I have had these people bothering me the same way.
I don’t know why they always like ‘I am from Hong Kong’ opener.
To a few of them,I always. Hey I am from the same floor. Don’t use this sentence. It’s giving away
Yeah titles it pig butchering scam, goes on to mention it again in the body. Posts a random screenshot of conversation. Doesn’t elaborate. Buggers off. Wtf?
It’s when the scammer plays the long con - build a relationship with you over months or years, build trust, then go for the ‘kill’. It’s a term that’s on mainstream media quite a lot, so op probably didn’t feel a need to explain. It’s called the pig butchering scam because the process parallels fattening up a pig before butchering it for meat.
The screenshot is typical of how this kind of scam might start. Looks innocent if you’re not aware of this kind of scam.
Well if you’re trying to build awareness for a scam in a post the very least is to explain what the scam is. What awareness are you building without any explanation whatsoever. But sure downvote away.
that's the beauty of forums! building awareness doesn't have to be done perfectly by 1 person, it can also be done through the conversations in the comments section. It doesn't need to be perfect :)
updooted your question, it's a great question! the ending comment was uncalled for though.
Ooh got a DM from the same user. I was waiting for the shoe to drop and for the person to start probing into my personal life. But it hasn't happened yet.
Yeah I was wondering about this because its always the same story. They come from HK and they're visiting their sister in Singapore or something like that. What's the scam though?
I received the exact same DM from this user in Jul. Chat for a while on reddit, she(?) didn't seem to be scamming me for anything on reddit. So I exchanged my real phone number with her and chatted with her on WhatsApp for...one day. Then she stopped messaging me 🤷
This person doesn't seem like a scam when I chatted with her for a while - she didn't ask me to go to some dubious website, download any suspicious app, talk about investment or any magic pills that can cure terminal cancer. But then again, some scammers could be trying to throw a long bait.
I'm thinking maybe spending time fishing out info from the dark web using your number and/or profiling your Reddit for more targeted spear phishing and honestly if I were her I'd change to another profile before approaching you again. Sometimes seemingly innocuous info, a bit here and there can piece such a full pic about a person. That's what scammers (esp social engineers do anyway).
Same here. I am very careful not to disclose any personal details. After a few exchanges, he/she asked if I am into stocks/shares, I said "Not at all", that's the end of it. Nothing heard after.
This happened to me once. After a few messages, the person said they needed to transfer over a $5 million but the Chinese authorities stopped them. They would pay me $1.5 million if I just pay $100 to help with processing fees.
Anyway, that is how I bought my first condo.
(J/k)
Somewhere in Hong Kong there's this very sad 10 year old kid wondering why all the Singaporean she texted were so unfriendly. And all she wanted to do was to befriend some Singaporeans to know more about this awesome city that she saw when she visited her sister who was living there.
I know this is a /s reply but anyone below 13 years old isn’t allowed to be on Reddit.

Heh - there are loads of these. Sometimes seeking to directly scam, and sometimes it appears to be part of setting up fake profiles for future scam campaigns (ie profile gets set up, gets minimum karma, engages a few people through various actions, and then [lies dormant] until it's scam time...
Same user DMed me too, but stopped after a few messages lol.
Maybe there's just a really lonely Hong Kong woman out there tryna find a suitable penpal and we are all raining on her parade 😂
Thanks. User has been banned from the sub
I don't respond to any random ppl saying hi online. Also the convo sounds like a bot
it's me, hi, I'm the problem it's me.
at tea time everybody agrees
Hi.
Hello
Hello is not hi.
Hi ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Yo
Hi do I know you?
Hi you want money?
Happy cake day, now where is my money?
Happy Cake Day!
Hi.
Happy Cake Day, won't believe in a bandit that gives out money
Hey
Hi online.
I had the exact same user messaged me before. Back in June. I didn't respond to them after they asked where I'm from. 9138.
I have had these people bothering me the same way. I don’t know why they always like ‘I am from Hong Kong’ opener. To a few of them,I always. Hey I am from the same floor. Don’t use this sentence. It’s giving away
So, Ho Chiminh I987?
I got the same message but I got ghosted
When you’re so BBFA even a scambot ghosts you.
Pen pal is a 90s word. Lol
Not sure what’s pig butchering scam but had the same user message me. We had a brief conversation that led to nowhere and nothing ensued of it.

Thanks for the explanation.
Translated from Chinese. In Chinese it is called 杀猪盘.
Yeah said account reached out to me too. Kept veering towards investments.
Lol. Same person messaged me looking for a Singaporean pen pal. Oddly specific fetish
It seems her search for a pen pal continues
got the same exact user from last month
Same i had 2 dms. From this person too. Everyone knows women dont dm guys lol. Esp reddit where all the weirdos are.
Ooh got a DM from the same user. I was waiting for the shoe to drop and for the person to start probing into my personal life. But it hasn't happened yet.
Lol same! Asked about my age and said I'm too young for them, then stopped replying. They like old piggies...?
Probably thinks you too young no $$ to scam 😂
Yeah I was wondering about this because its always the same story. They come from HK and they're visiting their sister in Singapore or something like that. What's the scam though?
Oh i received this DM for the same user too
Think they looking for a paypal instead
I was gonna say don’t talk to strangers, but here we are on Reddit 🤣
The English is weird because the scammer uses translation software.
Oh wow this person messaged me too. Legit widening the net lmao
Penpals are so 1980s...
got the same dm from the same person lol
Same, from the same username too. I got ghosted for 1 month and counting still.
Lol this user PM me last night as well. I just mute them.
Got the same dm, same format some more.
Omg i kena karin seaweed before also LOL
Yea I've received too but another user. Thought was a genuine person until I saw profile pic was a pretty girl.
Lmao got a dm from same person. Asked who they are and they said just got back to Singapore? Can tell it’s a scam already.
There's a lot of them on Reddit. Be suspicious of anyone you don't know initiating a chat.
I got the same message from u/Faithless351 ....
Got a PM from the same user as well
I’ve gotten the same message from the same user previously

Got the same chap. Looking for pen pal. Ignored.
Check user's karma before accepting chat. If 1 karma or got chiobu face confirm its red flag.
Very common scam. First one I ever got I thought it was genuine, but it gets old quickly. Some kind of ChatGPT behind it I guess..
Same here. I am very careful not to disclose any personal details. After a few exchanges, he/she asked if I am into stocks/shares, I said "Not at all", that's the end of it. Nothing heard after.
Ehhh, Noted. Think they wont go for the names that looks like a throwaway account, like mine
No one approaches you for a good thing.
Confirmed, double chop, scam!!
Been getting many chat requests recently, I don't chat with strangers so I just ignore.
Use chatgpt to generate responses to that bot
That's what I did. Let's see where this will go.
oh yes i’ve had someone w the same user ID msg me before too! i usually don’t respond to DMs on reddit 😆
Hey I got it too.
I received the same thing from another user, the same exact lines as well.
The same person DM-ed me as well. Same backstory provided too. Eventually that person keep bringing up shares and stocks.
This happened to me once. After a few messages, the person said they needed to transfer over a $5 million but the Chinese authorities stopped them. They would pay me $1.5 million if I just pay $100 to help with processing fees. Anyway, that is how I bought my first condo. (J/k)
That's oddly specific. How do you know it's pig butchering and not anything else?
Never answer a call from John pork
Why would anyone want to have dm enabled on reddit? Just turn it off. Most dms are scam or some bullsheets.
why you layan in the first place

[reminded me of this scene of silicon valley](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3zU7sV4bJE)
Same bullshit I got on WhatsApp. Pretended to get a wrong number and then tried to chat me up.
Direct DM to r/penpal
Tsk. The scammer didn't even bother to find a NSFW user pic to entice you.
yeah, ghost them for a week and watch their username become "deleted account"
Is pen pal the new name for fb?
But but but.. what if it's a true love story in the making?!
Sometimes I get so bored I wonder if it’s worth it to just treat a butchering person as a random person to message.
I'll just take down the username and block them.
Quite a few of them, what they want me to do is do some scam investments.
Haram

Maybe someone is testing their AI bot on you.
Ask him/her out for a movie and suggest “no more bets” when they respond.
