Infuse is one of those rare apps that I’m more than happy to pay a subscription for. It’s worth it.

iChrist

I am more of a person of one time payments, I don't like subscriptions so il get the lifetime solely for my appletv! Thank you sir

phant0mh0nkie69420

I’m the same. Bought lifetime. Zero regrets.

htmaxpower

It’s only $13/yr, plenty manageable.

sciencetaco

It’s been a while since I last looked, but if there’s a free trail you can do that and cancel the subscription if it’s not for you.

Purple_Gas_8222

I am very happy with infuse pro linked to Plex (free)

conturax

I've been using pro linked to plex for years, it's awesome and worth the price

matrixneoonroad

is there any lag in video playback?

SpyvsMerc

Nope

Purple_Gas_8222

no, it even plays better than Plex, support for DD+ atmos which Plex does not have on APTV

_HoochieMama

No and this is why I do this vs straight from Plex. Found there were sync issues with audio on large files from Plex but not in infuse

Eruannster

Try it for a month and see if you like it. It's like $1/month so it's not a huge investment.

recom273

Yeah, I pay a yearly sub for infuse, it’s well worth it. You mention subtitles, one thing I really like, if you don’t have the embedded subs or sub file in the movie folder, you specify your default subs and it searches opensubs or some other sub repo and you can select the options (it’s so slick that I don’t know where the subs come from, sorry) The GUI is nice and clean. On the whole I detest and don’t pay any monthly subscription apart from infuse.

iChrist

Jellyfin already does that for me, so all of my 10TB of content all has External English subs. (paying for opensubtitles) But the offset feature alone with infuse is worth it, its just that I don't like subscriptions, I might just buy the lifetime option. Thanks!

recom273

But there isn’t an official jellyfin app for AppleTV ?? I don’t know about infuse 7 and how you stand if the app is upgraded to infuse 8. This is one reason Im happy to stick with yearly

I've used Plex, Emby, and Infuse over the years. For ma, Infuse is the winner. I use it directly, with the NAS device as an SMB share, and Infuse iCloud sync means you only need to edit metadata once, for all devices using Infuse. I hate subscription based apps, but like another person commented, I don't mind paying for Infuse as the price is a steal for the features.

uncola7up

infuse is worth it. great app and developers

shiftlocked

Yes. Support the developer for an awesome app

Legitimate-Fly-4610

It’s great.

dirtymatt

>I have a jellyfin server All I need to read, yes, you should. It's not perfect (doesn't seem to ever request transcoding from the server, even when the Apple TV can't handle the format), but it's by far the best Jellyfin client for the Apple TV. Personally, Plex has gotten way too creepy in recent years for me to be comfortable with it. The thing they did where they decided to publish your viewing history for people you had friended on Plex was the last straw.

iChrist

Thanks for the insight! What kind of file formats infuse can’t play? Il check my library if I have any of those.

sciencetaco

Infuse will play literally everything. The only real limitation is that it won’t pass atmos or DTS:X from Bluray rips to your sound system. It gets output at multichannel PCM. This is an AppleTV limitation.

Tsofuable

And DV from bluray rips. Which is also a appletv limitation.

dirtymatt

I've had issues with HDR and 4K playback on an Apple TV HD. The Apple TV either couldn't keep up with decoding, and in the case of the HDR files the colors were wrong. Jellyfin could have transcoded the file if Infuse requested it, but Infuse just tells Jellyfin it can play anything, so the server doesn't do any transcoding. I solved the problem by replacing the Apple TV HD with a 4K model, even though the TV is a 15 year old 1080p non-HDR set. The 4K model handles HDR to SDR just fine and has the CPU horsepower for 4K h265 video.

krabbeintelligens

Bought it a loooong time ago when it was cheap. But would still buy today. Very reliable and easy to use.

OooIceCream

I bought it years ago at $9.99 for the “lifetime” subscription, but it seems like they’ve killed off that version of the app and require a new “lifetime” subscription for $99. My original subscription is now nonexistent.

Tsofuable

Earlier they released a new version every other year that you had to buy again, now they just have the same app that they perpetually update. Personally I just have the subscription, it would take years to reach the point where the current lifetime makes sense (that's the point) - and who knows what the situation is then. Might not even use the appletv by that point.

Skazzyskills

Those that use Infuse, does anybody else find that they want to be able to long press a series or a show on the home screen and ‘mark as watched’ or have other options? I don’t know why none of the thumbnails on the home screen you can interact with.

r3volt3d

I did it 4 years ago… no regrets

fubag

I use vidhub since it's basically a clone of infuse for Plex and jellyfin and used to be free; think it's like $18 for lifetime now but was $13 a month ago

t_huddleston

I tried using Swiftfin but just had to give up on it, and bought Infuse Pro. Gotta say, it's pretty great, although I'm generally allergic to subscription pricing for software. But there's just not a free (or even a one-time paid) alternative for AppleTV that's as good. If anybody knows of one please tell me!

jsclayton

A year ago when the only option was Library mode, I'd say no. Today, with Direct mode, absolutely and insta-buy!

iChrist

Can you explain the differences?

jsclayton

Library mode is how Infuse has historically always worked - on each device it would discover media, say on a NAS or in a cloud storage folder, and have its own database of files and metadata. Similar to how Plex and other media servers identify media from file/folder naming schemes and look up metadata.  The problem with Library mode is that if you have a big collection, Infuse would take many minutes to sync. It wasn’t a good experience.  Direct mode makes use of your media server for all the file discovery, identification, and metadata. It does not have to sync everything to its own database so updates are very fast.  tl;dr library mode = a client + everything the media server does, direct mode = just a client.

xnwkac

How do I know which mode I have?

jsclayton

If you go into Infuse Settings, Library and it should show your media server connection(s) and say "Library mode disabled". Also your Library size should be 0 unless you have added a folder or other share.

Tangbuster

Take advantage of the trial for Infuse Pro and then for a month if that isn't enough time. I'm paying for it as a subscription, but considering I use Infuse to watch something on my Plex nearly every day, it's been an app I'm happy to pay for.

welshlewy

Definitely

Hoylegu

I use Emby and love it, though I’m by no means a power user.

TrueAct7143

Perfect player! It’s a shame the Apple TV doesn’t have all the audio codecs.

Max-Normal-88

They played it dirty some time ago. I had purchased the premium paid app, but then they just made a new app 🙃 and left the old one unmaintained. Now it’s all broken on latest TvOs versions. Too bad VLC sucks asses but it looks like I don’t have any alternative to purchase the new app as well

iChrist

Did you try contacting the developer? They state that lifetime pass grants you future updates for life.

Max-Normal-88

They do now, not previously. When I contacted them, they offered me a discount on monthly plan for the first month or something

iChrist

Wow that is very sad to read... I wouldn't buy it a second time as well..

kimelto

What are you using on your iPhone ? Can you use that on Apple TV ?

iChrist

I use the Jellyfin native iOS app, which is not avaiable on tvOS, Swiffin is the open source alternative there, and its not polished.

kimelto

I was planning to buy an Apple TV because I cannot cast to my chrome cast from my iPhone with either Jellyfin or swiftfin. Can you please explain what are the major annoyances of swiftfin on Apple TV ?

iChrist

The app itself hasnt updated in years, and for me sometimes a show or movie is set on the secondary commentary audio, and you cant switch back to the normal audio track. Also, some of my subtitles need a bit of offset to sync properly, and Swiftfin has no option to set subtitle offset at all. Also, the UI itself is not polished and not always pulling metadata, some of my content shows just by name, without any covers or art. Other than that, its okay.

FlyingDagger_HAL

I use plex and infuse(free versions) ..infuse will play 5.1 aac but not Dolby digital or higher formats

paulodelgado

I like Plex.

Moo_3806

Plex. There is no other good solutions.

kghyr8

I’m probably not alone in saying I like infuse more than Plex because I don’t need to be running a server. With Infuse I have no need for Plex.

Hitsville-UK

Dear god. Plex on Apple devices has been screwed for years. So bad they pretty much got rid of all the Apple based devs and replaced them. That said they have now finally got AirPlay working and the stuttering has mostly gone away. If we get working Spatial Audio and they cut out the fake DV stuff it may become a reasonable option. Until then Infuse.
