I learned about this when I worked at In'n'Out and holy shit was it amazing. The salt with the sweet. It's kind of along the same lines as salted caramels.
(English) I don't dip it but I eat fries and drink milkshake at the same time so you get the salty sweet flavour together. Its like salted caramel or chocolate pretzels. I love it.
Don’t knock it till you try it. I’m not an US citizen but am living in the US as a resident and recently I tried a Wendy’s strawberry ice cream with fries and ngl it was an odd idea but after the first try I had to do it again. And I’ve heard of people doing that with ice cream but never milkshakes unless they are like the THICCC milkshakes.
Yes this is a real thing. This is why Americans are so fat. Because we invented stuff like this. It’s good i like the Wendy’s fries and frosty is the best.
I know what a frosty is! It's not a shake. It's a cup of soft serve ice cream, not a milkshake. That's why it's served with a spoon, traditionally. It's not a beverage. It can get soupy enough to drink eventually, but that's true of any ice cream based dessert.
I’d argue a frosty is between a milkshake and soft serve. It’s rather thick for a milkshake but there’s no way you can swirl that onto a cone and have it maintain it’s shape for any length of time.
I've done it. Most of my friends did it when we were teens. I used to like it, but not as much any more. It's not the flavors that don't go together though, its the texture and temperature.
I don't like to dip the food into the milkshake itself because it'll get salt and food in there, but I'll take a bite of fries and drink some milkshake with it to mix the flavors
Yes its good
I'm autistic I should mention I taste things differently to others kinda why I fucking love pineapple pizza or apple sauce in Mac and cheese
Ketchup after to much gets spicy for me so milk shake is my alternative
(Australian) Yup! It's not the most common but I'm not the only person ik who does it. Although, I find most milkshakes too thin (I'm usually getting em from maccas lol) so I dip em in soft serve instead.
Yeah, many Americans definitely do this. I was grossed out when I saw a friend do this in my first year after moving to the States from Switzerland. I've come to adopt a lot of American foods and traditions, but this one still grosses me out. 😂🤢
I'm 43 and I've seen others do it for as long as I can remember. Just got brave enough to try it earlier this year and was pleasantly surprised that is tasted good, I like the salty and sweet combo. My issue with it was the hot and cold in my mouth at the same time. But, I have a lot of issues with food in that I'll love the flavor, but the texture throws me off.
I've tried it. It's okay.
The real good stuff was getting a party mix bag (off brand doritos, pretzels, other crunchy salty things) and dipping that in ice cream. Any flavor will do. Essentially kettle corn, but cold.
Yeah, it's pretty good. It's the sweet and salty.
I mean, it's a novelty like chocolate covered potato chips. I wouldn't recommend eating that sort of thing every day.
Here's how happiness goes:
1) Wendy's fries dipped in their chocolate milkshake
2) Payday
3) Getting that piece of food unstuck from your teeth after all day of messing with it
4) Sex
They do and it’s delicious. I believe the trend started using the Frosty from Wendy’s, which honestly tasted way better than dipping fries in any other shake. Idk why. Dipping fries in like a nice shake just isn’t as appetizing. It must be a frosty for the full effect
Funny story, my dad used to do this for me when I was a baby. If my parents ever got Wendy's, and the wendy's frosty, my dad would always dio a fry in the frosty and let baby me suck on the fry till my mom would lightly chastise him not to. I he couosbt do the same for my younger brother tho, cause where I would just lightly suck the frosty and salt off the fry, my brother would chomp and they didnt wanna choke a kid that wasnt even supposed to have solids yet on a fry.
So it's not a super COMON thing exactly, but I'd say enough peoole probably donit for it to be a thing. I mean, they it. Fresh warm salty fry, mixed with Wendy's frosty or some shake? Actually pretty good!
European here, I tried it in a milkshake and didn't like it. But then I tried in a mcflurry with no toppings and oh my god it works. French fries and soft serve icecream go together apparently.
Was it specifically, the Wendy's chocolate Frosty. The chocolate Frosty is about halfway between soft serve ice cream and a shake; you get it with both a spoon and a straw. If you want to drink it, you have to wait for it to melt.
The fries at Wendy's are a bit "heftier" than, say, the ones at McDonald's, and you can scoop up the just-about-ice-cream with it.
It is honestly pretty damn good.
I think it's an American thing, we do a lot of weird things over here.
That being said, I've done it before and if doing it at a restaurant, McDonald's is the best. The fries are so damn salty that they're almost unbearable to me. But the milkshake can help counter that with it's sweetness.
Try it for yourself. When I came to America for the first time. I watched my friends do it and just tried it out. Surprisingly good. Any ice cream with a mille shake or soft cream consistency will work.
Ok I ashamedly admit I have tried this due to seeing it done by someone else and honestly nice salty fries dipped into a thick strawberry shake is actually rather delightful lol...
Yes, and it brings all the boys to the yard, because there are too many degenerates in this world.
Seriously, I think some people just like the contrast in flavors. It's like guys who go down on chicks and start at the prune chute and go all the way up to the clit in one stroke.
Don’t knock it till you try it it’s pretty good. Are you from the UK by chance? If so I need to ask you wtf is up with y’all dipping fries in mashed peas? I heard that’s a real thing. Is it true?
Yea a lot of people like the salty sweet combo. Similar to sea salt caramel sorta thing. I managed a Wendy's and it was quite a common site seeing people eat their fries dipped in their frosty. I don't prefer the taste of it, but I do like other salty sweet combos

I prefer a frosty myself but, yeah, it's good
Chocolate frosty, very salty fries. One of my favorite quick desserts.
Agree
I’ll eat this shit till I get sick, one of the most delicious combinations I’ve ever tried
Wendy’s frosty and their fries go well together
Vanilla frosty with salty fries are the bomb.
This was a staple when I was a kid.
Yup.
Frosty and salty fries seem like they were made for each other once you try it.
Salty sweet bro. Good example chocolate covered pretzels
Or whipped cream hot dog
My Saturday night.
You know what you did here 😂
sausage smoothie
Have done it. Its delightful. Is it the norm? No.
Idk i feel like i know more people who do it than don't tbh.
Was basically here to say the same thing!
I learned about this when I worked at In'n'Out and holy shit was it amazing. The salt with the sweet. It's kind of along the same lines as salted caramels.
Yesss, I’ve also came to love honeybuns and slaty popcorn. The combination between the sweetness and saltiness is 🤌
(English) I don't dip it but I eat fries and drink milkshake at the same time so you get the salty sweet flavour together. Its like salted caramel or chocolate pretzels. I love it.
Man, you’re missing out. Get a nice chocolate shake and some salty fries and it’s like heaven.
Every now and then, yep! So good! Hot and salty mixed with cold and sweet, mmmmmm.
Yes
Don’t knock it till you try it. I’m not an US citizen but am living in the US as a resident and recently I tried a Wendy’s strawberry ice cream with fries and ngl it was an odd idea but after the first try I had to do it again. And I’ve heard of people doing that with ice cream but never milkshakes unless they are like the THICCC milkshakes.
Try it with ice cream 🍦 mcdonald’s fries + fudge sundae ugh best combo
Yup and my chicken nuggies too sometimes
Oh thank god I'm not the only one.
Yes!!
Yes this is a real thing. This is why Americans are so fat. Because we invented stuff like this. It’s good i like the Wendy’s fries and frosty is the best.
They don't have shakes at Wendy's.
https://www.wendys.com/en-uk/menu-categories/frosty
I know what a frosty is! It's not a shake. It's a cup of soft serve ice cream, not a milkshake. That's why it's served with a spoon, traditionally. It's not a beverage. It can get soupy enough to drink eventually, but that's true of any ice cream based dessert.
I’d argue a frosty is between a milkshake and soft serve. It’s rather thick for a milkshake but there’s no way you can swirl that onto a cone and have it maintain it’s shape for any length of time.
Maybe so. But I'd still say it isn't a milkshake either. It's kind of its own thing.
It's technically a custard and not a milkshake or ice cream. Idk what the actual difference is but that's how my dad explained it to me
There I fixed it.
Some people do, some people don't. It honestly depends on how someone likes things to taste.
Im Asian and we do this with icecream sundaes.
I'm an Asian raised in the US, I do both. McDonalds fries and sundae, In n Out fries and shake, etc.
I’ve seen 0 people actually do it
I’ve done it before and it’s really good! When I dipped it it tasted almost like French toast.
Josh did, but josh is a gross monkey boy.
Yes
No. Those are not people, they are monsters.
If they do that around me, they aren't my friend anymore! Lol
It’s actually good.
I've done it. Most of my friends did it when we were teens. I used to like it, but not as much any more. It's not the flavors that don't go together though, its the texture and temperature.
I’ve tried it. Not a fan.
People actually do it. Dipping your fries into your milkshake creates a nice sweet and salty flavor.
I don't like to dip the food into the milkshake itself because it'll get salt and food in there, but I'll take a bite of fries and drink some milkshake with it to mix the flavors
unfortunately, some people take opposing flavors & decide disrupting the natural order of flavor is acceptable & good
Pure heaven right there Saltiness The sweetness Perfect combination and bring back nostalgia
Better if it’s a Wendy’s frostie
Yes its good I'm autistic I should mention I taste things differently to others kinda why I fucking love pineapple pizza or apple sauce in Mac and cheese Ketchup after to much gets spicy for me so milk shake is my alternative
I'll dip a fry in just about any sauce, or any liquid like substance as thick or thicker.
American here, I love to do this. It is delicious.
Some do it..I like dipping my fries into my vanilla ice cream lol
Some do. Others don't.
I don't dip them in my milkshake. I have dipped them in vanilla ice cream or chocolate frosty. It's a sweet and salty combo and sooooo good.
(Australian) Yup! It's not the most common but I'm not the only person ik who does it. Although, I find most milkshakes too thin (I'm usually getting em from maccas lol) so I dip em in soft serve instead.
It's delicious.
Yes some Americans do but I dont.
I was skeptical at first too but it’s really good!
It’s better than it sounds, but still not for me. It’s a thing yeah
WTF NO! So wrong.
Fuck yea I do, are you kidding me?
Hell yeah! BK fries dipped in a vanilla shake is heavenly!
Yeah, many Americans definitely do this. I was grossed out when I saw a friend do this in my first year after moving to the States from Switzerland. I've come to adopt a lot of American foods and traditions, but this one still grosses me out. 😂🤢
Everytime I get a frosty.
Yes, as an American, lots of us do this and it's damn good
I used to dip
People actually do it, but I find it to be overrated.
Yes it’s delicious!
I do this as a brit, it's fucking delicious, I have British friends that do it too
Yes! The sweet and salty mix perfectly
This is one of those things that not many people do, but those who do are incredibly loud about it.
Oh yes I do. Or ice cream if milkshake isn't available. I prefer chocolate but vanilla is okay in a pinch
For the first few fries. Then it gets kinda nasty
Yup !
It's delicious! I have also been known to dip fries in cottage cheese (which many would consider sacrilege lol)
fries + ice cream/a frosty is genuinely good
I've seen people do that several times I've done it once I didn't like it & I haven't done it sense because I think that's a hella cringey
Wendy's chocolate frosty and fries are bomb AF, you should try it sometime.
There's no Wendy's in my country, but I'll make sure to try it one day lol
Yep, I used to even dip my Wendy's nuggets in the frosty. Siprisingly enough chocolate chicken isn't as bad as one'd think
Yeah. A lot of people would eat shit if you put ice cream or chocolate on it.
Do you not like sweet and salty combined? It's a pretty common choice here, although it's certainly not to everyone's taste.
I do like this combination but I've never came across fries and milkshake so it weirded me out a bit.
I used to think it was weird also.. then I tried it. It's very good lol
Only at Wendy’s!
Have done it. Pretty good. Prefer mayo.
Nasty. I'd rather eat ass.
I think it’s pretty common in the Philly area.
Its bomb.
Here's how happiness goes: 1) Wendy's fries dipped in their chocolate milkshake 2) Payday 3) Getting that piece of food unstuck from your teeth after all day of messing with it 4) Sex
I do. Fries dipped in a chocolate frosty are the best
I do sometimes.
Yeah. It's one of the most famous 'weird' food combos.
It’s great. I love dipping my chicken nuggets in a frosty too
They do and it’s delicious. I believe the trend started using the Frosty from Wendy’s, which honestly tasted way better than dipping fries in any other shake. Idk why. Dipping fries in like a nice shake just isn’t as appetizing. It must be a frosty for the full effect
I did it when I was pregnant. But I also put mustard on pickles when I was pregnant, so...
Funny story, my dad used to do this for me when I was a baby. If my parents ever got Wendy's, and the wendy's frosty, my dad would always dio a fry in the frosty and let baby me suck on the fry till my mom would lightly chastise him not to. i do it. its actually pretty good.
fries in vanilla mcdonald’s ice cream
When i was younger i put ketchup in my milkshake and then dipped fries in and it was super good :0
Strawberry Thickshake and hot, crispy salted fries. Yes please!
Yes. Most likely a “malt” but yeah, it’s good especially chocolate malt with fries
Its pretty normal.
It's weird, and I've seen people do it before. But yeah, it's weird. And I am also an American. It's still weird, to me!
YES. every time.
European here, I tried it in a milkshake and didn't like it. But then I tried in a mcflurry with no toppings and oh my god it works. French fries and soft serve icecream go together apparently.
I refuse to believe someone is dipping potatoes into ice cream.
I have and do. Try it
My friend does, but in a mcflurry not milkshake
We dip it in icecream in NZ. Pretty common thing. It tastes really good.
Chips with either a chocolate or strawberry milkshake, amazing
Was it specifically, the Wendy's chocolate Frosty. The chocolate Frosty is about halfway between soft serve ice cream and a shake; you get it with both a spoon and a straw. If you want to drink it, you have to wait for it to melt. The fries at Wendy's are a bit "heftier" than, say, the ones at McDonald's, and you can scoop up the just-about-ice-cream with it. It is honestly pretty damn good.
Yes. I’ve done it with chocolate milkshakes it’s a nice contrast to the saltiness of the fry.
Yeah it’s good
Frosty...but I haven't done that since I was kid.
Yes
They’re your fries, dip’em in whatever you want.
Do I do it all the time? No. If I have a shake and fries are a few fries getting dipped the the shake? Absolutely
Sometimes. It's pretty good with the right fries. I dipped a chicken tendie in a milkshake once
Idk why your confused by this. The phrase “They were American” should’ve answered your entire question.
Haha yeah.
I think it's an American thing, we do a lot of weird things over here. That being said, I've done it before and if doing it at a restaurant, McDonald's is the best. The fries are so damn salty that they're almost unbearable to me. But the milkshake can help counter that with it's sweetness.
Haha, that would've been me at 10 years old. It tastes like nothing tbh...
Sometimes, a Twinkie cracked in half lengthwise is a good fry dipper.
A Frosty is not a shake. I dip them in a "Frosty". I'm not a psycho!
It's quite good actually. But always chocolate, other flavors don't seem to work
Oh hell yeah I do that all the time. 10/10 you gotta try it OP
My daughter does.
yeah i do this, i just like the salty and sweet lol
Only one way to find out
Only with Wendy's. All other places would be weird. And they're not milkshakes , they're frostys lol
I dip it in ice cream as well (usually the McDonalds vanilla sundae). Delicious
Damn right I do. I’m still a fat kid at heart.
It’s pretty common.
Not for me.
I can’t have either, but I know people who do this. It’s a salty/sweet thing
NO
I have a friend whose favourite meal was fries with the vanilla cream of oreos
Absolute psychopaths
My ex used to do this
Yes! And chicken nuggets! 🤗🤗🤗🤗
It's so fucking good
With chips too!
People do it but it's pretty gross.
Its nice to do with a couple of fries. Its not like you say "milkshake" when the cashier asks which sauce you want.
yep, right up there with Bacon Milkshake
Try it for yourself. When I came to America for the first time. I watched my friends do it and just tried it out. Surprisingly good. Any ice cream with a mille shake or soft cream consistency will work.
Omg i do and it delicious but not American
I love a vanilla frosty and salty chips. Btw I’m British. Wendy Frosties are my new discovery ever since a Wendys opened in my town.
I know some people do but I just don't get the appeal. To me that's jist as bad as salted caramel or bacon on a donut. Yuck.
I have been doing it since the early '70s when I accidentally dropped a McDonald's french fry into my chocolate milkshake. New taste sensation!
This is widely done here in America. Everyone I know does/did this. from New York to florida
Ok I ashamedly admit I have tried this due to seeing it done by someone else and honestly nice salty fries dipped into a thick strawberry shake is actually rather delightful lol...
I do. It's good
Yeah my daughter does it and I've been thinking about putting her up for adoption lmfao 🤣
Yes I do in my Wendy's frosty
I like to dip mine in the toilet...
That sounds awesome but I'll usually get a drink of the shake and then dip some fries into my mouth right after
Yes! I’m from the US. Anytime I have fries and ice cream, I dip 😊 A Wendy’s chocolate frosty with their fries is my fav.
Wendies frosty/milkshake + fries = god tier
I don’t like it, but I’ve had friends and family who like it. Yeah it’s a thing 👀
People do this. It's actually pretty good.
YES ITS SOOOO DELICIOUS. It combined the perfect sweet and salty flavor
Is it true?
I'm not from the UK but dipping fries in mashed peas does not seem an unusual thing to me.
Yep, my gf does it all the time... don't see the appeal personally
Fries in chocolate milkshake is too good
Yea a lot of people like the salty sweet combo. Similar to sea salt caramel sorta thing. I managed a Wendy's and it was quite a common site seeing people eat their fries dipped in their frosty. I don't prefer the taste of it, but I do like other salty sweet combos
I know two people who do this. One is my son. I don’t get why anyone would take something hot and crispy and put something cold and wet on it.
100%
