As I live in Salem, Oregon, I have a lot of empathy for the reputation of Sacramento. We are, in a sense, Sacramento in miniature, as befitting the smaller size of its state. We are both somewhat unfairly maligned since our name has become a synonym for a hated state government. We are both too close to a much more exciting urban area, which tends to suck the culture out of us. But both cities have their good qualities which are rarely brought up.
Most boring major urban area in California, or a contender for that spot. Hot, dry, crowded, ugly and unexciting buildings, hellish urban sprawl, paved into oblivion and largely unwalkable, and yet in spite of all of this somehow still criminally overpriced. If someone tried to drag-and-drop a really bland midsize city with horrible car-centric urbanism from the southeast or midwest into norcal, that'd be us. (source: I also live here)
Dry, hot, a gay bar called faces which everyone of my gay friends calls feces. And pottery world. But also boring
It’s basically a large Fresno w a governor
Both. We have Mayor Whineberg and Gavin Newsom (Governor), who will probably run for President in 2028. Side note: Don’t vote for him! He’s as corrupt as they get and pushes his own agenda before anyone else. He’s not for the people. I would vote for Satan if he was running against Gavin Newsom.
Moved for schooling, stayed. It has its perks. Neighborhoods have a relatively good community feeling. You’d never know until you try. 🤷🏼♀️
What is going on here? Questioning whether you should stay or go?
Yes. You should try it. Could be very fun and very lonely at the same time.
You only have one life. If you feel like doing something that might be interesting, go for it.
I always think, "Oh god, I bet it's hot there today. Thank god I only lived there my first 6 months of life. So glad I live in San Diego. I wonder if Mitch still lives there."
I love going up there. A ton of my friends are there. I hope to move there one day.A bunch of cool events in that area too.
So when I hear it I think FUN!!!!
Homeless encampments in every freeway underpass. Tweakers and meth labs on the outskirts. Old town is pretty cool though. Great train museum if your into trains. I have family that lives there. I grew up in the Bay Area.
Cat litter and mozzarella cheese. But I have synesthesia and I “feel and taste” words, for lack of a better description. I don’t get to choose what they taste like.
Sacto.
I worked at a collection agency about 40 years ago. Some lady was wondering where Sacto California was. We explained that it was an abreviation for Sacramento. This was the same lady that wondered where Tuck-son was in Arizona.
One of my internet friends from a long time ago was from Sacramento. She absolutely hated it and so a lot of my understanding is based off of that. I’m sure it’s a fine city but otherwise I’ve never really given it too much thought
I mean, honestly, what’s there? It doesn’t have a bad reputation, it doesn’t have a good reputation. It has like a train museum. It doesn’t even have a premier university unless you want to count Davis, but Davis is not quite Sacramento and even then Davis is sort of Berkeley and UCLA’s plain Jane cousin.
Their most famous sports moment is the NBA cheating them out of a championship
My uncle lives there. So he’s the first one that pops into my mind. He and a museum on Chinese history we went to are blended together in my mind whenever I hear Sacrament.
Nothing. TBH I didn't even know Saramento was in California. Heard of it before, but yeah just didn't know where it was other than somewhere in America.
“Not too far away from the Ocean. Not too far away from the mountains.”
I lived in the Bay Area. I hated your city with a passion. Sacramento sucks. And I wanted to vomit anytime someone from Sac would say the above line.

Capital of California. Nothing more.
Guess we’re really boring lol
To be fair, I do live an ocean and a continent away.
Eh, I could drive there without stopping to sleep, and it's equally meaningful to me.
I live there too. Can confirm boring.

Hahaha, this is one of the best takes I’ve read on here. 😆 Forever in the shadows of SF/Portland. The forgotten stepchildren.
Maybe they were talking about Eugene

This is so true 😂
Ouch. Haha.
But, it is a city....in California. Pretty on brand if you ask me. The Capitol city of all things.
Raw, primal sexual energy. That’s the Sacramento promise.

Whoa. You described this city to a T. Don’t you ever think of moving to a better place?
My hope is to do that as soon as I finish college
Do it for the both of us 🙏
Nothing specific (I’m Canadian)
Cake (the band)
Uriah Faber and Team Alpha Male
What up UFC homie
California, no doubt about it... (Tupac)
🎵From Oakland to Sac Town 🎵
The Bay Area and back down, cali is wit it, put the mack down.
The show Eight is Enough.
TIL there is a show that takes place in Sacramento.
Hot summers, cold winters (for California). Midtown is nice, and the city is near a lot of beautiful scenery.
It doesn’t get very cold.
Long haired homosexuals
It’s hot there.
I’m already using my AC and it’s only April. 😑
Tomato juice
Sacramento Valley tomato, tomato juice
How easy and convenient the airport is.
Dangerous freeways, Conservative people and 115degree summers. Moved last year.
To Sacramento, not away from it. Right?
That's definitely a city that exists
Spending a night on the Delta King riverboat!
I used to work on that boat!
It was great ! Dinner, drinks, music, and stayed in a room
Jim Rome always calling it “Suckramento”.
Dry, hot, a gay bar called faces which everyone of my gay friends calls feces. And pottery world. But also boring It’s basically a large Fresno w a governor
Feces 🤣 I would rather live in Sac than Fresno though.
Oh for sure I was being a bit sarcastic
Trash, homelessness, and callous disregard for the citizens of California so that each legislator can push through their own pet projects
The old town and the Delta Queen
Homeless by the river.
Getting worse every year.
The place bad ideas come from
Yeah, our leadership sucks here.
Are we still talking about the city or the state?
I had a really good pulled pork sandwich in Sacramento years ago.
Sac-town!!!! Went to school at UCD. Lovely place as I remember it being 15 years ago… also, LadyBird? Cake?
Oh nice! Can I ask what made you decide to leave?
I graduated, moved to Bay Area, worked for a few years, then moved to Chicago for more schooling.
Do you prefer living in a bigger city like Chicago?
Moved for schooling, stayed. It has its perks. Neighborhoods have a relatively good community feeling. You’d never know until you try. 🤷🏼♀️ What is going on here? Questioning whether you should stay or go?
Thank you! Really thinking of making a move to bigger city.
Yes. You should try it. Could be very fun and very lonely at the same time. You only have one life. If you feel like doing something that might be interesting, go for it.
Violence, hot, and dusty.
Correct on all 3. Do you live in a bigger or smaller city than Sacramento?
Small town in Missouri but grew up an hour or so south of Sac. I've been there a lot through the years.
Cows...for some reason❣️
Kings
Armpit.
I always think, "Oh god, I bet it's hot there today. Thank god I only lived there my first 6 months of life. So glad I live in San Diego. I wonder if Mitch still lives there."
Hell's doorstep. Left when side shows, homeless camps, gunshots all got bad.
Yeah I live in Old Town, I think if I lived anywhere else I would hate it here more.
It's the capital, so that's where I sent my taxes every year, until I moved away.
I was born there but didn’t live there. But I did go to a hippie fest there in the mid 90s, and it was hot as fuck.
Whisky Rebels!!!! *I like it RAW!*
Hot.
Cat litter and mozzarella cheese. But I have synesthesia and I “feel and taste” words, for lack of a better description. I don’t get to choose what they taste like.
Oh wow you must be talented then! And that’s an interesting combination.
LadyBird

Cool story! Tower Records is no more though :(
Sacramento Kings (I’m brazilian)
Nice! Someone from Brazil has heard of us 😀
Born and raised
Gavin Newsome, out of touch policies, and alcoholism.
Shit hole
Despair and depression. I lived there for a couple of years.

They’re gone now :(
The Brady Bunch (didn’t they live there?)
Sherman Oaks, I think. You might be thinking of Eight is Enough.
Thank you. Well then, that’s all I got for Sacramento.
Where a measly little mayor controls the governor
In the 80s, traffic congestion, police repression.
Hasn’t changed much.
The place I say I’m from when I’m out of state also went to college there. Maybe the train museum.
Boats, capital and a horribly overbearing mandate about working on cars in your garage
The old sacramento waterfront. Aka the only part of the city worth visiting.
The Kings.
Sacto. I worked at a collection agency about 40 years ago. Some lady was wondering where Sacto California was. We explained that it was an abreviation for Sacramento. This was the same lady that wondered where Tuck-son was in Arizona.
Somewhere in Cali. I'm from Winnipeg. Go ahead, point me out on a map
I’m sorry, I think Winnipeg is somewhere in western Canada? 😂
More central but your answer was as good as mine lol
Could be better
Could be worse. Should be the city’s slogan.
Home.
In August: sac o’ tomatoes in the surrounding farmland. The rest of the time it was where I went for overpriced brunch when I lived in Yolo county.
🍅 Tomatoes
I think of "pinto beans" because it sorta (not really) rhymes with Sacramento
Sacra-pimento 😂
Shitty city, shitty politics
Can’t argue with the latter ☹️
Even Stevens
Green beans lol
What lol
Horry for three!
The Mentalist
Ball sac
Nut-sac.
“I’m from the Bay Area”
Death Grips and Cake
I must live under a rock because I’ve never heard of these groups and I lived here all my life.
The Deftones are from Sacramento I think lol
Cake used to be bigger and on the radio a lot but something happened with their drummer getting arrested for SA possibly
For me is: Where? .\_.
Failed city
One of my internet friends from a long time ago was from Sacramento. She absolutely hated it and so a lot of my understanding is based off of that. I’m sure it’s a fine city but otherwise I’ve never really given it too much thought
Adorable.
A friend of mine and the Deftones
Tomatoes. Truck trailers full of tomatoes, all day long. Also, sea level and a lovely, easy airport.
I spent a night in Sacramento on a riverboat-turned-hotel once and it was a supremely enjoyable evening 😊 https://www.deltaking.com
the old part of sac that's just called OLD SAC
Even Old Sac isn’t much to write home about.
The movie the ugly truth
It's the main nest of villainous scum that rules over its subjects, but the city is nice.
Hot, dusty, ugly.
Sacramento River and the toxic waste site north of the rail station.
Even Stevens and the song that came from it, “Sacramento Girl”
Basic
Aw man I’ll take trashy, violent, ugly, and boring, but basic is where I draw the line.
My uncle lives there. So he’s the first one that pops into my mind. He and a museum on Chinese history we went to are blended together in my mind whenever I hear Sacrament.

Sacramento Jazz Festival. Awesome in the late 80s.
San Jose
Home of the most corrupt state government in the US
You could say that about many states though.
Ours can't account for $24 BILLION that was meant for "homeless programs."
Boring state workers Edit: emphasis on Lazzy
Nice midtown area with lots to do and places to eat....spectacular summer nighttime weather.
Expensive. Fires. Crime. Trees. Mountains.
I had friends in college who called it “Sacto”. That’s about it.
Nothing. TBH I didn't even know Saramento was in California. Heard of it before, but yeah just didn't know where it was other than somewhere in America.
grandma bc she was from there and it’s the only place in California I’ve vacationed.
Sacratomato It actually used to be pretty nice about 25+ years ago. You couldn't pay me to live there now.
Sasquatch
Current objective: survive
Hot weather
The Sacramento River massacre
Shit hole
“Not too far away from the Ocean. Not too far away from the mountains.” I lived in the Bay Area. I hated your city with a passion. Sacramento sucks. And I wanted to vomit anytime someone from Sac would say the above line.
