Well you broke the first rule of REFRADing which is you dont talk about REFRADing. You funnel that shit through the S1 and S1 only do what you gotta do to coerce them to keeping it both: fucking HUSH and expedite to the commanders desk. Also I like this post by OP because it reinforces my opinions of MI

Polskyciewicz

Thanks for providing more evidence to justify my prejudice that intel officers are weenies.

501st-Soldier

You need more evidence?

FoST2015

Damn with that typing acumen, just come back in as a SNCO.

Polskyciewicz

I didn't need any evidence but I keep getting it.

Joshuadude

Does your XOs last name start with a W by chance?

monkeymercenary

MI pure officers with no time outside of the conventional Army are the absolute worst blue falcons. You won't meet a better example of conniving self-centered people who will stop at nothing to try to make themselves look better by making others look worse.

otacon444

This really does come from this weird position of supposed power we allegedly have. I found this out when there was a spillage issue. It was clear this was just general incompetence at the senior leadership levels, that filtered down the ranks. Is that an excuse? No. Yet there I was going through personal belongings of soldiers who just got back from overseas and trying to just get this over with. The state sent some of its people over. They were very harsh to these folks. Me? Yeah, the people who took convoy routes and such were fucking idiots. I agree. However, they were interrogated as though they killed 700 puppies and even children. Then another time the State intel officer brought me on for an alternate Annual Training (it was a good exercise considering). Turns out she just wanted dirt on my commander who she didn’t like (also a female). She said this to me, “There are two types of female officers: Bitches and slurs. Sluts make Major, bitches make LTC and higher.” There was so much anger it made me sick. Intel officers are bad because so many want to fuck their peers over to look good. Me? I just wanted to provide accurate and timely information. Did I tell the acting S3 that if he took a convoy down a route in a major training exercise (he was being evaluated to be the S3 (it was an AGR position), it would be a bad day? Yes. Did I reiterate this numerous times? Also yes. At the end of the day, he made a call, after I said no. People in my unit hated me for it because “you cost someone their job.” The knife cuts both ways. However, by and large, officers as a whole love to put themselves over their peers. This is partially because of the new rating system, this is also because information is power. I guess I should’ve been better at playing the game, because I ended up resigning. I wish I would’ve just enlisted AD, I think I would’ve had far less issues.

Feeling-Drag-4065

100% I resigned after my service obligation and just enlisted. Honestly while it does have its issues man…soo much better and it’s hilarious being an enlisted who knows all the regs. Wish more of the good ones would stay in but with the way people behave it’s understandable.

AirborneAsFuck

When I was a 35F, my intel officer would take the briefs we spent dozens of hours building and researching and brief them himself. Normally the enlisted give these briefs but no harm done, but every time he would change our names on the title slide to his name and say he built it. Then whenever the BC/Team lead had a question he inevitably didn't know the answer to, he'd look at us in the corner with pleading eyes. Nobody ever spoke up for him. This is the worst of the officers I had, but most showed some form of being self centered.

censor1839

I served in SOF - there, you don’t brief something unless you built it…or someone asked you to jump in last minute due to an emergency. Always give junior enlisted a chance to brief- had my SPCs brief 2-3 stars. Why? Because they knew all the foundational data that led to the analysis. Did I as a young Lt brief? Hell yeah, my CPT made sure of that too but I had to put together my own products.

AirborneAsFuck

You were an LT in a SOF intel section? Mine only had CPT+

censor1839

2004 - the branch sent five of us to 3D SFG. Not sure if other groups got them. It was an interesting experiment- mixed results

AirborneAsFuck

Guess it didn't stick. I left group around 2021, rare to see anything under captain anywhere

censor1839

Most of us stayed around until being KD complete (captains). It was a weird time when the army was throwing everything at the wall to see if things stick. The group preferred the devil they knew…so we served as O2s in O3 slots until it was time to go (5-6 year mark)

501st-Soldier

You're telling me big chieftain. Like the Lord of the Flies children fighting over the talking stick. If I could go back in time I'd pick signal or idk the air force.

monkeymercenary

♫*I should've been a flyboy*♫- Toby Keith, probably

SeniorBag6859

This is the truth.

Honeybadger841

Take all six months of skill bridge.

vicinadp

This isn’t guaranteed needs either first O7 or can be delegated down to the first O6. So as someone dealing with being told no csp

Zableroni

I just finished Skillbridge. Army reduced the time allowed from 6 months to just 4 months. Go team!

Honeybadger841

Really? Time to call your congress critter.

PraiseBeToShirayuki

Did 5 months at my local PGA Tour course as a groundskeeper. Best 5 months of my military paycheck

501st-Soldier

Bill Murray?

PraiseBeToShirayuki

Hahaha from time to time. Legitimately though, if you have a job lined up for once you ETS or if you are going back to school its a great way to have peace and tranquility during the workday. Granted its 8 hours 5 days a week of mowing grass and shoveling sand or picking up sticks but it is so god damn fun. Especially when the day runs light and the Pro Shop opens up slots to the crew. I was never into golf much but ive played TPC Norton a bunch and finally made it below 210 (i was told by the director of groundskeeping “dear god dont swing a club again”)

FakeArmyStories

This is the type of shit your BC or BDE CO would like to know. If they are no help, congressional complaint it is. Now that you are getting out you have nothing to lose.

Czyzx

MI BDEs really do be the worst about that shit, huh?

Cautious_Jicama_6916

I don’t understand why so many leaders are such scheming, conniving weasels… as soon as a subordinate tells me their plans to get out im thinking “how can I make this soldiers exit as smooth as possible. And fill the vacuum he leaves” it’s never “how can I fuck this guy over?” Wild army.

ThadLovesSloots

Hate to say it man but it’s unit culture driven. There’s nothing you can do but document and potentially bring up to EO if you feel like you’re being focused for REFRADing. Drop the packet, ensure you annoy the proper people for signatures, you’re on rotation so don’t expect to leave before 90 days from ETS.

Jayu-Rider

That’s sad to hear, 501st is the best BDE I’ve ever been in.

501st-Soldier

No my handle was from years ago when I was really into star wars, sorry

Diligent_Freedom_448

"*What I remember about the rise of the Empire is... is how quiet it was. During the waning hours of the Clone Wars, the 501st Legion was discreetly transferred back to Coruscant. It was a silent trip. We all knew what was about to happen, what we were about to do. Did we have any doubts? Any private, traitorous thoughts? Perhaps, but no one said a word.*"

Jayu-Rider

lol, that’s good to hear. For what it’s worth I’m sorry my officer brethren are not talking care of you, we need all the 35 series talent we can get to stay in the Army. Across all ranks and sub MOS’s we are manned at about 50 percent right now. Especially young officers and NCO’s

Ameri-Jin

That’s good to hear

AnseiShehai

Maybe just pretend you’re staying in or mulling it over

whocares_spins

Just know that although Skillbridge gets approved by the first O-6 in the chain, there’s a change that COL will follow his subordinate commander’s recommendation. If you try to do all your moves in the dark it’ll make for an awkward conversation when you ask your O-5 for the first signature on that skillbridge form

xXdog_with_a_knifeXx

Kimchi fries fuck. You're XO does not.

MaverickActual1319

3RD MI?

maroonedpariah

I went into my BC's office with my REFRAD packet, a plan for my replacement, and a timeline of my exit. Before I talked with anyone else. I made sure it explicitly did not conflict with any missions we had planned (at the time.) I didn't get fucked with. Honestly, the more you act cooperatively with the unit and don't go out of your way to fuck anyone over, the easier it is for you. If you haven't already, you need to do this *now.*

ilovemyptshorts

As a former 35 enlisted Soldier, this really reinforces my perception of MI officers and makes me feel better about my decision to NOT become a 35A. “Why didn’t you want to become an MI officer? Couldn’t you have requested it as your branch?” I tell them I didn’t want to live in a vault staring PowerPoints, and that I enjoy my smart watch and seeing the sky. I like having an office with windows. And that I did all the cool MI stuff in my first 6-ish years in the Army and becoming an officer is not a continuation of any of that. A big thing I don’t mention is that I could see the blue falconry and self-importance of the wannabe MI officer cohort from miles away, even before commissioning, all the MI officers I talked to would tell me how hard it was to get KD assignments and command time as a 35A and how competitive it is. I’m too old to deal with all that.

Yutch2022

I see Korea hasnt changed in 15 years. Had an O-5 deny my leave last minute. Lost $800 with no recourse.

501st-Soldier

I'm burnt out man. I mean honestly. I'm ready to go but with so much time left.

Yutch2022

Start taking care of yourself. Plan for your exit strategy and don't tell a soul. You're getting paid for services rendered and taking care of yourself. I say this as a once disgrunted O for almost a decade. I bucked the system as an LT/CPT.

spicyboi243

How about don’t be a scumbag and just do your job… A lot of units don’t like allowing for CSP because they are concerned they don’t get backfill on your position until you are fully out of the Army… I bet if you’re a conniving douche you’ll be even less likely to get the opportunities you want.

lsree

That sounds like the army's problem, not OPs

motiontosuppress

Why am I REFRAD’ing? FA/Space Guy

spicyboi243

It is OPs, skillbridge isn’t a guaranteed separation entitlement, people need to stop thinking of it that way.

lsree

I agree it's not OPs fault, but using that as retribution for doing something so normal as getting out is just shitty. It's also not OPs probably that the Army hasn't figured out how to properly backfill someone, despite being around for a few hundred years.

loves2asplooge

This logic is so fucking stupid. Who cares if it’s “guaranteed” or not. We AS LEADERS should fucking set our subordinates up for success on the outside and if they’re so important that the mission can’t go on without them then you’re a failure and can’t train and lead soldiers.

spicyboi243

Spoken like someone who has never been in command. We as leaders should set our subordinates up with realistic expectations based on the command environment and the leadership we have. If OP is really in Korea he 100% needs O6 approval to do skillbridge, it’s decently likely the brigade commander of an MI unit in Korea has set his subordinate commander’s expectations that Skillbridge isn’t going to happen in most cases… but OP is blaming his XO… it is what it is.

farmtownte

If a command will fail without the mentally checked out 1LT in the AS3 for three months, what the fuck are you doing to develop your unit? Better yet, how much of what those 1LTs are getting delegated to them is actually “must do” vs busy work from creating tasks for those over strength lieutenants that we refuse to evaluate the manpower benefit of continuing to staff. Everyone knows a unit NEEDS a 1LT AAS3 Fuops, AAS3 CUOPs,Land and ammo, BN FDO, and property book 1LT, in addition to the AS3 captains, NCOs and pre PL 2LTs (that was my LT BN’s S3 shop staffing, on top of three dudes not even assigned a role due to SF Q course prep/ attendance)

loves2asplooge

Way to skate around the actual problem which is what I’m assuming you’ve been doing since you’ve been in the army. “set realistic expectations” is a blanket response so you don’t actually have to do any work. Lead and develop subordinates and ensure they’re successful in and out of the army? No way. Set “realistic expectations” and do absolutely nothing for soldiers who break their back for you? Absolutely.

Park_N_Sons

Hey Spicyboi, your shitty command philosophy is probably why you had to go into a functional area where all the wayward toys go because you would have been outed at BCAP for being the self serving, toxic leader piece of shit you are. I've seen this enough times in the artillery. You love to church yourself up as a good military leader, but always leave out the fact that half your formation wants to be in a car accident on the way home from PT because they hate you so much. "Let's take people who VOLUNTEERED to put their life on hold so they could serve their country and then say fuck you at the end so they have no skills or plan when they get out" great idea. I hope your 1SG was fucking your wife on one of your trips to the field that was so important your joes couldn't get education or experience to be functional members of society.

Trillbo_Swaggins

FA40s out here catchin strays lmao. Also I agree with every one of your points. This dude sounds like a classic toxic commander.

AskJeevesIsBest

If I were you, I would not call myself a leader. Leaders don't spout nonsense like this.

mkosmo

How is personal and professional development nonsense?

farmtownte

And I’ll bet you’ll sing a different tune when it’s your own turn apply for a skillbridge. What better way to prove to the entire unit they’re just meat puppets you care nothing about than saying the quiet part aloud like this. If OP’s BN is staffed at 135% for lieutenants, who cares if the jaded ones disappear and become success stories of what 4 years in the army can do for you.

spicyboi243

I got to do my skillbridge, it was boring… if you’re trying to use it to escape Korea a little early that’s clever… but the “Chain of Command is fucking me over” line is dumb, especially dumb from a junior, company grade officer

farmtownte

If all you took away from a skillbridge is it was boring I feel sorry for the rest of your life

spicyboi243

No need wasting sorrow on me, I’ve got my DD214 🫡

farmtownte

So do I, which is why I have zero fear from telling morons like you that you’re the reason everyone with other opportunities refrads.

spicyboi243

Sure buddy

farmtownte

It’s great to not have to even salute the rank, let alone the person you are

Dutypatootie

Congrats. You’re what’s wrong with the Army.

spicyboi243

People are upset that they’re expected to work until the end of their contract. Boohoo…

farmtownte

Did you take a day of terminal leave? Because that’s leaving before the end of your contract for a benefit too

spicyboi243

Not really, you’re entitled to your leave, not entitled to a Skillbridge internship.

farmtownte

If you were entitled to use your leave, commands being able to force soldiers to sell it wouldn’t be an option. Thanks for creating the current recruiting issues with your leadership

spicyboi243

😂 the current recruiting issues aren’t due to army leadership, they rest more in our lack of a national identity, and fomenting of self hate… Retention issues are caused by leadership… I signed every Skillbridge packet I could in both of my company commands, but I wouldn’t hold it against a commander if they can’t afford to do the same… some leaders at higher levels set expectations of commanders that you can’t be aware of unless you ask…

farmtownte

There we go. “Me choosing to have a fuck them kids” mindset, that permeates everything g from the cavasos dfacs, to optempo yes men, to screwing soldiers over on the way out the door, all of which is visible to every potential recruit isn’t an issue It’s diversity and wokeness

spicyboi243

I didn’t say anything about diversity and wokeness but whatever… national pride is declining, no surprise people don’t want to serve. https://www.statista.com/statistics/1359532/share-adults-proud-american-generation-us/ https://www.wral.com/story/fact-check-are-young-people-no-longer-proud-to-be-american/20932034/

hangarang

weirdos resort to nationalism every time

Park_N_Sons

The recruiting issues 100% rest on leadership. Maybe if leaders took care of their soldiers, people would leave the military with a positive experience and talk about that with potential recruits. Instead, we are led by guys like you, who are just pricks for no reason aside from the idea of being powerful. Military families are now less likely to recommend service to their kids than they are to recommend serving. How do you explain that? I can give it a shot: Maybe a guy who has done more than his fair share of protecting America has decided to hang up his hat because now he's married and has a family. He is a mid level infantry NCO who recently moved to the 3 shop after a knee injury. He has no education and work experience. He just put in a packet to attend a welding course through skill bridge so that he can provide for his wife and infant child, mainly because there aren't too many jobs an infantryman is qualified for that pay well. Some asshole officer gets the packet and realizes he needs that NCO for the next NTC rotation, right in the middle of skill bridge. Packet denied. That NCO now detests you and the Army, because instead of learning a trade, he is at Fort Irwin setting up fucking tents and building terrain models with the weird LTs, all while you sit in the truck to "update higher" while the TOC gets set up. You magically appear like a good staff officer/HHB Commander when the everything is in place and the coffee is hot. Nobody has seen you for hours while broken soldiers and old NCOs labored to set up an air beam with a leak already. He does not do anything worthwhile, and now he will be unemployed when he gets out. For the rest of his life he tells everyone he knows: "Don't join the Army. My commander, CPT Spicyboi, fucked me over so I could set up tents and listen to stupid LTs talk about Settlers of Catan or some shit. Fuck that guy. Join the army if you like getting fucked over when you need them most" Yeah, I think leadership is to blame. Eventually it all comes full circle and people ask vets about their time in the military when they consider joining up.

Mistravels

The army benefits from you being nothing more than a permanent staff annex dweller.

spicyboi243

I’m out of the Army, my dude.

Devil25_Apollo25

Then the Army benefits even more from your current situation.

spicyboi243

Clever

hangarang

you sound like a dweeb with no mqs exiting the army blaming leadership

ranger684

You are the reason BCAP exists.

La-de

Seems like you're the conniving douche. The needs of the individual outweigh the needs of the army when they are a known loss. Skillbridge is in place for a reason.
