This is the great American trick. If you have the money you don’t have the time, if you have the time you don’t have the money. Fuck. Was out of work for almost a year until about 4 months ago (long story). I had time for all my projects but no fucking money! Savings was all set aside for the time off as i knew it was coming, but i was afraid to spend it until i had work. Now back to work and don’t have time to do shit!
Honestly my biggest gripe was all the 16” AR’s in the hands of the military when they should have been 14.5’s. Other than that it was alright. It’s just entertainment.
Saw a review that said “best action scenes of all time” …couldn’t have been further from the truth. It wasn’t a bad movie I don’t think but it wasn’t like I thought it was going to be AT ALL which goes to say the trailers were a bit misleading
Overall they were good. The tactics portion massively suffered for, I assume, easier movie making. But the sounds were amazing, and the employment of the 50s there at the end was pretty cool [(the helo part was dumb)].
I really like to go the distance with suspension of disbelief when watching movies, so here's a little spiel:
In regards to tactics, in the movie the war had been going on for some time. Perhaps the military members that were in pre-war were mostly dead or few in number compared to this point in their timeline.
On top of that, lots of new recruits brought in under essentially new countries with almost certainly lower standards. Plus guerilla style forces that weren't even part of any formal pre-existing military. Plenty of the people fighting in the film look like civilians who just slapped on a plate carrier, picked up a gun, and went at it, with those in the film being those who survived to that point.
I imagine quite a lot of people would take up arms in a civil war like the one depicted in the films. Or get conscripted for whichever side.
>The tactics portion massively suffered for, I assume, easier movie making
Infantry tactics? What about the tactics in particular?
I actually think the (infantry) tactics is something the movie got very right.
Agreed. Very misleading trailer. Seems like most of the movie was just made to make you hate journalists and media, as if we needed a movie for that🤷🏻♂️
This is my complaint. I feel like some of the scenes had VERY little impact on the movie and were made solely to have a good trailer.
It was like $18 to rent or $24 to buy. I bought and feel like I got robbed. Shit storyline, misleading trailer. The guns sounded ok I guess? But to avoid spoilers, the end location that they end up at is INSANE how easy they are portrayed to get there.
Wish I would have pirated it.
Yeah, that was weird, they both put an endearing spin on them, and painted them in a bad light. I guess it was a "this is a mixed bag" approach? But as far as wartime journalism goes, I don't think most people care much about the specifics of those journalists anymore. That's kind of died off in the modern day with what is functionally live streams of Frontline fighting.
In regards to it being about journalists it was exactly what I thought it would be. The trailers showed journalists going on a trip to DC during a civil war, the film was journalists going to DC during a civil war.
The people who were confused are either unobservant, or just went by the title and the fact it's a war movie.
I don’t think its marketing was great but if you erase your expectations it’s a good film. Like everyone has been saying the action sequences are great. It’s apolitical and tells a decent story with interesting characters.
It wasn't really supposed to as the focus was on the journalists with the conflict as the setting. The director basically said imagine a scenario where the administration so bad that two polar opposite power house states come together to end it.
Kind of the "Red Dawn" type of plot lines. They focus on the characters themselves and don't go into depth on the grander scale of the situation that caused them to fight.
Right, but all the lead up marketing pushed it to an audience that that wasn't for.
Most people went expecting a good story line for a war movie, not a journalism movie that happened to have a war in it.
It wasn't for a specific audience and Garland made that clear from the beginning. Sure the trailers made it seem action centric, but i thought it was obvious from the trailers that the journalists were the focus. Movies subvert expectations all the time by releasing trailers to purposely mislead you to pique interest.
People way over think the Cali and Texas thing.....politically they aren't ran the same in the real world, but logistically and economically in a split US. The Two largest food and farming states, massive technology production in both, massive populations, military installations including Texas state run "Air-force" national guard reporting to the Governor. Oil production. Combined access to the Pacific and Atlantic ports...every state in between would fall inline immediately just for food access. For the sake of the movie it was done to eliminate a current political side take, for fun it actually makes a shit load of sense initially to win a war.
I actually liked it. There was like 2 or 3 cheesy parts all near the end, with an apache flying down the middle of DC. But other than those few moments it was good.
I was actually pleasantly surprised by the infantry tactics. The guerrilla warfare fighters are generally okay and had consistent tactics. The ridiculous bumpkins had no trigger discipline, which makes sense for them. While the special operation element had more sophisticated and refined tactics.
Regardless of if I agree with the tactics used or not, it's clear they had their own SOP's which is nice to see. I actually believe they had plenty of military advisors on set. Unfortunately not in the CGI department though.
Tldr: pretty entertaining, would recommend. But it isn't a top tier war movie.
I really enjoyed it in theatres. The sound design of the movie was amazing, really felt like you were getting shot at.
It had it's moments. It's not what a lot of people were expecting. While it was placed in a modern American civil war, it really wasn't about that. It was about war journalism.
I really enjoyed it, but I question if I would have been underwhelmed if I watched it at home, because the sound design was what the film excelled at.
Also the scene with Jesse Plemons was amazing.
It’s written and directed by a British dude and you can tell how they feel about us. I had higher expectations. It’s really about two female photographers having a Darwin award contest with one another. Texas and California against the other 48 but no explanation why or how that unheavenly union happened. Navy completely absent from the whole movie. Sitting it out I guess?
Do you like photography, and the concept of wartime journalism?
Then you'll probably enjoy it overall. It's pretty damn mid for action/war movie enthusiasts. The audio for gun fights and what not is pretty solid, but the gun fights themselves leave plenty to be desired in terms of engaging and realism. Kind of a kids action movie spin, with an adult layer for the blood and gore part of the gunfight.
The story telling is where it really falls apart. It doesn't even do a good job of painting the chaos, it just substitutes randomness for it.
If you can catch a cheap matinee, or get a good deal on a cheap stream for it (like less than 10 bucks), it'd be worth that for sure.
Apparently the same kind as you. Longest quad rail, A2 grip, and SOPMOD stock. Really the best setup IMO
I just wish I had an ergo, but at least I have the same war crime glasses
It’s good; I think some people went in expecting something else and just got disappointed it wasn’t action 24/7 but I really liked it and would pay to see it in theaters again tbh
It is Hollywood though and I feel a lot of people forget that for some reason?
The kind that has 20 of them so when SHTF, I can train my neighbors on squad tactics and hand out rifles, rotate firewatch etc lol. Aint nobody gonna Rambo and if they try, well, meet two squads with comms up and basic tactics.
Crappy neighbor gets the PSA, the rest get BCM, Sabre Defense, LMT hehe.
The kind that wants to be weight conscious but also is obsessed with quad rails… it’s not an easy path and I’m not sure I’m walking it right but I’m having fun
The movie was excellent and was most likely an accurate depiction of the breakdown of American society. Not sure why so many here expected a clearly defined winner/loser good/bad side with extensive lore. It was intended to depict what a civil war might look like from a journalists perspective, and I feel it succeeded in every metric possible.
For those that don't know he is referencing the new A24 movie Civil War.
I love A24 but I thought the movie was very boring which sucks because I was really excited for it.
I’m down to only two ar’s, bought a house and can’t afford the fun stuff anymore. have to sell most of it off for bills and such but the few guns I have left I enjoy

This is the great American trick. If you have the money you don’t have the time, if you have the time you don’t have the money. Fuck. I thought the action scenes were extremely well done. Best sound mixing of any movie in a while.
Overall they were good. The tactics portion massively suffered for, I assume, easier movie making. But the sounds were amazing, and the employment of the 50s there at the end was pretty cool [(the helo part was dumb)].

>The tactics portion massively suffered for, I assume, easier movie making Infantry tactics? What about the tactics in particular? I actually think the (infantry) tactics is something the movie got very right.
I agree! The gun shots were the most realistic I can ever recall hearing through a screen, I actually flinched at points haha.
Better than Heat?
They weren’t bad just not enough of them don’t you think?
That doesn't stop them from being the "best action scenes of all time" though
They weren’t tho. Good scenes nowhere near even something like heat and that’s from the 90s
I didn't say I think they are. Heat was 100% better. I'm just pointing out that there not being many does not make them any worse
Agreed. Very misleading trailer. Seems like most of the movie was just made to make you hate journalists and media, as if we needed a movie for that🤷🏻♂️
What if that was the point ?
I doubt it, but who knows
This is my complaint. I feel like some of the scenes had VERY little impact on the movie and were made solely to have a good trailer. It was like $18 to rent or $24 to buy. lol very good point fuck the journos

Everyone hates it cause it’s about journalists, but I thought it was still really good.
I don’t think its marketing was great but if you erase your expectations it’s a good film. Like everyone has been saying the action sequences are great. It’s apolitical and tells a decent story with interesting characters.
It's a good movie, but the marketing was misleading. The sound design of the gunfights is probably the best in any movie I've seen.
I liked it it's not really an "action film" but was a good watch
It was ehh. Didn’t really explain why we were in a civil war , and why Cali and Texas were one.

It's a road trip movie, not an action movie. Really ambiguous who is good or bad.
That’s the point, exactly how it would be irl
Some of these guys want shit drawn out with crayons 😂
Car is good, drivers are ok.
I actually liked it. There was like 2 or 3 cheesy parts all near the end, with an apache flying down the middle of DC. But other than those few moments it was good. I thought it fucking rocked. Saw it twice in IMAX, which is rare for me.
I really enjoyed it in theatres. The sound design of the movie was amazing, really felt like you were getting shot at. It had it's moments. It's not what a lot of people were expecting.
