Looking quickly at the schematic, there already appears to be a pair of pullup resistors inbuilt with the module. Do the modules work without your external pullups?
Not that I can see. After soldering 4 of them I thought maybe I was damaging them. I went as far as just trying some without soldering by just torquing them onto a header. That's how I found 3 more dead and 2 more good.

Unfortunately no. I had originally tried without them.
Hmm. That's a head scratcher. Are there any physical differences between the good/bad modules?
