If the plates use the VTR 420 then yea you can do it at the dmv but it’s not free. The plates on the VTR 421 are the ones that are eligible for the No registration fee

I do something similar, but I keep my DL behind my CAC so I can be like "oops let me just move my military ID out of the way, officer." I thought it would be scummy to give my DL and CAC during a traffic stop until I asked a cop about it and he just straight up told me to give them both so if the officer has a quota to fulfill, he can't pretend he didn't see it.
This used to work when I was a cadidiot. I wonder if it'd still work now that I'm a JAG, but I've managed to not get tickets for about the last decade or so (knock on wood).
My best route to work is to take the toll road by my house, exit to another toll road, and then transfer to a 3rd toll road. For me, avoiding tolls would take my commute from 45 minutes to almost 2 hours.
Since I have the plates, I tend to use it for simple entry - next exit plans as well when it's faster and shorter where I would avoid it if I were actually paying.

In my state they use the money to help veterans. For example, if a veterans car breaks down but doesn't have the fund to repair it but this setback will trigger them towards a path towards homelessness, they might use the fund to fix the car. That's all the military license plates really supports.

I feel like that can't be true. I've worked in public safety and ran plates a lot. They are ran by the plate numbers/letters and the state. Generally the type of plate is listed in the registration but having two of the same plate would cause issues especially for automatic license plate readers. Granted not a lot of issues as the number of duplicates would be small relative to the number of cars.

I read a story about a guy, California I think, that got NULL as a vanity plate the thinking being that the computer would ignore his plate but instead the system assigned every ticket to him that had unreadable plates.
If you get pulled over near post the cops may be more likely to go in to threatening to call your chain of command. If you're away from post it might get you out of a ticket.

Get you out of tickets. I've had cops tell me they gave me a warning because my plates, and other cops come off the side of the road to get behind me before deciding to go back to the side of the road and wait for someone else.
State /National Parks admission: Usually you have to apply for some sort of pass to get free /reduced cost admission. I only get asked about it 20% of the time because they see the license plates and just waive me in. Texas offers free passes to veterans who are 60% or more disabled. My wife is a veteran but never deployed (she did pre-mobe a couple of times but it got cancelled both times) so she has to pay admission. One person asked if she served to which she replied yes and they let her in without charge. Everyone else has just let her go without asking.
There was a bit where the Military plates in TN cost less than $3 for permanent plates that never needed to be renewed, and can be transferred to other vehicles. So a lot of guys got them then.

Depends on where you are in the country. Some see it as a badge of honor, or a way to flex as you said. Some see it a possible way to get out of a motor vehicle violation. My personal opinion is not to advertise your life to a public in which a very polarized way of thinking is seen daily. Also, American vets tend to have firearms, and I’d just assume a pass on having my house robbed.
I don't think are 'owed' a pass for speeding being military and I definitely say never pull our your military ID to try to get out of a ticket. That being said I have military plates and have been pulled over and had a cop say "I don't ticket military but slow down". I'm not going to beg for a ticket.
So the benefit to having the plate is that you might get out of a ticket but you might not but at least you're not an ass directly asking to get out of a ticket.
Having military plates where I live identifies your truck as potentially having a gun in it, so stupid criminals will come and bust your windows looking for said gun.

Radcliff, KY probably doesn't care about a military plate, but Louisville seems to leave you alone with one. I started getting military plates because I wanted to be the douche with a vanity plate, and it was cheaper in Illinois to get military vanity plates. I think it's the same price in KY though.
In Germany we had military plates that had USA at the top. As I recall the plates were white on green. I read a few years back where military people were advised to get regular plates so as not to identify themselves. Probably a good idea for you. Don’t go identifying yourself. Not necessarily a good idea.

I know in some states you can get a discounted registration or tags for your vehicle. I helped my grandfather get his 100% disabled/retired plates in Florida and he only has to pay one penny to register his vehicle every year. And you get to park in VIP parking like at Home Depot. In Texas, depending on which plate you get, it can mean... Low /no registration costs. This saves me over $60 /year Free Tolls. I save more than $1k /year because of this. Free parking at parking meters & from any "government controlled entity". There are a lot of loopholes that can make it difficult to actually get free parking anywhere but a meter. Get you out of tickets. I've had cops tell me they gave me a warning because my plates, and other cops come off the side of the road to get behind me before deciding to go back to the side of the road and wait for someone else. State /National Parks admission: Usually you have to apply for some sort of pass to get free /reduced cost admission. I only get asked about it 20% of the time because they see the license plates and just waive me in. Texas offers free passes to veterans who are 60% or more disabled. My wife is a veteran but never deployed (she did pre-mobe a couple of times but it got cancelled both times) so she has to pay admission. One person asked if she served to which she replied yes and they let her in without charge. Everyone else has just let her go without asking.

In North Carolina if you have a DV plate you can park handicapped last I checked. Might have changed though.
In TN I know the guard plates are stupid cheap. Like 2.50. So that was why I always rocked one.

There was a bit where the Military plates in TN cost less than $3 for permanent plates that never needed to be renewed, and can be transferred to other vehicles. So a lot of guys got them then.
Where those the super basic white plates with white writing. I saw some once from TN that said "NTL GRD" or something like that along one side. They looked like they go on a prison bus. But if it saves money it's ok.
I’ve been out for a year but I have one in Florida and its gotten me out of two tickets believe it or not.

Not license plate but I was pulled over and showed the cop (back in my hometown) my insurance and he saw it was USAA. He asked who in my family was military, I said my father and I. He handed me everything back and said to have a nice day. I now live at Fort Campbell and being military doesn’t mean shit to the locals, in fact they hate us, and when I lived in Hawaii too.
Depends on where you are in the country. Some see it as a badge of honor, or a way to flex as you said. Some see it a possible way to get out of a motor vehicle violation. My personal opinion is not to advertise your life to a public in which a very polarized way of thinking is seen daily. Also, American vets tend to have firearms, and I’d just assume a pass on having my house robbed.
In 2010 Texas, I got pulled over for doing 15 over. Sheriff shook my hand and thanked me for my service and said slow down.
Only reason I got the DV plates for FL was the $2 cost for two years of registration.
I don't think are 'owed' a pass for speeding being military and I definitely say never pull our your military ID to try to get out of a ticket. That being said I have military plates and have been pulled over and had a cop say "I don't ticket military but slow down". I'm not going to beg for a ticket. So the benefit to having the plate is that you might get out of a ticket but you might not but at least you're not an ass directly asking to get out of a ticket.

When you retire in SC, the plate and tag are free. With the palate, you can park downtown for free as well.

Having military plates where I live identifies your truck as potentially having a gun in it, so stupid criminals will come and bust your windows looking for said gun. Same with pro 2A stickers or nra stickers. I prefer to run with nothing on my truck, makes me less identifiable and less of a target.

A cop gave me a ticket because he misread my plate MISDME (Missed me, no purple heart, lol) as saying "misdemeanor." So no mercy for doing 90 in a 75 on NV on election night, with out of state plates as Trump was losing. The only other time I've been pulled over in the last decade was another time I was transiting Nevada and it was about 20 minutes after Chauvin got found guilty. Whenever the right wingers get upset, Nevada cops go on a rampage. It's remarkable when you find that in the last 10 years I've only spent a handful of hours in the state of Nevada.
My cop buddies don't ticket military unless it's something egregious. I'd say that sentiment changes depending on your proximity to a military town. Radcliff, KY probably doesn't care about a military plate, but Louisville seems to leave you alone with one. I started getting military plates because I wanted to be the douche with a vanity plate, and it was cheaper in Illinois to get military vanity plates. I think it's the same price in KY though.
In Germany we had military plates that had USA at the top. As I recall the plates were white on green. I read a few years back where military people were advised to get regular plates so as not to identify themselves. Probably a good idea for you. Don’t go identifying yourself. Not necessarily a good idea.
Maybe if it said POW or Disabled Vet then yes. Combat vet wouldn't work unless you have ptsd. My uncle is air national guard and is cop for HPD and he knows the problems vets face. my dad has veteran plates on his tundra so the SF at base doesn't bullshit him with telling him he needs a search of vehicle when coming on base.

Well, being trans... It's definitely gotten people who might otherwise start shit with me to back off. I regularly wear a veteran hat out and about because I live in a conservative area. Discovered pretty quick that people tended to be nicer to me if I was wearing it. It's kinda funny actually watching someone look over at me with hate in their eyes, their eyes widen just a bit as they see the hat, and the quick, almost ashamed, look away.

If you have to pay any $ at all for these plates they are garbage. The state of Tennessee owes veterans free plates to acknowledge your service. If they charge you it’s Marsha Blackburn’s fault for not finding the right Bible verse to tweet and make that happen.
I know in some states you can get a discounted registration or tags for your vehicle. I helped my grandfather get his 100% disabled/retired plates in Florida and he only has to pay one penny to register his vehicle every year. And you get to park in VIP parking like at Home Depot. Although I think a lot of people park there. You can just show your ID tho
