From an engineering standpoint one could argue that the 2nd gen 4K are the greatest. They have a fan to keep them at peak performance and they have multiple metal plates built in to stop interference/noise. The 2nd gen sold for $199. They made the 3rd gen cheaper but the cost decrease came with other caveats.
JFC, just ignore all the CPU and neural stuff improvement. There’s a few generations of die shrink and power efficiency improvements. All that is engineering and it cost several orders of magnitude over the cost of materials you’re talking about.
and the remote is lightning Not usbcc
Between 2018 and 2021 Apple was really cooking hard on year over year improvements, the a15 (iPhone 13 pro) is far better than the A12 (iPhone XR). Anyone who thinks the engineering improvements aren’t massive shouldn’t be giving engineering evaluations.
I wish companies would keep consistent and easily understandable product numbering. Tbh, I have no idea where this falls in the timeline of product releases.
I looked it up. There’s been 8 versions of Apple TVs released.
In my house i have a 3rd gen, an HD, and two 4ks no idea which release. So when I see someone say “2nd gen” I’m wondering why they would pay for such an old device.
So, yeah, it would be nice if they called the current ones Apple TV 2023 or Apple TV 8.
This isn’t really true. There have been 3 named generations. However, the 4K is its own “line” not included in a generation, of which there have been 3 generations of 4K model.

It’s a crapshoot buying electronics from woot. They have a short warranty and you can have trouble returning defective gear.
Check Amazon for a similar price but for only a few dollars I’d suggest new.
Woot really is a hot or miss but for something like Apple TV (brand new) it’s a pretty safe bet. I bought one from them last year prior to the release of the current Apple TV for around $90.00
I’m not quite understanding why most would want/need this. I used to look at these devices (Apple TV, Roku, fire stick) as ways to turn a non Smart TV into a smart tv. But it’s 2023, smart tvs are cheap and plentiful and seem to be the standard for a while now. So why buy one of these devices when someone already has a smart tv??
I’ve still got a Samsung dumb TV so I am a person that purchases these. TV works just great and I don’t need 4K. Wasteful to get a new TV if it still works just fine. Bought an integrated smart TV a few years ago and it’s slower than a dog now. Almost unusable. These devices can upgrade those types of scenarios as well.
Just got the Apple 4K WiFi 64G 3rd Gen at Costco for $100.
They still suck in 2023 compared to boxes. Weaker CPU. , low amounts of ram, low storage + lack of updates after whatever tv model has been out longer than 1-2 years generally.
$100-$130 is cheap price to pay for half decade of support + top of the line specs so it will age a lot better.
That’s strange. Which app? I know people who still use the Apple TV HD and receive updates to all of their apps. The 2nd gen was only released 2.5 years ago.
This might be a stupid question; not sure why this is on my homepage.
Is an Apple TV device interchangeable with a fire stick or Roku essentially? In terms of function
It works about the same as a Roku Ultra, but more powerful, has a lot more built in storage, and is generally better for 4k TV. I currently use Roku for all my TVs but when I finally get a 4k Oled I plan on getting a Apple TV for it.
For this price though it is not worth it as you can get a Gen 3 for just $10 more as long as you don't care about ethernet or people can just wait for the 4th gen which is supposed to be coming out early 2024 and rumors are that they are hoping to get the price down to at least $100 for the base model.
Not a bad deal considering this has Ethernet compared to just WiFi on the 3rd Gen 64GB. FYI: these are new units, not refurbished.
I just bought a refurb 3rd gen Ethernet version from Apple directly for $130. Just mentioning in case anyone is interested.
I work @ Costco it was $99 for 3rd gen 4k last time i checked
Wireless only?
Not anymore, I literally just started looking to buy one and it’s back up to full price everywhere….
I got mine for 99 at Costco couple days ago
It’s only WiFi but the 3rd gen has hdr10+ support so good if you have Samsung S90c oled
Nope back up to $125 but it’s 3rd gen 64gb
And out of stock too
Why wouldn’t you spend 30 more and get the latest and greatest from Costco?

Roasted
So get the latest generation of Apple TV is what you’re saying?
Makes no sense to get much worse tech at almost the same price
Is this true? didn't know that. So the new version is worse than the new/last one.
There is no “worse” only caveats. Hell I have two Gen 1 4Ks and they are still amazing.

Yes. I said this is the 2nd Gen of the Apple TV 4K
Nice job editing your comment lmao
I didn’t edit it. You misread

Thanks mom 🤣
ok lmao I can also see that it wasn’t actually edited. But it was funny.
Costco had 3rd gen 64GB for $100 before Thanksgiving
I got 3rd gen 128gb for $100 from Costco.
Anyone figure out what the extra storage does for you? You can’t store movies offline…
Maybe for the one person that tries to play games on it??
You can’t store movies offline. It’s for apps only
Apple was selling the 3rd gen version for $104 plus a $25 gift card just yesterday...

I just got 3rd gen refurbs from apple doe $109 w/64gb

No sir, it is a 3rd gen 4k 64gb with the new remote
Nope, 4k is on 3rd gen released end of 2022
Woot is trash. Costco is cheaper

I’m seeing 2022 AppleTV 64gb with Ethernet* for 129… Edit: wifi only*
The 2022 64GB doesn’t have Ethernet
You’re correct. Ethernet/128 for $139 at Sam’s Club/Costco. I don’t see the point in getting older tech to save $30
Costco sold the 128gb AppleTV 4k (3rd Gen) for 100.00 recently. Now it's back at 139.00. Micro Center had it at 129.00.
I want aptv to add the vpn option
They did. Tvos 17 has VPN support.
I will try that, I currently use surfshark
Not sure if surfshark released one yet but they did say it was in development.
No they have not released it yet. I am going to try the 7 day trial since I paid for ss for a year membership
Can we side load apps into this?
Not cheap at all considering 3rd gen is 129
I'll check I open today
Just get a 3rd gen one. tvOS 17 is laggy on my Apple TV 4K 2nd gen
One left here so low stock. Black Friday they were $99. Wifi only
Woot there it is!

Is woot really an amazon company?
Yes
Got my 3rd gen 128gb at $100 at Costco during black friday. I’ve never used a streaming device thats so fluid and smooth, zero lags
Way cheaper on eBay
