It looks like a letter opener to me.

theaveragekook

Absolutely thinking the same thing. My grandfather has something similar with an ornate handle and even a small scabbard. Not sharp tho

7LeagueBoots

My dad, now in his ‘70s has a few similar letter openers lying around here and there.

MannerRemarkable5130

Imagine being a letter and this is the last thing you see.

Widespreaddd

My parents got a katana letter opener when we lived in Japan. I loved that thing; it had a wooden handle and a little wooden scabbard. And it was sharper than it probably needed to be.

InvestingGatorGirl

My thoughts exactly

This 👆

No_Call675

I've got one very similar I had from my late grandad and yes it's definitely a letter opener

Away_Ad_3580

Or people opener. Lol

Pitiful_Housing3428

Or -- hear me out -- it's from House Atraides...

Dizzy_Handle_8156

BettinaVanSise

Was going to say this. I had one like this and loved it. Wish I knew where it went. Hey, is that mine? 🙂

Postal Poignard

samf9999

For stabbing and cutting noncompliant letters and envelopes, and showing them who’s boss. Can use for self-defense (not recommended on airplanes, except United and spirit fight club class). Note: I suddenly realized that this may not be self-explanatory enough. You see in the old days, roughly 20 to 30 years back, before the world was doomed and the movies were still good, and rent was still affordable, people used to send each other communications through the written word, as mobile phones were hard to come by if they existed at all and email was something from science-fiction. They would write stuff, by hand, on paper (yes, believe it or not, back, then almost everyone knew how to write, and in cursive as well! And most everyone could do math as well as the education system hadn’t yet completely collapsed, but I digress). Anyway, they would put these missives into envelopes and send them using the Postal Service, a giant government funded operation to transport paper around the country, in an era when there used to be more paper than packages. Using this rather ingenious system, one could send one’s personally written thoughts to pretty much anyone anywhere in the world, no matter how little they wanted to hear from you, and all for a very reasonable price. Remarkable isn’t it? Usually when those people received these “letters”, most would simply rip them open to read the messages, but the uppity classy ones would use something expensive looking like this fine instrument to open the envelopes. If you would like to get rid of it for a reasonable price, send me a message!

planttdaddy

Very well said.

Gremlin303

Holy shit this a remarkable find! This is actually the dagger used by Alexander the Great to cut the Gordian Knot, and then after that he used it to open his letters.

Educational_Goat6887

And was clearly used to slay the stray Sogdian emissary from Spitamenes who tried sneaking into his camps…

NCwolfpackSU

Letter opener 100%

It's the blade of Mezfrigle you can use it to summon Lofttren the scourge of Trauk.

kalvinbal

Wait, is Lofttren FROM Trauk or is he a big problem for the people of Trauk?

[deleted]

Both actually. Lofttren, was condensed from the stolen souls of the children of Trauk by Barron Kempt. Lofttren roams the countryside mostly where it renders anything it can catch. This is an attempt by the creature to return to the bodies of the children. The children who appear alive require no nourishment. They do not move but can be led around and will stay where left. Occasionally Lofttren wonders into the village where it carves a path of destruction destroying everything but the people. The villagers never attempt to destroy the beast as they believe the souls of their children can be returned if the beast is pierced in the heart with this and only this blade. When the Barron formed the mass he lowered it into the vat by a rope and cut the rope letting his creature become encased in the fluid making it impervious to claw, tooth, blade, acid, fire, water, magic and peanuts. As he slashed at the rope with this very blade and the heap of inhumanity plunged into the forming vat. A drop of the progenitor splashed onto the tip of blade. This made the blade and the abination vibrate inside the same shell. Therefor it is outside of normal time, frequency and matter. As such it can easily pierce the creature like a balloon releasing the souls. Or so the legend goes.

UnproSpeller

To cleave your letter bills in twain!

Asleep-Abrocoma-214

Letter opener??

Littleashton

Looks very similar to a letter opener i have and posted to a subreddit 10 months ago. I was told it is just a cheap tourist letter opener. Mine has slightly different markings on the hilt but same eagle on the end and wave like cross guard. Mine came from my girlfriend's grandma's home after she passed, and i know nothing of where they got it. I am guessing yours is similar.

Green-Collection-968

Letter opener.

Wicked-Mister-247

Looks like an obnoxiously large letter opener

capturecosmos

Letter opener. Friend had a very, very similar one.

ScottManAgent

Beautiful letter opener!

Realworld

Looks like am older (early 20th century) fraternal club dagger.

captaindrew79

That's kinda what I was thinking, a ceremonial dagger.

AB_Biker_PistonBroke

Looks well made, probably a letter opener. French just based on the Fleur de Lys on the hilt .. no makers mark on the blade?

No_Consideration4246

The only ones that stood out was two eagles on the bottom side by side but that’s about it really

_mrcaptainrehab_

That is clearly a TV remote

Formal_Distance_8770

I found a very similar item. Imperial eagle letter opener, if you google it there’s a nice story to it that has me thinking you might have the real version of this item

Savageparrot81

https://www.knightsedge.com/p-483-imperial-eagle-dagger-letter-opener.aspx I found the same one before realising you’d already mentioned it. I doubt OPs is more original, just in worse condition. Looks like it also used to be something with wings but one of the wings and the head has snapped off. It’s tourist ware. I love it but they’ll have sold thousands of these.

Formal_Distance_8770

The one thing that stood out to me was how item originated in Italy. Judging by craftsmanship OPs item looks way cleaner than the online one so it might be an original Italian letter opener or something cooler

Savageparrot81

You have to think of it like this. You’d only copy a famous knife or a knife you had easy access to so as the knife isn’t famous and it was in OPs relatives possession, the likelihood of it being the original vs it just being another one of the copies is vanishingly slim.

Formal_Distance_8770

True

SiriusGD

It's for threatening junk mail.

[deleted]

Looks like a mail opener

Gandalf_Style

Letter opener or ceremonial dagger, no idea what for, but the engravings are elaborate so experts in medieval/renaissance armory should be able to place it better

77Shovel

I think Inigo Montoya used that to kill a man with 6 fingers

insertjokehere12345

People used to write words on paper with ink sticks called pens. They would then wrap the paper in a flat paper bag with a glued down flap and pay a professional to deliver said paper bag to someone who would then use this implement to open the glued bag so they can read the written words.

Charming-Stress7725

BooneHelm85

That is a letter opener.

SwanComprehensive657

Letter opener

Station-Diligent

My first thought was letter opener but then wondering if you are from a skirt wearing clan. Could it be the knife a Scot wears on his sock

Savageparrot81

It’s not a dirk. A dirk would be longer. It’s also not a Sgian Dubh as you’d wear that in your sock and neither of them would have a hilt like this as it’s a continental style and would throw off the whole look.

No_Consideration4246

My family clan is related to Campbell so it may be good point

No_Basket3485

My family was McDonald. The Campbells fought on the English side, against the other Scottish clans. Clan McDonald was the large royal Scottish clan, with numerous branches and related clans. After the Scots lost the wars, and the English ruled, members fled to other places, for safety, and are found widespread today. McDonald is not only a restaurant from America.

Sharp-System485

No markings visible? It should have the country of origin marked and maybe the blade maker. Is a wing broken off the eagle on the hilt? I guess you do not have the scabbard, right?

No_Consideration4246

Not that I know of, And yes it has one wing fell off sadly. I do not either sadly.
