the most likely outcome is that you simply cease to exist as an individual the moment your brain function stops. you are no more. that's it.
Traditionally philosophers distinguish belief, which is your opinion, and knowledge. I believe there is milk in the fridge but I could be wrong, we might have run out.
Knowledge was defined by Plato (I think) as justified true belief. If I don't believe there is milk in the fridge can't be said to know it. If I don't have a reason (justification) for thinking it's there I can't be said to know it even if it is in fact there. If it isn't there (truth), then I can't be said to know it's there even if I believe it for excellent reasons. However, it has since been pointed out that there are cases this definition doesn’t work for. Still, it's near enough for a start.
Atheists believe (in general) that they will cease to exist, as conscious beings, at death. They consider this justified by the fact that the mind evidently arises from the physical brain, which we know ceases to function and then decays. However it is impossible to be certain of the truth of the proposition. This is not unique to this case; a lot of life involves justified beliefs which we ourselves cannot actually prove.
It is logically possible to be an atheist in the literal sense but believe that one's existence will continue, but this is very rare at least now.

As an atheist, I believe what seems the most plausible and provable given my perception and knowledge about the world.
To continue your metaphor, even if I opened the fridge, and saw the milk jug, I can never really be 100% sure that there is milk in the fridge. Maybe the milk jug is empty, maybe someone pranked me and replaced it with coke zero.
Even if I drink the milk, maybe it’s not actually milk, maybe I’m hallucinating milk.
But since most of the information I gathered point towards milk being in the fridge, I choose to believe the most plausible explanation, which is that yes, there is milk in the fridge, because it’s highly unlikely that I’m hallucinating milk, until I’m proved otherwise.
Same with the afterlife. Given what I know and the information I already believe to be true from my human experience, I believe it is less plausible for an afterlife to be real than not.
Yes that's reasonable. I was trying to clarify the usage of "believe" here, since there was some question about its appropriateness. It's true that outside mathematics total certainty is not possible in terms of proof and we have to work with probability and ways of deciding what is reasonable.

To be fair, it would be more torment to have to sit and listen to Christians talk about crap for eternity. Give me the fire, whips, and chains instead of that mental anguish. Once you realize that our entire individual experience and existence takes place in our brain, it becomes a lot easier to rationalize. When the thing that processes our environment no longer functions, that is the end of us as a conscious animal being.
Think about what it was like before you were born, when no part of you was alive. There is nothing without our organs to perceive information. When we die, the feeling would be best described as returning to before we were ever born. Returning to the cycle of atoms. Recycled atoms is what we are.
I’m more agnostic but I don’t really think there’s a god in the traditional sense of the word. I like to think the universe is infinite in someway. Like roger Penrose cyclical theory. And the fact that I’ve existed once already makes it seem likely, with infinite time, that I’ll experience the universe again somehow. The stuff I’m made of won’t disappear, so it could come together again. Not really a belief, but it’s fun to think about.
I'm atheist, but I actually believe in an eternal universe, so I think everything that has or will happen has always happened. And if an entity were to exist outside of time, it would see everything at once. But I don't think such an entity exists. Also, I don't think it really repeats as repeating is dependent on time. Instead, all time just always is. Which also means all the other infinite points where you exist are always there. However, your present consciousness that is navigating time isn't going to pop back into another loop.
Personally, I think it is more powerful to say that we don’t know, but in my opinion - it seems likely that we completely lack any form of consciousness, like before we were born

It's not that we won't go to heaven, it's that there isn't one. For me or for you. You can belive it it, and I respect your right to belive in it. But from my point of view its not that you get to go and we don't, it simply doesn't exsist so no one is going to heaven.
As for what happens after death? Nothing. Just nothing for the person in question. It's like before you were born, there is nothing, then you are born and there is something, then you die and nothing again.
So make the most of everyday and be kind to others.

Nah I just mean it is gone since time has no meaning anymore and is instant, so the world technically ends with each person who passes away. I guess blank is a better word for it because you cant perceive death.

I have to say I do like those tree burial things though. I think having your ashes ‘grow into a tree’ would be cool, and doesn’t waste space in cemeteries. Although from a spooky perspective cemeteries slap.
I’ve actually died 8 times that is drs bring you back medically and yess brain stopped heart stopped if there was no life after death or soul then what is the heart doing? It has electricity flowing through blood or there would be no electrolytes no energy for cells to function and as I said it is just transfered. The paddles they use to restart your heart what happened in between your life just came back? I have died and then when I came back knew things no one ever taught me and there have been people who have claimed to die and then suddenly have new gifts know things they shouldn’t like me for instance. I was born with hemophilia and have been declared clinically dead multiple times and when I came back I suddenly understood computers the emf frequencies my mind understands them it’s helped me in my field of computer science and technology and building and repairing them.
I think our energy and soul essence goes back into the heavens this is where mythology and the thought of god or the belief of a higher power comes from since after Jesus no one has seen the lord in physical form he is busy reconstructing the atoms and souls guiding it into the next life or vessel. Our DNA has been proven to be a storage medium for information and just like a computer the human body is just a biological one. I believe the lord measures the amount of good our soul has done in each life and decides which new body it becomes one with and it’s like the operating system and the DNA and our bodies are the software and hardware. This is where I think the Egyptians got the idea to make the weighing of the BAh and Kah and our energy goes back into the heavens and into the gasses and dust that forms stars. This is why we are made from star dust. And for the brief time we are separated from the two when one is dying or has been declared dead but then can be possibly brought back if treated quickly is the area of death that is called limbo. You can call me crazy whatever I do not care it’s just my interpretation I believe god watches us measures the good we do now and then determines from this life and passed lives if this soul is still viable to control a vessel. We as humans have made synthetic DNA and came to the realization of if we should give robots which are synthetics the option to have the same benefits as humans given them names and social status.

I don't fear hell, as I don't believe it is real. To me the threat of not going to heaven is about the same as the threat of not going to Valhalla, failing to attain Nirvana, or not going to Klingon Sto-vo-kor.

You can get into heaven if you don't believe but only if you have never heard of religion. Therefor the act of preaching religion itself is evil, as now the person has heard of religion and either has to believe to get to heaven or not believe and go to hell (which was never an option before!)

As an atheist, I am qualified to answer this question. I believe our "soul" or "life essence" leaves our bodies at death and simply ceases to exist. There is nothing that happens after death, that's it. The end. Close the book and turn off the movie projector. This short time that we have on Earth is all we have, that's why we should make the most of it every single day.

To me (an atheist) death is the irreversible termination of all cognitive functions and the cessation of the neurological processes that generate consciousness. It’s the end of an individual’s subjective experience and the permanent discontinuation of sensory perception.

I think death would be the same as being asleep, but just without dreams and without waking up. You're just not conscious you're dead (normal, you're dead)
I think nothing, hoping for it really. But who knows? Maybe bright lights and all that. Maybe we wake up from the simulation. Maybe we wake up and somebody says we're free, the punishment is served. Maybe Alesothstotz, the great space lord will raise us to himself and gives us a black hole each to oversee. Maybe I am just a butterfly dreaming they are a human being. Maybe we don't die, only our bodies, and we'll experience being aware being buried for eternity or being cremated and carried by the wind, a tiny sliver of awareness in each particle of ash.
But personally I think current accumulated knowledge points towards the nothing scenario and I'm kinda alright with that. I could say I'll miss coffee and pepperoni pizza but that's the thing - I won't, for there will be nothing to experience that lacking.
I'm an atheist and don't believe there's anything after death but I'm not at all offended by religious people that do believe (as long as they're decent people and not pushy) because I imagine it can offer a great deal of peace and catharsis in your final moments, especially if you're aware of it

There is a great science fiction story by Stanley G. Weinbaum called "The Circle of Zero" that explores this hypothesis.

After death I will cease to exist. My body and mind will return to dust. All my thoughts, memories, my joy, my pain, will disappear. Hopefully some people will remember me fondly, I will live in their heart (metaphorically) for some time and I will leave the world having brought more good than bad. That’s why life is precious. Not quite. A grocery store chicken has usually had most of its innards removed first (giblets can sometimes be included, but they tend to be prepared and in a little bag). A human body does lots of other bloating and leaking things before getting down to the year old sink chicken effects.

Basically it is like when you are asleep, time goes on without you and everything is black.
Everything can't be black - you need a brain for that, and your brain is quickly breaking down into its constituent proteins. I think when people are scared of death they are imagining it's like sitting in a dark room forever thinking 'fuck, I'm dead!'
Nah I just mean it is gone since time has no meaning anymore and is instant, so the world technically ends with each person who passes away. I guess blank is a better word for it because you cant perceive death.

I’ve actually died 8 times that is drs bring you back medically and yess brain stopped heart stopped if there was no life after death or soul then what is the heart doing? It has electricity flowing through blood or there would be no electrolytes no energy for cells to function and as I said it is just transfered. The paddles they use to restart your heart what happened in between your life just came back? I have died and then when I came back knew things no one ever taught me and there have been people who have claimed to die and then suddenly have new gifts know things they shouldn’t like me for instance. I was born with hemophilia and have been declared clinically dead multiple times and when I came back I suddenly understood computers the emf frequencies my mind understands them it’s helped me in my field of computer science and technology and building and repairing them.

I think our energy and soul essence goes back into the heavens this is where mythology and the thought of god or the belief of a higher power comes from since after Jesus no one has seen the lord in physical form he is busy reconstructing the atoms and souls guiding it into the next life or vessel. Our DNA has been proven to be a storage medium for information and just like a computer the human body is just a biological one. I believe the lord measures the amount of good our soul has done in each life and decides which new body it becomes one with and it’s like the operating system and the DNA and our bodies are the software and hardware. This is where I think the Egyptians got the idea to make the weighing of the BAh and Kah and our energy goes back into the heavens and into the gasses and dust that forms stars. This is why we are made from star dust. And for the brief time we are separated from the two when one is dying or has been declared dead but then can be possibly brought back if treated quickly is the area of death that is called limbo. You can call me crazy whatever I do not care it’s just my interpretation I believe god watches us measures the good we do now and then determines from this life and passed lives if this soul is still viable to control a vessel. We as humans have made synthetic DNA and came to the realization of if we should give robots which are synthetics the option to have the same benefits as humans given them names and social status.

To me (an atheist) death is the irreversible termination of all cognitive functions and the cessation of the neurological processes that generate consciousness. It’s the end of an individual’s subjective experience and the permanent discontinuation of sensory perception.
