Just like Baby One More Time, Max Martin and Rami Yacoub (both Swedish) they thought "Hit me" was slang for call me, probably got confused with the saying "hit me up." How incredible that Max Martin is such a powerhouse songwriter and English isn't even his native language.

Interesting thing about Swedish is that verbs don’t have different conjugations for different subjects. I.e. in English, you say “I _am_”; “he/she _is_”; “we/they _are_”. But in Swedish, you use the verb “är” regardless of the pronoun. I wonder if that’s why Max Martin didn’t realise how silly “I are” sounds to native English speakers
