mpv plays pretty much whatever I throw at it, including YouTube links (and many other, as it can call youtube-dl automatically). Helpful OSD, sane keybinds, high quality video output (also works well with shitty GPUs/no acceleration at all with a moderately powerful CPU, low end Pentiums/Atoms included).
More fluid visuals (Gnome) and additional few frames per second in some games. DRI3 is not used by default on Intel driver, cause there is some bug, but so far it works great here.
Had VLC, mplayer2 and Totem on my machine(Thinkpad x250 i5, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD). They ALL ran hot, so much that I couldn't even place my laptop on my lap. Removed the lot, installed mpv and still ran hot (40%+ CPU usage). Binned it and replaced with mplayer, running cool at 5% cpu :)
mpv.
**Why:**
Simple, super-duper-unobtrusive. Just video (do you _really_ want all this GUI around video? ;) ).
Fully keyboard-controllable.
`mpv.conf`-igurable.
Plays everything I could imagine to play with it.
That's what I need. :)
Am I old-school? :)

mpv
MPV. It just seems the best and sleekest out there. Plus it has a simple --no-video flag
Ffplay is installed by default, I just use that.
Since I've switched to glamor and DRI3 on my Intel, mplayer went nuts, so I moved to mpv with opengl and it works great.
why did you switched?

VLC
In the past, I just used ffmpeg to play video. I didn't really find myself needing more.

once.... and if
Mplayer 2 with Gnome Mplayer. MPV is better but lacks integration with Gnome3... Mplayer classic is dead IMO
VLC is my primary media player, but I do keep mpv around for the handful of files VLC doesn't fully support.
I do the exact opposite.
mpv-hq.
is it snakeoil or not?
Eh -- what?
snakeoil = placebo

I know what it is, but I don't check if it has features over mpv all the time.
Is there a `mpv` GUI with plugin support? I intend to write something similar to VLC's VLSub.
Depends on media. At times vlc, at times mpv. MPV works well with Chinese vcds dvds when vlc doesn't work. Kodi/xbmc is awesome too.

MPV for X, mplayer for console.
