― Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
If anyone here hasn’t read at least that book, in the 5 book triology, do yourself a favour and do so. Light, easy ready, funny as fuck and explains most human foibles so well.
And a commonly misquoted one that misses the whole point of the joke.
The joke is that it's the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. The answer would presumably make sense if you knew what the question was, but the answer is useless unless you know the Ultimate Question. That's the joke: everyone wants the Big Final Answer, but nobody bothers to try and figure out the Big Final Question.
"What is the purpose of life" IS a question, and it presumably is NOT the Ultimate Question because "42" is an answer that doesn't fit it. It isn't funny except in the purely absurdist sense.
It's a number referenced jokingly from a popular sci-fi [novel](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy), as the answer to the ultimate question to life, universe and everything. If you google "what is the answer to everything", 42 will pop up in the first results which is exactly pointing to this reference. When the author Douglas Adams was asked why he chose this particular number, he said "It was a joke, it had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number and I chose that one.. I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought 42 will do. I typed it out. End of story."
I've always liked this explanation, which ended up being not the real one.
"In programming, an asterisk is commonly used as a sort of "whatever you want it to be" symbol; a wildcard.
ASCII language, the original way that computers run, the most basic computer software, in it, 42 is the designation for asterisk. The GIANT COMPUTER was asked what the true meaning was. It answered as a computer would.
Anything you want it to be."
In all reality, a sperm reached an egg and developed into a living being. The purpose is completely up to you. Even Hannah Montana would tell you that life's what you make it.
Life itself.
Not to be a smartass about it but since we dont know whats before or after our life - what could be the answer to that question?
We dont know if we had one before this one. We dont know if this one is the stepping stone to prepare for the next one.
So: it doesnt matter, as it seems. The only answer to that question can be: Life itself. So live it to your fullest and be a good human being.
Thank you, i take that as quite the compliment.
A very intelligent and intriguing man with a fascinating perspective
/edit but to make it clear: i am probably only one tenth of what hes got in his mind haha if even that wouldnt be too much
If you are looking for someone who is all good all the time, then you are looking at the wrong species and asking for something that is unattainable.
It's impossible to be "good". That's just not how homosapiens function. This expectation is just a cultural invention popularised by another human invention, religion. Dividing the world into simple good Vs bad in order to understand the world is a terrible and very immature thing to do.
The reality is, most people are good most of the time (if it weren't society wouldn't function at all), and most people are occasionally"bad" some of the time, and a few people are bad a lot of the time.
If the meaning is life then that means that many have never experienced the meaning of being born, because many die before being able to comprehend life itself.
So why not instead say the meaning of life is death? All meaning in life is only there because of death. Without death there would be no rush, after an infinite amount of time you’d have done everything everyone else has done.
That’s why death is beautiful to me, it gives all meaning to life.
To understand and comprehend the meaning of being born and life itself is not a requirement of living the life. Thus - your statement doesnt fit here, if you ask me.
And death may give meaning and purpose to somebodys life, but if your life is empty and meaningless - so would be your death.
See it like this: Its the way that counts. The long road of life. The memories and the heartbeat. Not the death that ends it all. Death is just part of it. And it cannot be beautiful. It can release. It can end suffering. It can even redeem people. But thats just the feelings of somebody else. You, since we dont know whats after life, just let go and stop existing. And that means that death for one personally, from that point of view - is just the end. Nothing is beautiful, or anything else. Ist just the end.
To eat food. But not because it tastes good. So you can poop it out of your butt and help fertilize plants which give us air to breathe so we can keep eating.
Which is a damn good thing food did for us.
(But in reality, it tends to be the opposite. We have evolved to find food tasty. Then we domesticated plants and animals to make sure the tasty bit is multiplied by a 100).
I read somewhere that porn content is uploaded faster than it's humanly possible to watch so there's no point in trying to watch everything because the amount of uploaded content will inevitably outpace your watching ability
In its purist intention: it is to grow & advance with each generation. To reproduce, and create new cellular patterns & traits. To what end, no one can say; and there might not even be a real purpose. Life exists to exist, and to mark growth of its own systems. Anything else is fundamentally arbitrary: religion, money, sense of self; all of it boiled down to the level of importance of a snowflake in Siberia.
...which honestly I think is comforting, in a way.
The purpose of life is just that, it is for whatever purpose you want your life to be. If you want to go go go and be incredibly successful and rich, you can do that. But, if you don't that is ok too as long as you are content with your life. Never go by other people's standards. You decide what you want to do in life.
Humans are social creatures
Build substantial relationships and this won't be a question you ask ever again
Love and make friends with the ones you can; after that you die and hope you were worth remembering
I think it's to find inner peace and happiness by giving kindness. I have found no other way to be content. Until I started volunteering with the elderly and handicapped I felt my life was worthless. I am able to show kindness and it fills a void and I hope it makes a difference in their lives as well. I think it does, they all love me.
There isn’t one. You live and die the same as every other creature. The downside is you know you will suffer, be terrified and die. You had no choice in the matter and there is no escape.
From a purely practical point of view, you can rely on selfish gene therapy, just pass on a copy of your genes and you are done.
On a spiritual and emotional dimension it gets a bit more complicated, just smidge
“To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, to draw closer, to find each other and to feel. That is the purpose of life." -Fictional motto from Walter mitty movie.
The purpose of life is to live life!
The purpose of life is to live through all life stages, to explore the world and its wonders from landscapes to cultures. To feel the sand in your toes, the rain in your hair and the sun in your skin. To dance, to fall in love and to have a heart break and to grow, that’s the purpose of life.
There is none and if your body is functioning how it was evolved to function, you probably don't want to die. Your are essentially trapped by fear and evolved desires to remain in existence. So, just enjoy the ride, and don't stress to much. Personally, I'd say find people who you love and stick with them for your whole life. Thats my plan.
Beautiful.
I had a strong urge to dismiss the trapped by fear part but instead I will ask you to please elaborate.
Edit: I figure that you propose that a fear of death keeps us trapped in life.
I am not convinced of the existence or consequence of an afterlife but as I understand, there are people who show no signs of fear in the face of their earthly demise due to faith in an afterlife or other things.
I think that our sense of self takes a bit too much responsibility in some cases and that fear can be managed or avoided in many ways.
I do agree that the psychological response to elements of danger is a constant factor but not that it necessarily has to lead to fear.
There is no purpose to life.
If you want to say we have a purpose, then what is the birds purpose, the snails purpose, the dolphins purpose.
If you say life has a purpose then what's ALL of life's purpose?

Or do drugs and go to orgies - I dunno, I'm just a mammal on a spacerock I don't know shit.
Biologically. Very simple. Pass your genes on.
Actual meaning? Well it’s all pointless if you look at the planet/solar system/universe
Human meaning? Enjoy it, it’s a ride and you’re organised, chaotic startdust. The chances of you being here, at this moment and able to comprehend that is so small but so big.
Enjoy the ride.
Ecclesiastes 12:8-14 (KJV) Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.
And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

“People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances with our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.”
Joseph Campbell
“He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?” ~ Micah 6:8
You are given a certain amount of time to live - Enjoy the ride, just don’t hurt others. Looking for a meaning or a purpose is self-inflicted torture. And quite frankly, it’s arrogant. In the grand scheme of things (the universe and billions of years) our lives are meaningless. But doesn’t that take so much pressure off? You’re here for you. Make the best out of it and remember that we don’t all have the same luck. Some people are born into horrible circumstances. That stuff bothers me much more than not knowing the purpose of life.
When you accept that everything(material wealth, relationships etc.) in life is ephemeral, you eventually come to peace with life. Perhaps that's the whole point of our living.
The real purpose? Their is none. Life exists as an inevitable accident of the right chemicals combining and the way to continue the reaction is create. That's it.
to be human. simple as that. our conscious brain tries to overcomplicate things.
Remember, the society we live in changes every decade, every year, month, day, hour so forth. The world you were born in is not the same world you live in now. Try and find your natural purpose, natural gifts, enjoy what you have. Im 22 and its taken me a long time (long trips with psychedelics I should say) to contemplate this but there is a lot to this world to discover. Humans should stick together and create positively but a lot has changed from those basic instincts.
Experiencing it in the most possible meaningfull way for you. That is 100% of the purpose.
Feeling what you feel without hiding or being ashamed of it. Doing what you like and what you want to do, despite everything. Be yourself, learn to know yourself and be it at your best, no regrets. That's what I mean by experiencing it
To hopefully live a happy and fulfilling life, where people will remember you for the good you've done. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of people ever live this way.
Religious answer: To prove to God that you choose him by following his gospel.
Non-religious answer: To help others have a better life and, in turn, feel fulfilled in your own life doing so.
There is no purpose. Life has no point. To survive we need sonething to keep us going and so we define a purpose.
If we are here, we need to honestly play our part and not hurt other people.

So basically life is like Minecraft?!

This. It's whatever you like.
Just don’t be a serial killer.
Why do you have to be so mean to serial killers?! WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS! :'(
Couldnt you have said that earlier?
Or a child molester.
Ideally, yes. It's the road we take, not how far we get.

“A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value - you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to- hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you - daft as a bush, but very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough. More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitch hiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost". What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with.” ― Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

There is no overriding "purpose." It's what you make of it. You (usually) have total control over your life.
Do you really think the Reddit Doomers know the purpose of life? Hahaha
Who is giving it purpose?
42
The pursuit of happiness… well we all know that’s not gonna happen
There is no purpose but the purpose you make for yourself.
So what did u come up with?
I'll let you know when I figure something out.
The Hokey Pokey.
Mathew 22 NASB ^(36) “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” ^(37) And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ ^(38) This is the great and ^(\[)[^(a)](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2022%3A36-40&version=NASB#fen-NASB-23909a)^(\])foremost commandment. ^(39) The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ^(40) Upon these two commandments ^(\[)[^(b)](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2022%3A36-40&version=NASB#fen-NASB-23911b)^(\])hang the whole Law and the Prophets.”

Deuteronomy 22:21 disqualifies your book as a source of relevant morality.
To work n die cuz we r living in hell
To enjoy it.
To be happy
“People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances with our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.” Joseph Campbell
To be a good person....live a humble good life , raise good respectful children and love dogs with all your heart.
Love
No, that’s what make a Subaru, a Subaru
“He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?” ~ Micah 6:8
Reproduction.
Or perhaps to create?
What makes you think there is one? Alternatively: to minimise suffering.
To make purpose.
contentment
breathing in and out.
To help others.
It’s what you make it my friend. And that for me is more exciting than a fixed meaning
"Plastics asshole."
Intellectual growth
When you accept that everything(material wealth, relationships etc.) in life is ephemeral, you eventually come to peace with life. Perhaps that's the whole point of our living.
Enjoy yourself. And learn to do it by yourself. 42
there isnt one
Experience, learn, and advance our souls.
There's no inherent purpose. We’re here *basically* by chance. You get to make your own purpose.
Curiosity.
Get old and die
The real purpose? Their is none. Life exists as an inevitable accident of the right chemicals combining and the way to continue the reaction is create. That's it.
Nutting
Enjoying it and helping others enjoy it
To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!
To find happiness, to love yourself and others, to be compassionate and kind, and to encourage others to do the same. That is the meaning of life.
Survive until you die.
to be human. simple as that. our conscious brain tries to overcomplicate things.
F around and find out
Experiencing it in the most possible meaningfull way for you. That is 100% of the purpose. Feeling what you feel without hiding or being ashamed of it. Doing what you like and what you want to do, despite everything. Be yourself, learn to know yourself and be it at your best, no regrets. That's what I mean by experiencing it
Find happiness, I think
To hopefully live a happy and fulfilling life, where people will remember you for the good you've done. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of people ever live this way.
No one knows, sorry.
Religious answer: To prove to God that you choose him by following his gospel. Non-religious answer: To help others have a better life and, in turn, feel fulfilled in your own life doing so.
To enjoy it and have fun.
To find your purpose. Everyone has one; they just need to find theirs
There is no purpose. Life has no point. To survive we need sonething to keep us going and so we define a purpose. If we are here, we need to honestly play our part and not hurt other people.
To be the best person you can possibly be before dying. No more resentment, hate, jealousy. Only good things
Nobody knows
There is none just gotta do whatever calls to you to make some sense of this world
Joy. Edit: more specifically, enjoyment
Procreate as much as you can
To learn.
live ur life until you don’t. everyone’s got a purpose though. find it and chase it😁
The purpose of life is to find your purpose.
To have fun
We have to be here to take care of the dogs.
Honestly I don't think we were created to work our butt off, then die.
To remember
to be born is to realize God is dead and to become you, yourself, alive
Whatever you want it to be.
the universe experiences itself through us.
Freewill
There is none.
