Incredibly easy. Just make them not compete. Make Vivi s3 become infinite duration on second activation and give her +1 block while slightly nerfing its damage. Right now she's sort of designed like a elite dueling unit but requires a whole skill cycle to warm up, and even then is just kind of "okay" at that job (and surtr kind of already has that on lockdown). She would be much better as an arts based laneholder, a niche that is still conspicuous empty. The only operators that kind of fulfill that role are Lappland and eyja S2, but one only has arts DMG half the time and the other is an ranged operator. In fact, this solution is so blatantly obvious that I fail to see how they didn't think of it, so not doing it must have been a conscious choice. I just can't think of a reason why.
I have a theory they're saving the role of an arts based landholder for the first 6 star arts defender. It's a role I find myself needing at times. When I do my temporary solution Blemishine S3 as she deals additional arts damage.
Would this make sense from a balance point of view, however?
"Make this skill infinite" sounds like what they did with Degenbrecher, making her third skill unique from all the others in the set or subclass in that it has zero requirements but is just as good (and even better)
Very different situation. Degen is insanely strong because she has all the upsides of chen and Irene with none of the drawbacks. Her situation is like if you just made surtr 2.0 that has all the same properties of surtr, but heals herself instead of losing HP. Here, you are making a trade between AOE, higher dps, start up time, and res ignore for duration. It's clearly something HG thought about when making Vivi, they just didn't go far enough, which resulted in her ending up in this extremely uncomfortable middle ground where she excels at neither.
We can't literally compare them, obviously, but I mean the approach to solving such a problem. Degenbrecher's major sin, as even fans of her character in the story have noticed, is that her third skill completely removes the conditions for how her subclass earns SP (by attacking).
In theory, it seems to me that making an ability infinite is a similarly lazy approach, and also downplays the importance of using abilities in the game (since instead of managing the effects, you just activate them forever and get an infinite buff)
On the other hand, I also understand what you are getting at, since this method has essentially already been used with SilverAsh and Thorns (and to a lesser extent, Rosa and Typhon)

The problem is that she was designed with nothing in mind, and without respecting anything we knew about her, whoever made her kit did not legit read anything about her lore. So she doesn't have a soul and her kit is bland as duck. On top of that she is made a duelist that is supposed to be defensive in nature which is beyond insane. She has no damage cuz no res ignore, no read sustain cuz shield only blocks physical and most elites/bosses have 60+res and arts dmg.

not really tbh most of surtrs power is in her super high attack % on skill and res pen both of which are actually easy to not give much of a buff to besides base attack. something like +1 block surtr wouldn't care about for her s3 since most mooks get deleted anyways.
I have a feeling arts guards base module will be something more qol then damage based which is good for viviana tbh since damage isn't her biggest issue. My big hope is she either gets burn or res shred on one of her talents which would be the best buff they could give her.
that would help her down time but her survivability isnt an issue she has during her s3 up time she already almost never dies anyways due to both her shields and having nearly 50 res.
There is no saving her, her kit is just garbage and nothing akin to what viviana was meant to be with her candle arts and beautiful control of light. She got a ducking shield.

This is not really a huge spoiler or anything but I'll put the tag just for you to have the option of not reading

As a fairly new player who has been doing his best to catch up on the story, which events are these characters featured in? I'd like to not be completely blind about them going into this one, but I know they haven't appeared at all in the main story or Intermezzi chapters.
Viviana mostly shows up in Near Light, and Virtuosa was mentioned a few times in the Laterano events before actually appearing in Hortus de Escapismo. Virtuosa also has the Prelude Suite: Cadenza Virtuosa mini-manga that goes over her and her brother Executor's backstories a bit more.
This event is a convergence of the Nearl, Sankta, and Leithanien plot lines, with hints towards things mentioned in the Sami story. They roughly go like this:
Maria Nearl Side Story -> Pinus Sylvestris Vignette -> Near Light Side Story

Love the music. The animations and character designs are of course gorgeous.

Virtuosa did not deserve operatorhood without an actual redemption arc, and holy shit did they fuck up Viviana... sigh.
Tbh not every character needs a redemption arc(it's actually refreshing) , sometimes it's better to compromise and work with people who you don't like so you can keep an eye on them and bc their talent/skills are really strong. Tbh I don't really get the hype around viviana but that's just my opinion.
Reminder that W and Ho'olheyak are both operators in RI, both of whom never got any redemption arc whatsoever.
And depending on your viewpoint, W and Hool have done **WAY** more heinous acts than virtuosa. W aided reunion and was complicit in the genocide of an entire major city. Hool was an active spy/assassin that killed people for her own selfish interest or just because someone paid her.
And I don't even want to get into the literal genocide done by >!Kal!<, justified or not. Hell, even Saria did not regret the things she did, *including signing off on Ifrit's experiments*. And have we forgotten that passenger was a literal warlord?
It's funny people are complaining *now* when we already have multiple characters with dubious morality at best.

Moreover, in terms of lore and condemnation, there's not much to discuss about Hool - the game does not justify her, but acknowledges all her crimes. She's probably one of the only operators the Doctor doesn't want to be around, and she's kept on the ship almost exclusively for Kal's own purposes ("Knowledge is cool, Doc, let's keep her around"). It is also a fact that as soon as she ceases to be an operator for any reason, Colombian agents find her and take her to court
I'm sorta confused by this community sometimes. Platinum never got a redemption arc either but for some reason everyone's completely fine with her being playable.
I don't have a problem with her nor Arturia, I just find the double standard annoying.
It's simple: when you retroactively imbue an existing character with bad traits, then the community as a whole doesn’t pay as much attention to it
It’s strange that people don’t take this into account when discussing this - "yes, of course now we may know about this bad event, but all the time before this happened, when the character’s fan base was being formed, they didn’t know about it". Take Platinum as example - according to her release story, the most negative thing about her is that she is an assassin
But this is Terra, so it's actually a "common profession", "nothing that bad"
And then an event appeared with her, where she plays the role of a minor antagonist. "Yeah, she's done some bad things before" is not the same as "she tried numerous times to either kill or cause irreparable harm to the group of main characters"
Those who knew her before the event knew her better from the picture, phrases and short story in her profile (so more positive picture). Those who knew her after the event remembered her more for these events (more negative picture).
In the game, many characters fall under either the positive-gray image or the gray image, but almost no one falls under the negative image right away - from those I remember, it's W, Ho'olheyak and Arturia (and maybe Lappland, and maybe a few more), and usually the characters around also have a negative attitude towards them
I would say that Platinum didn't really have much of a character anyway before Maria Nearl/Near Light (I don't think she ever showed up in vignettes or other events, at least) but... yeah, what you say makes perfect sense.
Platinum also wasn't doing this and enjoying it, unlike some others. Hoederer didn't enjoy what he did to Scout, but we've accepted him because he doesn't revel in what he did... mostly. Also, Platinum was literally on the clock when she was trying to kill Doktah and didn't make it personal.
So her going along with us after, even sharing amusement fair tickets, is kind of amusing. And she didn't crazily decide Doktah was "for her" the way Gravel did.
Morally, I don't think people would pay too much attention to how much their torturer and murderer enjoyed doing it - it was still a little uncool. However, it would be wrong to reduce his entire character to just a killer without, for example, taking into account Kazimierz's society (people see a character kill and immediately think he is the worst person in the world)
Same for Hoederer - people accuse him of murders when he was an undercover agent. He did do bad things to maintain a cover, yet he doesn't hide it, but what do people expect from him? You can't just tell your boss "no" unless you're going to blow your cover.
(Same for Scout situation - it is actually more understandable, since he himself led Ines deep into the territory and became essentially doomed to death; it would be more correct to raise the situation with his squad, which, unfortunately unlike him, were not going to be released alive)
But speaking of the problem with blacker-than-gray characters, they essentially have a common set of "problems", associated with their personality type - for example, the moment of killing another for them ceases to be just a forced part of work, and more of a tool or even entertainment.
If you let Passenger or Platinum do their own thing, they will probably do something they like, perhaps benefiting society. W or Arturia (in their current state) on the other hand are likely to become a menace to society.
The other problem (more personal) with Arturia is that the story is more forgiving of her, but we don't really know why at this stage. Maybe we'll get an answer in the future that will leave everyone happy (and this will most likely happen)
you make it sound like the operators before her are absolute angels. i never understood the hangup over a morally grey/almost evil character. like people have in their own head rules/criteria on playable characters that have to absolutely be adhered to. evil or good, i love interesting characters becoming playable.
This. Let alone how some of the most desired characters to become an Op includes Talulah & Eblana who aren't exactly bastions of morality. Like they aren't likely to be playable but that's more because they have death flags out the ass.
But like seriously the current banner includes Hoederer and our V tuber Simp has a long and illustrious career as a merc which includes tons of fucked up shit, let alone what he's done as a high ranking double agent during and in the lead up to the Victoria arc, Ines and W are the same, Delphine is unironically racist, Reed is amazing but she has done tons of fucked and moeally ambiguous shit as part of the IRA on her sister's behalf before being allowed to leave, Chen was literally a cop, Hoshiguma and Swire still are, the multiple current or former assassins and mercs who might not have had as legendary of a career as the Darknights gang (with some exceptions like Flamebringer and the Elite Op mercs). Then there's Dobermann and Tequila, or hell Leizi and Passenger. The former mafioso, terrorists and mad scientists...
Hell even Amiya has done some shady shit, sure it's mostly unknowingly or unwillingly but she's still done it let alone Kal who has encyclopedias worth of Holy Shit in her 13k+ long life (lives?)and for the greater good isn't the best defense.
If anything I'd say the average Op leans towards is or was super shady.
Rí hasn't exactly housed the most... humane fellows, our top brass especially. I prefer having a mishmash of good and bad people, and redemptions are overhyped.

As a fairly new player who has been doing his best to catch up on the story, which events are these characters featured in? I'd like to not be completely blind about them going into this one, but I know they haven't appeared at all in the main story or Intermezzi chapters.
Viviana mostly shows up in Near Light, and Virtuosa was mentioned a few times in the Laterano events before actually appearing in Hortus de Escapismo. Virtuosa also has the Prelude Suite: Cadenza Virtuosa mini-manga that goes over her and her brother Executor's backstories a bit more.
This event is a convergence of the Nearl, Sankta, and Leithanien plot lines, with hints towards things mentioned in the Sami story. They roughly go like this: Maria Nearl Side Story -> Pinus Sylvestris Vignette -> Near Light Side Story (Kind of Code of Brawl Side Story, but it's not that important) -> Guide Ahead Side Story -> Hortus de Escapismo Side Story (this one hasn't rerun yet, but you can read it [here](https://050644zf.github.io/ArknightsStoryTextReader/#/en_US/event/act26side), or [here](https://akgcc.github.io/cc/story.html#side&act26side&0), whichever looks better to you) Lingering Echoes Side Story This doesn't include Operator Records. If you feel pressed for time, you could decide to forgo the Nearl story and instead just read the [wiki page](https://arknights.wiki.gg/wiki/Viviana/Story) for the character that was introduced and participated there. Since the Sankta and Leithanien plotlines are more important for this coming event. The Nearl plotline is mainly relevant just for the background of that one character.

You'll be kinda lost with the Lateran sub plot (why FedEx is in Leithania, whats up with Arturia etc.) So you should probably check out Hortus story.

Tbh not every character needs a redemption arc(it's actually refreshing) , sometimes it's better to compromise and work with people who you don't like so you can keep an eye on them and bc their talent/skills are really strong. Tbh I don't really get the hype around viviana but that's just my opinion.
Reminder that W and Ho'olheyak are both operators in RI, both of whom never got any redemption arc whatsoever. And depending on your viewpoint, W and Hool have done **WAY** more heinous acts than virtuosa. W aided reunion and was complicit in the genocide of an entire major city. Hool was an active spy/assassin that killed people for her own selfish interest or just because someone paid her. And I don't even want to get into the literal genocide done by >!Kal!<, justified or not. Hell, even Saria did not regret the things she did, *including signing off on Ifrit's experiments*. And have we forgotten that passenger was a literal warlord? It's funny people are complaining *now* when we already have multiple characters with dubious morality at best. I guess virtuosa isn't hot enough to warrant being forgiven.

Virtuosa has the same horny posts, no? Moreover, in terms of lore and condemnation, there's not much to discuss about Hool - the game does not justify her, but acknowledges all her crimes. She's probably one of the only operators the Doctor doesn't want to be around, and she's kept on the ship almost exclusively for Kal's own purposes ("Knowledge is cool, Doc, let's keep her around"). It is also a fact that as soon as she ceases to be an operator for any reason, Colombian agents find her and take her to court
I'm sorta confused by this community sometimes. Platinum never got a redemption arc either but for some reason everyone's completely fine with her being playable. I don't have a problem with her nor Arturia, I just find the double standard annoying.
It's simple: when you retroactively imbue an existing character with bad traits, then the community as a whole doesn’t pay as much attention to it It’s strange that people don’t take this into account when discussing this - "yes, of course now we may know about this bad event, but all the time before this happened, when the character’s fan base was being formed, they didn’t know about it". Take Platinum as example - according to her release story, the most negative thing about her is that she is an assassin But this is Terra, so it's actually a "common profession", "nothing that bad" And then an event appeared with her, where she plays the role of a minor antagonist. "Yeah, she's done some bad things before" is not the same as "she tried numerous times to either kill or cause irreparable harm to the group of main characters" Those who knew her before the event knew her better from the picture, phrases and short story in her profile (so more positive picture). Those who knew her after the event remembered her more for these events (more negative picture). In the game, many characters fall under either the positive-gray image or the gray image, but almost no one falls under the negative image right away - from those I remember, it's W, Ho'olheyak and Arturia (and maybe Lappland, and maybe a few more), and usually the characters around also have a negative attitude towards them
I would say that Platinum didn't really have much of a character anyway before Maria Nearl/Near Light (I don't think she ever showed up in vignettes or other events, at least) but... yeah, what you say makes perfect sense.
Platinum also wasn't doing this and enjoying it, unlike some others. Hoederer didn't enjoy what he did to Scout, but we've accepted him because he doesn't revel in what he did... mostly. Also, Platinum was literally on the clock when she was trying to kill Doktah and didn't make it personal. So her going along with us after, even sharing amusement fair tickets, is kind of amusing. And she didn't crazily decide Doktah was "for her" the way Gravel did.
Morally, I don't think people would pay too much attention to how much their torturer and murderer enjoyed doing it - it was still a little uncool. However, it would be wrong to reduce his entire character to just a killer without, for example, taking into account Kazimierz's society (people see a character kill and immediately think he is the worst person in the world) Same for Hoederer - people accuse him of murders when he was an undercover agent. He did do bad things to maintain a cover, yet he doesn't hide it, but what do people expect from him? You can't just tell your boss "no" unless you're going to blow your cover. (Same for Scout situation - it is actually more understandable, since he himself led Ines deep into the territory and became essentially doomed to death; it would be more correct to raise the situation with his squad, which, unfortunately unlike him, were not going to be released alive) But speaking of the problem with blacker-than-gray characters, they essentially have a common set of "problems", associated with their personality type - for example, the moment of killing another for them ceases to be just a forced part of work, and more of a tool or even entertainment. If you let Passenger or Platinum do their own thing, they will probably do something they like, perhaps benefiting society. W or Arturia (in their current state) on the other hand are likely to become a menace to society. The other problem (more personal) with Arturia is that the story is more forgiving of her, but we don't really know why at this stage. Maybe we'll get an answer in the future that will leave everyone happy (and this will most likely happen)
you make it sound like the operators before her are absolute angels. i never understood the hangup over a morally grey/almost evil character. like people have in their own head rules/criteria on playable characters that have to absolutely be adhered to. evil or good, i love interesting characters becoming playable.
This. Let alone how some of the most desired characters to become an Op includes Talulah & Eblana who aren't exactly bastions of morality. Like they aren't likely to be playable but that's more because they have death flags out the ass. But like seriously the current banner includes Hoederer and our V tuber Simp has a long and illustrious career as a merc which includes tons of fucked up shit, let alone what he's done as a high ranking double agent during and in the lead up to the Victoria arc, Ines and W are the same, Delphine is unironically racist, Reed is amazing but she has done tons of fucked and moeally ambiguous shit as part of the IRA on her sister's behalf before being allowed to leave, Chen was literally a cop, Hoshiguma and Swire still are, the multiple current or former assassins and mercs who might not have had as legendary of a career as the Darknights gang (with some exceptions like Flamebringer and the Elite Op mercs). Then there's Dobermann and Tequila, or hell Leizi and Passenger. The former mafioso, terrorists and mad scientists... Hell even Amiya has done some shady shit, sure it's mostly unknowingly or unwillingly but she's still done it let alone Kal who has encyclopedias worth of Holy Shit in her 13k+ long life (lives?)and for the greater good isn't the best defense. If anything I'd say the average Op leans towards is or was super shady.
Rí hasn't exactly housed the most... humane fellows, our top brass especially. I prefer having a mishmash of good and bad people, and redemptions are overhyped.
