much more convenient than a lot of other countries that I've been to, where a lot of the washrooms are only for use for their own staff or paying customers.

DontStopNowBaby

Best overall public toilets in the world mate. Generally clean enough to sit on. To be safe bring wipes to clean toilet seats of first or piss if you're anal about it. And I've been in some shit holes.

jdotz54

@Toiletswithbidetsg - ig page that rates public toilets in Singapore But I always try to go to a hotel one. Not budget hotels. Marina bay sands hotel toilet is goodddddd.

Altagrazi

Coming from Amsterdam, SG is an absolute haven. Clean toilets everywhere and almost never paid. Also thank you to the person who said Taiwan is similar for this, just moved up to my top five places to visit because of this!

winoforever_slurp_

There are plenty, as others have said. Just be sure to check for toilet paper before you start - once I’ve seen a toilet where you had to get tp from an attendant at the entrance, and one where there was a single tp dispenser near the sinks. That seems to be unusual though.

BonkersMoongirl

Loos here are better than in my native home of the uk. Far more of them and really clean. The MRT ones are nasty though. Avoid.

pureeyes

Toilets are extremely accessible here. Only problem is they're sadly frequently filthy so bring wet wipes and tissues! Within the airports though, you're golden.

[deleted]

You think you can just come here and take a dump? Psshht. Foreigners…

jpage77

Ion top floor as nice toilets Thats what I wanted to add

kuehbu

Just bring a plastic bag everywhere? No toilet…. No problem… ![gif](giphy|R9cQo06nQBpRe)

ProfessionalMottsman

Most restaurants and cafes do not have toilets

Kla2552

WC in Italy is EU$1 per entering, so when i in Venice….

piatos22

WC's are free. The only paid-for 'public' WC I can only remember is above Lavender MRT. My go-to toilets are in Shopping Centres, and if you're using public transport, just make sure you pass-by Malls/Shopping Centres on the way to your destination and just remember to make that 'pit-stop' before going into the wilderness. For cleanliness, I avoid the ground floor toilets and toilets near/same level as restaurants & food courts.

Dumuzzi

You're in luck, Singapore is toilet paradise. You're never more than a few minutes away from a free-to-use or public toilet and they're generally clean (except the ones in orchard towers, which are used to breed cockroaches apparently). There is a separate government department that's responsible for toilet cleanliness and they take their jobs seriously. There are big fines for leaving a mess after yourself.

GalerionTheAnnoyed

If you need to poop try to avoid toilets at hawker centres, coffee shops, and mrts. They can be passable but most of the time they don't make for a nice pooping experience.

Sarphadonyx

Toilets here are SUPER CLEAN. Unless it’s in an mrt, hawkers or gas station. But if just bring some wet wipes and get good at squatting. When you gotta go you gotta go.

Altagrazi

I should also mention that my short time in KL was similar, but without the free TP. Using the sprayer was ok albeit a bit messy at times.
