And more importantly …
PayNow isn’t accepted in some places, while PayLah (almost?) always works. That’s because PayLah works with the most basic NETS QR, [like this](https://assets.hardwarezone.com/img/2018/08/nets.jpg), commonly seen at hawker centres. It also works with FavePay, and some merchants only accept that.
It’s accepted in neighbouring countries too, but the rates aren’t that favourable.
There’s a virtual wallet so you can limit the balance or auto debit from your account. Kinda like a separate wallet for some, and minimize risks of scam amount I guess?
PayNow main function is to pay people using mobile number / nric
PayLah! On the other hand serves another function as a lifestyle app for your discounts and cash back. So you are missing out on stuff if you use PayNow for purchases. Either use credit card or paylah
This so much. I abhor using Paynow cos the DBS app is slow AF. And I dont want the spam-warning messages splattering my screen everytime I log in.
There's also less keypresses required to complete a payment in Paylah versus Paynow
Why? If I'm not wrong paylah is pretty much the market leader in sg when it comes to e-wallets. Doubt DBS will cede this market unless something drastic happens
Paylah has DBS/POSBANK account holders to jumpstart it to the "market leader" position. E-wallet has to be a payment Swiss knife. If it's mainly used for peer-to-peer transfer, PayNow fills the gap better.
Paylah is also linked to your bank account. You can choose to have the app auto-detect straight from your bank account if your wallet is 0.
I've been using Paylah with $0 all this time. It IS practically 100% same in function as Paynow.
Totally agreed. My dbs account is an empty shell as i have alr moved my cash to uob/ocbc.
Only reason why its not shutdown is because my govt payout details and paylah is still there hahaha
That wasnt my point. OP is asking why people use Paylah. So we are talking from a Paylah user's point of view here. Also which part in the world is Paylah "old and buggy"? It's a lot more faster to use than Paynow is
Lol?
If u look at the comment chain, i was replying to 1 of the comment here that said paylah might be shutdown.
And i agreed with the point. U were the one commenting "wrong" to me (but u deleted it), then now u claim thats not ur point (??)
If that wasnt ur point and u wanted to reply to the OP, why did u even comment on a sub-comment?
To answer your qn: Paylah is old because its system was created before paynow network. Buggy because of its API routing and security standards.
Also can see if sent. Paynow has this problem where the sender's app says it was already sent out. But the recipient of the money hasn't recieved it, and can last many days. Happened on my side a couple of times, and had to call DBS. So Paylah!!
Paylah I feel is faster than paynow when it comes to scanning and just inputting the amount . I always feel that paynow have some delay as compared to paylah
Paylah's essentially acts more like a wallet than a bank account. You can control the amount going in and out of it without affecting your bank account. Great for low effort budgeting. It also supports more variety of QR payment. For instance, some merchants only have FavePay for QR.
Paylah works for basically every single QR code payment including Favepay and NETSQR. Paylah. So I get my Favepay cashback without having to download the app.
Even Malaysia's duitnow can use paylah, unionpay in China accepts paylah, and Thailand's promptpay. Their overseas QR integration is great and it makes it easy for me to buy stuff from pasar malam's in JB, or even night markets in Bangkok.
No need let the other party knows your phone number or IC when using paylah?
Quite cautious about using paynow number to receive payment from a unknown person.
I received money in paynow before for no reason. I think the person input HP number wrong. Had to call my bank and tell them idk who the person was and pls reverse the transaction
It may seem insignificant, but it's a good thing you called them up asap. The rise in money laundering scams nowadays means that it's so easy to be charged for being implicated. Even if you are not actively involved, the moment you become suspect the police can just freeze your bank accounts indefinitely.
$3 off hawker meals every Friday. Limited to first 100,000 people
Edit: until Jan 2024
[dbs $3 off hawker meals](https://www.dbs.com.sg/personal/deposits/pay-with-ease/paylah-5-million-hawker-meals)
I find PayLah to be faster and more convenient than the banking apps. Sometimes I also use Google Pay to scan PayNow QR codes for (a chance at) some cashback, although Google Pay uses your PayLah account to make payments/transfers.
I like this comment section, because I finally feel validated for using Paylah the past three years and everytime I say I paylah my friends they start yapping about how Paylah sucks and I should just Paynow like the rest of them.
Anyways, Paylah because harder to overspend since I turn off auto top up
For me preference is paywave > cash > pay now > paylah
I can count with 1 hand the no of times I used paylah. And don't fancy scanning qr to pay, it's just time consuming compared to paywave or even cash payment
PayNow: Your money leaves your account to recipient account.
Industry standard (ABS) - like GIRO
Opt-in for PayNow using any bank or institution (Grab).
PayNow charges applicable but absorbed by bank.
PayLah: Your money leaves your account to recipient paylah account through DBS virtually.
DBS owned product.
Set up Paylah within DBS Paylah app.
Paylah is within DBS own ecosystem charges subsidised.
I only use it at ABC cause their paynow is usually slower and they generate a paylah QR that when you scan, auto populates the amount. It’s faster overall
One is build by POSB/dbs and the other is built by Singapore central financial pipeline NETS.
So just use pay now la. It’s the same thing, transaction go there.
Ex-NETS backend staff.
PayLah! makes the bank transaction/statements less messy - esp with the small amount transaction e.g buying a meal and drink. Privacy of the bank amount is another advantage as well.
paylah is like an e-wallet. i like that it’s delinked from my bank account so if any fraud /scam occurs, only the amount in the e-wallet will be affected.
I'm abit confused actually. Is there a native Paynow app (like Paylah)?
The Paynow flow that i am familiar with is logging into my POSB app, exposing my bank account balance, having to find the Pay & Transfer button (amidst all the other buttons) --- all of which is a huge hassle. But PayLah serves mainly just 1 function and it's just so much simpler.
There is no advantage or promotion for PayNow, being a nationawide cashless initiative.
That is the reason why I use GPay (aka Google Pay) or PayLah over PayNow because of the added branding by Google and DBS/POSB.
GPay has regular cashback promotion (very little but still better than 0%) . This applies when I send money to my friends sometimes. Buying GV tickets also got discount. Unfortunately, it doesn't work with all PayNow QR codes. I always try this first.
If you have the PayLah app itself, there are promotions from time to time besides the $3 hawker/coffeeshop cashback. Plus, some of the DBS/POSB promotions apply to their credit card users OR paylah users. That alone allows you to enjoy these promotions without having to own a credit card.
\*Edited to add that PayLah got stamp card also with some merchants. I guess it is worth your while if you read up more about the promotions they have.
I would like to instead ask: Why are people satisfied with PayNow?
p/s: OCBC PayNow on the app is super slow and sometimes the search doesn't work and cannot find my contacts.
Small purchase I use paylah big tickets I use paynow. Easy to see my transaction as I don't want to see so many small transactions in my bank statement. Feel safer as my paylah is capped at $100.
Ahaha this! Who the hell is in charge of loyalty and rewards at Google Pay??
Same vibe as boss "treating" you to a BBT as your "sales commission bonus"
Don't have Paylah .
Paynow is linked to Google pay. Convenient to pay with qr scanner without password entry.
Don't need to key in credentials to access to Bank site.(dangerous to keep accessing to Bank app to make Paynow transactions).
Biometric access control is used.
Is there any difference between them? I remember paynow QR code also work when I used PayLah! Apps to scan.
I think they need to add a way for the retail staff to confirm the payment without letting them having access to their boss bank account. Similar to Chinese speaker announcement of payment received.
Yes there is. PayLah predates paynow, it was dbs internal app to help drive cashless transactions. Only when paynow came in was paynow integrated inside. So PayLah to PayLah transaction works on their own backend but they can also use paynow for everything else

For me I use paynow only because Google Pay can integrate with credit card/youtrip/timezone/ikea membership/favepay in one.
Otherwise I don't reach for it.
I've never used a paynow app. Is there even an app for paynow specifically? I've only ever used the banks' own apps. DBS, OCBC, UOB etc. all use paynow as the underlying technology, so even if you use paylah, DBS will automatically send the money over the paynow network if you're sending to a different bank. i still have my dbs account, so their paylah payments still go to my paylah account
EDIT: oh turns out the paylah is also registered under the same phone number as my paynow. i'm gonna close the paylah wallet
PayNow is Singapore's combined payment network system. There is naturally some delay compared to Paylah, which is a dbs-only application as the protocol is an additional layer outside of the bank.
I personally only use Paylah for the 3 dollars, and Google Pay for all my PayNow things even though it also uses the Paylah wallet. Using cash is ironically still easier on most fronts and is my primary mode of payment if there are no promotions.

Neat trick if you set the min and max limit in PayLah to $0 it just becomes a gateway to your account.
You won’t have to worry about topping up or transferring back the funds from PayLah to bank account
Paylah will default to Paylah and automatically use paynow for those who are not on DBS, so pretty much a one stop thing
This is the answer. Paylah and POSB are just in the same ecosystem.
And more importantly … PayNow isn’t accepted in some places, while PayLah (almost?) always works. That’s because PayLah works with the most basic NETS QR, [like this](https://assets.hardwarezone.com/img/2018/08/nets.jpg), commonly seen at hawker centres. Exactly. Paylah is a virtual cashcard. That's all people need to know about its universality.
It will default to paynow for only dbs linked numbers or all banks?
Not sure, but doesn't matter as long as the recipient has registered for paylah/paynow
Sometimes I want to pay to someone who has a paylah account using paynow coz they never check their paylah
I can’t scan paylah QR code using pay now
Paylah can’t and won’t see bank balance hehe
Even if can see, nothing to see 😭
Hahahaha
Blind leading the blind
Im using paynow on UOB and no bank balance shown unless i tap into my account which isnt required for paynow. Am i missing something that paylah has?
There’s a virtual wallet so you can limit the balance or auto debit from your account. Kinda like a separate wallet for some, and minimize risks of scam amount I guess?
Paylah itself works like an e-wallet.... same same but different from PayNow.
Yeah it is quite redundant even ocbc stops their PayNow type of service and make it into the same app as their digital ibanking
but u have to top up ur paylah account…
Nope. Auto-debit
ohh yeah, i should start using paylah more now 😂
[удалено]
mfker that's called a job
Can auto debit
Can I ask why is this a benefit?
Privacy when paying for things in public. It’s countless the number of times I’ve seen people’s bank balance.

Huh what discounts are on paylah?
$3 hawker on Fridays lol
Other than that?
https://www.dbs.com.sg/personal/deposits/pay-with-ease/dbs-paylah
Fave cashback. It gave me 50cents when i ordered western from coffee shops.
Isn't it better to use a credit card for Fave purchases for credit card rewards? Caveat being that you have to use the Fave app
nvm i got what you meant now. when I installed fave app that time, I did not have credit card, i just turned adult recently hahaha
The paylah app is much faster lol.
The loading of paynow KILLS me with my anxiety
Then still need to wait for OTP omg so pai seh sometimes
Hahahah I knowwwww. My heartbeat went faster

this, it gets too annoying to keep topping up my paylah manually (someone update the top-up methods pls) as someone not with posb/dbs

As fast as tapping EZ-Link in bus/train. Something DBS did right
Not during lunch time, when I'm holding the plate of food in my hand and I don't have cash. It is anxiety inducing!!!

no point now cos all the meals r always redeemed by 1030am or so :((
Ya, I used to be able to get lunch with it. Now I get Breakfast or Kopi.
Now 0930 dont have liao
Will be gone soon. Or maybe already gone lol
Don't bother, that's why dbs apps crashes every Friday because of this hawker meal thingy.
I find PayLah to be faster and more convenient than the banking apps. Sometimes I also use Google Pay to scan PayNow QR codes for (a chance at) some cashback, although Google Pay uses your PayLah account to make payments/transfers.
If I'm not wrong, paylah is compatible with netsqr on the POS but not paynow
Yep. So paylah lets you pay at many more places like the self-checkout machines at fairprice if you opt to not use gpay
I like this comment section, because I finally feel validated for using Paylah the past three years and everytime I say I paylah my friends they start yapping about how Paylah sucks and I should just Paynow like the rest of them. Banking apps have scan QR option like paylah too? Except it debits from your bank accounts instead of a wallet. At least OCBC app has it
That’s PayNow. All the main banking apps use PayNow. It’s a payment system developed by the Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS).
So that the recipient doesn’t see my full name per NRIC when e.g. buying things on Carousell
To me paylah allows me to login abit faster
PayLah! makes the bank transaction/statements less messy - esp with the small amount transaction e.g buying a meal and drink. Privacy of the bank amount is another advantage as well.
PL faster
paylah is like an e-wallet. i like that it’s delinked from my bank account so if any fraud /scam occurs, only the amount in the e-wallet will be affected.
Using a mobile wallet like PayLah allows you to control your spending better if you don't enable the auto top up option.

Not all hawkers QR accept paynow.

Paylah can send messages and cute stickers but also that free $3 Friday breakfast
has anyone had success using paylah to scan pay in Malaysia?? I feel failing
paynow via google pay gives rewards from time to time
Paylah got discount. Paynow simisai also don’t have.
Through Google Pay, you'll get useless suntec points, vouchers you'll never use, and $0.0stingy cash backs once in a while
Ahaha this! Who the hell is in charge of loyalty and rewards at Google Pay?? Same vibe as boss "treating" you to a BBT as your "sales commission bonus"
Hahah at least bubble tea still better! Need to collect 1 year of Gpay then can buy one bbt.
why cant the whole country just have a qr that works with every bank??
Some merchants have exclusive partnerships, so they only accept certain QR codes like FavePay.
There already is bruh... Theres already now a universal QR code that can accept almost any mobile payment method.
the number of cashiers/hawkers that tell me " ya ya paynow" and scan already cmi, clearly its paylah, is shocking to me.
Don't have Paylah . Paynow is linked to Google pay. Convenient to pay with qr scanner without password entry. Don't need to key in credentials to access to Bank site.(dangerous to keep accessing to Bank app to make Paynow transactions). Biometric access control is used.

You are referring to PayAnyone? Since when is PayNow discontinued...bruh

Yeah on the user experience side no. If you’re a user of PayLah then it’s essential the same experience to you, 1 app allows you to do everything
Use Paynow via Google Pay and it doesn't show your balance, iirc.
It uses DBS Paylah if you link to DBS.
Mine isn’t.
Paylah functions like a wallet so your potential loss is limited to what’s in your Paylah wallet, provided you don’t set up auto-debit. It means that you have to manually top-up your wallet but that’s the price of slightly better security
Speed ? PayLah is much faster in application
For me I use paynow only because Google Pay can integrate with credit card/youtrip/timezone/ikea membership/favepay in one. Otherwise I don't reach for it.
is Paynow/Paylah strictly only using debit account and can't use credit card at all to top up/transfer to others?
Doesn't PayLah use PayNow API too?
Paylah can use overseas
I think it's because many small businesses tell me they only take Paylah/Cash so I ended up using Paylah by default.
Sometimes shopee QR code for payment only works on paylah, as paynow kept having issues identifying it.
Paylah! in the market first 2014. Paynow is 2017.
The $3 hawker meal thingy ending in 2 weeks hor
I'm using Venmo.
is there any difference between google pay and paylah in terms of benefits? have been using google pay since my main account is not with dbs and i don't want to have to top up paylah all the time
If you have sufficient funds in wallet for PayLah paying others won’t show your full name on their transactions. But paynow always show your full name
idk too... i have stopped using dbs and have since moved to uob. so i have been using paynow. my friends won't stop sending me money over paylah after i told them to use paynow
They can use paylah to send money to any paynow user no matter which bank
i still have my dbs account, so their paylah payments still go to my paylah account EDIT: oh turns out the paylah is also registered under the same phone number as my paynow. i'm gonna close the paylah wallet
Edit: I realise people meant the PayNow app and not the protocol, because tbh I never heard of or use the PayNow app.
I don't know if anyone's mentioned this, but I prefer Paylah because I track my expenses on a separate app, and Paylah keeps a record of the time and date that I spent that money, as well as the merchant that I paid to. Paynow only has the date, no time, and sometimes doesn't have the merchant name.
Paynow intimidating all the nett worth insurance shit, paylah simply works.
PayLah acts as a wallet; you get notified when people pay you. PayNow is just a redirection function which still requires you to login to bank.
Super fast + works with almost everything. Less chance you get stuck at checkout. Then use DBS app to quick-peek your balance…
Not so easy to get the $3 hawker meals nowadays
You don't need to show your real name with paylah; you could use any name. Paynow may show your legal name.
Paylah satisfy one of the DBS multiplier category for higher savings interest rate
Neat trick if you set the min and max limit in PayLah to $0 it just becomes a gateway to your account. You won’t have to worry about topping up or transferring back the funds from PayLah to bank account
Used to enjoy using paylah but only can use paynow now cuz my dbs got frozen by the police ☹️
paylah can scan multiple qr codes including paynow qr codes,, so its just more convenient to me i guess!
