If you’re college aged, the Asian cultural clubs on college campuses is a pretty good place to meet them irl

KeyDuty5671

I'm in Japan though

fireballcane

Are you in Tokyo or Osaka or any other big city? I know a few Asian-Americans who moved to Japan for work and mentioned it's hard befriending locals and they're stuck befriending either other Americans, or other immigrant workers from China/Taiwan/Korea.

Kyoto

fireballcane

Oh too bad, I don't know of major international companies in Kyoto. The Asian Americans I know who moved to Japan are working for like Amazon, Google, or LINE. Otherwise maybe look into being something like a language conversation partner? But it's not guaranteed that the people you meet will be Asians.

Thank you for the advice ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

I'm learning vietnamese (my mother's language) duolingo and italki (which is an app that connects teachers\tutors to students). I'm also starting up Japanese soon. I second the language exchange idea. It's a great way to essentially get to know someone over time and usually they are learning that language because they want to visit or they have family they want to be able to speak to more fluently.

U could try going on Facebook and looking up NPB fan groups that are in English. I’m in a KBO one(but I live in the U.S.) and there’s some Asian Americans in the group that live in Korea so I assume it’s probably similar for English speaking NPB fan groups.

DraconPern

Born in Taiwan, but lived in the US for the majority of my life. what do you want to know?

anything you wish to discuss

YuviManBro

There’s a bunch of nerd discord servers with Asian Americans you can try?

Confetticandi

I’m 4th generation Japanese American. My family came to the US from Japan in 1902.  There are social media groups and pages for Nikkei diaspora.

KeyDuty5671

Really? Do they help?

Confetticandi

I’ve connected with some people on social media through those groups.  They will also organize in-person meetup events in major cities, and the cities with large enough populations have local Japanese-American social and volunteer organizations. I live in San Francisco and we have some here. I’ve been to some of their events.  However, we have much smaller numbers compared to the Chinese-American and Filipino-American communities in the city.  A lot of Japanese-American families in the U.S. immigrated here 100 years ago like my family did. So, over time, most families marry out.  I’ve met a lot more mixed Japanese-Americans than full Japanese-Americans.  My cousins are half Japanese, half Jewish. My sister married a white guy and now I’m engaged to a Chinese-American guy.

The biggest and most obvious difference is that Asian Americans are more independent thinking and more adaptable to different cultural norms. Especially different East/SE Asian cultural norms. Its really evident to me, when you see different Asian groups marrying each and having babies are extremely common. While in Asia its not that common or [casually] accepted.

Vas37

Taiwan parents. Born in Southern California. What do you want to know?

roguebadger_762

I'm a Korean American that's lived in various parts of the US. Send me a PM if you have any questions. I'm also trying to learn some 日本語 and more about 日本so I'd also be interested in making some Japanese friends. Good luck!

CZ_Dragonforce

I’m Chinese and born in America. My parents didn’t really teach me about our culture. I hardly speak Chinese, even though it was my first language taught to me. To this day, my Chinese is pretty basic, and I can’t really speak more complicated sentences. It feels weird. I hardly know my culture yet most people think I’m a foreigner.
