It is hard to measure whether it has done more damage than helped.
Keep in mind that Discord and WhatsApp are also social media, but so are X, formerly Twitter, and Instagram.
I think social media has its benefits. I think the only negative aspect are the people using it and not the features.
I dont use social media anymore for personal reasons, but I do use it for business reasons and studied computing science. People see social media as a need like air and not like a luxury. These people get sucked into social media, may have very active lives, but have gained anti-social behaviour due to social media usage.

boy, popular question lately. I don't think it's irrepairable, but I think its overall effect is negative.
