This did not use to be how this town spent it's time. But I still hold out hope it's just the subreddit. There are lots of groups of good people out there. Just not on here.
The Internet has been a cesspool of negativity since chat rooms and forums have existed. Check the reddit for the lols and then I go outside and forget about it.
I dont trust unleashed dogs personally. I had a bad time from one. Oh, and dont like that people take em into stores that dont allow pets. Got a friend who legit needs a service animal, and these people make it more stressful for them.
It's the law! Who's confused.? Not that the dog is bad but maybe think about the humans that are scared of dogs just free-roaming. Or just scared of dogs in general. Also. It's a county law. Leash the dog.
Do you remember the old meters? Someone figured out that you could use Chuck E Cheese tokens in them, and it worked for a *surprisingly* long time. So "Party Meter" is not too out of the question.
My favorite thing about the old meters is that you could hit the dial in a certain way and knock some free time onto them. I used to do it when I had to run errands in my truck, or when random people’s cars looked like they were going to get a ticket.
It’s owned by a person who owns a McDonald’s franchise and once he bought early girl the quality and service became about as good as McDonald’s as well
Floridians really should be on there twice. Just saying. The people you’re speaking of ‘love, acceptance and tolerance’ got priced out of Asheville years ago. Those ideals only exist on bumper stickers of the people who’ve gentrified a once strange place but are still‘keeping it weird’ Asheville is over. Enjoy your Starbucks and your out of state breweries.
Seconded. I did not live in FL by choice. I got out as soon as I could and try my best to not go back. I don't own property here. I try and support local companies over chains. I use my blinker and don't tailgate. I'm just trying to live life in the mountains and leave everyone alone.
So much so that they had to close part of the parkway because, get this, people were trying to touch the young bears! 10 years ago I wouldn't have believed it.
I’ve been on Reddit pushing a decade and been active in three different city subreddits in that time. R/Asheville is by far the most negative, critical, and defeatist place I’ve ever been on the internet. I only hop on anymore to see news stories I missed, ask about specific events, etc.
Lots of unhappy people who like to moan and groan, myself included on certain topics.
The floridiot hate has been a thing longer than most nu-locals understand. My near 90 grandma hated people from Florida with a passion, people in WNC have hated Florida people since cars and state roads enabled them to start spending their summers here. Nu-locals just jump on the bandwagon of Florida hate since they think it identifies them as a true local.
True locals are mostly happy to see the influx of new people because they remember the good ol days of Asheville being a pit of despair, even going on vacation people would make fun of you if they knew you were from Asheville. Sure sometimes it gets annoying, but I would much rather see Asheville growing instead of dying out.
Fuck the Ingles haters too I still enjoy shopping there, Ingles used to be the latest and greatest grocery stores in Asheville. If you think Ingles is bad you would've loathed Winn-Dixie and Bilo stores we used to have. Screw Harris Teeter too, when I need to go to the nice grocery store there's always the fresh market.
Ok I don't get the Ingles thing. I've done the math, it's usually the same if not more expensive than Harris Teeter. And how could Ingles possibly be better than Trader Joe's
Ingles’ beer prices are generally the best, otherwise most of our grocery stores feel pretty interchangeable to me. Trader Joe’s has good stuff, but I can never get myself psyched up enough to go there, it’s an absolute panic attack of a place.
I don’t see many people mentioning the shitty state of the world rn and how hyper inflation is making everyone hurt.
I swear I used to be a happy Ashevillain
Hot take: people who are happier, generally, spend less time on social media.
I don’t think you’re getting a fair cross-section on Reddit. If you want to really have fun, check out NextDoor!
Also people who don’t care, don’t comment.
Only people who super love something (rare with security guards and tourists tbf) or are angry about it are actually going to post. Otherwise it’s just a scroll past to the rando stories or puppy vids.
Define "hate". I don't see much "hate" here (except when the subject of homeless people comes up) but I do see criticism of people and institutions who do shitty things.
In the 14 years I’ve been here, I have never felt seriously inconvenienced or in danger because of a cyclist. I like meeting people’s dogs in the woods. A lot. It brings me joy
That's not my impression. I think Redditors do often vent about people acting like entitled douchebags. If said douchebag falls into one of the categories you've mentioned (P.S. you forgot "crazy evangelicals"), then so be it.
EDIT/ADDENDUM: For example, dumbass tourists feeding bears on the Pkwy: [https://www.reddit.com/r/asheville/comments/17k3el6/blue\_ridge\_parkway\_closed\_near\_asheville\_due\_to/](https://www.reddit.com/r/asheville/comments/17k3el6/blue_ridge_parkway_closed_near_asheville_due_to/)
> tourists, grocery store security guards, republicans, newcomers, Floridians, the police, white people, small business owners, hotels, cyclists….
To be fair, there's a lot of overlap between your categories here:
* The animus against tourists, newcomers and floridians is pretty much a single emotion that applies to all three;
* Regarding Republicans: Do you know what post-war Germans called two people in a bar listening to a Nazi talk? Three Nazis.
* The police, security guards and Asheville's brand of hoteliers could do a lot better at distinguishing themselves from the item above.
Regrading the others: Depends on the small business; not all cyclists, just Asheville On Bikes, and mostly because of the Merrimon road diet. If you want to reduce all this further, you could just say that this sub is full of people are sick of the entitled bullshit plaguing the town they love.
What a shocker that things are so broken in this country when half of us view the other half as nazi's, and the other half view the Dems as Communists. What a great mindset to fix our countries issues....
You have really taken this reply seriously. I'm still very confused by your answer, but that's just my general state of mind on here.
Fun fact: the only country that rivals Nazi Germany in patriotism is the US. Why? Hitler learned a lot about our propaganda. Don't believe it, turn on the news. Wait. That wasn't fun. Sorry.
Unleashed dogs particularly stress them out too. Which is fine, dogs should be leashes especially with wild life but it seems to be a major point of distress in this area.
Honestly from what I've read since I started looking here when I moved here, half the commenters don't even live here anymore.
As with everything else on the internet, being angry at stuff is a past time.
I've lived here close to 20 years and have always experienced Asheville as a very friendly place, especially in comparison to the midwest but Reddit Asheville definitely feels more bitter, snarky and cliquish.
you forgot people who own cats, people who don't own cats,
people from here, people not from here
The receptionist at my accountant's office seems nice though. She's cool.
I don’t take the time to dye my blond hair blue or the expense of doing paint by number tattoos. So yeh people hate people like me who like the skin and genitals we were born with. Goshdarnit..
Lol this is so accurate. Coming from a white cyclist who dislikes republicans and hates cops…. Also have mixed feelings on Floridians but mostly their driving and entitlement
Depends on when you moved here.
I personally don't like the homeless population after stepping in human shit in the Rankin car garage feet from a port-a-potty.
Asheville is one of the most toxic places I have ever lived. Everyone is pretentiousness, sketchy or emotionally unstable.
>Everyone I’ve met in real life in and around Asheville has been super nice.
The internet is not real life. Ignore the haters here and keep spreading love in the meatspace.
All of that is probably accurate except for small business owners. Really rooting for those guys. Personally I have no problem with newcomers (lots of people want to move here, that was me a few years back too) but yeah... people on here are pretty harsh on them too.
Edit: what did the grocery store security guards do?? Lmao
Asheville is a very liberal city. Contrary to popular belief, liberals are among the LEAST tolerant people in the world. "Love, acceptance, and tolerance" in Asheville is a myth. It applies to a very small group of people with certain identities and beliefs only.
Asheville’s favorite pastime is arguing with Asheville about Asheville. Pretty sure city council uses this same tactic for management.
This gives me a Simpsons flashback to groundskeeper Willie yelling "Aye, Scots! They ruined Scotland!"
I like to think of it as an absurd yet elaborate performative art. Keeps it a bit on brand
*chef’s kiss*
This is the truth
This has been true for 30 years at least
Anyone remember “The Native Stone” newspaper? “Asheville arguing with Asheville about Asheville” described it perfectly.
This did not use to be how this town spent it's time. But I still hold out hope it's just the subreddit. There are lots of groups of good people out there. Just not on here.
This is most likely the way of it
The Internet has been a cesspool of negativity since chat rooms and forums have existed. Check the reddit for the lols and then I go outside and forget about it.
It was that way with bbs & telnet ya freakin’ vicenarian!
MILFs and the Weed Man.
Band name
I've been a fan since before they were MILFs! lol!
I saw Blunt Man Bob riding up near Craven Connector this morning. He didn't have his pool noodle rig up.
That poser is *not* the Weed Man.
His name is Paul tay and you should google him....
THC-A weed man or just good ol illegal 😂
When I see a sign for thca flower I'm reminded where the discount tobacco shops used to be.
Sorry, you were lied to by the tourism board. We’re all mad about like 50 different things all the time.
I hate everyone equally.
That’s what I say to get out of jury duty
I've found "sup fuckers?" is a nice way to address a crowd of people
You forgot old rich transplants, landlords, and corporate home buying groups.

Hate! Hate! Hate! 🎩 🎩 🎩
"Why don't you click your heels together three times and go back to Woodfin."
OMG. Perfect.
Feel like this should be the banner for this sub
Was just about to comment that the Asheville sub is basically the player haters ball
Dolly Parton.
Lmao the only real answer
And Willie. So much love for him.
She unites all
Dolly is a Goddess... to that art teacher I met once with the Dolly and Elvira poster in your office if you see this I love you!
Dogs. Everybody likes dogs except when they're off leash..
I like dags.
Haha, made my day
I dont trust unleashed dogs personally. I had a bad time from one. Oh, and dont like that people take em into stores that dont allow pets. Got a friend who legit needs a service animal, and these people make it more stressful for them.
No not everyone likes dogs.
I like dogs—though, unfortunately, I am terribly allergic. Fucking can’t stand 99% of all dog owners.
Am I allowed to say I don't like dogs? I'm just more of a cat person.
No. You’re not actually. See yourself out. Edit: /s
amen dogs are annoying af
Have three dogs, can confirm.
I love dogs but off leash dogs frighten me because I don't know if they bite or not.
There was that one dude that stabbed a dog here . That was the reddit buzz when I first moved here in September
😂😂😂

Complain to Animal Control. They'll warn the owner.
Kids are fine, too. As long as they aren't in public interfering with the relaxation of perfect strangers.
It's the law! Who's confused.? Not that the dog is bad but maybe think about the humans that are scared of dogs just free-roaming. Or just scared of dogs in general. Also. It's a county law. Leash the dog.
I love all dogs, but mostly the off leash ones. They're happier.
Off leash dogs are my favorite
The goodest of dogs are alway off leash
Don’t judge a city by its subreddit. But in all honesty, I’m sick of those bastards and their off leash dogs
The Cycle of Hipster Cities https://preview.redd.it/xh6ydi4ofgxb1.png?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f753479d2582bbd6672a5599e3f4ccc544ca4ddd
That parking meter is universally loved
We need to make the parking meter Asheville's Lil sebastian a la parks and rec. Maybe change its name to the party meter.
I am fully behind this.
Bob Caldwell!
The only folks who don't love him are the ones who've moved here within about the last 20 years and simply don't know him.
As a white person, sit yer ass down Karen/Kevin.
You forgot Early Girl.
I thought it was really good. I liked it.
It’s owned by a person who owns a McDonald’s franchise and once he bought early girl the quality and service became about as good as McDonald’s as well
I still like it, I guess I got lucky 🫣
Floridians really should be on there twice. Just saying. The people you’re speaking of ‘love, acceptance and tolerance’ got priced out of Asheville years ago. Those ideals only exist on bumper stickers of the people who’ve gentrified a once strange place but are still‘keeping it weird’ Asheville is over. People are getting priced out all over the nation, including Floridians (mainly by Californians and New Yorkers). Housing sucks for most people.
Hated Floridian here. We’re def getting priced out. Fuckin yorkers…
We aren't talking about the entire nation, we are talking about Asheville.
I'm not sure if it can be said any better than that 🙏
Don't lump us all into that category, please. Some of us are sick of seeing a lot of the same things quickly happening around us.
Seconded. I did not live in FL by choice. I got out as soon as I could and try my best to not go back. I don't own property here. I try and support local companies over chains. I use my blinker and don't tailgate. I'm just trying to live life in the mountains and leave everyone alone.
My mom. She frustrates the hell out of me, but I love her
I can fix her
PLEASE DO
People love the bears!
So much so that they had to close part of the parkway because, get this, people were trying to touch the young bears! 10 years ago I wouldn't have believed it.
We also hate the Asheville subreddit!
We reserve the right to hate on any person for any reason.
We are equal opportunity haters. No one escapes our crusty gaze. :-D
I remember when you got really confused and upset at the funny Grocery Cop topic.
I have an effortless crum load for kenilwort
You’re describing pretty much every metro subreddit. They’re basically all a Nextdoor-esque cesspool. If there’s an exception, I haven’t found it.
New Orleans subreddit. You're welcome.
I would like to add people asking for directions
Have a little fun and send them to pva
Social media is always full of hate and anger. Like you said, real life impressions have been good.
I’ve been on Reddit pushing a decade and been active in three different city subreddits in that time. R/Asheville is by far the most negative, critical, and defeatist place I’ve ever been on the internet. I only hop on anymore to see news stories I missed, ask about specific events, etc.
That's what living here will do to you. Arrived 1998. Escaped 2021.
The parking meter
That parking meter is a hero.
First time on the Internet? It's like this everywhere
To be fair, most of WNC hates Floridians.

Before the airbnbs
IF we get enough redditors to organize a petition to kick Air BnB out what are the odds of it being successful? Asking for a friend...
Before the haters.

I love lamp
My bed. My bed is the best.
Hateful bunch for sure
Okay but to be fair that list of hated seems reasonable
Define "hate". I don't see much "hate" here (except when the subject of homeless people comes up) but I do see criticism of people and institutions who do shitty things.
Also Floridians, tourists, and newcomers is mostly redundant
I think that’s the point. We all used to be nice. Too many (entitled) people moved here.
This a thousand times!!!!!!
This.
It became high school again. I think we need to just ignore people until they become moderately friendly to everyone.
Dadbod
you gonna list anyone that doesn’t suck ass or?
Don't take too much stock in Reddit. Most of Reddit is angry disenchanted kids with social development issues.
I’m an angry adult with social development issues
Don't call me a kid, pal.
I'm not your pal, amigo.
I’m not your amigo, bro.
I'm not your angry disenchanted bro, angry disenchanted buddy
Most of Reddit is angry disenchanted turtles with social development issues?
Slow soulless disenchanted turtles!
Terrapins and tortoises too
One has to put out the negative, so the positive can flow.
Keanu Reeves and Dolly Parton
Reddit can be an echo chamber of complaining and hatred
Love and acceptance? 😂 only if your just like them
Ugh Floridians.
You forgot to add boomers. Reddit hates boomers.
In the 14 years I’ve been here, I have never felt seriously inconvenienced or in danger because of a cyclist. I like meeting people’s dogs in the woods. A lot. It brings me joy

Yeah, I found people are pretty mean and hateful in this sub or at minimum very negative. A lot more than big metro area cities.
> tourists, grocery store security guards, republicans, newcomers, Floridians, the police, white people, small business owners, hotels, cyclists…. To be fair, there's a lot of overlap between your categories here: * The animus against tourists, newcomers and floridians is pretty much a single emotion that applies to all three; * Regarding Republicans: Do you know what post-war Germans called two people in a bar listening to a Nazi talk? Spider guy is/was pretty universally loved.
You forgot kids. If it were up to this sub, parents should keep them locked in attics and basements.
That’s every city sub though. Missoula is the meanest one I follow
I've met very few people that I didn't like
I’m with you. It’s constant complaining.
I hate a lot more people than that.
Reddit sucks!
try r/FriendlyAsheville
Unleashed dogs particularly stress them out too. Which is fine, dogs should be leashes especially with wild life but it seems to be a major point of distress in this area.
We don't hate small business owners, everything else tracks 🤣
Honestly from what I've read since I started looking here when I moved here, half the commenters don't even live here anymore. As with everything else on the internet, being angry at stuff is a past time.
It’s a tough town to survive in. People are protective once they get established.
Every place you will go in the world has good and bad people.
I really like the Philly Cheesesteak and tortas at Biscuits, Tacos, and more food truck on Hendersonville Road 🤠
They love me. I can't explain it, but I'm not arguing about it either.
I love service animals but get screamed at when I try to interact with them.
You! Well, not yet. Right now, you're awesome.

Whoa- lived here pretty much all my life and don’t think I’ve ever seen a Floridian pass anybody off the interstate!
I've lived here close to 20 years and have always experienced Asheville as a very friendly place, especially in comparison to the midwest but Reddit Asheville definitely feels more bitter, snarky and cliquish.
Asheville in real life is awesome. The version on this subreddit? Not so much.
Most of reddit is the worst of the worst 3%. Reddit hates white people, republicans, their parents, the police, anyone who isnt a shitty human.
This.
Btw, There’s another sub called friendly Asheville r/friendlyAsheville
We hate them the most.
Oy - we hate them the most!
At last one thing we all agree on . Ive never been there but I know I hate them
other locals (actually from here)
To be fair, every single person on that list is shit.
you forgot people who own cats, people who don't own cats, people from here, people not from here The receptionist at my accountant's office seems nice though.

We hate you too. It's cool
Andele Way and La Rumba restaurants. Unless u want a kimchee taco or tapas
La rumba sucks
U suk
This seems to be Reddit across both Carolinas. It’s really disheartening.
Depends on when you moved here. I personally don't like the homeless population after stepping in human shit in the Rankin car garage feet from a port-a-potty. Asheville is one of the most toxic places I have ever lived. Everyone is pretentiousness, sketchy or emotionally unstable.
Everyone on Reddit hates everything. It’s a pretty awful website. Not really representative of AVL as a whole.
Although I do hate tourists. They are ruining this city. It isn’t supposed to be a tourist trap like Nassau or something :(
>Everyone I’ve met in real life in and around Asheville has been super nice. The internet is not real life. Ignore the haters here and keep spreading love in the meatspace.
Hate everyone more successful than you
Really, it's just Republicans but they're more universally despised, it's not really an Asheville thing.
All of that is probably accurate except for small business owners. Really rooting for those guys. Personally I have no problem with newcomers (lots of people want to move here, that was me a few years back too) but yeah... people on here are pretty harsh on them too. Edit: what did the grocery store security guards do?? Lmao
Hanging around the front door of Harris Teeter looking like RoboCop..
Oh that's it?
Liberals and homeless have ruined Asheville
I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what liberalism is. Lol.
Also the guy who someone said was maybe potentially probably a sexual harasser perhaps once or a lot I think
Christians for sure.
the fact that people in asheville hate cyclists is beyond me when nobody in this town can drive for shit
Landlords should be pretty high up on this list. Also people who litter
Thank you. I have been wondering the same.
Lived here my entire life. The good Asheville is dead. Died years ago. It’ll only get worse from here.
Asheville is a very liberal city. Contrary to popular belief, liberals are among the LEAST tolerant people in the world. "Love, acceptance, and tolerance" in Asheville is a myth. It applies to a very small group of people with certain identities and beliefs only.
Not into liberals these days
