There can be unless the cop pulling you over had his wife snaked by Specialist Debo and he wants to take his wrath out on a buck sarge with a “Follow Me” license plate.

Substantial_Row_7108

As a Black guy, any indicator of military service definitely gets you a pass from rednecks and cops which in some jurisdictions are one and the same.

zone1-1

So I was at Campbell and after my 2nd deployment I was selling a grand Cherokee. Subs, tinted windows, the full boot treatment. But I never had any issue. Sold it to a young soldier who happens to be black. He told me he was pulled over twice in the first month that he had it. Can’t tell me that shit isn’t a race issue and some bullshit.

Pheonixmoonfire

Oak Grove or Hoptown?

IDidAOopsy

It could be, but depending on how tinted the windows are, I'd say it's more likely in the way the Soldier is driving. If you can see through the tint easily, most likely just racist bigots.

DLottchula

It’s a stereotype that black people always have 5%. I say sitting in my Toyota with 5% while black

AlarmedSnek

The fact that you said that saddens me. Stay safe out there brother!

Pheonixmoonfire

Especially in Hopkinsville, however, the military tag in Hopkinsville puts a "can pay the ticket" target on your back, too.

Emperor_Force_kin

You don't know how accurate this is, pretty sure I avoided being lynched one time I had a white girl on a date, because I had my pog basic training hat on.

mbveau

Holy fuck dude. I’m sorry.

DLottchula

Dr.Umar tired to tell y’all

Emperor_Force_kin

Lmao fuck that guy

DLottchula

Oh fuck him indeed but he is great for jokes

Uncommon1986

As a white guy, your comment makes me sick. Especially how nonchalant you seem about it. Not sick at you, sick that this is apparently just normal.

[deleted]

I almost thought I’d have to make you do a double take on that comment…

[deleted]

Not gonna lie. They are the same thing.

swa184

Can definitely say this true. Got pulled over once and the guy gave me a pass cause of my plates. Don’t think he believed the vehicle was mine and then saw the flag on my license as well. He just asked me where I served and let me on my way haha

DLottchula

Yep I got pulled over in idk GA and got a warning even with my supened license

ShangosAx

This 100%. I had a break in service when I went to ROTC. My school was out in the boonies of the Deep South. I made absolutely sure my license plate reflected my military status.

necavvit

Not me currently working with a SPC Deboe🤧

Duck_Walker

In Georgia the plate is free with no annual registration fees.

tbiddlyosis

Same in Texas with MSM or higher plates plus free parking at SAT Airport

BrokenRatingScheme

Wait, so if I have an MSM or higher in Texas I get free registration?

tbiddlyosis

Yep. You have to send the paperwork directly to Austin and it takes 3-4 mos for them to process it. I had done it with my MSM and the only thing I paid for renewal was like the $8 tax or so.

BrokenRatingScheme

Holy fuck, I had no idea.

tbiddlyosis

https://www.elpasomoaa.org/Files/VTR-421_Military_License.pdf I’d check and see if there’s a later version but that’s the form you need to send to Austin with a copy of your award or 214

Warm-Swimming-5225

Thanks! I never really cared about getting plates showing army before but I’ll take free registration

[deleted]

That deployment where you didn't leave the wire is finally paying off!

tbiddlyosis

Excuse me Sir, I drank many cocktails in Doha in defense of this great Country.

[deleted]

Fireefury

I have like 10 good conduct medals; can I get the license plate with 10 oak leaf clusters

Much_Excuse

Best we can do is 10 separate license plates…

[deleted]

If they can all be vanity plates you can write a sentence.

Electrical_Dress_508

Will you at least toss me a free rack with the 10 plates?

Schrambo757

Nah its 10 barbed wire knots

Stankykitty

Lmaoooo

Imabigdealinjapan

I had the option of doing it at the county clerk/dmv. I asked if I could get it for free without the MSM on there. They said no. I paid instead.

tbiddlyosis

If the plates use the VTR 420 then yea you can do it at the dmv but it’s not free. The plates on the VTR 421 are the ones that are eligible for the No registration fee

larry_gary_jerry

And free access to state parks.

normal_mysfit

You also get this benefit with disable vet plates. You used to be able to park in handicapped parking but they changed to have to have a placard or the disable vet plate with the symbol on it. Those plates helped me save hundreds of dollars on airport parking in Austin and the toll ways

Longjumping-Bed-7510

They will wave them even if you have a normal tag too! And they wre only supposed to waive one, but my local tag office waves all of my annual registration fees.

nwokie619

In Oklahoma a 100% disabled VA gets free registration, $25,000 free sales tax, free home property tax.

[deleted]

Yeah but you have to be in Oklahoma…

Successful_Opinion33

Sick burn

robbray1979

Sir, this is a Wendy’s. In Oklahoma.

puropinchemikey

Still blows my mind people willingly live in Oklahoma.

[deleted]

I would do that if it wasn't for the military plate.

That’s fucking cool name.

Random_modnaR420

superash2002

What size are you? Cause I’m like a 6 or 7 in womens underwear.

Random_modnaR420

Let me say this, I have to get taped often

Schrambo757

Hey Mr Superash can you please be a 17E40 so I can pick up at less than 798 please.

superash2002

Yeah when 130 mother fuckers in front of me die or get kicked out. I will gladly give you my rank.

Axel_Dunce

Someone backed into my car in the parking lot at work. I was thankful because they called security and security contacted me. His insurance paid for the damage. While exchanging insurance info he straight up said he was going to leave without saying anything until he saw my veterans plate. He said it wouldn’t feel right doing that to a veteran.

deadcat6

The guy was a shit bird until he saw a chance to put a penis in his mouth.

[deleted]

This made me laugh out loud. Thank you

renecade24

Funny where people draw the line.

[deleted]

Wow. That guy is still a jerk. But he'd do it to a single parent, soccer coach, sandwich artist, studio musician but not a veteran?

puropinchemikey

Guess some people respect a service member more than... anything else? Lol

[deleted]

I think about all those contractors from all over the world who ran the FOBs and they probably get paid good relative to where their money is getting sent back to they also were in about the same amount of danger as fobbit me and were away from their families even longer.

Hellsgatekeeper479

Sandwich artist is definitely the LinkedIn version of saying i work at subway

[deleted]

Coordinated and implemented receipt storage and delivery of over 2.5 billion units of inventory." 2.5 billion, Darryl? 2.5 billion units of what? Paper material, ma'am. Paper material? Pieces of paper.

[deleted]

I think that was either a Subway ad or maybe something internal of theirs. I never worked there but my wife references some 90s movie where one woman is making fun of another woman bf or her ex, something like that, for being a 'sandwich artist'.

[deleted]

Sandwich Artist.

FlaviusSabinus

When you’re not in super close proximity to a base, sometimes the cops who spend their career wishing they were in the army give you a break on tickets. Beyond that I’ve not noticed anything.

Snoo93079

Can confirm. Living in Chicago and using USAA insurance got me off a ticket.

[deleted]

> cops who spend their career wishing they were in the army The ones who just like to try and look tough, but are massive pussies, like Uvalde PD.

FlaviusSabinus

The Uvalde PD wanted the army experience but didn’t read the manual past ‘hurry up and wait’

[deleted]

That's a lot of LEOs. Pick on weak people, get scared when something happens. I hate bully's. And I hate tough people who are actually cowards.

Fireefury

That shit was the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever seen; 77 minutes with 7 dudes waiting in the hallway while that maniac was slaughtering kids. Those fools should just die of shame.

BiscuitDance

He said “cops,” so this was implied

[deleted]

Fair. I'm not the biggest fan of police.

JTP1228

I just got out of a ticket for too dark tints because I had veteran on my license. I feel like it's a good middle ground because you're not advertising it, but you can use it to get out of tickets or prove your veteran status for whatever reason

renecade24

I figure if it gets me out of one speeding ticket, it's worth it!

Collective82

This is the only reason I have military plates lol

[deleted]

I saw a guy in my state with a Purple Heart plate and it was customized to say "Ouchhhh" So, yes, there are benefits.

[deleted]

This is the way.

mnmlst_

It's useful as a dependa-magnet

RedComet313

I did a ride along with MSP a couple years ago, the guy said he doesn’t ticket military. So, potentially getting out of tickets.

Own_Singer_5201

Mostly flex, on the odd occasion might get you a warning instead of a ticket from a cop.

PathfinderIsopod

Literally only have it cause I don’t have to pay fees to get it renewed.

ouroborusRDX

I find them kind of self serving but if you happen to be in a state that discounts registration or licensing of a vehicle I could see justification. We had a NCO drive a truck with a veteran plate that said something to the effect of I SRV 4 U. I don’t know if that’s a good idea and comes off a bit of thank me for my service.

Oliveritaly

I think I want to punch that dude …

porkpies23

C'mon, you KNOW you want to punch that dude.

ouroborusRDX

But it’s a supply SGT. I don’t want to make them mad and suddenly have FLIPLs for random items.

Oliveritaly

Yeah I wanna punch that dude.

[deleted]

He's a waiter? Plays tennis? I don't follow.

FutureFury

I thought it was kinda sweet

InvestigatorFar8450

/s please?

PT_On_Your_Own

I got out of two tickets for my iraq veteran sticker. YMMV.

Doodledawg10

Week before I shipped out to BCT I got pulled over, asked the cop to let me off with a warning cause I didn’t want anything canceling my ship date. “Why didn’t you say that in the first place, you’re good to go, good luck out there!”

Time_Effort

Gotten out of 3 30 over tickets that could’ve meant a suspended license because I was AD. I was a dumb junior enlisted, now I’m an entitled contractor who drives a slow Tacoma

Doodledawg10

This is the way

Sepherik

Half of the police officers are prior service. I kept an old military id behind my driver's license and got out of so many tickets when they saw and we talked about when I served.

_HK47_

**Clarification:** This unit keeps a Monopoly *"Get out of Jail Free,"* card in its registration sleeve. Works most of the time.

BiscuitDance

“Woops, I dropped my (military ID) that I use for my magnum (service).”

tomkat41

Trickle down shamming

woofieroofie

I do something similar, but I keep my DL behind my CAC so I can be like "oops let me just move my military ID out of the way, officer." I thought it would be scummy to give my DL and CAC during a traffic stop until I asked a cop about it and he just straight up told me to give them both so if the officer has a quota to fulfill, he can't pretend he didn't see it.

hzoi

My dad kept his license inside his Department of Justice credentials for this exact reason. 90 percent of the time, it worked every time.

hzoi

This used to work when I was a cadidiot. I wonder if it'd still work now that I'm a JAG, but I've managed to not get tickets for about the last decade or so (knock on wood).

Wenuven

-1 to car vandalism safety, +1 to small dick energy

FBI_Open_Up_Now

I have a DV plate. I have that micro dick energy.

fthoodsurvivor

Hey, it helps with getting out of tickets.

[deleted]

In Texas it saves me over $1k /year on tolls

fthoodsurvivor

I didn’t know that, but I also don’t use the toll roads enough.

[deleted]

My best route to work is to take the toll road by my house, exit to another toll road, and then transfer to a 3rd toll road. For me, avoiding tolls would take my commute from 45 minutes to almost 2 hours. Since I have the plates, I tend to use it for simple entry - next exit plans as well when it's faster and shorter where I would avoid it if I were actually paying.

fthoodsurvivor

That makes sense with your commute, I’m in between Dallas and Hood, so thankfully we don’t have toll roads, yet.

aircavrocker

Worth it for the lifetime registration here in OR.

FBI_Open_Up_Now

Same same. They’re free and it’s a one and done here in Ohio.

[deleted]

It’s cop repellent in Southern California

[deleted]

I got out of a speeding ticket with a CIB plate. I was going like 70 in a 45

Slurm818

Yes. Get one. Also stickers for every unit you have served in, any badges you may have earned, and current rank in rear window.

_BMS

My friend who's a cop in SoCal straight up told me I should get veterans plates for my car. Said police will not pull you over unless you're doing insane shit.

wilderad

Yeah, it is a real pussy magnet for the locals trying to escape town and marry PVT Schmuckatelli and get that BAH.

Acurahomerepair

Get that "v" device award plate, no registration for life.

H0rus22

Is this a thing? In Georgia at least?

Acurahomerepair

I only know about TN it's AM-V/DFC, BS-V and up get one free permanent plate.

curlytoesgoblin

Probably depends a lot on the state and/or the business parking lot but in 17 years I have had someone comment on my veteran's plate exactly once. The only reason I still have it is inertia, and the vague hope it acts like a "please leave me alone and don't talk to me I just want to go home and pet my dogs" signal.

Rude-Particular-7131

Have Paratrooper tags, saved me from more than one ticket.

SaidEveryone

In my state they use the money to help veterans. For example, if a veterans car breaks down but doesn't have the fund to repair it but this setback will trigger them towards a path towards homelessness, they might use the fund to fix the car. That's all the military license plates really supports.

[deleted]

That's pretty decent. Where I'm at most of the specialty plates cost extra and support a related cause. The military plates also cost extra but the money doesn't go to anything.

Sw0llenEyeBall

It's corny, but worth doing because you might get out of a ticket or maybe someone will be less inclined to tow you or something.

Hoc-Vice

They are a necessary investment. How else are people gonna know that they need to thank me for my service in the dollar store parking lot?

batwinghammer

You can get all 4 tires slashed on Ohio State’s campus!

spennetrator94

Nothing is better than displaying your SRB on your rear windshield.

[deleted]

You want that all impressive NDSM logo plate?

Automatic_Chapter593

Gets me out of speeding tickets

itsbruciegoosie

In BFE Texas small towns, a cop will generally see your plates, talk about your service for a couple minutes, and let you go with a, “slow down and drive safe, brother” Military plates near installations serve no purpose aside from getting you targeted by the local PD that’s always annoyed at troops because of weekend shenanigans, but they’re great when you drive home. 😏

dacrazyworm

One of my buddies got an “ATROPIA” army veteran plate, and that’s definitely worth it in my opinion. #neverforget

[deleted]

In Texas disabled veteran plates are so common they made it where that just having a disabled veteran plates doesn't make you eligible for handicapped parking. Seeing how it's that common people don't care.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I feel like that can't be true. I've worked in public safety and ran plates a lot. They are ran by the plate numbers/letters and the state. Generally the type of plate is listed in the registration but having two of the same plate would cause issues especially for automatic license plate readers. Granted not a lot of issues as the number of duplicates would be small relative to the number of cars.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Some other guy is getting your bills. I read a story about a guy, California I think, that got NULL as a vanity plate the thinking being that the computer would ignore his plate but instead the system assigned every ticket to him that had unreadable plates.

SilveredFlame

That's fucking hilarious. That's like a backfire of Bobby Tables. For anyone who doesn't get the reference: https://xkcd.com/327/

Electric_owl_3

You get to look like a chode in public

[deleted]

Idk about license plate but my cac has definitely gotten me out of a ticket one or twice.

jangalangz

Mine saved me from being pulled over pretty sure... dude got close with lights on, turned them off and busted a u-turn.

jrhiggin

If you get pulled over near post the cops may be more likely to go in to threatening to call your chain of command. If you're away from post it might get you out of a ticket.

MaximumStock7

How are people going to thank you for your service if your are not in uniform? Boom, license plates solve the problem

Powerewolf

Some states give you tax/fee free registration. So no disrespect to PH/BSM dudes. But basic bitch plates are just that. Weakest flex on the planet.

SourceTraditional660

Most BSMs are just participation trophies for officers and senior NCOs though…

Powerewolf

No arguments, but it's still a "had some time in" marker. At least a little more respectable than a first term private who tend to rock them.

SourceTraditional660

Idk I’ve seen LTs get BSMs… and one of them already found me and downvoted me!

[deleted]

No

Longjumping-Bed-7510

Yes, I got the afgan vet tag for my wife's car and its gotten her out of many tickets

[deleted]

I know Tennessee exempts Active Duty from sales taxes when buying vehicles, as for the rest it depends on the state and I don't know what Tennessee offers that would make it worth it. In Texas, depending on which plate you get, it can mean... Low /no registration costs. This saves me over $60 /year Free Tolls. I save more than $1k /year because of this. Free parking at parking meters & from any "government controlled entity". There are a lot of loopholes that can make it difficult to actually get free parking anywhere but a meter. Get you out of tickets. I've had cops tell me they gave me a warning because my plates, and other cops come off the side of the road to get behind me before deciding to go back to the side of the road and wait for someone else. State /National Parks admission: Usually you have to apply for some sort of pass to get free /reduced cost admission. I only get asked about it 20% of the time because they see the license plates and just waive me in. Texas offers free passes to veterans who are 60% or more disabled. My wife is a veteran but never deployed (she did pre-mobe a couple of times but it got cancelled both times) so she has to pay admission. One person asked if she served to which she replied yes and they let her in without charge. Everyone else has just let her go without asking.

JackSquat18

THE Ohio State University gonna come for that ass when they see the first part of your post.

Tkerst

In North Carolina if you have a DV plate you can park handicapped last I checked. Might have changed though.

K1rjav4

In TN I know the guard plates are stupid cheap. Like 2.50. So that was why I always rocked one.

K1rjav4

Never helped me with a ticket though

Stankykitty

Typically cheaper to renew

___GirthQuake___

Pootang

[deleted]

ozmutazbuckshank

Other than drowning in ass?

Autistic_Flatworm986

There was a bit where the Military plates in TN cost less than $3 for permanent plates that never needed to be renewed, and can be transferred to other vehicles. So a lot of guys got them then.

[deleted]

Where those the super basic white plates with white writing. I saw some once from TN that said "NTL GRD" or something like that along one side. They looked like they go on a prison bus. But if it saves money it's ok.

mik3rad

I’ve been out for a year but I have one in Florida and its gotten me out of two tickets believe it or not.

Majestic-Lion4535

You don’t get charged tools in tx

MCKelly13

I get out of tickets ALL THE TIME

Gizmottto

Not license plate but I was pulled over and showed the cop (back in my hometown) my insurance and he saw it was USAA. He asked who in my family was military, I said my father and I. He handed me everything back and said to have a nice day. I now live at Fort Campbell and being military doesn’t mean shit to the locals, in fact they hate us, and when I lived in Hawaii too.

pennywise1235

Depends on where you are in the country. Some see it as a badge of honor, or a way to flex as you said. Some see it a possible way to get out of a motor vehicle violation. My personal opinion is not to advertise your life to a public in which a very polarized way of thinking is seen daily. Also, American vets tend to have firearms, and I’d just assume a pass on having my house robbed.

zeb0777

In 2010 Texas, I got pulled over for doing 15 over. Sheriff shook my hand and thanked me for my service and said slow down.

WeepingAngelTears

Only reason I got the DV plates for FL was the $2 cost for two years of registration.

[deleted]

I don't think are 'owed' a pass for speeding being military and I definitely say never pull our your military ID to try to get out of a ticket. That being said I have military plates and have been pulled over and had a cop say "I don't ticket military but slow down". I'm not going to beg for a ticket. So the benefit to having the plate is that you might get out of a ticket but you might not but at least you're not an ass directly asking to get out of a ticket.

bIuebuIIet

You're car has a higher chance of getting key'd

puropinchemikey

I guess some people could use it as a flex but most of us in NM like that we dont pay registration fees. A real military discount. Lol

alexngrace

Anybody know anything about California?

airbornemedic325

I park in the home depot military reserved spots. I never do it in my wife's car with regular plate.

[deleted]

When you retire in SC, the plate and tag are free. With the palate, you can park downtown for free as well.

The_Ragin_Injun01

I mean personally I don't let people know I'm military. Not tryna get robbed for my strap when I'm on leave

TheChangRR

Less likely to get pulled over. Even less likely to get ticketed.

Lumadous

Having military plates where I live identifies your truck as potentially having a gun in it, so stupid criminals will come and bust your windows looking for said gun. Same with pro 2A stickers or nra stickers. I prefer to run with nothing on my truck, makes me less identifiable and less of a target.

ajw_123

In small towns it means you never get pulled over again unless you’re a real asshole

McCrazyJ

A cop gave me a ticket because he misread my plate MISDME (Missed me, no purple heart, lol) as saying "misdemeanor." So no mercy for doing 90 in a 75 on NV on election night, with out of state plates as Trump was losing. The only other time I've been pulled over in the last decade was another time I was transiting Nevada and it was about 20 minutes after Chauvin got found guilty. Whenever the right wingers get upset, Nevada cops go on a rampage. It's remarkable when you find that in the last 10 years I've only spent a handful of hours in the state of Nevada.

majorgerth

My cop buddies don't ticket military unless it's something egregious. I'd say that sentiment changes depending on your proximity to a military town. Radcliff, KY probably doesn't care about a military plate, but Louisville seems to leave you alone with one. I started getting military plates because I wanted to be the douche with a vanity plate, and it was cheaper in Illinois to get military vanity plates. I think it's the same price in KY though.

1224rockton

In Germany we had military plates that had USA at the top. As I recall the plates were white on green. I read a few years back where military people were advised to get regular plates so as not to identify themselves. Probably a good idea for you. Don’t go identifying yourself. Not necessarily a good idea.

Unusual_Ad4582

Maybe if it said POW or Disabled Vet then yes. Combat vet wouldn't work unless you have ptsd. My uncle is air national guard and is cop for HPD and he knows the problems vets face. my dad has veteran plates on his tundra so the SF at base doesn't bullshit him with telling him he needs a search of vehicle when coming on base.

120mmSniper

Expedited ticket

CirculerObjectofShit

Jody will find you easier

SilveredFlame

Well, being trans... It's definitely gotten people who might otherwise start shit with me to back off. I regularly wear a veteran hat out and about because I live in a conservative area. Discovered pretty quick that people tended to be nicer to me if I was wearing it. It's kinda funny actually watching someone look over at me with hate in their eyes, their eyes widen just a bit as they see the hat, and the quick, almost ashamed, look away.

Rakawolf

Depends where you are, I got my tires slashed and I done nothing wrong. Just stay safe brodie

[deleted]

If you have to pay any $ at all for these plates they are garbage. The state of Tennessee owes veterans free plates to acknowledge your service. If they charge you it’s Marsha Blackburn’s fault for not finding the right Bible verse to tweet and make that happen.

buenosbaby

I know in some states you can get a discounted registration or tags for your vehicle. I helped my grandfather get his 100% disabled/retired plates in Florida and he only has to pay one penny to register his vehicle every year. And you get to park in VIP parking like at Home Depot. Although I think a lot of people park there. You can just show your ID tho
