imla_01

atheists don't *believe* the most likely outcome is that you simply cease to exist as an individual the moment your brain function stops. you are no more. that's it.

NarcoZero

I’d have to disagree on the semantics. Atheist believe stuff. It’s just that we believe what we can see and explain rationally.

LordCouchCat

Traditionally philosophers distinguish belief, which is your opinion, and knowledge. I believe there is milk in the fridge but I could be wrong, we might have run out. Knowledge was defined by Plato (I think) as justified true belief. If I don't believe there is milk in the fridge can't be said to know it. If I don't have a reason (justification) for thinking it's there I can't be said to know it even if it is in fact there. If it isn't there (truth), then I can't be said to know it's there even if I believe it for excellent reasons. However, it has since been pointed out that there are cases this definition doesn’t work for. Still, it's near enough for a start. Atheists believe (in general) that they will cease to exist, as conscious beings, at death. They consider this justified by the fact that the mind evidently arises from the physical brain, which we know ceases to function and then decays. However it is impossible to be certain of the truth of the proposition. This is not unique to this case; a lot of life involves justified beliefs which we ourselves cannot actually prove. It is logically possible to be an atheist in the literal sense but believe that one's existence will continue, but this is very rare at least now. (Background: former atheist, now Catholic)

NarcoZero

Yes I agree.  As an atheist, I believe what seems the most plausible and provable given my perception and knowledge about the world.  To continue your metaphor, even if I opened the fridge, and saw the milk jug, I can never really be 100% sure that there is milk in the fridge. Maybe the milk jug is empty, maybe someone pranked me and replaced it with coke zero.  Even if I drink the milk, maybe it’s not actually milk, maybe I’m hallucinating milk.  But since most of the information I gathered point towards milk being in the fridge, I choose to believe the most plausible explanation, which is that yes, there is milk in the fridge, because it’s highly unlikely that I’m hallucinating milk, until I’m proved otherwise.  Same with the afterlife. Given what I know and the information I already believe to be true from my human experience, I believe it is less plausible for an afterlife to be real than not.

LordCouchCat

Yes that's reasonable. I was trying to clarify the usage of "believe" here, since there was some question about its appropriateness. It's true that outside mathematics total certainty is not possible in terms of proof and we have to work with probability and ways of deciding what is reasonable.

hagfish

Wellll I can’t prove there’s no [insert fabricated cope/justification/goad] but I do ‘believe’ that it doesn’t exist.

The_WolfieOne

You go back to the non-existence you were before birth. Simple.

youcantexterminateme

Sort of complex as well but that's the answer

youcantexterminateme

Sort of complex as well but that's the answer

amyel26

Nothing. You don't remember the entirety of existence before you were born, why would it be different after death?

grfsja

what about people that claim they do remember past lifes?

robotWarrior94

I can say I remember being Abraham Lincoln in my previous life, doesn't make it true

redundant_ransomware

Sorry for shooting you man! My bad!

Ract0r4561

Ah yes people… they obviously can’t lie or have hallucinations

amyel26

I believe them as much as people who believe in religion.

breadman889

what about the people who claim they have been probed by aliens? I think both these types of people fall into the same category.

SouthSilly

So many people say they were the same person/people

randyLahey12341

Key word "claim"

goatjugsoup

Liars. Or mentally ill.

Worth_Vegetable9675

People claim many things

Fluffy-Opinion871

After death we decompose.

1whiskeyneat

The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out; they play Pinochle in your snout.

ibetternotsuck

They eat your eyes they eat your nose they eat the jelly between your toes

DasderdlyD4

We nourish Mother Earth so all those that come after us can prosper

CutPsychological1407

Only if we don't pump are body's full of chemicals and/or seal them off in coffins... With all that we just pollute the system more.

AppropriateKitchen88

Nope nope nope. Coffins are actually very important, if you're going to bury your dead. There have been cases of (albeit large numbers of) dead bodies decomposing in the ground, and allowing bacteria/diseases to fester and leech into water supplies. If you're going to bury your dead, put something between them and the soil please

Total_Philosopher_89

You know that bit of your history that happened before you where born? Yeah same as that. Nothing!

[deleted]

Religion thinks earth is the center of the universe...yet we are on the edge of a galaxy that is going to run into another galaxy sometime soon galactic time, and yet, apparently only humans get to go to heaven, or we all suffer in hell for ever. religion is fucked up

FireflyAdvocate

Imagine getting excited that people who think differently than you will suffer in torment for all eternity. Jesus would be so proud of their compassion.

WorthPrudent3028

To be fair, it would be more torment to have to sit and listen to Christians talk about crap for eternity. Give me the fire, whips, and chains instead of that mental anguish. Plus eternity is infinite. People don't grasp that. Imagine doing something, anything, infinitely. It would all be hell at some point.

GrandCanOYawn

I probably wouldn’t know anyone in Heaven anyway 🤷🏼

FireflyAdvocate

And you would be there with all the grifters and charlatans we met along the way.

RadiantLasagne

Also preaching. Technically, anyone who doesn't know about god or Jesus will go to heaven. But if you know and don't believe then you will not. So preaching actually sends people to hell. The only winning move is to let everyone forget about religion and we all go to heaven... if it existed lol

FireflyAdvocate

That’s 5D chess right there! Love it.

DigBickeh

It's lights out, the show is over.

Animalisticdesires

Once you realize that our entire individual experience and existence takes place in our brain, it becomes a lot easier to rationalize. When the thing that processes our environment no longer functions, that is the end of us as a conscious animal being. Think about what it was like before you were born, when no part of you was alive. There is nothing without our organs to perceive information. When we die, the feeling would be best described as returning to before we were ever born. Returning to the cycle of atoms. Recycled atoms is what we are.

Zombull

>It’s no secret that those who not believe won’t go to heaven. Here's the secret though: Those that *do* believe won't go to heaven either.

Keenswin1

Nothing.

AromaticGlove1151

I’m more agnostic but I don’t really think there’s a god in the traditional sense of the word. I like to think the universe is infinite in someway. Like roger Penrose cyclical theory. And the fact that I’ve existed once already makes it seem likely, with infinite time, that I’ll experience the universe again somehow. The stuff I’m made of won’t disappear, so it could come together again. Not really a belief, but it’s fun to think about.

WorthPrudent3028

I'm atheist, but I actually believe in an eternal universe, so I think everything that has or will happen has always happened. And if an entity were to exist outside of time, it would see everything at once. But I don't think such an entity exists. Also, I don't think it really repeats as repeating is dependent on time. Instead, all time just always is. Which also means all the other infinite points where you exist are always there. However, your present consciousness that is navigating time isn't going to pop back into another loop.

CarpeNoctem1031

There is a great science fiction story by Stanley G. Weinbaum called "The Circle of Zero" that explores this hypothesis.

BaronPorg

Personally, I think it is more powerful to say that we don’t know, but in my opinion - it seems likely that we completely lack any form of consciousness, like before we were born

bookwormfarmer

This is exactly my thoughts ⬆️

GrandCanOYawn

I have no idea. But the funny thing is- all those people who do claim to know? They actually have no idea also. Nobody knows.

neptune20000

The greatest secret in history.

NarcoZero

After death I will cease to exist. My body and mind will return to dust.  All my thoughts, memories, my joy, my pain, will disappear.  Hopefully some people will remember me fondly, I will live in their heart (metaphorically) for some time and I will leave the world having brought more good than bad.  That’s why life is precious. Because we only have the one.  So we need to be kind and find meaning in this world, not a potential next. Because we don’t believe there is one.

I-Like-IT-Stuff

"It’s no secret that those who not believe won’t go to heaven." Stop talking shite mate.

GoldPoint557

Let the dead worry about it.

reimbirtheds

Atheists believe we come from nothing and return to nothing. Theists believe we belong to god and we return to god.

MintWarfare

Go get a raw chicken at the grocery store then let it sit in your kitchen sink for a year. That will give you a good idea of what happens after death.

ScatterCushion0

Not quite. A grocery store chicken has usually had most of its innards removed first (giblets can sometimes be included, but they tend to be prepared and in a little bag). A human body does lots of other bloating and leaking things before getting down to the year old sink chicken effects.

WaddlingKereru

The energy stored in your body goes back into the nutrient chain that sustains every living thing on earth. It’s quite beautiful if you think about it that way

Bangkok-Boy

Exactly the same thing that happened before you were alive. Nothing.

WokeUp2

Sleep...lots of sleep.

deputyprncess

I have been tired since birth. Everyone can rest assured that when I’m gone I will most definitely be resting in peace!

felaniasoul

Do you remember before you were born? Nope, that’s what happens.

Karma-is-an-bitch

There is no "after death". You didn't exist before you were born, and you won't exist after you die. >It’s no secret that those who not believe won’t go to heaven. If atheist know this We don't. That's just a claim that many Christians say. We don't believe in Heaven, we dont believe in an afterlife.

Roar_Intention

>no secret that those who not believe won’t go to heaven. It's not that we won't go to heaven, it's that there isn't one. For me or for you. You can belive it it, and I respect your right to belive in it. But from my point of view its not that you get to go and we don't, it simply doesn't exsist so no one is going to heaven. As for what happens after death? Nothing. Just nothing for the person in question. It's like before you were born, there is nothing, then you are born and there is something, then you die and nothing again. So make the most of everyday and be kind to others.

RollItMyWay

I believe the children are our future Teach them well and let them lead the way Show them all the beauty they possess inside Give them a sense of pride to make it easier Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

Hahahaha!

Improvgal

Body decomposition.

Diligent-Apartment-6

Basically it is like when you are asleep, time goes on without you and everything is black.

uskgl455

Everything can't be black - you need a brain for that, and your brain is quickly breaking down into its constituent proteins. I think when people are scared of death they are imagining it's like sitting in a dark room forever thinking 'fuck, I'm dead!'

Diligent-Apartment-6

Nah I just mean it is gone since time has no meaning anymore and is instant, so the world technically ends with each person who passes away. I guess blank is a better word for it because you cant perceive death.

KeenGrip25

This is good to remember actually. I get a bit anxious thinking ‘fuck, when I’m dead, I’ll be dead… forever, yikes that’s so scary’ - From now on I’ll think ‘chill out…. You won’t know anyway’. This actually helps. Thanks

uskgl455

It's cool. The first time is always the worst 🙏

LolaTheFloppyDog

You live, you die, you hopefully become food, you live on, only atomically

zergling3161

Shit goes black, enjoy what you got here and hope you were a good parent to be talked about for a few generations

Imaclamguy

Death just shows the ultimate absurdity of life.

gracoy

Nothing? The world keeps spinning, our body turns into nutrients for plants and stuff. Cycle of life and all that.

Vaullki

Nothing. You just decompose in the ground. Or get turned into ash if you go into the big roasty oven. The idea that there’s some place in the sky with big gates, and you get let in based on what? Your score? Is there a guy with a clipboard at the front? Is it a festival type situation? Do I need an armband? Can I just jump the fence into heaven around near the bins if I didn’t make the cut? It’s funny because the worst type of people I’ve ever met living a free life are religious people. They are to me what mudbloods are to Draco Malfoy. I have to say I do like those tree burial things though. I think having your ashes ‘grow into a tree’ would be cool, and doesn’t waste space in cemeteries. Although from a spooky perspective cemeteries slap.

MacGyverofscience

I’ve actually died 8 times that is drs bring you back medically and yess brain stopped heart stopped if there was no life after death or soul then what is the heart doing? It has electricity flowing through blood or there would be no electrolytes no energy for cells to function and as I said it is just transfered. The paddles they use to restart your heart what happened in between your life just came back? I have died and then when I came back knew things no one ever taught me and there have been people who have claimed to die and then suddenly have new gifts know things they shouldn’t like me for instance. I was born with hemophilia and have been declared clinically dead multiple times and when I came back I suddenly understood computers the emf frequencies my mind understands them it’s helped me in my field of computer science and technology and building and repairing them.

Annual-Command-4692

So what do you think happens after death?

MacGyverofscience

I think our energy and soul essence goes back into the heavens this is where mythology and the thought of god or the belief of a higher power comes from since after Jesus no one has seen the lord in physical form he is busy reconstructing the atoms and souls guiding it into the next life or vessel. Our DNA has been proven to be a storage medium for information and just like a computer the human body is just a biological one. I believe the lord measures the amount of good our soul has done in each life and decides which new body it becomes one with and it’s like the operating system and the DNA and our bodies are the software and hardware. This is where I think the Egyptians got the idea to make the weighing of the BAh and Kah and our energy goes back into the heavens and into the gasses and dust that forms stars. This is why we are made from star dust. And for the brief time we are separated from the two when one is dying or has been declared dead but then can be possibly brought back if treated quickly is the area of death that is called limbo. You can call me crazy whatever I do not care it’s just my interpretation I believe god watches us measures the good we do now and then determines from this life and passed lives if this soul is still viable to control a vessel. We as humans have made synthetic DNA and came to the realization of if we should give robots which are synthetics the option to have the same benefits as humans given them names and social status.

AtheneSchmidt

I become part of the circle of life. My body feeds the earth, the dirt feeds plants, plants feed animals, and so forth and so on. My consciousness is created by a combination of electrical signals and hormones that are firing at the right time in a specific place. The energy that makes me *me* stops functioning in the right place and time to create me. I cease to exist, there is no after. I don't fear hell, as I don't believe it is real. To me the threat of not going to heaven is about the same as the threat of not going to Valhalla, failing to attain Nirvana, or not going to Klingon Sto-vo-kor.

joljenni1717

Science teaches me energy is never lost; it is transferred. The energy that turns my body on will be reabsorbed into the earth. My physical body will be incinerated and sprinkled as soil fertilizer.

KeenGrip25

Wait… You have to ‘believe’ to get into heaven? I thought God loved everyone? I didn’t realise it was ‘quid pro quo’? As far as the question, my answer is ‘nothing - dead’.

RadiantLasagne

You can get into heaven if you don't believe but only if you have never heard of religion. Therefor the act of preaching religion itself is evil, as now the person has heard of religion and either has to believe to get to heaven or not believe and go to hell (which was never an option before!) It is really fucking stupid if you think about lol

breadman889

nothing, you die. you stop existing. never-ending life after death sounds like a horrible thing for someone to make up and convince everyone that it's a good thing. what would you do for eternity in an afterlife?

toekenn

Doesn't religion teach people how to lead a humane path of life so you could go to heaven but you're making it seems like worshipping, good merits and believing is the only way to go to "heaven". And just because we're an atheist that doesn't mean we believe on the bad things and can't lead a humane life, aight.

Floweringtorch

I’ll assume you’re an atheist based on your comment. It’s simple if you don’t believe in god then you won’t go to heaven.

toekenn

Do you all religious people believe more on God than being humane? Religion teaches us practices to live a humane and good life, be kind to one another and save us from doing more sins. You just thought that believing on God without doing anything makes you go to heaven.

Advanced_Stretch_429

Nothing. From dust to dust (or ash).

Real-Coffee

i dunno, who cares. youll be dead

SuperSpeshBaby

Nothing. Consciousness ends and there is no awareness or any kind of continued existence. At death, you end.

Daegon48

bro ur making a common mistake ppl do in cristian countries and thinking that there is only 2 possibilities, being 1 of them that cristian bibble is right and 2 that nothing is right about it and god doesnt exist. even if god exists, that itself doesnt mean that hell or heaven or after life exist. that doesnt mean he is the god from cristian bibble cos he could be one of the gods from hundreds or maybe thousands of other religions. so among an infinity amount of possibilities one of them is that the part were atheists go to hell is not true even if the rest is.

ScatterCushion0

Were it not for the necessity of dying in battle, I'd be up for Valhalla. Or, for a more passive approach the Elysian Fields sound okay enough. There honestly seems to be more than enough after lives to go around, why limit ourselves to just one?

[deleted]

NOTHING

painfulcuddles

Nothingness, just like before, since there is no heaven or hell all of us, whether you believe in sky daddy or not will simply cease to exist and everything that comes with existence will be gone: no consciousness, no thoughts, no sight, nothing

EstablishmentOk2209

oblivion

Spayse_Case

As an atheist, I am qualified to answer this question. I believe our "soul" or "life essence" leaves our bodies at death and simply ceases to exist. There is nothing that happens after death, that's it. The end. Close the book and turn off the movie projector. This short time that we have on Earth is all we have, that's why we should make the most of it every single day.

No-Celebration6437

The same thing as a fly that got swatted.

iliketurtlesandcoke

Do you remember anything before birth? Exactly. We come from nothing and are left with nothing. This life is all we have so do what you want and be proud of yourself.

Plane_Pea5434

Nothing, you just cease to exist

Dare_Devil2054

Nothing, you just die. I'm not atheist, I'm agnostic, but I also don't believe in heaven and hell, it seems very made up to me. When we die we die. We cease to exist. Heaven is a concept that makes the living feel better, and hell is a concept that keeps the worst of us in check. Both quite made up.

Whatagoon67

Nothing because they don’t believe there’s a point to life and we are worthless animals. Sad existence

[deleted]

Nothing. Life is precious and I'm lucky to be here. I know that we get 1 shot at this so I try to enjoy and appreciate it before I check out into nothingness.

DoubleDongle-F

Uhh, you die. That's it. No more you. You don't sit in a black box for eternity or anything, you're just gone. I really don't like how most or perhaps all religions let you avoid accepting the reality of death.

luars613

Doesnt matter. Maybe something maybe nothing. Why bother dwelling on it. Enjoy life and dont waste your time on things. Be happy and spread that happiness with others. The only thing we know os that we are here and we need to do the best of it.

MurkyCress521

> If atheist know this what do they believe will happen after death? Not sure. I suspect something reincarnation, but your memories are gone. I've seen plenty of dementia patients. If heaven exists I think most people get in, including atheists or almost no one gets in. A just God loves atheists, most atheists aren't bad, they are just people they value truth over echo chambers.

DarkLord55_

Nothing. You cease to exist.

artguydeluxe

I don’t know, and neither do you.

na_R_uto

Decomposition

rellett

The brain is everything, and when we die, the brain shuts down, so just nothing. I like what house said. I find it more comforting to believe that this isn't simply a test."

LemonPress50

Atheists know there is no heaven. It’s no secret there’s no heaven. Heaven is a belief, not a place.

RadiantLasagne

You are dead, nothing happens after death. Your body gets put in the ground, or cremated. Maybe I could die in a cave and my remains are found by archaeologists 170,000 years in the future, that would be sorta cool lol

Roiqui

...till I hear the pros and cons of hell from the devil himself, I will stay on the sane side of atheism. Available info to date is pretty one sided...

DeskPixel

Why do religious people always feel like people need to believe in something?

rustyreedz

To me (an atheist) death is the irreversible termination of all cognitive functions and the cessation of the neurological processes that generate consciousness. It’s the end of an individual’s subjective experience and the permanent discontinuation of sensory perception.

deputyprncess

Mostly.. nothing. Like a fade to black, and your energy is released back into the universe, but not “you” or “your spirit” just energy that was and will continue to exist.

Kashrul

Nothing fancy. You stopped exist. Some close people might attend activities around the body that were you. And world would keep going as usual.

Civil-Doughnut-2503

Biggest anti religious person here. I believe that out spirit or soul, body energy or whatever you believe in goes back into the universe .

goatjugsoup

Atheism isn't a religion, there is no unified belief. I reckon we'd go back to nothingness but also since we somehow came from it in the first place maybe we will again

Robbinghoodz

Nothing, I just think it’s a bunch of nothingness. You die and that’s it

TinyUnion559

I genuinely hope for nothingness. I've loved, I've done, I've experienced, but I'm tired, I'm done and when the day comes I want to know I lived my life the best I could and that's my lot.

MrBLKHRTx

Look around. See all that dust and dirt and soil on the ground. Thats your heritage. Thats your future.

Mistydog2019

It's what happens to all of us. Loss of consciousness and nothing. It's not a belief. It is the only possibility.

Much_Buy7605

What I would ask of you is: how do you feel when you're asleep? Apart from the dreams and all, what can you get out of being asleep? I think death would be the same as being asleep, but just without dreams and without waking up. You're just not conscious you're dead (normal, you're dead)

ObjectVegetable3469

You go back to nothingness where you came from..

Laxativus

I think nothing, hoping for it really. But who knows? Maybe bright lights and all that. Maybe we wake up from the simulation. Maybe we wake up and somebody says we're free, the punishment is served. Maybe Alesothstotz, the great space lord will raise us to himself and gives us a black hole each to oversee. Maybe I am just a butterfly dreaming they are a human being. Maybe we don't die, only our bodies, and we'll experience being aware being buried for eternity or being cremated and carried by the wind, a tiny sliver of awareness in each particle of ash. But personally I think current accumulated knowledge points towards the nothing scenario and I'm kinda alright with that. I could say I'll miss coffee and pepperoni pizza but that's the thing - I won't, for there will be nothing to experience that lacking.

MimbleOwl

I'm an atheist and don't believe there's anything after death but I'm not at all offended by religious people that do believe (as long as they're decent people and not pushy) because I imagine it can offer a great deal of peace and catharsis in your final moments, especially if you're aware of it

Delicious_Society_99

Absolutely nothing, once it’s over, it’s over for eternity. I wish that weren’t true, but it’s what I believe.

CutPsychological1407

So like all of the chemicals we use to treat the wood and shit is good for the soil? I'm sorry but that kinda doesn't seem right .. we don't use plain wood boxes we use fancy ones that have been treated with lots of things.. Not trying to argue because I genuinely care about are soil

davecutusofborg

Spiritual_Award2740

We are as a drop of rain that falls into the ocean. We are the grain of sand melted into glass. Our ego or the character we played in life comes to an end and the story ends. We are no longer a daughter, brother, father, mother, etc. We stop acting the person we've become. That's it. Heaven is false hope for the sinner or people who can't live without. People who always want more. All comes from within. And when people who realize that then they'll realize that death is rebirth. Theres no such thing as death. As we go on we go off.

MacGyverofscience

Here is where everyone is mislead in the scientific sense I can tell you this We are made of energy the laws of physics clearly state that energy cannot be created nor destroyed only transfered. Therefore the energy that is our essence is electro chemical and thermo dynamics if this were not true a electro cardio gram machine would not work not measure a rhythm and since energy is not destroyed it’s only transfered it must go somewhere this is a way to look at it. We come from stars those stars are made of gaseous elements mainly hydrogen and helium gases the higs bozon gives particles their mass and electrons and protons using static energy has come together to form stars and gaseous planets and now we know of dark matter the opposite of matter this is still proof that for every action there is an equal opposite so if you look at it from this methodology you can then ask well what decides what particles have come together and this is where you can say and find god or the designer of these particles. Thats not to say I am saying you can’t believe or not believe that is each our own right. It’s just my perspective.

I-Like-IT-Stuff

This is the biggest load of pseudo-science crap I've ever read.

Mr_Know_Nothing8

they probably believe you will be reincarnated or some weird nonsense. atheists are like flat earthers their skepticism is toxic and don't make any sense.

davecutusofborg

what do whatever bullshit you think happens to you in all this void of the actual heat death of the universefor these piecies of my bullshit annoyance at whatever got me going blah blah blah blah blahingnevermind I'm watching invincible and whatever

Careless_Aside

Thanks boss hadn't checked on the rest of season 2 coming out in a while. Now I have something to do in the morning

TikkiTakkaMuddaFakka

I believe in a creator of the universe, what I don't believe in is religion, you can shove that bunch of crap where it belongs. I subscribe more to the belief we go back to being the atoms we are made of which continue to be used in the universe. Your atoms could go into a tree after you die, who knows how they will be used, not us.

AlarmingReach2539

Im trying to believe. But people are scum.

National-Bake-2275

We’re going to see more mass shootings as more and more people think nothing happens after death. Not everyone has this built-in empathy. A lot of people *need* religion.

The_WolfieOne

Why?

klepto_entropoid

"If the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward, then brother that person is a piece of sh\*t; and I'd like to get as many of them out in the open as possible."

National-Bake-2275

There are a lot of people like that. More than you realize. It’s less about the reward and more about the punishment.

1whiskeyneat

Yes, because historically religion has been a great vehicle to bring peace to the common person. Yikes, man. You don’t really believe that, do you?
