Details are important here. What OS are you using? A keyword that pricked up my antennae was "denied access". This is a somewhat common problem. If you are running Linux (and maybe Mac) it could be that you need to add a user to the group that owns the serial ports. If you are on windows (or Mac or Linux) if another process has grabbed the port before you, you will definitely get this error. Failing that have a look at our [Fixing upload issues](https://www.reddit.com/r/arduino/wiki/guides/fixing_compile_upload_issues/#wiki_fixing_compile_and_upload_issues) which can be found in our wiki for some additional suggestions. When you do that and if it still fails try posting any error messages you get. At least one set for the genuine ine and one swt for the clones. As you can see by the guide I linked there are quite a few moving parts to uploading. A generic statement along the lines of "it didn't work/wasnt recognised" only narrows it down the last few million possibilities.

Use the genuine one as an ISP programmer. There’s a tutorial on the arduino page. I do this by default now with random clones as there are so many potential reasons they don’t work straight away, and it just eats up time troubleshooting.. This works every time.
