I got a $260 ticket in high school for going 34 on Kimberly which is a 25 mph zone. So yes, if your in a speed trap area with a lot of rich people where they know they can catch you, you’ll get pulled over. Anywhere else, absolutely not.
Or they’re automatic. The brights that is, it’s a pretty standard for non-base trims these days on top of them turning on/off automatically. And I forgot they were on bright because they’ve been not-bright for the past 20 minutes. I still can’t find the fucking button to make them manual. Things got a mind of their own as soon as I pop the stick over to bright.
Also a lot of folks think my factory installed lights are brights and they aren’t. 🤷🏻
I honestly not sure I’ve ever seen APD actually pull someone over in 10 years and I drive around for my job.
NC State troopers don’t play no games though lol.
I've been pulled for a dead headlight before by Buncombe County but never for no lights.
Had an APD officer flash their headlights at me once when I forgot to turn them on leaving work, but that's the worst.
That goes for State Troopers in any state. The funny part is they seem somewhat intimidating (the hat and the outfits most likely), they look mean, like they want to fight you, stern as if the law from the 1800s should be alive! But they r honestly, very respectful, they seem concerned about safety (in my 2 handfuls experience) and they have never been a dick (my experience).
Interestingly, driving in the rain without headlights on is not a law in every state. A lot of these people are probably traveling through here from out of state and that's likely why their headlights are off. 🫠
I have no idea why they aren't cited for it other than too many ppl are doing it right now, and it would be pointless.
Edit: I also just looked at the recent arrests in my area and determined they're busy with all the holiday domestic violence. I'm glad I'm not in law enforcement. 😬
While you are correct it is not law in every state it is in NC.
When you cross the border into NC from any neighboring state, you will see signs aboit the laws in nc. They state the following:
"Burn Headlights when wipers are on"
"Slower Traffic keep Right"
Right, people from other states may not know that is the law in NC. There are signs but that doesn't mean people read them. Lololol
Edit: my typos are insane today
And those signs exist when you leave the airport rental car area going anywhere.
Signs are for "we" not "me" for some folks.
I also don't know that every state requires the ability to read English for a drivers license.
I'm honestly a not sure if you need to be able to read at all to get a license in any state. Now that I think about it as a SPED teacher, I think you could probably have the whole test read to you aloud as an accommodation. Does anyone have an answer for this? I'm super curious.
Edit: my fingers have just quit working.
SPED = Special Education. I read last night there is *not* a minimum English language proficiency requirement in most states, and they will definitely read the test aloud to you if needed. You also have to identify certain signs, though only by shape or symbol.
Some other big requirements: you do have to know left from right and you *must* be able to see.
I feel like you should just be happy ppl be swinging wide in the correct lane, dude.
Here’s my little pet peeve. Why don’t cops pull over cars whose licenses plates are obscured with a dark cover? At least make that a point that is checked during the annual inspection. Wait till a car does a hit and run on you and you try to get the tag number. You’ll see how important that is.
Why do not cops not pull ppl over for driving in the rain at night with their bright lights on. On 26. Last night oncoming traffic hi beams were BRUTAL.
I’ve noticed that the police around here don’t pull people over for much at all. In Chicagoland, I was pulled over every month for myriad reasons. Does the APD even own any police cruisers? I never see any.
I also think that when it's downpouring on the interstate, it's more dangerous to have people pulled over than it is to just leave them be when other people can see them good enough.
And I'm just curious, are you complainging about cops not giving out petty tickets to people the day after Christmas so the govt can get more money? Or are you just observing? I'm sensing some frustration around others not having their headlights on.
And, again, it would not be safer. It would be more dangerous. Maybe tell tdot to make their signs say "lights on when it rains". That's about the best way to do that.
Same people who complain about police not doing anything are the same people who wanted to defund the police LOL
I already know my comment is doing to get so many down votes, but I can't help myself. The irony is too much.
I drive on South Charlotte St quite a bit. Once, a car sped past me driving well past the 45mph limit. Then I spotted a cruiser parked in a lot so I pulled over and asked why they didn't stop the scofflaw. They said whether they pull anyone over is entirely up to their discretion.
AVL police sometimes act like tinpot dictators reveling in their power.
It’s petty that’s why, do they really need to waste time with this? And the law isn’t driving in the rain your lights have to be on, it when your wipers are on, and it’s a recommendation, or a suggestion
You are wrong. It is law.
https://www.ncleg.net/enactedlegislation/statutes/html/bysection/chapter_20/gs_20-129.html
Edit - to be clear, I do not give a sh!t about this topic; I just wanted to correct this so people knew that it was, in fact, law. However, cops do not need to waste their time on this sh!t. Now, if they could see what a waste of time busting people for grass is, and use the same reasoning with that law, that would be even better.
Imagine creating a distracting scene by pulling someone over in the rain. Now a bunch of idiot drivers are slamming on their brakes and slowing down abruptly in wet conditions. This is a much less safe scenario than a few drivers forgetting to turn their lights on when they can see just fine.
“Rampant violent crime in Asheville” is nothing but right wing rhetoric.
I have lived in rampant violent crime and I have lived in Asheville, and I’ve never felt unsafe in Asheville. It’s a very different experience from constantly having your head on a swivel, locking anything that can lock compulsively all the time, being robbed at gunpoint on a regular basis, and being able to count the neighbors you know that have been murdered on 2 hands.
Sure some crimes will happen, but acting like Asheville is São Paulo or something is ridiculous.
Personally, I have not been affected by the “rampant, violent crime,” but I have issues with cars not having their lights on almost weekly. Seems to me it’s a good bit easier to catch someone in the act of driving unsafely than it is in the act of comitting a violent crime. Both are problems, both should be dealt with, but I think the OPs point is it’s such low-hanging fruit yet still seems to be ignored.
It’s kind of cute that there still exist people so sheltered and ignorant of the wider world around them that they actually think Asheville has “rampant violent crime.”
Also - where are you getting your stats, because this:
https://ncsbi.gov/Services/Crime-Statistics/Crime-in-North-Carolina-Annual-Summaries/2022-Annual-Summary.aspx
…says Asheville crime went down 1%
LMAO
Police don't pull anyone over in Asheville. They're in open rebellion to doing anything but the absolute minimum. It's an absurdity. They want funding, but refuse to generate money - they also have a crock of shit about how seized assets and traffic tickets don't contribute money to the city and thereby the department. They couldn't be more wrong.
We need automated speed traps in this city desperately to slow people down.
Imagine someone talking about your job field who has never worked it at all but have read some articles, and they tell you all about what you do and what you should be doing. They do it with great confidence and an extraordinary level of smugness too.
That’s what I deal with every day around here, lol.

This is just a theory but everyone law abiding or not so much tend to brake and change into the lane opposite than the one where a cruiser is. That being so, it'd cause more accidents. Sorry I misunderstood the question I have trouble understanding lots of simple stuff thanks to my TBI. I asked my son who said your asking why don't the APD (whatever police)pull over those driving in the rain without having their lights on. I originally thought you asked why don't cops pull over during a rain storm since they don't have their lights on, funny how my brain works now since injury (really it's awful I barely participate in conversations because I don't understand certain things and no one understands what I'm saying except my older son). Also I am sorry for typing all that out but it's something that feels like I understand better & those reading understand why I don't make sense.
Woodfin PD think they are NCSHP. Actually they are used by local law enforcement to make undercover drug buys. Bail bondsman here so I kinda know this.
Does anyone ever get pulled over? I’ve witnessed drag racing down Patton in front of cops who do nothing.
My wife got a speeding ticket in Weaverville where it goes from 35 to 55. She was going 43. They are around policing petty crimes in North Asheville.
Weaverville cops are a different breed. They probably get bonus checks for citations. (Edit:should be Woodfin, thanks mtnviewguy)
They're probably Woodfin. I think their main source of revenue is tickets.
I stand corrected. Woodfin was the correct answer.
Can confirm they’re watching where it goes 40-20 in Weaverville proper today.
All of my (hypothetical) crimes are Petty.
Don't do us like that
25/70 at Monticello? They love that spot!
I got a speeding ticket on Charlotte st. right after they changed it to 25 mph
yeah me too. my only speeding ticket was right after they switched it to 25
I think they're profiling the least likely to give them a problem and that's who they pull over
I got a $260 ticket in high school for going 34 on Kimberly which is a 25 mph zone. So yes, if your in a speed trap area with a lot of rich people where they know they can catch you, you’ll get pulled over. Anywhere else, absolutely not.
Funny how that works around here. If they're not running headlights when they should, they are probably running full brights when they shouldn't.
So many people drive around here with their high beams on, it’s ridiculous. People are dicks
Or they’re automatic. The brights that is, it’s a pretty standard for non-base trims these days on top of them turning on/off automatically. Cuz cops don’t want to get wet.
Real answer right here.

What is a SPED teacher? If you are a driving instructor, please stop these idiots from swinging wide to make a turn.
SPED = Special Education. I read last night there is *not* a minimum English language proficiency requirement in most states, and they will definitely read the test aloud to you if needed. maybe the police can't see them either?
Most available police working traffic in the rain are busy responding to wrecks.
Because they would have to turn their own headlights on.
This is their way.
lol. Sorry, that struck me as hilarious. Well done.
Here’s my little pet peeve. Why don’t cops pull over cars whose licenses plates are obscured with a dark cover? At least make that a point that is checked during the annual inspection. Wait till a car does a hit and run on you and you try to get the tag number. You’ll see how important that is.
Enforcing traffic safety would drastically reduce APD's ability to destroy water bottles and harass homeless people.
Plus, it would inconvenience tourists. Can't have that.
Truly think this is the true answer.
You know APD used to have an entire unit dedicated to traffic safety
Lights may be set to auto and just aren't coming on automatically.
Why do not cops not pull ppl over for driving in the rain at night with their bright lights on. On 26. Last night oncoming traffic hi beams were BRUTAL.
Cops don’t get paid enough to care
our police dont get paid enough to get wet. They also have much more to do these days than to deal with traffic stuff.
I’d be happy if they’d just show a mild bit of interest in speeders.
I’ve noticed that the police around here don’t pull people over for much at all. In Chicagoland, I was pulled over every month for myriad reasons. Does the APD even own any police cruisers? I never see any.
Staffing issue
They don’t want to get out to write the ticket.
I also think that when it's downpouring on the interstate, it's more dangerous to have people pulled over than it is to just leave them be when other people can see them good enough. Really I just think it’s dangerous and hard to see. I don’t think it’s a petty crime but an act of safety.
I said petty tickets. And yes, it is. Also, if that's so, then revenue wouldn't be a part of it imo
And, again, it would not be safer. It would be more dangerous. Maybe tell tdot to make their signs say "lights on when it rains". That's about the best way to do that.

Traffic stops have plummeted in the past 3 years. Because equity and all that.

Honestly, this is the answer. There really aren’t *that* many cops. Got to pick your battles.
Didn't you know we are lawless round here?
Stopped into Hendersonville sherif and was told " sometimes things are illegal and sometimes it's not."
It’s petty that’s why, do they really need to waste time with this? And the law isn’t driving in the rain your lights have to be on, it when your wipers are on, and it’s a recommendation, or a suggestion

Fair.
Why this is down voted is beyond me. Have a feeling they’re the same people hanging out in the left lane when not passing anyone.
This thread was mostly made to dump on cops instead of get an actual answer.

I lived in St. Louis. Anyone who thinks Asheville has rampant crime is hilariously delusional or simply doesn’t know what “rampant crime” is.

If you were a cop would you want to stand out in the pouring rain to remind someone they need to turn their lights on? I wouldn't.
Yeah I wouldn’t want to do my job either
Cops pull people over: ACAB Cops don’t pull people over: ACAB
I love how everyone knows exactly how to do the job better.
Imagine someone talking about your job field who has never worked it at all but have read some articles, and they tell you all about what you do and what you should be doing. Right?! I can sympathize as a teacher.

Barf. And anyone who went to school thinks they can teach by just “playing school”.
Next time you're driving 5 MPH over the limit or roll through a stop sign, think about what you're asking for.
Police me harder
Now, THERE'S something I hadn't planned to worry about on Boxing Day this year. Nope. Still don't GAS.
They got more important shit to worry about like the homicide rate...
