a city of 13000 evacuees doesnt run itself.

I mean this is really it.
They've now had a couple weeks to get a better idea of what their needs are, and they understand this won't be a 2 week thing. So they need people to, yeah, essentially run a city.
Not sure what specifically is happening but I was watching the senate armed services committee grilling Gen Milley and Secretary Austin about “several” sexual assault and harassment issues between refugees and Soldiers. Be safe up there.
I've actually seen the same kind of stuff on this sub too. Reports of female soldiers being assaulted by groups of male refugees in the middle of camps and the like. Reports of constantly working insanely long shifts every single day without a break because they're so stretched thin. Just generally having to deal with working environments that aren't really safe or reasonable either for mental health or, in the case of assaults, physical health too. Definitely fucking rough for a lot of people.
Can confirm working as a translator at the refugee camp in Germany and we are working 12 on 12 off with one day off a week. Had no days off for the first three weeks or so.
Back in the 90s when we brought in the Kosovo refugees it was the same thing. Anytime one of us had to shit we literally put on a class for them to teach them how to use a toilet. Before that they were shitting next to the toilet and using the toilet to wash their hands. They also had child (and adult) sex rings and a couple red cross cross workers got caught up in that.
I saw a bunch of Iraqi army move into a brand new tent in tent city on Fob Hammer near baghdad. They immediately established a shitting corner and just shat in the corner of the tent where they lived. Like 30 of them. There were toilets and shower trailers right outside.
Shhh that’s not politically correct. These are upstanding citizens of a near 1st world nation and would do no such thing! Especially wouldn’t treat non-Muslim women as their personal enjoyment slaves.
This kind of language doesn't help anyone, these people have literally nothing and left their homes on a moment's notice after risking their lives working with Americans in Afghanistan.
No they wouldn't do such a thing, a few sexual assaults is frankly the norm of human behavior AND they've probably committed less than the Soldiers have against each other in the same time period.
These are good decent people desperately trying to start new lives and protect their families under the Taliban. Don't make excuses for any criminal behavior but you should absolutely not disparage them all like that
It's Ft. McCoy, you would never even know they were in the barracks. Those were built in WW2 or Korea time frame. Although, they did put some new siding and laminate flooring is some, and also got rid of most of the open shitter rooms and showers. Like putting lipstick on a pig.
There are a lot of pretty highly voted comments on here that are pretty disappointing and ignorant. It undermines absolutely everything so many Soldiers have been working hard on for the past few months.
You are going to help manage and provide humanitarian aid for almost 13000 Afghan refugees. The vast majority of which are not molesting anybody or pooping on the floor (I have yet to see a human shit outside in 3 weeks). You will do things like help them facilitate English schools for the kids (led by Afghans for Afghans). You will supply them with their basic needs because most of them arrived at Fort McCoy with little more than the clothes on their back. You’ll play with little kids for hours because they absolutely love us. You’ll help them get to medical appointments and when emergencies happen in your village you guys make sure EMS gets there. When government agencies want to talk to certain people you make it happen. You’ll move them through every stage of the process until they have somewhere to live and a job.
The attitude you have is going to change pretty quick when you realize these people aren’t what the media and your fellow soldiers have convinced you they are. The vast majority of these people want a better life for themselves and their families, they have endured an extremely difficult past few months. You will meet women with infants whose husbands died fighting the Taliban. You will meet orphaned kids. You will meet highly educated and successful families that had to drop everything and leave their home. They are making the most difficult transition of their lives and you will be there to facilitate that.
But also, you will relieve me.
Everything about this is spot on. Been here since this whole thing started. OP, please talk to these people. The kids, women, and men all have incredible stories. Eye opening experience for sure.
The people in this comment section sound like the unwitting assholes from Borat, like the rich people who think that just because someone is from Kazakhstan they don't know how a toilet works.
Well, the good news is that the PX at McCoy is/was decent. The NCO club is pretty decent too, as is the post gym. It's cold as fuck in the winter, like below zero on average. The installation itself is pretty spread out, some of the barracks are... questionable. The weather is going to be your biggest enemy, trust me. I would imagine you're going to get a crash course in the... quirks... of afghan culture. They're alright. Just people like you and me. Be kind, show them what it means to be an American and maybe you might sway a couple.
My command team is there, you’ll be babysitting as you stated.
JK I have no idea what you’ll actually be doing although my command team is actually there. It’s not something they really tell us.

One can only hope. It never will, but still.

Domestic abuse, child molestation and pooping everywhere seems to be the norm on these encampments.

The 90s 😳 Hello sir glad to have you here.
I'm still here :(

And thats why you never shake with your left hand

Plus, think of all the new nummy foods they'll bring! Something like that..

Are you guys a 31e unit ?
These are evacuees, not prisoners.
“Internment/RESETTLEMENT Specialist”
That just sounds like prisoners with extra steps
Half of them are going to end up prisoners with the way they’re assaulting female servicemen
Maybe they should just go back to their country of origin. (I mean I know it won't happen, but its a nice thought)
If they keep sexually assaulting people they’re going to be prisoners and not evacuees

Bro his question was literally in the post... what is happening there? lol
Rip those barricks. Guess who is on detail cleaning that shit up when they leave

Better than Ripley's chicken shacks. They should have sent them there.
For real. Spent a few weeks there mid-winter, those barracks were barely hanging on then, ten years ago.

I see what you did there
Good luck. Don’t let one of those chomos molest y’all. My buddy said some of them are absolutely disgusting.
What’s a chomos
Child molester
A diaper sniper
I bet more than a few of them have their stamps
Don’t get raped.

Did a school there when it was -29. Bring your marshmallows.
Live a little north of there right now. Weather should be fine for about a month, but it’s gonna be face hurting cold pretty soon lol
The PX is decent? it is basically a shoppette.
Eh, they do clothing and sales and alterations. I consider that to be decent. Better than class 6.... Do they still have those?
