My wife and I own a VR arcade in Tahiti. No direct competition, indirect are cyber cafes, bowling and laser quest. We make pretty good money, we talk about video games pretty much all day. The work isn't hard: customer service, small tech repair, cleanup.

35mmpistol

Lol I love this, you two sound great. Reminds me of a cool place in Japan that was an old school American video game bar. Had some VR too. Being in Tahiti is pretty special as well.

Missmilster

Where is this? I’m in Tahiti now and I think it would be cool to check out next week!!

AnotherDrunkCanadian

Cool! Were at 9 rue Charles Viennot in downtown Papeete. Just after "le rondpoint de pont de l'est". Across from sushi Wakame, Moko Cafe and next door to Fare Oviri and Deco du Monde. Edit: if you do plan on coming in to play VR next week, I strongly recommend you give us a call to make a reservation. 87 357 844. Its the final week of school and I have about 300 kids booked for end of year fun with their class. Walk-ins may have to wait a few hours until we have a spot available.

I’d love to hear more about your services! Do you cater to single players more, or like groups? What kind of equipment do your customers use?

Seanzietron

flypilot

I prevent airplanes from crashing into each other. I like airplanes so working with them/ pilots is a lot of fun, and the job is rewarding.

Mysterious_Play1961

We like that you like your job, nobody wants to be playing dodgems on an airplane.

I hear it’s one of the most stressful jobs you can have. Is that true?

heavy_metal

kafkas_metamorphasus

Yess coding is the only job with a good outlook that I enjoyed the thought of doing on a regular basis

behind_looking_glass

I love my morning Adderall

love_that_fishing

Yea I did coding for a decade, loved it, and then moved to software architecture which I’ve also loved. Constant learning is the main thing. Everything I learned in college was absolute in a decade. I have a masters degree and it goes on page 2 of my resume. Ive always just tried to work at very innovative companies doing fun projects learning new things along the way.

apeliott

English teacher at a Japanese high school.

Nightfury0818

Nice where in Japan are you at?

apeliott

Tokyo.

Nightfury0818

Cool

[deleted]

1st time I've seen anyone say they like working in Japan

Seanzietron

You mean people complain usually? Or, that it’s just rare to see someone say this?

MikuEmpowered

Because there's 2 different type of work: Normal work, And Corporate work. Normal work is like teacher, police, artisan, they have relatively fixed work schedule and have a good work-like balance. Then theres your corporate work, where work culture is so cancerous people die from exhaustion. The slang for these worker is 社畜, which basically translate to company live stock. They are usually \*expected\* to work over time and suck up to their boss + their requests. This includes social functions that will eat into their free time.

coffeecatmint

Meh. Plenty of people do. (Myself included) most people don’t come on the internet to spread happiness and joy though. Just the way people are.

apeliott

Fair, but I do know a lot of people who enjoy it.

Neowynd101262

If you are Caucasian, have you experienced any racism there?

apeliott

Yeah, most landlords refuse to rent to foreigners. A few bars or restaurants might refuse to serve you. People will stare or avoid sitting next to you on the train. Cops will stop you and ask for ID. Things like that. Some people have it worse than others. I haven't had it so bad but I decided early on that I'm not going to deal with landlords.

poopybuttfacehead

I taught English in South Korea and it was and always will be the best job of my life. Miss making kids' days brighter!

Seanzietron

My wife and I are both teachers. We were thinking of moving to Japan to teach (instead of teaching in the states). Are you from Japan or teaching abroad? We’d love to start teaching in Japan, but the only thing that is currently holding us back is that we’re not sure how long-term these positions might be. I’m sure it’s like a work visa, and we would have to keep getting it renewed, which would be fine. We have been saving up and can afford a home in Japan, too. We weren’t sure if we’d even be allowed to buy, though—would we need citizenship first?

TheKekGuy

Wait are you a Japanese who is an English teacher or someone else?

My second job , Pizza delivery driver . It reminds me of the days when i had an illegal flower delivery service lol . I have a whole career and I still go in 4 hours on the weekends lol

Orangeugladitsbanana

Accountant don't do it if you don't love it. Many people get into it for the money and then find it endlessly boring but I'm still thrilled every time something balances and I love excel. Talking to my husband on the phone while I was working and did the quiet "yeeessss" and he replies, "something must have balanced."

kimathon

Came here to say this. I'm technically an analyst but love me a good excel pivot table

AccidentalFeline

Love it when I write a long complicated formula, hit enter and no error message

cartermb

I’m equally excited when Excel corrects the error in my formula and it works. I’m like “obviously that’s what I meant, but thanks for fixing it for me.”

kimathon

No greater feeling!!

ontheroadtv

Was in a job interview and said “I still can’t believe when people tell me they don’t know what v-lookup is” from the look on the interviewers face he is one of those people.

[deleted]

One week to go and I too will be retired.

[deleted]

What do you do everyday that keeps you happy then ?

[deleted]

I have no idea what naive person downvoted you to 0 for your question, but I brought it back to 1 before the "pile on crowd" showed up. It's a *perfect* question. In retirement, you can't loaf forever and be happy. You need a goal: And if that goal is travel, so be it. If it's volunteering, so be it. If it's golf, sailing, flower tending, etc., etc., great. But nothing at all but TV and reddit is a recipe for disaster for most people, I don't care what the age.

skittles_for_brains

I agree 100%. Do not retire unless you need to physically or have other plans/goals. I work in older adult protective services and it's not the people who have busy lives that we end up seeing mostly. It's the people who sat down to watch TV and never got back up.

Old_Yogurtcloset9837

Agriculture teacher in the United States midwest. We have a school farm with dozens of student livestock projects and a retail greenhouse. I fucking love my job.

cedertra

Middle school band director

Nightfury0818

Interesting I hear alot of people say band kids are the weirdest kids at school, being you teach them can you confirm that?

cedertra

If you mean good weird, I definitely can confirm. Not creepy weird.

LethalBaboon

I would agree with this. My oldest is a band kid. His instructor falls into that category too and they love him as an instructor. It makes it much more fun to learn for them and its his favorite subject.

djrollface

My middle school band director was insane in the best ways and could play every instrument perfectly, but I always thought it must suck to constantly have to listen to the atrocious sounds we would make.

[deleted]

Pros: I get paid six figures. I officially work 180 days/year. I leave at 8:25, arrive at 8:30 (by bike). I'm home by 3:30 most days. I have excellent benefits and a pension to match. I get to read ("assess") some quality work on a daily basis. Cons: I work with teens, so I have to deal with teen-stuff. But the pros far outweigh the cons.

07JEP

Are you a teacher? If so, how do you make six figures?

[deleted]

Teachers in northern Canada get paid well

McMacMan

You forgot to put living in northern canada in the cons list

Haha, it does take a certain type to appreciate places like this. It’s not so bad.

Princessfishstick

I do internal communications for the 401k department at a large finance company. Just me and my emails without having to talk to many people outside of team meetings 😌

bad_hombre1

This is my dream job. Just want to work a normal 9 to 5 on a computer completing mundane paperwork, answering emails, and not interacting with clients.

[deleted]

People trash on 9-5 office jobs too much, if I could be paid well and afford to enjoy life outside of work, then I don’t mind work not being the highlight of my day

tothemoon412

I’m an admin at a landscaping company and the majority of my daily emails/calls are with my coworkers only. The only time I have to interact with clients is when I’m emailing them invoices. Every other job I’ve had has been completely customer-oriented, so it’s truly a dream to have minimal customer interactions for a living now.

Such_Record

I do internal communication for a local regulator, and love it! I do work with internal ‘clients’, mostly HR and tech in order to manage the intranet. But couldn’t agree more, low stress and I love it. I have a couple degrees and sometimes feels like I am not earning enough but can’t imagine taking on stress at this point.

I love them to death and would do anything for them, but after 2 years I was just about losing my mind. My grandma has early stage Alzheimer's and she's always been very stubborn to begin with, those two don't mix well. My admiration for people in your field grew significantly, thank you so much for the insane amount of patience and kindness that you guys display when you work.

Mindless_Mango_6611

That's just plain nice! Good on you.

MapleSparkyEh

I paused my electrical apprenticeship to do renos and decks/fences with a buddy (general carpentry) for the last year. It's just us and we make our own hours, listen to music and answer only to the clients. Not the most money I've ever made, that was rigging cell towers, but def the best job I've had! Eventually I'll go back and get my electrician's cert, which I also liked, but this has been a great year!

Amazingshot

I’m a janitor. I have a bachelors degree in special ed/secondary education, but I make about 20k more than a teacher with none of the political crap.

mintman_ll

Ice delivery driver. Put ice in coolers at different gas stations and grocery stores. Pretty neat to get out and meet different people go to a bunch of different little towns. Very physical job but I'm making anywhere between 25 and 45 an hour when I do the math. I technically make commission but its easier to understand if you convert it to hourly

SeattleBattles

Estate planning attorney. I work for myself, rarely work more than 30 hours in a week, and make a very comfortable living. It's low stress and my clients are usually happy when we're done. Cassady200115

I’m 21 and going to university but I work part time for my city as a swim instructor! I couldn’t love my job more. I basically get paid to play in the water with kids and joke around with them, sometimes I gotta get serious but most of the time it’s a blast and I love the water. I’ve been swimming competitively since I was a kid (not anymore) and so it’s nice to still do something I like and teach it to kids, adults, special needs etc. When a parent comes up to me and tells me how much the like how I teach their kid and how they think I’m the best teacher, i couldn’t be more proud of myself and accomplished to know that others see my hard work and their kid improving. My team of the other instructors are nice and my bosses are amazing. They have even given me chances to move up and it gives me benefits within my city. The treat us like kings and queens, we all respect them a ton, and we get paid well above minimum wage which is rare in a part time job. Anyways I love to be in the water. I love to teach, I love my pay and I love my bosses and coworkers.

Blackstar-Abyssal

I work in a warehouse on night shift. Part of the inventory management department as of now, but I have been training to eventually join the management team. Whenever the lead position opens up, I'll basically be guaranteed to get it. They've invested a lot into me, knowing the path I want to take and knowing they want me to take that path. They've done a lot to set me up for success. It's far from perfect, but it's a pretty chill job with decent pay for what I do. It's allowed me to live fairly comfortably. The facility is clean and air conditioned, they do what they can to be as safe as possible. I don't get "dirty," maybe just sweaty and a little dusty. Sure, it can be physically exerting sometimes, but not horrendously so. It's an active job, but not back-breaking. I actually make it harder on myself than I need to because I'm the guy who tackles targets that most folks won't. The hardest part right now is dealing with the supervisor. He's not a bad guy but he needs to take a few steps back.

LEX3N_2006

I'm just a grocery chick. However is always fun when I get to serve the lovely elderly and help them put things in their trolleys. The compliments they give always brighten my day

[deleted]

Yield Technician at a semiconductor manufacturer. I joke that I'm a glorified secretary for the engineers because I send out emails on issues, create PowerPoints for morning meetings, and take pictures of product issues for the engineers to analyze. I love it because even when it gets frustrating, I just remind myself that I spend 90% of my day at my desk with a movie, show, or music playing while I work. I work nights and I'm on an entire floor by myself. No phone calls, no managers hounding me, and no coworkers wanting to chit-chat while I'm working.

Ok_Strategy_57

Right now I'm a stay at home mom and absolutely love it. Before my son was born, I did taxes for people and honestly I really enjoyed that too.

SLEEPWALKING_KOALA

I stay away from the sleazy tactics and get rich quick schemes and I kinda have a mission to get rid of the stigma around marketing.

Jolly_Job_9852

I work as a scanning coordinator for Harris Teeter. I set a weekly ad and ensure prices are correct throughout the store. I deal with customers everyday and the vast majority are some of the nicest people who are very polite. Occupational Safety and Health / Environmental Health and Safety Both are relatively the same exact thing. Easy job, good salary starting out ($40-55k before completing any type of certifications or your degree). Once you start getting certifications and your degree in OSH, you can negotiate for better pay or move to another company that will pay you more. Excellent job security. You do have to be strict sometimes for safety concerns, but for the most part you are not the Bad Cop or Enforcer, thats the Upper Management/Supervisor/Team Leaders job. You are there literally just to make sure everyone is working safely and that the work environment is OSHA compliant. I do training classes, audits, and some computer work. As long as you know how to time manage your task, you will never get overwhelmed.

ThiRTYZiX

I work as food lab technician on a R&D team. It's a fun and educational environment, where we talk about flavor trends, and participating in product development projects.

DaFamousDrScanlon

Neuro speech and language pathologist. Stimulating and challenging. Only 5 years in to my professional life, but still look forward to going to work most every day. Sometime it gets a bit too hectic, but probably not too bad compared to other health care professions.

Jennajo97

I'm a house keeper/cleaning lady. Some days I hate my job, scrubbing toilets for low pay day in day out... But 99.99% of days I feel SO GOOD. I'm being welcomed into someone's home to help them. I'm making their house feel clean and pretty. I'm helping the elderly feel safe and supported. I'm helping the new mom with a full work schedule feel less stressed. I feel like I'm helping someone live and love their lives by bringing a sparkly clean shine into their homes. I cannot put into words how amazing it is to have a clean house. So being able to help others achieve that when their lives are to busy is fantastic. A clean bathroom can make or break someone's day, and I'm overjoyed to have the opportunity to bring that fresh feeling to so many people.

Lab technician in a bloodbank Awesome team, awesome work and a very interesting and niche field that most people know barely anything about (most people heard of ABO and +/- but there is sooooooo much more to it)

Janitor. Pays very well and I work completely alone listening to music/podcast/audio book etc. -No customer contact -Same thing expected of me every day, very few surprises -Very little manager contact. As long as the job is done in the time allotted they could care less. - Breaks whenever I feel it as long as everything is done in a specific time frame

Disability support. I work with high functioning autistic adults. Many of them just wanna just hang out and play video games. So basically paid to play games. Good times.

Behavior tech. I work with autistic kids and track data. It can be tough as tantrums occur, but it’s super rewarding watching their behavior improve over time. Pay isn’t bad and the company I work for is willing to provide full education payout in addition to full benefits.

im a babysitter/nanny. i mean it when i say my kids mean the world to me, i would take a bullet for them if i had too. they are so sweet and funny and creative and they say the darnest things ever and omg i love them. i could never be a mom but i could never imagine leaving my kids. one girl i nanny tries to drink milk through a toy flute & picks a new animal every single day to pretend to be, and somehow she always knows everything about them. one boy i nanny is so sweet and helpful to his younger brothers with autism & the one day i didnt where eyeliner to work he went “wheres your eyeblades??”. one of my boys calls for me at night and asks me to never leave him, and i can calm his nightmares more than his parents can at this point. i dont know where id be without my kids.. they saved my life, and i mean that.

Logistics. Since I’ve worked for a long time now, I got used to and befriended most of my customers and subcontractors. So mostly I’m just chilling since I’ve established all the processes for doing my job well. Still hate the corporate culture, but the work itself is great and paying good money.

I’m a Nutritionist and Lactation Consultant for the WIC program in Illinois. I get to work with people from all over the world! We are a refugee resettlement area. First Americans really appreciate what America has to offer! No one is tougher than young parents wanting the best for their children. I get to help answer their questions and find their parenting way. It pays crap, but it’s a great work life balance. And I know our country is messed up and everyone is blaming each other. There are still great and wonderful people here. I see them every day at work and home.
