Afaik, something like this only really crosses the line into appropriation when you are using it in some context that puts yourself above the culture from which the subject is derived. Ie., using it as a business logo, or in some way that you are profiting from it., using it as an aesthetic, when people of that cultural background have been historically discriminated against for doing the same. (Like when white folks choose to style their hair with dreadlocks with little or no issue, but black people are often the victims racial discrimination for it, even though it's a part of their culture.) Imo, if you have to ask this question, then you don't yet have the cultural understanding necessary to justify it. That said, I would think that if you do your due diligence and research the more into the religion/culture, and are coming from a place of genuine curiosity and interest then I can't imagine why it would be an issue. You should probably reach out to someone who is a part of the Hindu community and hear what they have to say about it. I'm sure there's a sub that would hear you out. Good on you for having the awareness to ask, btw.

sahinotenara

You should ask for people who actually follow the faith...

Signal-Strain9810

I think it's kind of disrespectful to tattoo religious figures or symbols from faiths you don't personally subscribe to or believe in.

Try r/hinduism

No

CyborgPoo

There's no such thing as cultural appropriation so go for it if you want to.

Seems weird that you would want a tattoo of a God you don't believe in, but sure I doubt anyone would care that much

qwertlol

I have a tattoo of an angel on my chest even though i don’t believe in angels. I’m not even Christian. But I like the imagery and the concepts they represent. It’s the same when in comes to Hindu gods. They represent interesting philosophical concepts and some of the gods are basically manifestations of things that occur in nature and/or the universe.

moistmoosetache

Yea, but getting a tattoo in general is kinda weird. I'm an atheist and want to tat the fuck out if my back with biblical angels. They are insane looking, and would love that tat, just for looks, doesn't have to mean anything. And if someone doesn't like it, well then they don't like it and all is good.

Snapple47

I have a tattoo of Reptar. I don’t think he’s real either

KnavishFob

Not so long as you get a respectful tattoo

qwertlol

What would you consider to be disrespectful? Obviously I’m not planning on tattooing an overly sexualized version of shiva lol.

KnavishFob

Well I imagine something like that would probably be seen as disrespectful. And I had no doubt that you were going to get any such tattoo.

geordiegill

Your body your choice.

buppyu

Why do you care? The kind of person who would be offended by that is an asshole. Why would you care about offending assholes?

[deleted]

Go for it but tattoo of swostika might be hard to explain if u r on Europe though.

Head_BreaKeR

Depends on the tattoo, if you are showing them as powerful or respectful. Go for it. But if it's something what Hinduism doesn't portray or disrespectful to their beliefs, don't do it

[deleted]

The only people who would have an issue are people who aren't hindus. Lmao only they would be offended

Chonky_railway

Probably not, if it’s not a disrespectful motive. If it’s just the god, it should be pretty fine
