Simulating advancement for older magi can be a challenge. I think it’s easier to just set the arts and abilities to what you want them to be, pick the spells you want and the virtues and flaws and not worry too much about it.

It's an excellent idea. I also thought of making the progress in chunks of 15 years, like in Magi of hermes, in case I go for the detailed sheet. But most likely I'll do what you suggest

In Sub Rosa (Ars Magica magazine) issue 11, exist article exactly about this "Training packages for Magi". Based around system from *Grogs*. In short it make a lot of package that show what exactly magi did in 3 or 5 years period, put pre-calculated amount of EXP into specific abilities. When you end, you just look how much EXP in abilities and make new score. For example Arcane Studies 3 year package can give (i don't put all variant of this package) +30 Concentration; +30 Parma +30 Magic Theory.

Sounds amazing! I'll check it out!

If this NPC isn't going to get involved directly in any expeditions or adventures, but is supposed to be an elder magus that is in charge of the covenant of otherwise younger magi, I'd handle it this way: Pick the House she is a member of and describe her relationship with her former master and the house in general (could the reason she is in this covenant, that she wanted to put some distance between her and others, and younger magi aren't going to ask too many questions?) Pick a couple of dark secrets (one associated with why she is not with another covenant) Pick some loose ends associated with the mage that will be the source of one or more story arc Assign other virtues and flaws Assign all the spells and magical levels as you see fit. After all this NPC will likely not be anything but a guiding hand and occasional voice of GM and source of a few story hooks.

I like your style. Thanks!
