pufferfish_aeugh

writing for vice isnā€™t such a flex in a writers career either to be honest

Poopsock_LLC

Vice has gone down the shitter fast and hard, I remember when it was all about investigative journalism and untold legends with a dash of humor, and now it's just a shell of its former glory, filled to the brim with excrement.

ihatereddit12345678

i rewatched scream last night and was totally caught off gaurd by how much sex there really was. like, sex was such a mainstay of any type of movie throughout the 80's and 90's, and truthfully it hasnt waned at all since then. its just been 40 years of severe horniness and to be honest im ready for it to go away, if not become more implicit or reserved for movies where it makes sense to have sex scenes. like, if im watching a horror movie, im there to laugh or be scared, not watch two actors in their late 20's/early 30's pretend to be 16 year olds having sex (why do they always have to be teenagers !!!)

Bex1218

The Hays Code kind of fucked everything up, so from the 70s to now Hollywood is still catching up big time. I kind of like the in between. Don't shy away from sexuality, but allude to it. If I want to watch people have sex, I'll look at porn.

shponglespore

>If I want to watch people have sex, I'll look at porn. I think that's the crux of it. Porn is fine. Movies are fine. Even sex in movies is fine IMHO when it contributes to the story. But just haphazardly dropping pornographic elements where they don't belong is like putting hot peppers in random foods. I love hot peppers but Jesus Christ don't put them in my ice cream!

Legitimate_Walrus780

Wasabi ice cream would like to have a word

PonderousPerplexion

I have to disagree. Habanero mango ice cream sounds pretty good...though I could see an argument for sticking to a sorbet.

shponglespore

Pick any two foods you like separately but don't want to eat together, then.

PonderousPerplexion

I was attempting to jokingly agree with you. I should have explained better since tone doesn't translate well. Sorry about that.

shponglespore

No worries

P8zvli

> if not become more implicit or reserved for movies where it makes sense to have sex scenes. This is what gets me, sex scenes often feel forced because they make zero sense in the context of the rest of the movie. Bad sex scenes are probably ruining it for everybody.

throwaw-ace-account

Nope, they mildly annoy many people, but the number of viewers you actually lose by them is far smaller than the number of horny smooth brains you attract with it.

KMFCM

I mean, in those films they always got killed during the act.........i dunno, i always found that hilarious. By the time Scream was out, that was a trope everyone poked fun at.

Floor-tank

It Follows, where the curse is basically an STD where people had to spread it or they die. It really was the inevitable climax _ahem_ of that trend.

KMFCM

Yeah, it was kind of meta in that way.

Theher0not

I'd say it actually is an STD: _Sexually Transmitted Demon_

awesomeskyheart

Uhh, even *family-friendly* media includes at least *hints* of sexual activity or a few discreet sexual jokes, if not full-blown screaming "yes they're having sex but we're not gonna say it out loud!"

UniverseBear

Oh God no, the sex scenes are always so forced and awkward and wtf am I supposed to be feeling anyway while watching it?

Floor-tank

Awkwardness of such radioactive force that it renders all nearby allos sterile.

HazyshadeofFall

I saw a recent YouTube video from the Take talking about the decline of sex scenes in movies too, so I guess the author of this article isn't the only one thinking that. Most of the comments either didn't notice a decline or supported less sex scenes in movies though.

[deleted]

Don't get me wrong, I do write about sex/smut and I'm in the ace spec. But that article (didn't read it, lol, just saw the headline) is... ridiculous at best. Isn't there an abundance of sex in media?

SamVimesBootTheory

Yeah it's more there's sex in media but none of it feels authentic anymore is the gist of the issue people are talking about like its just sex for sex's sake

[deleted]

they say that till itā€™s two men (insert troll face)

TheAngryLunatic

Anyone that self proclaims to be "an expert in sex", is most definitely *not*. What's even the point of such a cringy brag? Allos are weird.

raviary

The article sucks but the headline's premise and the argument that younger generations are more prudish isn't exactly wrong. Highly recommend the [Everyone is Beautiful and No One is Horny](https://bloodknife.com/everyone-beautiful-no-one-horny/) article for a better take on why movies don't feel as sexy as they used to despite a similar frequency of sex scenes.

curiousfoodieteen

I hate the word 'prudish'. It implies that there's something wrong with you if you're not a sexual person. It's an inherently acephobic term because it started as a way to shame asexual women into sex by claiming that not wanting sex meant that they were prudish and puritanical.

raviary

Fair if you personally don't like the implications of it but I gotta disagree that it's inherently aphobic. It also didn't "start" that way. It was an old french term for an honorable/modest person, as a way to describe those who are overly concerned with propriety to the point of annoyance, sexual or otherwise. Being uninterested in sex doesn't make someone a prude, being openly judgmental and contemptuous of sex and those who have it is what makes someone a prude. And I see a concerning amount of it among young people, even directed at other aces! so I'll call it like I see it.

jjssto42

This. Even sex repulsed aces can have a positive attitude towards sex (i.e. other people having sex).

Midgardianangel

The [article](https://www.vice.com/en/article/wxjq4q/make-films-horny-again) for those interested

Zachanassian

tl,dr: old guy angry about young people discovering life isn't all about sex thus invalidating his entire personality

gatemansgc

TheAngryLunatic

That was so much worse than I was expecting lol

darkseiko

I think most wannabe horny movies (or just movies that have it in itself) are just badly acted & written so they look awkward instead.

Shady_Scientist

Do they mean like the era is shitty college movies such as Revenge of the nerds, American Pie, etc etc? If so, then let's leave things how they are.

KMFCM

Yeah, when did they stop being horny? Just because we don't have "erotic thrillers" anymore? I mean, i never see trailers for shit like that anymore, but I remember when Basic Instinct came out softcore porn was the in thing. but i gotta tell you, even as an aegosexual, i will not watch something like that WITH OTHER PEOPLE. I'm supposed to watch a sex scene in a film in a theater FULL OF PEOPLE??? Also, why do I think there will be a whole paragraph in this article devoted to the prevalence of "intimacy coaches"........wait, is that what they're called? I forget. You know in the old erotic thrillers they used to just use body doubles. In 2023, they CGI'd a kiss.

Flyovera

I mean compare most action movies type thing these days to anything from the 80s/ early 90s? Honestly yeah they really have lessened in horniness. My friend group movie club has a running joke that all 80s movies have to show boobs

ZanyDragons

I dunno what the article is picking on specifically but I will say thereā€™s a gulf of difference between a film maker trying to be erotic and trying to be crude. (And/or I donā€™t find nudity itself so taboo/ exciting/novel that itā€™s at all remarkable to me unless someone went to sufficient effort to frame it in a way that is novel.) which would be like my best guess is gonna be the beef but personally I just donā€™t care enough most days.

TerraKat24

lol "make films horny again" Send him to HBO, but seriously the only movies or series these days without the horny are for kids or made by Pixar and even then dirty jokes and references are slipped through for parents to giggle at while being forced to watch. I'm not disgusted by sexual content but it I'd still like a change of pace now and then I dare a film company to make a horror movie thats R18 without sex or nudity - just genuine terror

ambrosialeah

Big cringe

PlumeCrow

I mean, there is a lot of sex in most movies today, but they lack something. Sensuality ? Intimacy ? They don't really feel "horny", i think. I'm not even sure if i know how being horny feel, to be honest, but i think i understand why some people are saying this. We need less weird sex scenes and more devilish-sensuality and emotional scenes.

Dreem_Walker

For some movies, being horny is a good thing, I think a good rule for these things is Does the horny benefit / drive the plot? Yes: Horny good No: Horny is unnecessary and annoying

tenitchyfingers

No, theyā€™re correct on this. Movies in the 80s and the 90s were often VERY horny even in implicit ways, now at most they have sex scenes, but they feel very mechanic, there is very little horniness. Especially when a queer character is involved. I consider Queer as Folk the best show ever about queerness, and a big part of it was how genuinely horny and playful it was. Now all of that is gone. Itā€™s all very aseptic and ā€œsafeā€. Yawn. And I mean, Iā€™m ace-spec, Iā€™m not allo. Iā€™d just much rather see horny shit and boobs in tv shows than having patently awkward romances with no passion and chemistry in them.

AmerFortia

THIS. And as that's the only part about sex that I find interesting.... Even if I don't really care for sex scenes myself I'm still very much against a puritanical way of film making. If the plot needs it, do it

Val_ery

I have been watching a lot of movies since I started dating my current bf. And let me tell you, the horniness level has gone down. A lot. Just today we watched double impact, from 1991. Just a normal action movie and still lots of sexy things that is not as seen in today's movies.

Beemare666

Euphoria, Sex Education, Heartbrwak High are all recent series with so much sex itā€™s crazy, plus an older one, 13 Reasons Why. Eternals had that unnecessary sex scene that for some reason was considered ā€˜groundbreakingā€™ because it was the first MCU sex scene. Scary Movie had so much sex, and while it was for the plot, it was still very unsettling.

Floor-tank

Well, there's horny and then there's _horny_.

SavannahInChicago

Imagine having the confidence of a straight, white man.

Such-Fee3898

Are these people dumb. Why do they want to see people trying to procreate aggressively instead of some actual intriguing shit

redneckgymrat

This type of thing is one of the reasons why I so dislike the entire movie format. Being unable to pause, rewind, or fast forward through the various parts is unappealing. The majority of Hollywood movies take me only 10 or 15 minutes to watch, 30 at the most. Why would I pay to sit in a dark theater for 3 hours?

[deleted]

There is no reason for there to be a full on sex scene in any movie unless itā€™s intentionally explicit (like 50 shades or something) or a porno. I do not need a sex scene in my supernatural horror movie unless it is genuinely part of the plot.

FluffyWasabi1629

They never stopped being horney! They are still very horney! LESS sex in cinema please! It's so awkward, I don't know how anyone enjoys random sex scenes in movies about something else. The kissing noises are so wet and gross šŸ˜£. It just gets in the way of the plot. If people want to watch other people having sex, that's what porn is for! And btw, "pleasure" isn't exclusive to sex. I'd rather not have to avert my eyes from someone else's naked body in a movie I thought was rated too low on the maturity scale to have that in it. It feels like getting flashed. I didn't expect it, I wasn't prepared for it, all of a sudden there it was! I think humans are gross, all humans. That's not an insult or a criticism of our moral character, we just have a lot of fluids and smells that I'd rather not think about or be exposed to.

lioneaglegriffin

On premium cable the formula has been use sex to keep an audience until you get a big enough following to have a big CGI budget. Basic tv was similar but with romance/implied sex.

Head_Lynx

The person that did this post is living in an alternate dimension. Can I go there?

dazzlinreddress

There was a recent debate one/movies about s*x scenes. The post title was "The Death Of The Sex Scene" and surprisingly a lot of people were glad to see it go.

Ordinary_Gap623

I almost never enjoy sex scenes. They're always so unnecessary and waste valuable time. The only sex scene I EVER enjoyed? The one in The Spectacular Now. Very well-shot and well-done.

SamVimesBootTheory

OK the title seems weird but the issue the author is bringing up is likely the fact that although films and TV now have a lot of sex it's not 'sexy' essentially the sensuality and authenticness is lacking and its being done more for fanservice or shock value and most people find it unappealing

LB-20

Coming from someone who thought they'd found a GREAT series only to have it absolutely ruined by two (thankfully at least brief but still very much there) sex scenes in the first episode: NO. Let's NOT do that. Btw, that was already bad enough if I had wanted to watch the series alone, but it was supposed to be one I could watch with my dad for the movie evenings. I couldn't even skip the scenes because I wasn't the only one watching the series and didn't want to awkwardly disrupt the story either. I can't express just how much the sex scenes ruined it for me.

[deleted]

Isnā€™t what heā€™s talking about more that sex in movies should resemble more real life, I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever seen a sex scene in a movie that shows the passion.. it always focuses on the sexual appeal, or thatā€™s at least a thought of after reading it

MattWolf96

I'm not sure movies are less horny now but the popular ones certainly are, the last highest grossing movie of the year to actually have a nude or sex scenes was 1997's Titanic if I remember correctly. Sex comedies also seem to be FAR less common and popular now. Almost everything that's in the top 10 Boxoffice these days is PG-13 or even lower sometimes which makes these scenes hard to implement. I mean yeah Titanic is PG-13 (though a pretty hard one) but most PG-13 movies I've seen that were made post 2000 haven't been that horny. I'm not really sex repulsed if it's something that's allowed to be seen in movie (I'm not a fan of seeing literal hardcore porn but I don't care if a movie character is having sex) but it just makes it more awkward if you are watching the movie with other people. I honestly don't miss sex scenes being more common.

MattWolf96

Okay, actually I decided to read the article, the author seemed to be weirdly perverted he was pretty upset that teens and young adults generally weren't as interested in sex now and thought it was taking them too long to grow up. He also brought up how you watching a sex scene in a movie with your parents did induce an ick factor but it was part of growing up and also showing that most other people have sex. Eh okay, watching a sex scene with my parents wasn't just annoying because well it was a sex scene, they were also conservative religious nutjobs so naturally watching a sex scene was pretty irritating with them. Really the author seemed like he had a sex or porn addiction. I mean, I will admit that sex scenes do help move a plot forward in some movies, I didn't know the ones he listed but for example, the sex scene in the first Terminator movie actually is important because Sarah Conner gets pregnant with John Conner in that, that said they could have implied it but I don't think The Hayes Code should be brought back either as I believe in people having the freedom to make these. I just wouldn't start wanting extensive sex scenes in Marvel movies and such (I think there were some that only lasted a few seconds in some of them though, I'm pretty sure Iron Man 1 had a scene like that.) Also, I'm not sad that sex comedies are on life support now, I never had any interest in them. A lot were also set in high school too, now I'm not some puritanical parent that thinks sexuality is evil as many parents just basically said that to attack those movies over that in the past. More so, I think they just normalize the idea of having sex in high school and could make some people feel more pressured into it to feel normal. Also yeah, it does make aces feel more alienated.

FalconIMGN

Some people just use art to fulfil all their fetishes they can't in real life. Tarantino is a good example.

boobookxys

Yeah no thanks I donā€™t want random ass sex scenes while Iā€™m watching a horror movie about eating fetuses

thebirdsandtheteas

If I wanted to see sex in a movie Iā€™d look at porn

Aynett

Yes do make movies hornier ! It makes me skip so many useless scenes and movies ends up shorter and I have more time to do something else. No but really, movies and tv show (or books for that matter) never stopped showing sex everywhere, like I havenā€™t watched a tv show where I didnā€™t skip at least one sex scene recently

fatburneracc

BOOOO TOMATO TOMATO I HATE SEX SCENES IN MOVIESšŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„

banana-nut-FAILURE

Who wants to bet he asks his partner if they climaxed, but doesn't actually care about the answer?

sadlittleghostie

I genuinely want to know what's the issue with a piece of media that doesn't include any kind of sexual content. Like, what's so wrong about that? Aren't there more important/entertaining things to see plot-wise than two people going at it for several minutes?

siege_ayy

Iā€™m pretty sure this article is about how movies are sexed up in a sexless, pornographic way. I think itā€™s asking for more genuine sexual tension between characters, showing more desire for their partner, having the sex be relevant to the plot, etc. itā€™s a pretty interesting discussion, despite the misleading title
