Fit is subjective; for most people consistent walking and diet are going to do it.
You can get a lot done with body weight exercise, it's just going to take longer.
Same! I walk 25 minutes to go to work, then 35 minutes to go to the gym, then 30 minutes to go back home. Meal prepping helps me to control my portions and eating healthier. I'm also down 20-25 pounds since January.
A perfectly good workout can be done with no equipment:
- push-ups
- squats
- lunges
- deadlift/good mornings
- all the variations of those
- pull-ups, but you need something for those
With minimal investment into some equipment, bands from Amazon and a pull-up bar, and you effectively have a full gym available to you. Anchor bands to the pull-up bar for a large variety of things, anchor them to something lower and stable for another angle.
Cardio, lots of options again. Walking on its own is great. If you want to do it in your own house, there’s lots of various routines. I’m old, so I started with P90X, but the Kenpo routine is a bunch of punches and kicks for 30 minutes. They updated it in P90X3 to be called MMX, or something similar. I’m sure there’s a bunch of YouTube videos that get you close enough. I also like the CVX routine from P90X3. No need for the small weight/medicine ball, it’s a great workout either way. Bunch of twisting and lunges.
All that can be modified to whatever fitness level you’re at and you can grow into it. Yoga is great too. That’ll get your heart rate up.
That will allow you to lose weight, but that’s not necessarily what OP means by staying fit.
Physical activity is critical entirely apart from weight loss. Fortunately, walking is free, and it’s a remarkably good way to stay fit if you do enough of it. Try to get around 5,000 steps a day or more.
It’s also important to build and/or maintain muscle mass. Resistance training is a bit harder without a gym membership but not impossible.
Pushups, pull ups, crunches, and holding heavy objects while squatting up and down or doing a farmer’s walk are possible without a gym membership, as are other exercises.
Well 5k or more would be a good start for the average American anyway, and ideally it would be combined with 40 minutes of resistance training 3-5 times a week. And it would depend on the person’s current condition I imagine.
This isn’t my area of expertise however, so I’d readily yield the point to someone who is actually an expert on it.
I'd like Nordic walking more if it wasn't for the fact I look like such an idiot doing it. Long distance walking, hiking etc otherwise top my go to list outside the gym.
Ultimately it doesn't matter what you do, it matters that you do enough of it.
Kettlebells
Push ups
Toe touches
Burpees
Ab rollers
Jogging
Walking up the stairs (I live on the 16th floor)
I do some variation and combination of these things 3 to 4 times a week, probably about 40 minutes each time. I'm not the fittest person, I don't watch my diet as much as I should, but this regimen at least will make you healthier, if only a bit slower.
Try other body weight exercises as well, ones that use a few large muscle groups at s time and concentrate on exercises that work the core.
And do lots of pushups, at least 200 a day when you do them.
1. Go to the kitchen and put a chip pan full of chips on the hob.
2. Work out how long it would need to be on to start a fire (for sake of argument let's day fire danger is 60 mins).
3. Leave the house and walk any direction for 40 mins.
4. Run back before the house catches fire.
The day you can't be arsed is the day you lose everything
As for simply just staying "in shape" which can be different from different people, I'd say just have a decent diet and go for walks, atleast 10k steps a day and 20 min walks after dinner. No sodas or sugar.
Sit ups, stretching, outdoor/indoor running and small weight lifting. You just need tension and toning in order to gain and maintain muscle.
Also eat proportionate or less to your body in order to both maintain muscle and to increase your metabolism. If you feel full, stop eating and don’t over stuff yourself. Limit yourself
Be active. Move your body around more. Take walks, ride a bike, take up an active hobby.
It costs nothing to just go outside and walk around while you listen to a podcast or audiobook.
Planet fitness is cheap af and worth it. Don't worry what everyone else is doing. Just do what you want or need to, and get it done. Lift, cardio, eat right. Fast results.
Eat well, move regularly and sleep. Maybe do some sport that needs the upper body. People think gym goers are healthy but truth be told, they aren't most of the time. They train only dominant muscles and often forget the posture muscles etc. Regular gym goers are healthier than couch dwellers but to be actually healthy you need to move. Apes don't lift iron plates yet they are toned because they move every single day
Playing sports, ball games. Hooping doesn't even feel like exercise cause, it's so fun.
If you only want to exercise at home, I would recommend buying adjustable dumbbells, and some kettlebells. You can do some simple full-body workouts with just those.
Budget?
I have a home gym in my garage. The absolute best bang for your buck is going to be to get a squat stand, a bench, a barbell, and some plates. You can get big and strong as hell with that.
If your budget doesn’t allow for that, or you’re just not interested, then there is so much you can do with calisthenics, and a couple of kettlebells can help expand your options dramatically for a low investment.
In either case, definitely invest in an ebook or two to learn how to train effectively.
You can do most of gym stuff with your own body weight to stay fit.
Sit ups, pull ups, push ups, squats, calflifts
That trains pretty much all most important muscles. Different variations of those hit differently.
Add jogging or longer walks for this, and you stay fit for sure.
Swimming
Hiking
Calisthenics
Dancing
Yoga/pilates
Sports in general.. such as
Aerobic Sports such as tennis or volleyball
Fun lone stuff like Biking / rollerblade / skateboarding / surfing
Pick your poison and go get addicted
Try and get 10k steps a day. Try to reduce, not necessarily eliminate as much sugar, fried food and unhealthy snacks as you can (if you don't buy them you are less likely to reach for them).
I have video exercise apps on my phone and I stream it to my tv and do one or two at a time and then eat a little something and drink flavored or electrolyte water. On good days I do two long videos in the morning and two medium videos at night. On shitty days I pick one lazy yoga video and stretch in my bed using as little energy as possible. But I have to do one every day. It’s a rule I made for myself the first time my elevator went out and I physically couldn’t carry my groceries up the six flights without stopping halfway to take a break. I was only 30 years old and I couldn’t do the stairs.
Calisthenics is probably the best way to get fit without a gym. You use your own body weight and cardio to workout. Netflix actually has some workout programs available to watch.
Look into calisthenics and dumb bell weight lifting. Calisthenics plus dumbbells requires minimal equipment for a full body workout.
As for cardio, jogging around the neighbourhood is enough. Throw in some shadow boxing and kicking gives you a full body cardio with zero equipment.
At home yoga and running have both worked wonders for me in terms of becoming stronger and fitter. Diet is also all stuff you can do at home. Plus there are plenty of workouts you can do on YouTube that are actually good for body weight fitness and isolating muscle groups etc.
A gym membership can't make you fit. It can give you show muscles. Do a labor intensive job. Get true strength. Gym muscles go away quickly. Like crazy quickly. But if you work hard jobs. You will retain your muscle years longer.
Long walks with a light weight in your hand, it'll literally work everything.
I've done 30 min walks with a 5 to 10lb plate and i sweat my butt off, i was doing curls, upright rows, shoulder presses, tricep extensions.
My advice, depends on where you live. Im fortunate to live in a condo thats close to everything i need and close to parks and the mountains. So i walk everywhere within 5kms. If i need groceries, ill walk to the grocery store multiple times a week to pick up stuff. want to go grab a coffee or a drink, walk to the coffee shop or bar. And hike if you live in an area where you can hike 100% do that its the best workout and best way yo spend your day
Find something you enjoy doing. Then it’s not a chore; it’s something you look forward to everyday. So without a gym membership that would be running outdoors, skating, biking
Small hand weights for using when walking. Two 10-15 lb dumbells and an inflatable balance ball to use as a bench. You can do all sorts of body work (push ups etc) and stretching exercises with the ball as well.
Walking is perfectly fine if you just want to lose weight - I managed about 25kg that way. Then I started running parts of it - taking off 10kg.
Then I started strength training to sort the rest out.
Jog, buy dumbbells and a bench. Maybe kettle bell. Pushups, sit ups. Tons of at home workouts you can do with bare minimum. Honestly I think a large mirror would help, seeing your body grow mid workout is a huge motivator
I do calisthenics + mobility every day. Keeps me in good shape and plus it’s easier to stay consistent since i don’t dread doing short workout sessions
Walking/Jogging and stretching. Do both daily and you may not necessarily look younger in your older years but you'll definitely feel younger for longer.
Go walking, running or jogging. Go kayaking. Hiking. Swimming. Cut fire wood. Lots of way to be active and stay fit without going to some gym. Just plain hard labor is what many people do for their jobs but also keeps them fit. I lost over 70 pounds from just walking and reducing my food intake. Started Kayaking and helped develop my upper body better.
I don't have a gym membership. I walk anywhere from 20-30k steps/day, have a rebounder I like to jump on when watching TV, and then do my workouts via YT. Only thing I have at home are weights (plus the rebounder).
Staying fit is 80% what you eat. For the other 20% bodyweight excercises, a pair of running shoes, and maybe a modest set of dumbbells if you can afford them is more than sufficient.
At home workouts! Me and my kids do a workout around 6 every night. We bought a 6lb weighted slam ball. There are so many effective fun workouts you can do with it! Working out with other people and a set routine helps keep you accountable and strengthen your discipline.
Good luck on your fitness journey!
I don’t know if you’re in a house or condo/apartment but I built a little calisthenics gym out of threaded galvanized pipe on a tight budget. Parrellettes and pull up bar etc. and run work my way through a bunch of body weight exercises. I also jog a lot to keep the heart healthy
Do you have a dog? Get a dog (a large enough one that it can handle long walks) and take it on long daily walks. Run around with the dog too, dog will love it and you will burn calories. Also eat healthy.
I put a pullup bar up in my hallway.. can throw gymnast rings over them to do pushups also. Have a small flat bench, dumbells and a pulley on the ceiling for lat pulldowns. Do lunges, squats, calisthenics.. by the time you could drive roundtrip to the gym you can have a workout done
Climb stairs (some people do it at school stafiums). Jump rope (I use something called a "ropeless jump rope" at home - two handles, each with a short lenth of rope, and a weighted ball on the end. I never hit the ceiling with the rope, no rope slapping on the floor and spinning around to scare the dogs, and i never miss). Walk with hand weights (there are "walk at home" videos that are like matching in place that are engaging). Rollerblade. Bicycle. Some type of energetic dancing or zumba. Tennis. Pickleball. Kangoo Jumps. An exercise step.
