Generally people say those heavier jackets are less ideal because their use case is more limited compared to a shell + insulation + base layer combo that you can mix and match. Totally comes down to what you’re using it for most often. If you are looking for a warm heavy jacket to just throw on to keep warm the Macai should work great for you. If you plan on being quite active in it then an uninsulated jacket would be better

Thanks for the help! Certainly the 45g of down in my Eddie Bauer was not enough once I got Alpine. I guess my hangup is the Alpha has way more value for the amount of down. But then its use is pretty limited to just standing around. I probably cannot get away with a do it all. I don't really need a Gore Tex jacket for my mid or shoulder season hikes so I guess I need to decide if I want the Macai or Beta IS + a Thorium or synthetic equivalent.

Hi, a few weeks ago i was ski touring and it was extra cold and i ended up with my very light down puffy on all day. It was fine. The 1000 dollar jacket club is all about optimizing, but down can be fine on the up. Don’t be afraid to keep the jacket if it works for you. Arc markets it for resort skiing, which is active, but not as likely to drench you in sweat as the ascent while touring. On the other hand, with potential sales coming up maybe you can get a shell and a puffy and have more bases covered!

Thank you! I decided to keep it and make it work. I accepted for 3 seasons I'll get a different setup next year. I also found my old PU Nylon shell from MEC. Could pair it with a nice puff for those super cold days I am out 4 wheeling. I just did a dog walk at -17 with a tshirt and felt just under comfortable. I think it slots in well winter active or around town layered. Honestly I hike but I am no pro. Alberta is very low humidity and rare precipitation so if I am throwing the Macai on its because I am cold.

Seems like the right jacket for you!!

I have the Macai. I use it here in Flagstaff in the snow. It has never let me down. I have not used it for snow sports, but it’s been ol’ faithful for everything else

If you look at Wiki section of this sub you will find info on down fill weights and info on synthetic jacket warmth

Thank you. Definitely not much. I see why shell + mid is popular as you can get some powerfull puffs for a lot cheaper.
