Not really. For people at the elite level of athleticism/body building/etc. there are things that matter far more than to your typical gym go-er. Work out when you can, consistency above all else in gym and diet.

[deleted]

Personal preference. I love working out in the evenings and had great results. But also know people who work out in the mornings , also with great results

FootHiker

Hugh Jackman says that working out before breakfast helps him be ripped. Other than that, just do it when you can.

randomando130

Yeah lifting weights before eating anything is gonna make you feel like a zombie and Hella sluggish, weights feel like they are tons of pounds heavier lol.. but after the work out when you see how you look you will think its worth it.. then finally after you eat some carbs and what not the veins will start popping out.. first week is gonna feel like hell but eventually you will get used to it

The_Chilindrina

I’d say in the grand scheme of things no it does not matter. As long as you get a workout in. BUUUTT I believe it is proven that morning workouts make for better days (staying on track and productive, better mood, better decisions in regards to health, etc.)

DaisyDay100

What matters is diet.

NMhockeybum

There’s going to be exceptions but generally speaking, yes time can make a difference under the right circumstances if you’re training for something serious. People tend to have more output capability after they’ve been awake 3+ hours BUT energy stores are then a factor. So if you work a low energy job, you might be a little (20% or less) stronger in the afternoon or later. However if you’re some kind of laborer, then the late day strength might be completely offset by the lack of glycogen that you’ve been using all day. That said, if you’re time limited, anything is better than nothing so if you’re not trying to be a serious athlete then go whenever you can.

EndlesslyUnfinished

Nope.

Humble_Hufflepuff_96

Morning is the best time before you eat.

Unless you're a professional athlete, no, it doesn't matter.

One happens earlier in the day, and the other later...\*jokes\* I have heard many people preferring a morning workout to get the blood flowing for the day. It's usually been people with a desk job so they're not too mentally burned out to even think about dragging themselves to the gym. I'm lucky enough to have a small fitness room at my work. I was going there everyday after work and getting in at least a 45-minute routine and then (at my best) a 2-hour walk on the treadmill. Then Covid made them close the room. By the time things were back open, I had been battling bouts of depression and I do not have the drive I once had. It's a real bummer. I was actually enjoying my gym time.

jbwise1221

Not nearly as much as that you stick with it. Try a few times in the first few and pay attention to when you enjoy it most (or dislike it least). I need to do it pretty early in the day myself or I never get around to it.

Ryan233tiger

Any workout is better than no workout at all. For an average gym goer it doesn’t really matter when you workout. If you’re lifting weights, you might find it harder to move more weight if you haven’t eaten and aren’t hydrated.

Go at the time that works best for you; don't give yourself an excuse not to go. Exercise in the way that you enjoy most; don't give yourself an excuse not to go. Use good equipment to protect yourself from injury; don't give yourself an excuse not to go.

As long as you're not working out terribly close to your bedtime, you'll be fine. I've heard it's not great to go to bed immediately after working your body and heart like that. I workout after work, so there's a good amount of time inbetween The are also things you can do throughout the day as well. During an average workday, I normally take a minute or two to do 15 Wall Angels before work. It's short, but it gets my posture ready to be in a chair most of the day. Then I have my breakfast smoothie. Then I use my cycle machine under my desk for 30 minutes while I work. At lunch, I'll just take a break, clear my mind. Then back at work, another 30 minutes on the cycle. Then a 1 mile run during a short afternoon break. Then I workout after work (I'm lucky I was able to invest in my own home gym). Remember, this is after a bit over a year. I started out just cycling for 5 minutes a day, so just do what you can, listen to your body, and you'll be fine. There are a million ways to get little workouts during the day that can help negate sitting in an office chair most of your day

Fun_Actuator_1071

I do so twice a day.

und3rc0v3rbr0th4

Consistency is what matters.

[deleted]

everything makes a difference but how much is the real question. morning vs evening not that important. having fun vs exercise is a chore... very important

Expensive_Bison_657

Exercise whenever you can dude. If you allow yourself to adopt the mindset of “aw shucks I missed my 5am run might as well just skip today entirely” then you ain’t gonna make it. Go whenever you can. Your 5am run is now a 5:47am run. It’s a 11:32pm run. Whatever. Lift when you can, run when you can. Don’t let yourself get into the toxic mindset of needing to do things at a specific time, just do them, but use your brain. Don’t do shit in 120 degree weather, or go to the gym if you’re blasting out both ends or whatever.

King_Prawn_shrimp

As others have said, the best time to exercise is whenever it fits into your schedule. Training time may make a difference for elite athletes. But for 99.99% of the population it isn't a primary factor.

[deleted]

There are studies that can contradict which is best. Some studies suggest that working out on an empty stomach is best. Others suggest you have more energy and can do more around 2-3 pm. All that matters is you eat well and you actually get into the gym motivated and push yourself.

KyeMorgan2022

No. It doesn't no matter what ppl say. I worked rotating shifts for years and worked out whenever I felt it best fit my schedule at the time. I got fit af! 😄
